News Headlines & Features

Sign that man!
31 Oct - After witnessing yet another excellent goalkeeping performance at the weekend from American Tim Howard, Everton fans have been clamouring to have the big bad-mouthed boy signed up permanently, be it now or in January. Yet the fact is that the player is at Everton on loan for the season, with a permanent move depending very much on the whims and wishes of Manchester United. David Moyes says he hasn't even gone there yet...

Everton frustrate Arsenal at the Emirates
28 Oct - Everton ground out a valuable draw in their first visit to the Emirates Stadium but it took the intervention of Mike "friend of the big clubs" Riley to give the Gunners their break after Tim Cahill had fired home from Mikel Arteta's corner to put the Blues ahead after 10 minutes. Everton sat back for much of the remainder of the game as Arsenal came forward in waves but couldn't break the visitors down despite Rosicky, Henry, Flamini and Fabregas all going close. But with 21 mins left Riley awarded a free-kick-that-wasn't on the edge of the box and Robin Van Persie curled home.

Superb Blues demolish Luton
24 Oct - Inspired by a masterclass by Mikel Arteta, Everton tore Mike Newell's Luton apart and surged into the fourth round with a handsome 4-0 victory that could well have been double that. Apart from missing a 44th-minute penalty, the Spaniard was phenomenal, as was the Blues' overall performance. They were 2-0 up at half time through goals by Tim Cahill and an own goal by Keith Keane, and they doubled their lead in the second half with a terrific third by James McFadden before substitute Victor Anichebe rounded it off with a superb individual effort.

Earl to be on the Everton Board?
22 Oct - The Official Everton website features comments from new shareholder, Robert Earl, which refer to his "induction onto the Board". Other comments, including those made in Bill Kenwright's video interview on EvertonTV, suggest that Earl (who is a Tottenham fan) will not be just a sleeping investor, but will be called upon to impart some of his vast experience gained in the restuarant, gaming and entertainment industry.

Elstone confirms stadium move?
22 Oct - Everton's Chief Operating Officer Robert Elstone, interviewed in Malaysia's New Strait Times, indicates clearly the intention of the Club to move into a newly constructed stadium in the next few seasons. Mr. Elstone says, "We are constructing a new stadium and it will be ready in two or three years time. Goodison Park, located in the centre of a residential area in Liverpool, has a small sitting capacity of around 40,000." Interesting though to read Mr. Elstone supposedly cite David Weir as a product of our famed academy. Misquoted, Sir?!

Back to Winning Ways
21 Oct - Everton ended a four-match run without a win by seeing off Sheffield United who played the last hour with only 10 men after Claude Davis was sent off for the foul on Andy Johnson that gifted the Blues their second goal, a penalty confidently converted by James Beattie. The home side were already a goal to the good by that point thanks to a rare Arteta goal that finished a nicely-worked move, but United, to their credit, looked much better with reduced numbers and gave Everton a run for their money in a second half in which either side could have added to the scoreline. Reports byLyndon Lloyd and Paul Traill

'Planet Hollywood' mogul buys out Gregg
20 Oct - Bill Kenwright's long battle with Paul Gregg is over after he and wife Anita Gregg resigned from the Board of Directors and sold their stake, which formed the second-largest block of shares in the club. The buyer is an organisation called BCR Sports apparently headed by Robert Earl who founded the Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood chain of restaurants. Earl, an English-born "casino and leisure entrepreneur" now based in Florida, is worth an estimated £200m.

Lescott is looking good
19 Oct - In this article, Paul Foster runs the rule over Everton centre-back Joleon Lescott, who has made an excellent start to his Everton career. Lescott has impressed since taking over from Alan Stubbs in the excellent win at Spurs, and hasn't looked back.

You're nicked!
18 Oct - The ever efficient FA have charged Everton following an incident in last week's reserve derby victory over Liverpool. A melee followed an incident involving Liverpool's keeper, Dudek, and our own Victor Anichebe which resulted in Dudek being red carded for raising his hands. Everton club secretary, David Harrison said, "We have been charged with a breach of FA rule E20, which is failure to control our players."

Tiny Tim up for the Golden Ball
17 Oct - Being named among the fifty best players in the world is quite an honour, and Tim Cahill can claim that with the announcement of a 50-strong "shortlist" for the Golden Ball award ? la Balon d'Or, as selected by French sports journalists. No, this is not the Fifa World Player of the Year award... but hey, let's not get picky!

Patience required, Blues!
16 Oct - Joanne Lewis, writing on the icLiverpool website, argues that Evertonians need not dwell on the negatives from a poor result on Saturday at Middlesbrough, incidentally our first League defeat since April 17 when the Blues succumbed to the might of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, 0-3. She also questions whether some Evertonians have unrealistic expectations - and though valid her case may well be, we'll always see a split between those who rigidly adhere to the belief of Nil Satis Nisi Optimum and those who see gradual progress!

''We are better than last year''
15 Oct - David Moyes believes the Everton team that lost at Middlesbrough on Saturday is better than the one that won there last season, as he looks to reinforce some positives from the great start to the season by his charges. However, it looks increasingly like stalling: a first defeat, no wins in four games, and just three points returned... Carry on like that for a season and we would have just 30 points!

Boro too physical for weak Everton
14 Oct - Everton stumbled to their first defeat of the season as Yakubu ended a personal run of six straight defeats against the Blues by scoring a first-half penalty that set Boro on their way to victory. Tim Howard denied the Nigerian a second penalty goal with a fine save after Joleon Lescott had handled in the box but Mark Viduka eventually did double the lead after a fine Boro move. A brilliant solo goal by Tim Cahill gave Everton hope with 13 minutes left but, despite a couple of legitimate penalty claims of their own, the grandstand finish never came. Match report

Middlesbrough vs Everton
13 Oct - With another international break out the way, Premiership football is back on the menu and unbeaten Everton travel to The Riverside to take on one of the division's more erratic sides in the form of Middlesbrough. [Betting] [TV]

Johnson lifts monthly award
13 Oct - "Reina drops" that fell on his head, the man in the right place at the right time, the man in form throughout the month of September - all contributing factors as our own Andy Johnson is named the FA Premier League player of the month. Johnson, though delighted with the personal acclaim, was quick to acknowledge the role played by his teammates, saying "it's always nice to win things but I see this as a reward for the whole team. We've made a terrific start to the season and although the award will have my name on it, I wouldn't have scored six goals so far if the rest of the lads weren't playing so well."

Internationals take their toll
12 Oct - The hamstring strain Phil Neville sustained in the England warm-up has effectively sidelined him for Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough. Other potential knock-on effects from the week's international matches are set to significantly disrupt David Moyes's selection process, with Cahill still to return from Australia and four other players (Weir, McFadden, Davies, Carsley, & Valente) all heavily involved in games this week.

Frustrated Davies eyeing winter exit?
10 Oct - Welsh midfielder Simon Davies has aired his frustration, playing only a minor roll in Everton's unbeaten start to the season. After a good pre-season Davies has failed to secure a starting place in Moyes' eleven and concedes, "the manager decided to go a different route and you can't really argue with that because we are undefeated and the lads have done great. But if the situation hasn't changed by January I may have to consider my position." Asked about his relationship with the manager, Davies said "that's between me and him, but he knows players are not going to be happy if they are out of the first team. I'm working hard every day in training and I'm confident I will get back in the side."

Carsley checks in with Irish squad
10 Oct - Midfielder Lee Carsley has finally been called up by Irish international manager, Steve Staunton, to face the Czech Republic in a Euro 2008 qualifier which could seal the ex-Liverpool man's fate as national team manager should the home side lose for the fifth game in a row. Staunton, plucked from the obscurity of overseeing the fortunes of Walsall's reserve side to maintaining Ireland's standing in the international game, has been hit by a number of withdrawals yet continually chose to overlook Carsley who has been keen to return to international duty for some time now.

High praise for Scots duo
9 Oct - David Moyes was full of praise for two of his players who have hardly figured for Everton this season, but both put in great performances for Scotland in beating France on Saturday. "Davie Weir was absolutely superb," said Moyes, while "Faddy is a young player who is developing and getting better. He is a great talent and he is improving things like his decision making."

Yobo outstanding in Nigeria win
8 Oct - Joseph Yobo captained Nigeria to an important victory against the home side in Lesotho today. The harf-fought victory in Maseru keeps Nigeria well positioned at the top of Group Three of the African Nations Cup qualifiers with a 100% record.

Weir and McFadden in Scots win
7 Oct - Jamie McFadden led the Scottish line against France, wearing the dark blue No 9 shirt in their massive Euro 2008 Group B qualifier. With ex-Everton manager Walter Smith providing further Everton interest in this clash. Scotland rode their luck a bit in the first after Henry hit the post and France had two goals ruled offside, but went ahead on 66 mins off a corner. McFadden was substituted on 72 mins but David Weir was on 'til then end, and scenes of great celebration at Hampden Park.

''We wuz robbed''
5 Oct - Manager David Moyes has admitted he feels sickened ? despite his team's great start to the new season! Having conceded a controversial offside goal away at Newcastle and last minute goals in our last two home fixtures, Moyes has time to reflect on what might have been ? "It is a while since I have felt as bad as that after a football match. It felt like a defeat and still does." He added, "I feel that we should be higher in the league than we are at the minute, no question about that."

Sportsman's Dinner at Goodison
4 Oct - The Sportsman's Dinner in aid of Z?e's Place Baby Hospice will take place on October 19th in the Marquee Suite at Goodison Park. Holden - "Best game in years at this level"
3 Oct - The line-up for Everton Reserves included both James Vaughan and James McFadden, both of them well on the road to recovery from injury and looking to stake their claims for a place in David Moyes's first-team squad. David Weir, Andy van der Meyde and Victor Anichebe also played, while in goal for the Blades was none other than Paul Gerrard, who helped keep the score low, but could not prevent Mark Hughes scoring off a great AvdM free-kick.

Kenwright's concern over corruption
2 Oct - Chairman Bill Kenwright has expressed his concern in advance of tomorrow's Lord Steven's report into football corruption claiming "I have come across difficult agents, but I have never ever come across an unscrupulous agent." He's obviously forgotten our friend from ProActive! He adds, "I have come across very good agents, so I think it is a tidal wave and I could not give you a sensible answer to a lot of the questions about money in football." Surely one would expect the chairman of a football club to be in a position to provide 'sensible answers' to questions asking where they money is going?

One step beyond
1 Oct - In this Feature piece, Jim Hourigan provides his personal evaluation of where Everton find themselves now ? riding high in the Premiership, as we all know, on the strength of an unbeaten run the like of which we have not seen in 20 long years... So we should all be happily rejoicing, right? Celebrating the replacement of "Wandering Walter" with the deft management skills of David Moyes, who has turned things around since those dark days and bought much-needed stability to the club. Read on...

Sign that man!
Oct - After witnessing yet another excellent goalkeeping performance at the weekend from American Tim Howard, Everton fans have been clamouring to have the big bad-mouthed boy signed up permanently, be it now or in January.
