Hope is a terrible thing

Looking forward to the two derbies? Well I am for one and I sense a mood amongst fellow Blues that something special could be about to happen in the next two games.

This is quite a contrast to the way I felt walking up to the last Goodison Derby. I expected us to be crap that day and by God we were... although by the end even I was shocked by what must rank as one of the most shameful displays in the club's history ? not for the scoreline but for the fact that we didn't even compete.

So why are we all so excited about the upcoming derbies? There is of course no rational basis for this feeling ? even now, I am getting that sick feeling i used to get whan I was a teenager before these games. Yes, we are on a good run but we have not really beaten anyone special; we have been on good runs before and I have still feared the worst before a derby.

I really hope that the players and Moyes live up to these hopes as, if we suffer two comprehensive defeats, then the landing will be very hard indeed and the season will just drift away.

So far, Moyes has avoided his usual tactics before these games ? you know the sort of thing: mention how much money they have (as if we were unaware) and that we will try to give them a game (which is transparent code for 'we will keep the score down'). I pray to God he does not weaken in the couple of days before the first game as in sport confidence and belief are everything.

Moyes sometimes clearly resents Everton fans for not appreciating what he has done and, to be fair, he has a valid point but he is also missing the bigger picture. We want glory. The next two games give him the chance to move from being just respected to being loved.

There are no guarantees in football but if we play anything like we did against them in the first derby then I for one will not forgive Moyes. It's all in place to send out 11 disciplined utterly determined players who totally believe we will win.

As for the lucky bastards who have tickets ? don't sit down for a second and don't stop singing for a second.

Hope really is a terrible thing...

The time has come... you can almost smell the devil's palace and among all the calls for "Give it a go", "Don't show fear" etc etc... my hunch is most Blues will be awaiting the naming of the line-up and then conjecturing on how it suggests we will approach this game.

It would appear we just have to swop one player for Fellaini and keep faith with those that started against Hull. A look at the squad list we have available and no straight swop is remotely obvious, so I believe it will be a case of tactics to ensure against defeat. The obvious may be Big Vic up front with Cahill in hot pursuit. Could it be Gosling being given the Fellaini role and working box to box?

Or I just wonder could we see something like 4-2-3-1 with Castillo joining Neville as a two-man holding midfield pairing allowing Arteta to pull the strings and Osman and Pienaar being asked to put the shift of a lifetime in supporting Cahill and getting back to make it 4-2-4-1?

I pose these questions as no doubt our manager will be fully aware we are away to not only our bitter enemy but a team who can go back top of the pile with a win. I expect no gung-ho stuff but a solid away performance where a draw would be viewed as acceptable and a nicked win utopian for all concerned.

In my view, I hope for a good solid professional show where we give them nothing and always are in a position to just nick that vital goal. In such an atmosphere, with the chance always being there of someone sent off or indeed conceding the first goal, after another glance at the squad available, it's hard to see a 'Plan B' scenario.

So ? let's hope we keep eleven on the pitch, don't concede... and nick something ? then the walk from the ground will be something akin to heaven.

Yours in hope... UP THE BLUES

I don't fancy Anichebe for this game... it would be like playing with 10 men. We need somebody who isn't gonna stop running, and who gives 100%. I suggest throwing Yobo into the ?mix?. I would put him in front of the defence, maybe man-mark Gerrard? He can get back when extra defensive duties are required, since we are lacking height in Fellaini?s absence. And also support Cahill when or if we decided to play some direct football, which at times has been successful the last few games with Cahill and Fellaini. Alternatively, play 5-4-1, with Yobo, Lescott and Jags, with Neville and Baines playing as wing backs?? Just an idea!!

"Looking forward to the two derbies? Well I am for one and I sense a mood amongst fellow Blues that something special could be about to happen in the next two games."

It's a strange feeling and it's shared by every Blue I know. I honestly feel we can do them at least once! They are fuck all to fear, with the exception of the ladyboy up front and the other prick in the middle, that team is distinctly average.

It has taken United, Chelsea and Arsenal all having "off" seasons for them to even have a sniff up there, and they are slowly but surely blowing that now. Moyes has to look at these 2 games as games to prove to supporters (like me) he can cut it on the big occasion. If he sends a team out there with no intention of trying to beat them fuckers, it will be unforgiveable.

I never fancy Osman in any big game but derby games he is a waste of space. Osman has never had a semi-decent derby game and we can't afford a passenger in these next two matches. We have no choice though but to play him and find a replacement for Mo and that's what worries me badly.

It's the middle of the park where these games are won and lost and I just hope we stand up to them in that department. Short on numbers and still no activity in the window doesn't look good but I ain't giving up just yet. Maybe just once or twice luck will be on our side and we can do the unthinkable.

Whatever happens, I will be there for both of them and I am a lucky charm at Anfield. Seen us win 5 times since the Graeme Sharp volley which was the first time Everton won at Anfield in my life time. Been at every Everton victory there ever since and haven't been since the Kevin Campbell derby in 1999...

Take it from me, Boys ? we will win a least one of these games. We can't lose both because Marshy the lucky charm is going... See you there boys! COYBS.

Tony you won?t be able to blame Moyes if we lose both games now, as we?ll all know it was your lucky charm that failed us!

Seriously though, can?t see how playing Yobo in midfield would help us as Jimmy suggests. His distribution is terrible and games such as these we really need to be keeping hold of the ball, or else we?ll just invite pressure.

I think the same will happen if we play Cahill up front on his own. Big Felli has done a great job of supporting Cahill recently, but we don?t have anyone who could do that job as effectively, therefore Anichebe seems the best option. Yes he?s looked a bit lazy lately for me, but it?s a derby, he?s a local lad, he?ll run himself into the ground for us.

A point Tony makes about Osman is a valid one. Whilst I like him and think he?s valuable squad member, he is ineffective against the ?big boys?. Plus he?s had a pretty poor few months by his standards. A winger in the transfer window is much needed.

As usual my nerves have gone! Yes, we are on a good run... but then I think with the exception of Chelsea, who only had ten men for most of the game, who have we played? We are without Mo and the options on the bench are sparse to say the least.

I personally would drop Osman and play Castillo and Gosling to add a bit of strength and height into our midfield. I would not even consider changing our defence which I believe is as good as anything in the Premier League.

But I am so annoyed with Kenwright. He has known for some time where we needed to strengthen and ? once again ? not a single signing in sight. I hope for two draws at best.

I dissagree with Jimmy when he says above that playing with Anichebe is like playing with 10 men. For various reasons, the lad has yet to have anything like a decent run of games.

I agree with Tony?s view that Osman?s big game input, particularly against the RS leaves much to be desired. Arteta's failure in those games also dissapoints. I hope beyond hope they give a good account of themselves and prove me wrong. Should that happen, I would be more than happy to eat my humble pie.

I have never felt so excited about a derby game. I really hope that the lads who often go missing in these big games, turn up and turn it on. Ossie and Arteta need to control the midfield. I hope we don't start with Anichebe... he seems to be out of form. In spite of all this, I have a strong feeling we will win at least one of the games.....

ps: All those of you at the game... don't forget you?re cheering for those of us who can't make it too. Shout your head off, Tony... cheers

A really good post, John. I too have a feeling of growing optimism as the negative stories gather pace across the park. No great leader goes into battle talking of how good the opposition is. This is Moyes's time, he needs to be Braveheart, Churchill & Joe Royle all rolled into one ? building a feeling of invincibility amongst the players & supporters. The momentum could be unstoppable; don?t let us down, Davey, this is our time... let's go there and show them what EFC is all about.

Anichebe will play, be of no doubt; virtually every one is demanding we go and have a real go at this crew, how are we supposed to do that without a recognised striker? We have to go with a 5-man midfield that means Cahill must drop back.

Yobo in midfield was tried against this lot at Anfield before, it backfired big time; please, no square pegs in round holes tomorrow. As for Gosling? i like this lad but he?s played less than 2 hours of top flight football in his entire career! Let's put him on the bench and see if he can make an impact if called upon. These two guys are going to be crucial to us in the coming weeks.

I?m getting so depressed at the negative comments aimed in Vic's direction, I saw this kid come on at WHL and run Woodgate and Ledley King ragged. I know there is a player in there somewhere and Moyes needs to somehow get the best out of him. Leave moaning about their own players/selection to the shite, let's get behind ours.

Whatever happens in the two big games, the furore is taking away from the complete absence of movement so far in the transfer market... I reckon we are heading for another late-season meltdown because the squad we have is too small to mount a consistent challenge throughout a full season. Every team in the league is again moving to strengthen and we are once again placidly sitting doing nothing and hoping we can get through the season with what we have.

What we have is an abundance of crocks and deadwood taking salaries and providing zilch. We desperately need some squad members to supplement the side we have ? otherwise, I am certain we will falter once again due to fatigue, injuries and suspensions. The two big games are a smokescreen to the real priorities we have at EFC.

We are gonna get something out of at least one of the two games. Reason is Benitez?s rotation policy and putting square pegs in round holes. Liverpool's best team includes playing Torres, Keane, Gerrard, Alonso and JM. Benitez is going to mess up one of the two teams upsetting their spine.

Also, look out for him playing Hyppia, Skrtel at CB and Carragher at RB. I remember watching team news in the AJ derby and knowing immediately we were going to win it as AJ was always going to run Hyppia to ground. We do not have someone like that now but I am sure all of our midfield running at their defence is going to create goals and probably a penalty. Now, that is hope...

I am praying that I have the worst hangover for years on Tuesday morning. If we score first, then we will get something out of the game because we have been playing as a solid unit lately.

A goal just before half-time followed by a quick second after the break will have a small group of scousers in Stirling going bananas.

I can?t bear to think of any alternative. If they score first and we still come away with either a draw or win that will show just how much team spirit and teamwork we have and still improving on.

Anichebe should never play, even if we have no other strikers fit ? the bloke's just not very good and fills me with dread.

We should just play Castillo instead of Fellaini and leave it at that ? why change a winning team that doesn't leak goals?

I suspect thats what will happen, though whether it's Castillo that plays instead of Fellaini is open to debate.

James Marshall, So play Castillo behind Cahill? I?m not sure that will work.

We should be looking to keep our shape, not mess about with it. Anichebe may not be the best player in the world but him coming in and Cahill dropping a little deeper is the best way to go in terms of balance.

Too many times under Moyes?s leadership have we walked into derbies only to roll over and die. The last 2 especially have been gut-wrenching to watch. It's his job to get the lads up for it, and his job to organise tactics for the game. The worst thing about it is Liverpool haven't even had to move out of 2nd gear against us on the last few occasions. I honestly feel he will prove me wrong at least once over the next 7 days.

EFC are on a good run at the moment so why not just minimise the changes? At the very least I hope DM doesn?t mess about with the defence. Yobo should be on the bench. Arteta centre mid. Keep Anichebe on the bench for a time-wasting substitution when we?re 2-0 up in the 4th minute of injury time.

We will definately not lose both games, I am confident of that. Historically when two teams play each other three times in a season, one very rarely if ever wins all three games.

It happened last season when we beat West Ham twice in the same week and then only drew the game at home despite taking the lead.

On Monday night, I am going for a draw with Cahill grabbing a late equaliser but if we get a repeat of the last time we played the same team twice in a week away then bring it on!
