Value for the Money

Pretty amazing that we will take the field tomorrow with a team that cost around $25 million when the shite paid more than that for Torres.

Goes to show you what a shrewd operator Moyes in in the transfer market and why he is worth his contract in todays environment.

Can't think of any other manager aside from Wenger who can boast such a record.

Hard to argue with that, Ajay - although I suspect that you won?t have to wait long before the anti-Moyes moaners start playing their Krøldrup, AvdM or Beattie cards. I wish someone would do a money spent/finanicial wherewithal cf league position analysis over the past, say, 5 years. My bet is that Moyes would win hands down, Wenger notwithstanding.

I was just thinking to myself today what bargains DM has picked up, particularly the likes of Cahill, Jags and Lescott who were only really proven Championship standard players.

I recall most posters on TW being far from impressed by the arrival of Jags in particular (I can’t say I was overly excited by us signing a player of his questionable calibre either). Look at the lad now... Fast becoming, in my opinion, one of the best centre halves in the Premier League.

Shame we appear to have nothing in the kitty this January... Even with say 4 million to spend DM may well have been able to pull another rabbit out of the hat (quality player from the Championship).

Tchité (pron: chee-tay). Similar background to Fellaini. Not on the bench for Racing Santander today. Could happen.

Beats at £6m was a wrongun from the stat. ADVM and Krøldrup are different matters. I do though think Felliani will become good value, though I?m sure the CL exploits against the shite pumped up his value by £7 million.

Those that think every single player will come off are living in a very delusioned world. David Moyes must easily be one of shrewdest operators in the market. And I include Wenger in this list because, don?t forget, all these players are on a lot higher wages than ours, so while Arsenal don?t normally pay massive transfer fees, they can pay good wages to any perspective star.

Well, it's a shame our two big money signings won't be available.

I am excited to know how Moyes will approach this massive game, it has to be either Castillio in the holding role, which I think would disrupt our system too much, or a straight swap of Victor for the Big Fella.

I think Moyes will be cautious and play Castillio to keep it tight so he can throw Victor on if we are in a loosing position. Only time will tell as to which is the right decision. At least he has two goes at it so he can try both an see which works best. In Moyes I Trust.

Anybody can assemble a sub £25 mill team to go to Anfield (or even GP) and lose to the RS.

He will begin to show why he is worth his contract in today's environment when he goes there and not only WINS, but plays for a win.

Where does the under £25 million come from? Fellaini was £15m, Jags was £4m, Lescott £4m, Arteta £2.5m, Pienaar £2.5m, Cahill £2.5m, Yakubu £12m...... I know these figures are approx but this is off the top of my head. I?m not sure where the £25m comes from unless talking about net spend...... either way it?s fair to say that DM has spent a lot less than the Spanish Waiter.

Mike, in fairness to the original post, the team heading to Anfield won’t be including Fellaini or Yakubu, which explains why Ajay’s figure is much lower.

Never mind that. If Moyes is that shrewd he will not even consider fucking about with the defence tonight, they have been immense. I like Yobo but I do not want to see him anywhere other than the bench tonight. And if he does play and we lose, I?ll know who I?ll be looking at to blame. On the plus side, we won't lose ? we will give them a battering!!!

Take Torres, Gerrard, Keane, and Kuyt out of Liverpool's side same as we have missing and see if they would play for a draw? Incidentally, those players [Gerrard apart] cost £60m, our players [take out Fellaini for Gerrard] cost Yaks transfer think about £12m.

Realistically if you where Moyes with no strikers and Felalini out playing away to 2nd in the league would you play for the win? We are sitting nicely in 6th and a draw is far better for us than them, so sit back, defend and counter-attack ? attack plays into there hands.

Ian Tunny, you don?t seem to have included Gosling for Fellaini, which IMO would be the best change. I can?t help but think we will concede posession too cheaply with Anichebe up front, when going forward, and whilst I don?t mind Castillo, I think with him and Pip in the middle, we are being to negative before we start. For me, Gosling can easily slot into the current system and keep the team fluid going forward.

At least when we loose we can say we lost with a pittance..

Or is that not the point of this thread?

An interesting comparison but the argument only holds up because Torres is now available after injury but Yakubu is injured and Fellaini is suspended! Does that mean that Gerrard who cost Liverpool nothing makes them better value because Arteta cost more? What matters (apart from the referee?s impartiality) is the mental strength of the players on the day. It?s still 11 vs 11 !!

Why haven't we been linked to Lyon striker Fred, a proven Brazilian international (5 goals in 9 games) at the right age (25) available on the cheap with just 6 months to run on his contract? This boy is class and was playing week-in, week-out at a top European club before the emergence of Benzema. Last year he was supposed to be a £10 million target for Spurs, now he's even considering Stoke for Christ's sake!

From skysports website:

"I do not know whether I will leave Lyon in January or not yet," Fred told French newspaper Le Parisien.

"I've heard the club would like to see me leave, but it is my decision. And if a club signs me to join at the end of my contract, and to stop Lyon from making money on me, then that is my problem.

"I can confirm I am considering a proposal from Stoke City. They are not Arsenal or Manchester United but they are still a good Premier League club.

"And at least they have shown me more respect with their offer than (Lyon president Jean-Michel) Aulas has made me at Lyon."
