Timmy Cahill

Comments (19)

I'm fortunate enough to be a supporter of both of Timmy Cahill's teams... Everton and Australia (independently, as my great, great uncle played a game or two for Everton, and it's been in the family ever since). And I have to say, the guy is an absolute legend.

The number of times my team has seemed gone for all money, and the little man has popped up and snuck in a goal...it is seriously freakish. Apart from today, my two favourites are:

1. The World Cup, 2006: Australia is playing its first world cup for 30 odd years. Its first game is against Japan. Japan score early, and despite dominating play, we trail one-nil deep into the second half. Timmy is brought on around the 70th minute, as he's got an injury cloud hanging over him, and little match fitness.

By the 80th minute, the Australian supporters at the ground (my brother and I were there) were flat as a tack. It seemed we were destined to lose. But then who steps up in the 83rd minute, but Timmy Cahill to smash the ball home between about 3 sets of legs!! Unbelievable!! A draw!!

Or so we thought... a couple of minutes later, Timmy gets the ball on the edge of the area, takes a touch, and proceeds to curl the ball into the goal, off BOTH posts!! In my mind, Timmy is responsible for around 40,000 travelling Australians having the best month of their lives. :-) An Australian sporting legend!!

2. Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, 2007-08. One-nil down at the Bridge after 89 minutes... it didn't look good: yet another defeat against the Sky Four. And then Timmy slams home one of the most acrobatic bicycle kicks I've ever seen. Check it out! http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=IHffsMNAekk

Besides the amazing goals he's scored, I have to say I admire the man a great deal. From all reports, he's one of the most grounded, approachable guys around, and I personally think he is a huge factor in the team spirit that seems to regularly permeate the Everton team.

I could go on, but you get the point ? he's a legend!

The channel I was watching on (not sure if this was on setanta too) had a camera on him the whole time that free kick was being taken...his movement, awareness and timing was special...

There’s definitely a case for keeping him up front...

This guy is our NEW DUNCAN FERGUSON......I really hope he doesnt get injured.....and maybe just maybe....we have found a position where his goal output is actually nearly every game.......

I remember so many goals he has scored for us......I love Tim Cahill and he has to be our next captain.....

This guy will go down in our history as one of the most passionate and proud to be blue ever

If anyone hasn’t seen Tim’s goal, you can watch the video match report on The Guardian’s website - that might be just for today, I’m not sure.

He’s a gem isn’t he! And Mikel’s delivery of the free kick is worth a look too - hard and low, giving the defence a lot to do.

£1.5m from Milwall compared to whatever United paid for Nani and Anderson, says it all!

He is a big game player and has made a career out of scoring very important goals for all his clubs and country. His timing is impeccable in the air and is a leading candiate for our best player of the decade.

Speaking of trophies, the next time we win one I would bet that Tim Cahill gets the winner

Keith Galvin reminds me that a couple of years back I worked for a while with a Millwall supporter. This came to light when I mentioned Everton. Her face lit up and, although she hated to lose him, she was so pleased that he had found a good home and was doing so well. Not surprisingly, they loved him too and still do.

He is a special player for us and so important. We miss him when he is so badly injured that he can’t play. Unlike many footballers (eg Victor) he plays with pain and when not 100% as he showed earlier this season.

The man isnt the most skilful footballer but he has the biggest heart.

At his best he is such a damn pest. Is there anyone better at winding up the opposition than Tim? He does have an advantage in being an Australian in that regard (worlds best sledgers in my view).

To me the 1st name on my teamsheet every time - I just love him.

Only in a footy way of course.

He will be an Everton legend

Ciaran

I noticed that too, I also thought I had noticed him give a signal to Mikel Arteta to place the ball exactly where he did. Cahil started his run the moment the Arteta started to take the free kick.
I read in the pre-match interview they both gave with the Times that they practiced free kicks and Corners until they where sick of them. This one really looked like a training ground set peice

He always puts in for both club and country. He is that good that you can almost rely on him to get a goal in our biggest matches. Like you Tim I will never forget watching him come on to score Australia’s 1st ever goal in a world cup. He is already ranked as one of Australia’s greatest ever players and I’m sure he will live on in he memories of Evertonians well after he hangs up his boots.

On a day of history, it was nice to see a quiet reserved chap in Barack Obama's father's Kenyan village giving a celebratory jig for Cahill in his EFC shirt on the BBC news. Who says only the Sky 4 get full coverage?

David, I was thinking yesterday that Tim Cahill has probably caused a material number of young Aussies to support Everton. It then occurred to me that we have quite a wide variety of internationals in our team - ie. they’re not all from spain, etc.

Our first team contains a single player from each of South Africa, America, Australia, Belgium and Spain, a couple of Nigerians, plus a good number of Englishmen.

Adding in fringe players we have Denmark, Portugal, France and Ecuador. Quite a variety!

So hopefully we can develop a bit of a following in each of these countries.
