The missing link!?

Comments (67)

The game last night was the perfect example of the 'Everton' attitude: spirit, heart ? call it what you want but not once did we give in against a team who could in all honesty, with the right tactics, have played us off the park. We were as close a nit team as I have EVER seen (none of the 80s, but the '95 FA Cup final).

The players were all playing for each other, and not themselves. They were prepared to put themselves on the line for the cause. Regardless of style of play, this is what makes Everton who we are. Long balls or keeping it on the deck, the effort is never compromised.

The formation 4-6-0 whether it be through luck or genius, it compliments our 'never say die' attitude. When in possession, any two of our six midfielders bust a gut to get up front and make things happen. When we don't, we have six midfielders behind the ball closing up the shop. This is only possible with the level of fitness we have at Everton. Defending from the front.

As much as I like him, and I think he still has a job to do at Everton, I think Anichebe is the weak link. Through both ability and commitment but both of these may come with time and experience.

This brings me on to the question, who could bridge that gap?

It would have to be someone with a big heart, someone who plays for the cause and not himself, someone who defends from the front and someone with the ability to turn things around if we are not on form. It hate to say it but I believe one Wayne Rooney would complete our team and have us challenging on ALL fronts.

I am not from Liverpool myself but it is still so obvious to me that this lad is a scouser, and a blue one at that! His natural game is to play deep when he doesn't have the ball, defending from the front, trying to win the ball back for the team, and should the team pick it up, his first thought is GOAL. Whether it be a shot, picking out a pass, or even off the ball running, it doesn't matter to him. To have the team to score in any way possible. This is the Everton way in my eyes.

Would he come? Why not? He left not for love of money, but to win trophies, and we all would if we were honest with ourselves wouldn't we? The thing is, he has now won the league and the Champions League (everything except the FA cup). I guarantee he looked at last night's result absolutely gutted not to be involved, though still beaming inside!

He is still young and he puts on a brave face in front of us but I think it's an act. He would be made up if we opened up to him as I think deep down there is love, and that love is a two way street. Once a blue always a blue? Absolutely.

We now have the resources (not talking about money) to match his ambition and just like Shearer returned to Newcastle (after winning the Prem), I believe Rooney would love to come home to Goodison Park, to have us singing his name again, to be involved in the biggest game in world football (a derby) would mean the world to him.

Start some rumours, get the press talking about it. We need to sew the seeds in the minds of both manager and player. Get them both thinking about it for a while. The good ol days. ? I have no idea who would call who what with David and Wayne being who they are (both as stubborn as each other). I do however believe that the manager would after some weeks/months of thinking about it, being the mature one of the two, bite the bullet and make contact.

Possible (obvious) stumbling blocks: Alex Ferguson's desire to keep the lad, and plain old hard cash!

Yet there is hope: The Yak cost ~£12M, Fellaini cost ~£15M. So, finding £20M is not beyond inconceivable this coming summer. Selling the Yak for £15m and you are close to having a leg to stand on, and if the player wants to go...

*Sigh* I just had the craziest dream!

Watching the game last night, and leaving aside my reservations about how frequently we gave the ball away, I was very disappointed with Anichebe’s contribution. Maybe I’m biased, but I thought he only seemed to start running hard just before we conceded. His run in on goal, immediately prior to Stevie Me’s opener, was the first time he really seemed to run at the Liverpool defence with conviction and power. He was slow closing down, slow picking up, slow making runs, slow getting back on his feet etc. I’m not trying to be hard on the lad, just my observation.

In contrast, I was full of admiration for how hard Kuyt worked for Liverpool. Now, the guy is never going to be prolific, he’s never going to be the greatest footballer in the world and he’s never going to be a fan’s favourite. But my god he’ll work hard, in any position, for every single match. In many respects, he’s the perfect David Moyes player. Is he what we need? Long term, I doubt it, unless we’re going to play 4-4-2. Short-term, I think he’d be a tremendous acquistion to our current bunch of players.

Of course, what we’d all like to see is someone who has Kuyt’s workrate, Rooney’s desire, Kaka’s skill and Owen’s finishing ability. Sadly, I think we’ll just have to keep dreaming on that one.

And before anyone starts mouthing off about me wanting to sign Kuyt - I don’t! I was just struck with how bloody hard he worked last night, and I admire that in a player.

Brett, answer me this, WHY,WHY,FFS,WHY? We do not need the fat(ugly) little kid. Football is a team game, and we are starting to look like a real team. Last night one red supporter(with his mate nodding in agreement) said we are looking like changing our name to GERRARDPOOL,I said as in LIDDLEPOOL of the fifties? they did not know what i was on about, i explained, and his mate said to him "shurrup you mouth" I smiled and walked away, no snide remarks from them, Thank you the Everton TEAM, job well done.

I can not see that happening, ever.

However, why look to raise £20m which would not be enough, why not turn to a young lad we have... Gosling. In the times hes played, hes defended from the front, I remember at middelsborough he tracked the ball from 1 wing to the other, pressuring every defender and eventually making a brilliant tackle and winning a throw in for us. Also he busted a gut to get forward with attacks, and got in scoring positions several times in his short appearances, He could of had a hatrik against boro, he scored the following week.

He looks like he would be a very commited player, who looks comfortable on the ball, he will work for the team. I think gosling could actually be the missing link. I would have been very happy to see goslings name on the team sheet ahead of victor. And i would love it if gosling started in the FA cup. He looks mature enough to be able to deal with being thrown in at the deep end, and after he got a standing ovation from histeam mates for his performance at boro i think they would all work hard for him in that game and he would fit in very well.

So start ur whispers and rumours and maybe gosling will play on sunday?

With today’s transfer prices I dread to think how much Rooney would cost, but I’m betting it’s close to double the £20m mentioned here. I think he’s burned his bridges as far as Everton is concerned, but stranger things have happened,

As for Anichebe, The lad was knackered, plain and simple, I’m amazed he found the energy for theat "penalty" run, and with a subs bench with more "trusted" players on it he’d have been given a rest. We’re at the bare bones and if players start to tire, as they did last year, we could find ourselves drifting out of the top 6.

Of course if they don’t there’s a genuine chance of joining / replacing Villa in the top 4. Preferably 3rd as 4th place has a nightmare qualification next season.

Fair points being made. If he wanted to join us, though, I don’t see the price or salary being an issue. It only takes one Alex Ferguson retirement and a short contract to push the price down.

The badge kissing tells a story but I could see that being an act, in reply to the banter we give him.

OK Kuyt has workrate, kaka skill and owen finishing, but doesn’t Rooney have them all? Having them all was key to the point, and being able to drop into a 6 man midfield where play would dictate who pushes up front and who tracks back, all interchanging. It’s unpredictable, similar to how Cahill works from midfield.

I would love for Dan Gosling to come through and fit in with the team ethic, James Vaughan is in the same mould but is too injury prone. Shame.

I agree that Owen may well be able to come in and do a job as the one ’lazy’ player in the team. The Yak does it very well. To me though, the system would be flawed because it’s just a 4-5-1.

People are talking about the missing link without reference to whether these players would realistically want to leave their present clubs and more importantly, join the mighty blues.

Two players of real quality we should be looking at our Javier Saviola and Fred.

Saviola has played for both Barcelona & Real Madrid, has been described by Maradona as his player and is on the list compiled by FIFA and Pele of the 100 greatest living players. He nearly left Madrid for the barcodes last year but has now been told he’s not needed by Madrid. He’s always stated his desire to play in England and he’s the kind of player who would fit right into our current side. Apparently he’s entertaining a move to Pompey, which indicates wages aren’t that much of an issue. Surely we must be a more attractive prospect than that sinking ship?

Fred is a Brazil international currently playing for Lyon. He’s had his chances limited by the system using Benzema as a lone striker. He’s had a row with their Director and has been told he’s played his last game. Crucially, he’s been linked with Stoke. Stoke!?!?! If he’s considering going there, he should definately be wooed by playing for a club of the stature of Everton.

These are players we should realistically focus our efforts on attaining. Both have contracts expiring in the summer, meaning we could get them on those lovely buy now, pay later deals that Blue Bill so adores. Forget pipe dreams about Rooney or wastes of money like Owen. Get on these 2 boys!

A change of luck for James Vaughan could be the best answer for the team. It is a funny old game, but can’t see it. Big Vic showed signs last night he can be a big asset, he needs to stop going down too easily though. I reckon if Vic could get a meaner, hungrier, nastier more arrogant attitude when he crosses the line we’d be in business.

The Rooney project is over?!?!?!?! Did he save the club by his sale?

Everyone’s so hard on Vic, he played a lone striker role that has little end reward. Without many recent games under is belt the guy was a pest for the RS. Forced a good save from Reina and set-up Cahill.
He does go down too easy but that comes with youth. Running up a down the field for 90 minutes is almost impossible. Moyes likely told the team to play for the set-piece. Hence the the goal we scored.w

Kuyt was M.I.A. for parts of that game.

The perfect player for us would be scarface (Tevez) . That guy works hard and his skill would be welcomed to the team.

Rooney left Everton in 2004 for fame and fortune at Man U; young German international Podolski left Cologne in 2006 for fame and fortune at Bayern Munich.
Podolski has just agreed to return to Cologne, but the difference is that in his heart he never left Cologne, and the Cologne supporters never stopped wishing he?d return, never considering him a traitor for going to Bayern.

In Cologne, a fan website with 10,000 members was created solely to try and persuade Podolski back, the Cologne mayor actively supported the cause, and even the local philharmonic orchestra and choir came out with a CD with a song about how good it would be if he returned. None of this mutual feeling exists between Everton fans and Rooney, as many posts here exhibit.

Gosling should at least get a run out on Sunday. He definitely gets into scoring positions and whilst he?s missed a few he?s also scored. He?s all action, gets stuck in and seems to have an inexhaustible reserve of energy. Also I wouldn?t mind seeing AvDM get something of a run out even if only as a substitute.
