The Mail Bag

Unfit and under prepared

Comments (14)

I'm just wondering what the general opinion is concerning Moyes's latest comment. "We were certainly not ready at the beginning of the season. Some of our players were not back to fitness and we were not in the right condition."

Surely if this is this case then the poor form at the beginning of the season rests squarely at the feet of the manager/coaching staff. To me this seems unprofessional and negligent. Yes, Moyes has worked wonders over the last few months but this assessment of our early season is so frustrating. It seems that he is admitting that quite a few points were lost due to the players not being ready or prepared. If they had been, it's quite realistic to say we could have been 3rd in the league by now.

I think Moyes is more referring to the likes of Arteta, Pineaar, Vaughan, Saha, Fellaini, Castillo, Hibbert, Baines, Cahill and possibly others all being unfit or unprepared due to only just coming back from, or still being, injured or, in the case of the new signings, not speaking English (admittedly it was partially his fault they were signed late).

We only had 10 fit senior players at the start of the season so you could say yes that the majority of the squad was unfit and underprepared. But them being injured was hardly Moyes fault. Yobo being underprepared because his brother got kidnapped was also not Moyes fault.

Moyes was obsessing on the settlement of his contract details. His attitude and demeanour was repellant. That brushed off on the team. Only when BB gave in to his every whim did he get back to focus on the job that pays him so well.

Treveor, that is one almighty assumption to make. You may be correct of course, but you can only base this on mere hearsay and speculation. Lets just suppose that Moyes was made promises as to how much he could spend, then he had the rug pulled from underneath his feet for one reason or another. How would you react? He is the one who has to explain poor results to the fans, so maybe just maybe he was digging his heels in to make a point.

I also maybe wide of the mark but I think it is only fair to balance your opinion out.

In this weeks Zoo magazine (or it might be Nuts - I can’t remember) there is an interview with Lescott. They asked himif the contract situation with Moyes had an effect on the players. He said no and that the blame was squarely at the players feet for the bad start to the season. He also said how much of a top guy Moyse is.

Can’t accept your point David. The injury situation in our small squad was dire pre season and whatever went on I think it’s safe to say that Moyes knew who he wanted to buy and then the money wasn’t available until the last minute Whether he overreached himself by sticking out for quality like Moutinho to take us on from last year’s great effort and should have gone for more journeyman squad players is up for debate I guess. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, the hard thing in any sort of management is making the decisions at the time. Me I wanted to see one Mouthino type player rather than a few of Hunt from Reading types.

David Moyes is a consumate professional and to blame him is ridiculous - we had lots of players out of action at the start of the season and I’ll lay money that if you asked any of our squad they’d all back Moyes 100%.

You only have to look at the way we play to see that they love playing for him. If you can’t see that then I wonder what you DO see.

Shaun, I believe your assesment is spot - on, Im sure that was why DM looked and sounded so fed up in the early weeks of the season - allied to the players already mentioned being unfit after major injuries it must have seemed like groundhog day - especially frustrating when we were well placed to build on last season - Im just glad he’s back doing what he does best - getting the maximum out of a good set of players.

There are 2 things we cannot dispute.

BK is a proven liar.

DM is not.

The close season was an absolute joke for EFC.

Carsley, Fernandes, McFadden etc all left, from an already threadbare squad, without any sign of being replaced.

Another Chief Exec resigns under Kenwright.

We can then only buy 1 player at the last minute after selling Johnson to fund it.

How any sane person can blame Moyes or criticise him for not signing his contract under those conditions is beyong me.

Billy liar is still true to form as well. Moyes has always done a good job of papering over the huge cracks caused by Kenwright and our recent run of form has saved Kenwright’s arse again.

Does anyone know why we have not signed a striker yet? We’ve known since the beginning of December that one was needed yet it looks like it won’t happen. Our squad is tiny and if it stays that way our season is likely to just fizzle out again.

DM said that Johnson wanted to move so he had to sell him. As he doesn’t lie then that must have been the case.

If BK is so bad and DM so good, why does DM feel the need to cover for him ? Why doesn’t DM " smoke him out a la Walter with Hamper Man ?

So, he’s not as principled as he’s made out to be.
