Derby Goals and Scorers

Comments (29)

This post is just a Just a bit of fun sandwiched between the two derbies this week. I was thinking of some really great derby goals (blue ones of course) in my lifetime and the greatest I remember was Graeme Sharp's stunning volley at Anfield. I can't remeber the year... 84? I was 12.

SInce then I can't remember any really outstanding strikes. So I pose that question to readers; would you agree with me that the aforementioned goal is the best in recent derby history? If not, what other contenders are there? Stuart Mcalls at wembley was pretty decent if I remember.

Also... a little trivial question. Without checking on Wikipedia!! Of the top ten Everton goalscorers in Derby matches, how many can you name?? Of Course Big nose Rushie tops the chart for the RS.. ...enjoy on Sunday!

Weren't there two sweet strikes from my hero of the moment Andrei? Forget the cloud under which he departed later on... he was brilliant for us and those two goals at Anfield were exceedingly well loved.

Michael,

What is going on with the site - half of the time its down? Is this problem only on my side or are there other posters with the same issues?

Stefan, it’s not just you....I have the same problems. I wouldn’t say it’s half the time and usually it’s just a volume (# of users) issue or a simple refresh will suffice but certainly there are issues accessing this site.

Re: derby goals.....I have to say that the two goals that AJ got in the 3-0 win were pretty decent. His first followed poor SHITE defending but he took it extremely well (probably one of the few times he did) and his second was brilliant just because of the combination of the brilliant shot from Carsley(?) and then the complete botch job by the SHITE goalie. It’s comical aspect made it all the better!

Big Dunc scored one of the finest headers I’ve seen when a ball was whipped in from deep.

Got to be AJ’s in recent history, the second one where Pepe the Clown juggled it before throwing it onto AJ’s head a comedy classic.
But going back a little further I would have to say Andy King’s screamer into the Park End goal.

With you Graham - Andy King, Goodison 1978. I was 17 and in the Gwladys and I think it is the most exhilirating goal I have ever witnessed.

The 25-yard free-kick that Arteta scores from this Sunday!

The Big Yin at Anfield 1998 - long throw, lay off from Mick Madar and Duncan curls it in right footed into the bottom corner.

Or the same man again 1997, curled into the bottom corner with the left.

Top 10 scorers in Derbies? At a guess I would go for Ferguson, Sharp, Cottee, Dean. I started supporting Everton in 86 so I don’t have much perspective.

Agree, Andy King in ’78.
I was nine and will never forget it.

Nothing but nothing even comes close to Sharpy?s volley. I was in the Kop that day and being vertically challenged didn?t see much of the proceedings. However, as if by some divine intervention, thank you Lord, just as Sharpy lifted the ball over Lawro?s head, a parting appeared among the massed Blue ranks, and for 2 or 3 seconds I had a clear unspoilt view. Then, as if in slow motion, with the athletic leap of a Salmon returning to its spawning ground, Sharpy rose, and with a swing of his mighty right boot the ball arced like an speeding arrow shot from a Long-mans Bow over Bungee Bruce and down the back of the Anfield Road net.

Cue delirium amongst the Blues on the Kop, and when I eventually came down to planet Earth I just cried at the sheer beauty of the strike, the likes of which have never been seen before or since from either team. I still get Goose bumps now just recalling that goal, it will stay with me till my time as a Blue is over, and beyond into which ever realm we visit next...

Oh it's good to be an Evertonian.

I recall Olivier Dacourt scoring a screamer in the 1st minute at Anfield in about 1998, we went on to lose the game though, that little prick Gerrard cleared one off the line in the last minute, that must have been the first of many times he went on to piss us off.

Kevin, that was beautifully described! It was a bit before my time but I used to watch it on video as a kid over and over!

My Dad has only been to Anfield once and it was that day. He said he will never go again because that moment will never be beaten and he wouldn?t want to ruin his memories on that ground.

All 4 equalisers in the 4-4 draw in the 5th round of the cup (particularily the 4th seeing them sink to their knees). I also remember Peter Beardsley scored a lovely low one into the park end to beat them and join but a handful who have scored for both sides in a derby.

Agree with Michael too, Andrei?s brace was superbly taken. He is the only player to score in a Merseyside, Manchester and Glasweigan derby.

However, the best of the best was Sharpy at Anfield. And we love our Graeme Sharp..

Sharpie?s goal was fantastic, but Andy King is the winner. It was my wife?s birthday (one of those with an 0 at the end) and we were going away for the weekend ? what a start to the festivities!

Andy King for me. I was in the St End and can still see it flying in. Agree with McCall's wembley strike. Sent me beserk that one.
Has everyone forgotten Carsley's goal?
It feels like winning a battle when it's a single goal victory. But so much sweeter when crushing them 3-0.
Roll on Sunday.

Mark Ward also rifled in a beauty in 1993 in a 2-0 win. His goal was topped off with a hilarious row between Grobelaar and McMananamanaman.

Is it true Mark Ward went to jail, or something along those lines?

Cottee at Goodison in about '94 when he embarrassed Dicks, ran through Grobelaar, then slid it home. Also Beardsley and Mo Johnston when we came from behind to win 2-1 in December 92. It was only the second home win of the season and my first ever derby game. Barnes hit the post with an absolute sitter in the last minute. Magic.

Ball's winner in the cuptie yonks ago with BOTH grounds full. Anfield with a big screen and Goodison jam packed and thousands outside yelling for us to tell em the score... .the stunned faces on Smith, Yeats and Lawrenson as Bally wheeled away in triumph. Oh and Roy Vernon must be high on the list as he always played well in Derbies... Dean and Vernon must be high on the all time scorers for EFC in derbies.

Stefan Tosev, the site is often down when I try to access it too. I’ve had 2 or 3 different error messages and I often have to try several times before I can see Toffeeweb.

Server problems, perhaps?

@Trevor Lynes

I remember that game well. It was 1967 and we won 1-0 in a 5th round tie, losing to Notts Forest in the next round. I remember that arsehole and professional scouser Jimmy Tarbuck had been to Anfield to watch on the big screen. As he came out totally pissed off a Bluenose said to him "Don?t get upset Jimmy.... it was only a film"

The Forest game was on the day that Foinarvon won the National and I remember that Sandie Shaw won the Eurovision with that shite Puppet On A String. I think Ian Storey Moore scored a hat trick for them and Jimmy Husband a brace for us. The things you can recall from a game of footie...

I was on the Kop also for Sharpie's volley. I was only 14 and was with a friend and his dad. The thing I remember most was the arl feller bursting into tears when the ball hit the net, I found this a bit strange at the time, but in a funny way it all became clear to me when Carsley scored for us at Goodison the other season!

One that hasn?t been mentioned was Campbell?s winner at Anfield in ?99. Great combination between Judas and Jug Ears to set him up.

Cadamarteri?s was the best of the Premier League era though. Remember the day afterwards me convincing my mates that he was going to be better than Owen. Doh!

Changing the subject slightly ? I know it?s not nice to dwell on these things, but what about some of our Derby nightmare moments? I?m thinking about that miss from Madar when he should have put us 2-0 up (think it was the game when Ince equalised late on). Or Paul Gerrard getting beaten by McAllister from 40 yards. Or the pen that Rhino conceded in 01-02 when he just bulldozed straight into Heskey? Sorry to mention them, but they are etched on my mind as much as the goals we scored!

Does anyone remember the fantastic goal Martin Dobson scored at Anfield late seventies which got very little showing because the cameras missed most of it and the shite won 3-1?? (For the record, he picked up the ball in his own half, raced about 15 yards and let fly ? I think Clemence was in goal and never smelt it.)

Any goal against the RS is a good goal. Any goal we score against the RS is a GREAT goal. My personal favourite is AJ?s second against Pepe the Clown.
