Uefa Cup 2009-10

Comments (22)

Would I be right in thinking that a Manchester United victory (assuming that they finish top 4) in the Carling Cup final in March would mean that the Uefa Cup place would go to the 6th placed team in the Premier League (as opposed to the Carling Cup runners-up)?

Knowing that European qualification provides clubs with a greater level of appeal to its existing and prospective players, staff and fans, it could prove massively important. Especially with the level of competition for places in the Top 6 this year ? and the current reality of us sitting fairly pretty in sixth position.

I know that some will cite that there is still more than a third of the season left ? and the FA Cup route still more than open ? so aiming for sixth is not a strong option. And I agree. But the safety net of knowing that sixth place might mean a Uefa Cup berth then that is surely a bonus. No?

Correct.... the Uefa Cup spot goes to the league if the winner has already qualified for Europe.

Right on, Andrew. I have been cheering for Manure since the semis. I think we want them more to win the Cup than they do.

Ha ha.. I?m old school. Still call the Champions League the European Cup and the Europa league the Uefa Cup :-)

Yes, that's all we need ? another dozen or so worthless games next season with a squad as small as ours. I can't recall a stampede of players wanting to join us the last few times we made it in to the Uefa Cup ? can you?

By all means finish as high as we can due to the extra revenue created from the PL placings but the Uefa Cup... Nah, not worth the hassle.

Tony, Tony, Tony
you just can?t help it. - Mr Negative
Are you trying to convince all of us Evertonians that the Uefa Cup wasn?t a blast. Cup runs in whatever competition are really for the fans. Players & teams can gain confidence too.

I went to Florence and Nuremburg last season and had a blast mate - great nights in those cities with thousands of fellow blues. If you don?t know, that's what fun is.

Reliable as ever with your shite.

So, Tony, let me get this straight: what you?re advocating is that we shouldn?t try to get into the UEFA cup this season because we might not win it and it might stretch our playing and financial resources a little bit in other competitions. Well, following the line of your inordinately woeful logic, I?ll go you one further: let?s try our very best to get relegated this season, too, then we can play at a lower level next season and won?t have to exert our playing staff any further; we?ll be able to afford lower quality players and attract lesser names like Wayne Routledge and Robbie Savage to the club, all the while saving our precious pennies.

Come to think of it, why don?t we just disband the whole club, then neither of us have to bother about showing up every Saturday. God knows it?s a drain on my time and resources and it?s probably a hassle for the players to show up too. Forget about a step-by-step build up of success. Forget playing against some of Europe?s elite (Bayern Munich, AC Milan etc). Forget gaining valuable European experience so that by the time we?re able to qualify for the Champion?s League, we might actually get into the group stages and start earning some real money. You are, without a doubt, Tony Marsh, the most infuriating poster I have ever had the misfortune of being subjected to.

I hope we manage to continue our current form and finish in the top 6 again. Playing in Europe again would definitely be something to look forward to, especially if the calibre of teams (AC Milan, Bayern, etc) from this year is repeated.

However, it sure as hell didn?t help our "appeal" in attracting players when we qualified for the Uefa Cup last season, as evidenced by last summer?s shambolic transfer window.

As for this window, let?s hope Cahil stays fit. If we don?t sign another striker, even on loan, we might pay for it later down the line. It?s not like we havn?t made that mistake before.

What a stupid comment regarding Europe from Tony Marsh. No, it doesn't really attract big names but we can't afford them anyway. No, it doesn't generate much money, but really it's one of our only chances for silverware. The league?... err no chance; the Carling Cup and FA Cup with our record under Moyes? ? not a chance. The last trophy we won was 1995 its now 2009, I am getting a little hungry to see it again. Tony, you write some sense but Jesus, your write a lot of bollocks too.

I disagree that us qualifying for the Uefa/Europa Cup is what draws big players. It?s really all about the dosh, innit? Man Shitty qualified for the cup through the backdoor and are attracting the finest of players, because they have the dosh. I firmly believe that we need a sugardaddy very, very soon.

I totally disagree on Tony Marsh?s view on the relevance of the Uefa Cup and most of his posts, but he is spot on about how a thin squad like ours can only compete on so many fronts in a season. Can you lot imagine us right now competing the Carling Cup semis (like last year) and the Uefa Cup with this skeleton of a team we have right now?

We need the Uefa Cup, but we need more dosh (a sugardaddy), too.

The nightmare scenario ? the Redshite go into a tailspin, finish fifth, below Everton, but win the Champions League: guess who lose their place in the following years CL???? This holds of course if any of the SkyFour finish fifth & win the CL... With those jammie bastards across the park you could totally see this happening.

I just simply look forward to any Everton game. Europe (Europa??) games are refreshing and we get to see our lads pit themselves against various styles and tactics than the 140mph premier league. Hibs with even more time on the ball for example.

Who’s to say Platini won’t try to boost the revenue in the UEFA Cup (Europa???) in the future. Let’s look after ourselves first and climb the table as far as we can, regardless of Europe.. Europa.

Normally I agree with everything Tony Marsh writes but I can?t agree about the Uefa Cup. For me it?s not about revenue it?s about honours. Hand on heart I would rather win the Uefa Cup & earn a million pounds than qualify for the Champions League & earn 20 times that and get embarrassingly dumped out at the first stage.

The honours list shows trophies won not money earned. We?ve finished fourth in recent years & it wasn?t all it?s cracked up to be. Give me silverware anyday.

Bill Hoskins,

You took the words right out of my mouth. Can I just add... why finish high up in the Premier League table to claim a few million in prize money after playing 38 games when we can play 7 or whatever games or so earn £500k (which would average about £5.5 mill over 38 Uefa Cup games) and also get out of this country which we have all been stuck in for too long.....

Why did we dream 5 years ago of one day getting back into Europe?

Why don't you want to play West Brom instead of Fiorentina? Why dont you want to see players such as Ricardo Fuller instead of Kaka and Ronaldinho? Tony Marsh??

Hi all,
I would have hoped it was the aim of any club at any level to finish as high up their given league as possible, and take the reward for doing so, be it a pie and a pint in the local or Uefa Cup football. Nobody can buy the experience (not even City) of playing European football, another chance to learn the tricks of the trade needed to move up to the next level, and you can't buy the sense of pride it sends around the club and the fans.

As for the £400k, that pays a hell of a lot of apprentice?s wages, young guys a club like Everton need coming through every season. In my opinion, European football is priceless to Everton, and for anyone to suggest we turn our blue noses up at it is just off the wall. A simple way of judging the benefits of coming 6th in the Premier League is to compare it to what you get for coming 7th. For me there is no comparison.
