It was only one result

Despite the quality of the performance on Monday night, I found it hard to get any real satisfaction from it. We all went on afterwards about how we had no strikers, how our team cost as much as one Liverpool player, how it was a magnificent defensive display, how we have great team spirit. To me, this just makes us come across as better version of Bolton.

Reading the match reports in all the papers the next day just reinforced this. They were all highly patronising and the common theme was plucky little Everton, well done, you really put it up to the might of Liverpool. I guarantee you that every pundit on Sky Sports and Match of The Day over the weekend will sound the same.

Jesus, with the expectations we had at the end of last season, is it really what we have been reduced to that we are happy with not noticing or complaining about this? Have people really been so happy with the result that it has managed to hide what the result should have meant?

It's now Friday lunchtime, the game finished at 10pm Monday night yet all I have seen is chest thumping and talk about sticking it to Liverpool and their title ambitions.

In my mind, we had everything lined up at the end of last season to do this season what Villa are currently doing. Yes, the big four have been unusually inconsistent this year. Yes, Villa have had some luck, but they have put themselves in the position to make the most of this chance when it's come their way. If we had done things properly over the summer, and at the start of the season, we could be doing the same.

We could now be looking at the result as being a point gained in terms of CL qualification. Instead, we've reverted back to the bad old days when a draw at Anfield restored a bit of pride and gave us a couple of days worth of bragging rights.

Whatever happens on Sunday, I get the feeling that Liverpool fans will go back to worrying about how they can pip their real rivals Utd to the Premier League title and how the can win the CL. Us, we'll still be eight points behind Villa with Utd and Arsenal to come...

We'll still have no strikers and the smallest squad in the division. We will still be worrying about making sure we fend off Wigan and Hull for sixth place and hoping that it may provide us a Uefa Cup spot this year.

Yes, Monday night's game did restore a bit of pride to a season that should have been better than it has been. But please folks, let's not go back to the bad old days of being that small-minded and parochial that a result against Liverpool blinds us to everything else.

Kieran I think most of us were so happy with a fighting 1-1 draw at Anfield because of what has transpired there in previous seasons under Moyes. That's gone now and Sunday is another game. I don't rate Liverpool as much as they rate themselves and they are beatable. The problem is do the team and the manager have the belief to carry it through?

If we had've lost last Monday night with exactly the same performances from our players, there would've been inquest galore. As it happens, we nicked a point and I think it's a mixture of relief and happiness that we didn't lose rather than euphoria over a draw.

Is all this talk of Liverpool being up for revenge on Sunday hold water? I don't think so.

Dropping that point on Monday will have a huge psychological effect on the Liverpool players, sowing the seeds of doubt in their heads in overcoming us on Sunday. Failing to beat us on Sunday will be a huge blow for them, bigger than dropping two points last Monday. All the pressure is on them to perform, after failing to perform last Monday.

For Everton, on the other hand, it's different. Getting a point out of the game on Monday was almost like winning, so the Everton players will have an added spring in their step. Everton would have also gained confidence out of the game on Monday, and will be starting to really believe they can actually win at Anfield on Sunday.

All the media don't think Everton can win this tie and progress to the 5th round, so there is no pressure on the Everton players to win this. They can just go out and enjoy playing football. Look out for a surprise result in Everton's favour.

Jesus, it didn?t take long, did it? What is it about the mentality of being a Blue? Who gives a fuck about what Liverpool go on to do the rest of the season? The only reason they are near the top this season is that the overall points gain has been so poor compared to last year (fact).

And as for ?fending off? Hull and Wigan, get a fucking grip. Hull are in complete free-fall and Wigan are selling all of their best players. I don't consider either a threat. How about we (cliche alert) take it a game at a time and enjoy it when we get decent results? By my reckoning we have already taken more points off the Sky 4 this season than we did last.

Kieran, whilst I agree with you in most respects, I don?t believe that you have taken into consideration the extremely poor start to the season.

Up until the Spurs result and those that have followed, I was honeslty fearing that this season would see us in the relegaition dog-fight. That we have managed to escape that scenario is testament to the players' attitude. I too would like us to push on and challenge the top 4, but our poor start will I?m afraid put an end to that pipedream. If we manage to overcome our neighbours in the Cup then that will be worth bragging about, especially if we end up lifting the Cup.

The attitude of the media is an easy option for them as they equate celebrity with success. Everton, even if we had a few more pence and were 6 points clear at the top, would be expected to ?blow it? as the Sky 4 have the winning mentality and resources to overcome all challengers to them.

I would give Liverpool 6 points every season if in exchange we always finished above them in the league.

I will go along as to say I was more than satisfied with a draw, albeit a late one at that. I don?t understand the need for negative views... yes, the season got off to a less than impressive start what with the pre-season nonsense involving the Moyes contract, non-signing of reinforcements, poor league start, early exits from both domestic and European tourneys, but Moyes has steadied the ship and now we face an intriguing FA Cup meeting with our rivals, a chance to enter the 5th round of the competition, and maybe even go on to win the whole thing. You never know.

Add to that a likely finish in a European berth ? again!, and it?s hardly all doom and gloom. We will have a clearer indication on Monday as to where our season is destined to finish, but for now, let's get behind the team, whether at Anfield, on here, or your own lounge and hope for an Everton victory. We owe them big time remember. The hurt of the two 1980s finals will never fully vanish, but we can claim some payback on Sunday. Watch this space.

Sure it was a good result for the Blues but they were 3 mins away from a defeat and that would have eliminated all the euphoria. It was another hard-working performance but we have it all to do again on Sunday and we need to get a goal ahead instead of chasing the game again as we so often do. They got so bent out of shape after the penalty appeal they forgot Gerrard was still around and paid the penalty.

There is still a lack of firepower from the midfielders which concerns me every game except the odd free-kick that Arteta takes. However, in comparison to Liverpool, this Everton side deserves all the praise it gets considering the millions spent on Torres, Kuyt, Keane and a few others when our available offence is just a home grown lad and an Aussie who cost very little. Another solid showing on Sunday is all we can expect whatever the result.

Hey Kieran, Perhaps I should not bother to don my colours for a dash through the bush dodging Roos after midnight to the nearest TV showing the game. Is it worth all that bother just to watch us get thrashed while in the company of cock a hoop RS fans? I would be better advised to stay in abed and merely dream about a glorious victory?

70 years ago at birth that decision was taken out of my hands. Fate decreed that I be an Evertonian and with that comes an optimistic belief that my team with a bit of luck can thrash the living daylights out of any team in the world.

Amongst all the Toffeeweb doom and gloom no matter what results our boys have achieved in the past - I?m with you, Dick Fearon, in believing and that this time our "Blue Revolution" will systematically wear down the RS and kill them off by at least 2 goals. If I?m right, will Tony Marsh write the match report!

I will add my name to the positivity and think we will triumph 1-0 with Leighton Baines scoring his first ever goal.

Kieran, you can only beat the team they put in front of you, as the old saying goes... or at least try to do that.

And that is exactly what we are doing at the moment, with some style considering the lack of depth and how badly we were playing just three months ago.

So lighten up, enjoy the ride and get ready to celebrate a 3-1 demoralisation of the RS on Sunday :)

Kieran, I?m absoulutely gutted with the way we failed to kick on in the summer, and what that?s meant to our season. I?m gutted that I didn?t see my team win a game at home until November.

But it?s done now, and whilst it still rankles, I don?t see the point in doing anything but getting on with it and getting behind the lads. A late equaliser is always something to celebrate and it was against a bigger team so I can take being patronized.

I?d rather win the FA Cup than qualify for the Champions League and whilst we can still do that, and we?re still playing decent football then the season still holds hope for me. We can sit and discuss what a disappointment it?s been at the end of it.

Digging a little deaper into Wednesday night's game I have looked at couple of factors and one that Kieran has pointed out.

At the end of last season I was as well quite confident of having another push in at the top 4, but this simply won't happen now due to the poor and disrupting summer. As we all know, we didn't bring anyone in on time and we lost Carsley which the defence took a lot of getting used to. This was proven by the disastrous start by our back 4. We started poorly this season and fell quickly out of Europe, Yobo looked lost and Lescott looked found out.

A fair few of us panicked from the opening day defeat to relegation scrapping Blackburn, whipped at home to Pompey, getting dumped out of 2 cups and lossing to the redshite in a matter of a few days. Then loosing our top striker... I was for jumping of a cliff.

BUT..... what other team in the league would have stuck together and turned it around??? i think only us ... EVERTON!!!! I reckon we have the bottle and grit to get ourselves back to that position we had at the end of last season and pray we can get a few extra bodies in next summer to press on.

That grit was shown on Monday night, the redshite were all confident that we would roll over. Take away the fact Liverpool are our main rivals, they are a top side, and how we have bent over, lubbed ourselves up and took the shafting of a Sky 4 side in recent years. This year we have managed to hold Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U and gave them all a bloody good headache! Let's not forget how jammy Villa were as well.

So with a back 4 as shakey as Bambi in snow at the start of the season, we look at it now and say in the last 10 matches, we have only conceded 3 goals. That to me is Champions form, despite who is in midfield, or up front; that is title winning defending, what team in the world wouldn't be proud of that??? A defence which includes DeTony Bibberto. Against Liverpool on Monday night, we proved our top ability against a strong Liverpool forward line.

Now of course I'm annoyed at not progressing like we should have, but I'm thrilled at how we have turned it around this season, and compared to our 1st derby this season, the 2nd was one that I won't forget for a long time, lets not forget how a good a side they are, they are title contenders, they have stuffed United and Chelsea this season, they were top of the league if it wasnt for us. So ok, might not like em, but credit to them, but we also proved on Monday night, we deserve respect, and if Liverpool aint gonna give us respect, then we?ll rip it out of you!

'Scues me, but the reality is that we are in fact just a much better version than Bolton, and Blackburn, and Tottenham, and etc... What the heck do you think we are? ? not quite as good as Chelsea, or Man Utd, or Arsenal... sad!

I have to agree with you. It was a good performance and a good result, but at the end of the day it was only one point in the Premier League table.

To make it worth anything we have to kick on like we did after the point against MU at Goodison.

To be a top 4 side, you generally have to win the majority of your home games and pick up points away from home especially against your rivals. We done that Monday, now we need to beat Arsenal at home and another draw at Old Trafford would be good.
