The Mail Bag

Building for next year

Another fine backs to the wall performance. An honest view would have to be that Michael Kenrick is, to a large extent, correct in his view. Today, partly because of injuries, we went to Anfield with an inferiority complex. Yet we are not too far away. Why not use the rest of the season to prepare for a top four challenge next season?

This is what I suggest: Our defence is solid. Let's keep Baines at left back with Jags and Lescott in the centre. Give Gosling a sustained run at right back. A while ago on this site, I was mocked for suggesting that he was a future international defender. I still believe I was right. Give Vic a run as striker. (We have no other option at the moment and today, from TV at least I thought he did ok.)

Injuries permitting, give James Vaughan, Jack Rodwell and Jose Baxter as many games as possible; if any money is available in the summer, spend it all on a wide player with pace.

We could start next season with quality throughout the team. Howard, Jagielka, Lescott, Arteta, Fellaini, Cahill and Yakubu. Yes, the Yak. Every class team works hard enough to have a luxury and the Yak is our luxury. With some decent young players coming through, workers like Neville Osman and Pienaar we are not far away from being a top side.

Finally and most importantly, David Moyes must be bold.I wanted him to go in the summer, I hated his contract wrangling, but... he's got the dressing room, he's turned things round, he's ours and he's here for a while.

Let's never go to Anfield again looking for a draw. We are better than them in every way.

Have to agree with Andy, we really need to start beefing up our current squad
About yesterday?s game, I think my neighbours hate me after yesterday's noise in my living room.

Great performance yesterday guys. Gosling really looks class when he came on. Castillo really needs more game time to settle those nerves (too many of his passes went astray). Pienaar just looked class every time he had the ball (the last 10 minutes I just shouted for the guys to pass the fuckin ball to Gosling and Pienaar), for obvious reasons, those tho can really play.

Neville in midfield, no comment. Howard, I forgive you! Cahill, great performance. Jag, you are starting to look world class!

I really can?t see this back four changed...

Best back four in the Premier League, and home grown. An England call-up may be a reality...

Right....so, fella’s, how would getting destroyed at anfield 4-0 whilst we were "building for the future" have helped with next seasons top 4 push? Because that is what would have happened, and if you dont think that you are kidding yourselves. Same goes for our up coming games against man Utd etc.

You retain the dressing room morale and confidence by getting results. Moyes got a result - the best he could in the circumstances. The run of form and games continues, keeps the players motivated, gives us a better chance of winning a cup or pushing up the league prize money table. Which truly helps with a top 4 push....

If he changed the team around and lost 4 on the bounce, you’d be calling for his head...

I?m beginning to think the early progress of Rooney has given some Evertonians a distorted view as to when these lads are ready. Most players in their teens need to be introduced gradually. Throwing these kids in a the deep end in these really big games can destroy their confidence, they find the things they do in training are nowhere near as effective in world class company.

It's a chicken and egg situation, there's no substitute for experience, but the circumstances under which these kids are introduced can make or break them. Moyes knows his lads and like it or not, you have to trust his judgement

I wouldn?t give Gosling a sustained run at right back because Hibbo is playing well ? and because Gosling is a midfielder.

How does taking the lead constitute going to Anfield for a draw? You’ve been sucked in by that fat twat’s comments to hide his own team’s failings.

We hardly had a team to put out so what was Moyes supposed to do tactically? We should be very proud of the team’s display yesterday.

Andy, I'm open to suggestion but I can?t see why Gosling should be a defender. Why not keep him as a winger? Like I say, not knocking the idea, but explain it to me if you would.

Also, surely, long term Neville is our best RB and we haven't even seen Lars yet.

Sorry Andy but in my opinion Victor isn?t a Premier League player, Todd Carty stays on his feet longer. I would play Cahill as a makeshift striker rather the play Vic.

Gosling can play right back, but self-evidently has the ability & pace to do damage up the pitch from midfield. Very impressed with the boy and he?s generating good vibes from the manager & coaches; possible future star.

Him, Baxter, Rodwell and even Agard should have been tried in the Carling Cup, as Brett suggests. But Moyes never does that, which is counter-productive in the long run. Such a shame because if you consider the benefit to EFC of one of these boys making the cut it?s massive. We save money on transfers and probably on wages for a while, then we have a valuable asset (just in case things went pear-shaped).

It seems to me we have a batch of excellent young players who, judging by the brief sights we?ve had of them, can play a part in our future. I think that?s fantastic. Contrast that with other clubs such as Spurs and the current media darlings (but boring lucky bastards) Aston Villa.

Victor did well in the first game, but still not sure overall. James Vaughan is the unluckiest kid in football. There is clearly a possibility that this kid?s career will be over before it?s begun. I SO hope he gets the chance to recover, get really fit and get back in the team. It must be fucking his mind up to think that he?s been injured for almost 3 years. He has everything needed to succeed except luck. He?s fast, strong, brave & has an eye for goal. Get well young man.

The Yak was off colour this season. Having said that, so was everyone until Oct/Nov. My concern is that he?s a big lad and an achilles injury means no running for a long time. He?s got a job on his hands to get down to fighting weight. I think current target is end of this year isn?t it? ? which means forget him for first half of next season too. Again, we have Lukas Jutkiewicz, and it?s of little benefit to him to be getting a numb arse every week from sitting on the bench.

if I could wish for one thing next season from Moyes it would be put our kids in the Carling Cup. Oh yes, and NEVER play with such a stretched formation as yesterday because it?s unfair on our defence and looks awful. 9-0-1 is effective, but there?s a bit of a give-away about the art of counter-attacking in the name. You need to be set up to attack when the opportunity presents itself. In that regard Pienaar ran his plumbs off, and Gosling was getting forward late on. But too much deep throat for comfort.

Final word: I thought Jags? marshalling of Torres was awesome. The man reads trouble like the best Italians of the 60?s & 70?s. In front of Capello too. If I were Yobo, I?d be worried. But I have much time for Joe. He?s been with us since Moyes took over and he?s a top man. I?ve always thought he could play as a covering midfielder/sweeper like Vieira. He?s strong, quick and has good control.

Reasons to be cheerful...

From what I?ve seen of Victor this season he is a league one player. The only youngster that I?ve thought didn?t look out of place on a Premier League pitch, for us this season, was Rodwell. He has looked fairly comfortable, not good, but comfortable.

I just can?t see Vaughan making it, as much as I thought he would be good, he?s missing far too much of his formative years through injury. I can?t see him managing to catch up on these missed seasons and whenever he comes back in he looks no better than before.

I?m afraid that a tilt at the top-4 is going to need a new, pacy striker as back-up/partner for the Yak, a winger or 2 to give some natural width and a threat for opposing full-backs and a defensive midfielder who can play a bit. To bring in quality in each of those positions we?re looking at a minimum bill of £30M just to start with.

Let?s be realistic, the youngsters we have just won?t take us into the top 4, we?d more likely be looking at the bottom 4.

I too am worried about Yobo. This is the first time we have had a big name player that I can?t see getting back in the team (injuries and suspensions aside). Jags and Baines were close but were not really big name players. Yobo has been linked with the likes of Arsenal.

So, as Moyes continues to build (tries to) we are going to get an increasing number of big name players forced to sit on the bench and the question is, Can we keep these players happy?

I like to think we would play 4-4-2 at some stage, meaning Cahill MAY have to be dropped. With Fellaini coming good it?s possible Neville could be dropped... yes I know he?s not a big name player but he?s the Captain!

Telling time for Moyes I feel!

Viv, I seen Gosling before he joined us and to me he looked a natural wingback, which, considering our lack of pace out wide, would be a major asset.

Kevin, I tend to agree with you about Vic, in fact I suggested a while ago that he should be sold. However, that isn?t going to happen at the moment... so, the more he plays. the more we are likely to see the best of him.

Brett, I thought the same about Baines a few games ago, one injury or suspension and Yobo gets his chance.

Having seen only approx 120 mins of Gosling I?m already convinced that he is a far better option than Osman.

I?m not too worried by having to defend at Anfield for 90 mins, losing Arteta was the final nail in the coffin for us as a side who could go their and match them. Just look at the stats for Monday's derby and you will see how even that game was. It?s not just the number of injuries, its the fact that they are all key players. As someone quite rightly stated, its the equivalent of the RS losing Torres, Alonso and Gerrard.

With the players available, please tell me how we could have gone gung ho? It would have been suicide and only for Howard we would have won. Ignore the fat waiter, he made his rep on playing defensive the hypocritical bastard. To draw the two games all things considered was outstanding and the players deserve credit for the effort they put in to a man.

Late on, when the game was stretched was the only time the RS really looked like scoring ? had we been that open for the full 90, then we?d have taken a right beating. The waiter can say what he likes, I don't give a shit what that little tosser says, but in reality we played to the best of our ability with the players available. If he?s too short sighted to see that then he?s an even bigger fool than I gave him (very little) credit for in the first place.

No strikers and our 2 most influential midfielders missing and we get a draw, what else do people want?? Take out Torres, Keane, Ngog, Gerrard & Alonso from their squad and let's see how they perform then.

Benitiez makes me sick with his bleating ? the bloke wants to get his own house in order before he starts whining about Everton's. I hope we smash 'em to bits in the replay just to see his stupid smug mug pulling out all the excuses he can for his 2-man team.

Everton may not be the most pleasing on the eye, but I tell you what ? if you can find me a better unit, a better defensive unit and an all-round better ?team? than Everton, I?ll be astonished. The RS won most of their titles, leagues & cups included built on a solid defence, so he should maybe also ?know his history? before he lays into us.

I?d like to finish this rant with the C word but I?ll refrain ? you all know what I?m taling about.

Up the blues.

Liverpool’s many League titles were based on going 1-0 up and passing back to Clemence for the remainder of the match. Coincidence they have no League titles since the backpass rule was introduced in 1992? I think not!

Will, genius point!

Castillo, Osman blah blah ? they all ran themselves to a stand still... much respect.

If Yobo were to go to a side placed higher in the league he would be involved in squad rotation... this is just a sign that things are looking bright for the blues.

Harold Jonson: No, Cahill is not suspended for the replay (but he will be if he gets booked in the next game as I think he is 1 card away from a one match ban... after 5 cards the player has automatic one match ban that kicks in one week after the booking). I think Jolly Lescott may be one card away as well, so I guess Yobo will come back when ?Roger? picks up another booking.

When Cahill is out, hopefully Saha is available... I?d like to see Vaughan back but sounds like he is 8 weeks or so away (hopefully he gets back and stays injury free so he can push on for us next season).
