The Bitter Merseyside Derby

Comments (37)

There's nothing particularly new here that hasn't been stated in other posts but I just wanted to look at things from a slightly different angle.

Regarding relationships between the two sets of fans, things have deteriorated over the years and I for one can't stand the majority of kopite bullshit. It's not friendly banter anymore, it's snidey, bitter and nasty at the best of times.

After Sunday's game, I just feel strongly that this is inflamed by comments such as those made by the Liverpool manager. In the past he's aimed a back-handed swipe at EFC as a small club.

The comments coming out of the mouths of some LFC supporters and their very limited manager regarding Everton's tactics on Sunday were nothing short of hypocrisy (as usual) ? especially as these same tactics have been employed by LFC in Europe. He's recently had a go at Ferguson, the United manager, which again struck me as hypocritical.

There's a complete lack of class with Benitez (even worse than Houllier) and I think he adds to the deteriorating relations between the two sets of fans. He's clearly riled by EFC as he wasn't as clever as David Moyes in turning strategy to successful tactics ? despite the gulf in investment between the two clubs.

He clearly thinks the reds have a God-given right to silverware, possibly because they've paid for it ? but someone needs to tell him that it's tough luck if the opposition doesn't just roll over and die. (For the record, I also felt the same way about Wenger when he made a similarly arrogant statement regarding the Spurs defence a few years ago).

If we employ the same tactics e against Man Utd on Sunday and get a result, does anyone think the FSW will be complaining then? He's a classless, arrogant moron of a man. A true kopite, you could say.

Rafael Benitez annoyed me with his stupid after match comments. Maybe he is just angry because even with his stupid tinkering and rotation policies he has failed to beat us in 2 meetings.

Has anyone else noticed that he never gives praise to another team when Liverpool are defeated. He prefers to talk about how much "QUALITY" and possession his team had rather than admit they were beaten by the better team.

An excellent post, Mike. All the money in the world can?t buy class or integrety and Liverpool FC, their players, their supporters and their manager are proof of that.

I am enjoying this man slowly cracking up before our eyes. The pressure on him is telling. He is basically picking a fight with everyone who is a threat to him ? Zralex, his employers and now Everton. I take his ridiculous bleatings as a compliment.

I totally agree with Mike Hughes, and his comments regarding the FSW. He employs the same tactics whenever he is in Europe, but because the Champions League is deemed a more respected trophy, he believes it is then acceptable to use this tactic. He has to look at his own team's frailities before he should pass judgement on our beloved blues.

Moyes got the tactics right on the day and with the team he was able to put out. Take their three best players out of the equation as we had to do with Arteta, Yak and Screech and see how his wonderfully expensive performing mercenaries would react. Spurs away in the League Cup is your answer.

Looking at the team put out on Sunday, that whole team cost less than Keane?s transfer fee never mind Ladyboy Torres. Incidentally, given the stick Gerard had to endure, hats off to him for the way he played, he in mind was a close third for man of the match behind Jags and Lescott.

The fat wine waiter made snide remarks about the fact that we just went there not to get beat, I always thought that what all teams do, anything else is a bonus.

He has a poor memory, when they beat Chelsea at the Bridge, 1-0 ? something they have not done for years, they did what he is accusing us of doing, and that is defending in depth.

After his rather foolish attempt to ridicule Sir Alex, they have not won a match. Keep it up fat boy.

Just wanted to say that I thought that Moyes?s comments after the game were great. He did not take the bait offered by Benitez and by saying that Everton act with dignity & style he is clearly saying Liverpool & Benitez lack both..... fair play to you David Moyes.

James Bernard: I hadn?t spotted it but you?re so right ? he never does, does he?

I?m starting to suspect that Benitez loses large amounts of money at cards, he seems to be unable to stop himself revealing what?s getting under his skin. It should be music to the ears of Moyes and Alex Ferguson.

Don?t be fooled that all tthis posturing of only one team wanting to play BS as being purely down to the FSW ? it has been a long-held trait of our neighbours to trash anyone they can?t beat on their own midden. Forest were a constant thorn in their sides in the 70s and Wimbledon in the 80s.If we had just had a bit more money and an even better team in the last five years, they would have crumbled under the pressure and would be a mid-table team at best.

They honestly believe that the label ?Champions? only applies to them and them alone. Please god let it be a long long time in fact make that never before they are crowned champions of England.

The longer it goes the more bitter and twisted and ridiculous they appear. If it wasn?t for the constant media affection for them, they would be under even more scrutiny. Unfortunately they will get both new investors and a new manager before the start of next season. So let?s enjoy the FSW?s remarks for the remainder of the season.

Team talk for the replay: just play FSW comments and off we go.

Don?t get angry with what he is saying, just enjoy the fact that he is smarting. it?s like Wenger calling Bolton dirty a few years back, he said this because Bolton got stuck in and his team could not cope.

When an oppossing "TOP 4" manager praises you it means they have just collected another 3 points off you and you did not dare to upset them. Lets not get carried away and go at them at Goodison, it is the only time that they look dangerous. Let's defend deep and attack them at the right time like the Monday night game but hopefully Felli doing more damage than Ossie/Vic.

Asked by a netural Client, was I pleased with yesterday?s result, I replied Yes, considering we had a patched-up team, kids on the bench and Arteta unable to play. My Boss made the remark that Everton always makes excuses for not winning "... what a load of unladylike bollocks!!" He is a Liverpool supporter and it should be them that?s worried for not beating us, in our present state, at Anfield.

You have to respect Davey for keeping his cool and making the remark that at Everton have dignity and class. Just so the right remark to make and how very true.

Better a bitter Blue than a Rancid Red.

I think Beneathus is quality viewing when he starts his griping. Just sit back and enjoy. It's a compliment towards us that he is moaning again. It's great fun watching Rafa's meltdown and it only reinforces my belief that once a player or manager joins the shite they instantly become a Gobshite... Carry On Griping, Rafa.

I agree entirely with the sentiments here as Rafa Benitez has absolutely no class whatsoever and having a Catalan Dad from Barcelona I have a second Real Madrid-related reason to hate the gormless bastard.

HOWEVER, can we have some of the dignity DM was talking about and stop with this stereotyping waiter business. It's like someone calling you a Scouse robber, or a Chinese chippy-owner.

Snide, bitter, tactically inept, money wasting, ranting, arrogant, nonsense-spouting shitehawk is plenty...

Personally i rarely give a monkey?s about anything the RS say or do except against us. Ignoring them is my way of despising them. However, I think we should now start a petition or something to make sure this guy stays there forever. Write to papers supporting him, ring 606 and demonstrate your support for the FSW in whatever way possible because, with him there, they will always be second class, fourth place gobshites with no class and a misplaced superiority complex.

Setanta Sports earlier today conducted a poll about Benitez?s comments in the post match interview about how Liverpool wanted to win and we just wanted to defend. This is due to a degree, but the poll has it at 75% that fans think he was out of line at such a comment with 25% in favour of his views.

On the face of it, negative tactics by Moyes or not, a draw at their arena is a great result; alright they are better in just about every department, but it is right on the money that if trophies were handed out for hard work and endeavour then Everton would be top of the pile.

I was less than happy wih the subsequent draw, with all due respect to Doncaster, a home tie with Villa would not have been my choice, the recent defeat still rankles with me, and if we do overcome the RS again then we are going to have a job on our hands to reach the last eight.

Howard was at fault for the goal yesterday but redeemed himself with some great stops thereafter to keep us in it. I am looking forward to the replay but a tie at Goodison may favour them than it will us. Still in with a good chance to put right previous heartbreaks though. The Manchester United fixture has been moved to Saturday 30th because of the drawn game.

How about the FSW gets them back onto the training ground in the next day or so to work on set pieces? How about the FSW gets back on the training ground for shooting drills?

Fuck him. He was disgusting on the post match interview. His team played defensively Monday night and dropped two points, and then his squad can?t hit the net from 6 feet out and can?t penetrate with through balls. I hope we come out of the next two matches with something, and no injuries so we can bottle them up on that Wednesday night. We have class and dignity, and they have a completely faceless squad except for their captain. Why would you ever want to support a faceless team?

Jimmy Crack... Me too! Loved it even more today, we?re outnumbered big time in work, The gobshites had gone into overdrive.

I was really disappointed when a young blue colleague who normally takes no shite from them, sat quiet all morning and when he went missing for what seemed like the longest dinner break in history, I thought he?d cracked and had had enough.

I needn?t have worried, he came back and as they tore into him he just stood up and without saying a word took his shirt off. You should have seen their faces when they read his tee shirt!

The bad news is that even the Liverpool fans are beginning to question Benitez?s judgement which means it won?t belong before he either storms off in a huff because his piggy bank has been confiscated or he?s told to pack his bags.

I think we should go easy on him ? I want him to stay.

Firstly, calling Rafael Benitez "a fat Spanish waiter" makes us look like the "bitter blues" we so do not want to be viewed as.

Secondly, I would welcome Benitez?s exit from LFC, as he is embittering me towards them in a way I do not like. I have always disliked Liverpool Football Club ? they are, after all, an establishment which owes its origin and existence to the fact that they did not and do not want to be what we are-but I do not want to hate them with the loathing bitterness which the current climate, which has been stoked by Benitez (and dealt with brilliant by our manager) is currently encouraging me to feel.

I would rather LFC didn?t exist and I love Everton, but let?s leave the bitterness to them and cheer on our team next Wednesday. How about giving the "Fat Spanish waiter" jibes a rest, and let him make a fool of himself on his own. He is not a bad Spanish loser ? just a bad loser. Like Wenger, like Ferguson, like many others. Gracias.

Paul Morgan, I once went to watch the ice hockey in Manchester at the MEN arena. The annoying stadium announcer in there used to shout over the tannoy "Remember here we don?t boo the other team, we just cheer twice as loud for the Manchester Storm". Is this your philosophy towards the RS ? don?t boo them, just cheer twice as loud for the Blues?! It?s not how football rivalry works.

I have a bit of a dilemna, well I had one for all of 30 secs, I used to think that any team other than Man U winning the league was preferable, even Liverpool at a push.

I confess given the choice between the two, I confess to admitting that I would prefer Man U than RS winning the league.

Thats a real hard thing to admit from a scouser, but you know, the RS don’t deserve to win anything and the attitude of the fans and the manager has given an edge to rivalry in the city.

The divide between our clubs is too great to give token support and so I withdraw it..

I support Everton FC and any team playing against Liverpool.

Alan Clarke,

Quite apart from the stereotypical connotations (that have been mentioned here and in another thread) which are connected with calling Benitez a "fat Spanish waiter", it’s also an insult to Spanish waiters - as it insinuates that a typical Spanish waiter is arrogant and constantly slates the food and service of smaller restaurants.

The sheer amount of bile andn hatred emanating from these threads completely puts the phrase "we don’t care what the rs say" to shame.

As Paul said, Rafa’s making a big mug of himself all on his own, let’s just leave him to it and laugh along.
