Man U getting over-confident?

Comments (30)

IMHO there are two things in our favour for Saturdays match with the Red Mancs:

1) Our work ethic
2) Man Utd's over-confidence.

Reading the Manc boards, they are all talking about how worthy they would be as league champions, nothing about any kind of a threat from Everton on Saturday.

In fact it's hard to find any thread of substance on the Man U boards that talk about Saturday's game at all! There doesn't seem to be much talk, mind games, etc, coming from SAF either.

There is no doubting if they play at their best, they will beat any team, including us, but we hopefully won't make it easy for them. With or without Cahill, I am sure we will give them a tough game, hopefully get a good result and raise a few more eyebrows. As long as the ref doesn't play too big a part and give them a player advantage or a gift penalty we should do ok.

Screech didn't pick up a booking on Wednesday, so he is bound to get one on Saturday, if we go by his past form. If he gets a yellow, he has to tread very carefully, so he doesn't get himself a red.

Being confident is definitely a good thing, but being over-confident to the point of being dismissive of your opposition is a real danger. Certainly SAF is no fool, but he doesn't have to go on the pitch and play. Are the Man Utd players getting to the position of over-confidence and complacency?

Just a thought for a new tactic, if they cut a basin shape within Felliani’s hair do, then when Howard get’s the ball he could just place it on his head and let him run with it. The only way to get the ball off him would be to foul him. Does anyone know if this would be illegal?

Ungentlemanly conduct, probably. Mind you, the Big Fella gets that simply by walking out of the tunnel these days.

Dave, I was thinking the exact same thing at the Arsenal game, i figure that when he gets into the opposition area the goalkeeper will just be able to pick it up out of his hair.

Flawless plan other than that!

Just read a rumour that Screech is out with a shin complaint... pity, I was looking forward to more of the same from Wednesday night..

And to suggest that united?s football is on some kind of pedestal at the moment is simply not true... they?ve been scoring goals but they haven?t been overly impressive...

They are flattering to deceive... we could do them!

The OS has put a question mark over the Big Fella’s fitness for tomorrow (shin injury).

Calling the dude Big Bird is something we can all relate to. Sesame Steet has been on since the 60s. But how many Everton followers know Saved by the Bell and the ?goofy? character of Screech?

Though think how happy we?d be If Moyes could swing an 11th hour signing of Tiffany Amber Thiessen...

When the big Fella reaches the edge of the area, he just needs a "wingman" in either side of him. He flicks the ball out of his "hair basket" to one of them who side-foots it into the empty net?!!

I have mixed feelings about this game. I want Man utd or ANYONE else to win the league other than the red shite. Obviously, "I?d love it if we beat them" but, if we put 3 points in Utd?s pocket after resting everybody for the replay then I?d still be happy. We could take that shower out of 2 trophies this month.

Come on you blues! (After maybe Saturday ? still not sure...)

So let me get this right, you seriously give similar consideration to stopping Liverpool doing anything as you do to us doing something?

Either you’re an Evertonian, or just a sick idiot who spends too much time looking the wrong way. I don’t give two fucks about the consequences of what we do on Saturday. I might rather someone else wins the league than Liverpool, but a) NEVER at the expense of us getting a result, and b) Liverpool won’t win it anyway.

And if we really are without both Cahill AND Fellaini then we are stuffed anyway, sadly. I want 4th place and I don’t give a shit who gets in the way.

Nick/Stuart, I know sweet FA of ?saved by the bell? or Tiffany Amber Thiessen. Not wishing to be ignorant of any matters Evertonian I felt duty bound to check Tiffany her out through Google Images...thanks for that! :-)

ManU over-confident? I don?t think so, but we are capable of getting at least a point, but it will require another 100% energy packed shift that I?m not sure the lads have in the tank after recent excertions. I think Utd?s bigger and fresher squad, benefitting from an additional day?s rest, may prove a test too many this weekend. I just heard that in the season to date ManUtd have had 270 shots on target compared to Everton?s 131, a telling statistic of how they dominate possession, fashion chances and are not shy to fire shots of from outside the box. A rocket from outside the box to break their clean sheet record and bag us the points would be a massive boost... make it happen blues!!

Oh dear John G - definitely not an EFC pc thing to say. Even if it presented them the league and saved them from bankruptcy, we must want to win - especially down the road here in Stretford. The players will be in no two minds about that, I’m sure.

I doubt very much that Timmy will be ready for tomorrow, but the Fellaini situation is more interesting. Never mind who we’re playing in the cup, Moyes wants PL points, and will go with the Big Fella if he can.

Maybe you?re right about looking the wrong way Alan. Those 3 points and the confidence recieved from winning there would go a long way with our team. And a win is a win.

But...

All summer with Liverpool fans bleating about how their team is back on top? Pictures of Stevie GBH holding the trophy up in the papers? A year of pundits talking about the "champions of England"?

Don?t make out that the rivalry stops when we?re not playing each other. And don?t pretend that you didn?t look at their wigan result with a bit of a grin.

Anyway, I am an Evertonian and if we stuff the Mancs I?ll be shouting louder than most in the pub.

Re the original post, Manc fans may well be complacent but they can afford to be because Ferguson certainly won?t. He hasn?t won umpteen trophies by scratching his hole, sadly. It?s a nice thought though Brian, and I pray there?s more truth in it than I believe!

I think rest Jags, Fella, Cahill, Arteta, Osman - put them on the bench - and give Yobo, VDM, Anichebe, Gosling, Rodwell a run out. We can still keep it tight at the back and bring them on in the 2nd half if/when needed. At least they will have a bit of a break for Wednesday. I would rather us go for the cup game - we have 6th locked up and we wont catch Villa/Arsenal now - especially with no new faces coming in.

If we can go to Old Trafford tomorrow and get any kind of result it would be a magnificent achievement. They are, after all, champions of Europe, have home advantage, and while our away record this season has been magnificent, to go to the Theatre of dreams and get something would keep me in high spirits for the rest of the weekend.

Add to that the encounter between Chelsea and "them", on Sunday, which I am looking forward to somewhat.

So all I ask for is a Everton result at Old Trafford, and a Chelsea win. It could happen...

I really hope the big fella’s "complaint" isnt shin splints. If it is, it takes a long time to get it sorted and he’d be in and out of the team from now on. The last premiership player who had that (whose name escapes me) hardly played for 6 months.

Had it myself in the past, took over a year to get it sorted.

I think a few of you must have magic lamps ... we do not have adequate replacements for at least four and probably more of our team..Beating or drawing with Man Utd should be the prime aim of every fan and thats what every football team should want to do..Mancs hate us much more than Liverpool fans do and I for one am proud of the football achievements of our city which is better than Manchesters...so lay off the hate for Liverpool crap...I am a scouser and proud of it....But EFC are short of numbers and it showed in the latter stages against Arsenal when we could not sub Arteta and Fellaini who were treading water 15 minutes before the end.
That is going to be our Achilles heel before the seasons finished.
Since when by the way, are we NAILED on for 6th...do the maths.

Can someone confirm the last time we beat them at Old Trafford in a league game?

I seem to remember some time in 1992. when Beardsley scored at least one in a 3-0 victory.

Imagine that tomorrow!

Does anybody honeslty believe that the players or manager will go to OT to go through the motions? I don?t, and nor do I want them to. If we can get a result there it would set us up nicely for Wednesday. If we get a bad defeat, it may start the doubts.

If DM plays an over weak team, do you think the other lot will be more or less determined to beat us on Wednesday? The only important match on the agenda is Man U tomorrow evening, there are 3 points to play for and we should want them badly, regardless of the way it affects other teams.

6th place is worth everything, Lorcan, should Man Utd win the League Cup against Spurs on March 1st, because then we would get an automatic Uefa-Cup spot! And if that doesn?t happen, we can hope that a top 5 side wins the FA Cup. Or even better, we win the damned thing ourselves! Beating the shite on Wednesday would be a great start to that!

If they are over confident, they have every right to be, the results they have been geting. I am going for Fellaini to bring the run of clean sheets to end and grab a point for us with a trademark header.

From what I understand, Cahill is just 1 yellow card away from a suspension and has a bruised foot. Further, the second Van Persie slammed in that 93rd minute goal past Howard, our quest for a top 4 spot has taken a serious knock, although not fatal at this early stage. In other words, the Man Utd game is less significant after having drawn Le Arse and by all means Cahill should be rested.

Do we lie down and wave the white flag at Old Trafford? Of course not, we fight, but risking Cahill is not worth it. Beating the shite on Wednesday, that is all that matters right now!

If Tim Howard stays on his feet and doesn’t end up on his arse everytime someone has a shot at him we just might sneak a nil nil draw.
