Going well

Comments (21)

At the end of the day, for all their stars, they did us on a penalty. No shame in being beaten by them at Old Trafford and I bet the ref had a sleepless night wondering if he should have given us one back (ok, probably not!!).

I cannot believe that, of all the clubs around, we could not get one striker for a loan deal??? Surely there was one. I know there is no money and the way these banks are collapsing it is only a matter of time before some of the clubs start also and I fear we will be one. Why can no rich guy see the potential here with the young guys we have?

When you think of it, if a very wealthy guy came in here, there would need to be 3 good signings and then 3 more good quality fringe players to rotate things a bit and give our young lads a run; we are not at all a bad team.

Whatever happens this year, Moyes really needs to blood all the young guys; to be perfectly honest, I would even sacrifice 6th place for this to happen. They will have to be used next year as we will have no money in the summer either and what is the point in blooding them in the new season (I still think we will get 6th even if he does this, just stating if we don't then it will serve a purpose).

Big Vic must go and sadly Osman with him. We need a striker. When is Saha returning??? Can anyone imagine how fat the Yak will be after months of no training, it will take him the whole of next season to get fit!! The lads must be wrecked after the effort of the last few weeks but they have been great to support lately.

Sorry John but this feels a bit knee-jerk to me. After every defeat someone "must go". Who on earth will replace them?

And does it make sense to sacrifice sixth? The lower we finish, the less attractive a proposition we are to both our established players and our "young guys" ? who it must be said do get there chances under Moyes, albeit later than many would like.

Sam, I do think John has a point or two.

To complete with the top 4 we need to start signing some top players, at least 4 top signings to be able to complete even with Villa... 2 strikers 1 creative attacking midfielder, that can also be used in wide positions should we need to rotate. 1 one holding midfielder, one that can actually tackle.

I know in today's game top players means top dollars and huge paychecks, but that the name of the game these days.

To be the best, we need to start associating the club with the best, we need to start knocking on the doors of big sponsors like Vodafone; Brittish Airways; Mercedes; LG; Phillips and Co. Big sponsor means big budget... in our case meanse big players.

We must start sending scouts to the South American, South African, America and Russian leagues to find good players. (This is what Arsenal have done since Wenger came on board.)

And get rid of all the lazy administrators and backroom staff at the club whose hearts aren?t with the club (only there for the paycheck).

John, not sure I share your thoughts on the club collapsing. Quite the opposite, Everton are trying to ballance the books and although that results in no new players it is a sensible approach given the current economic situation. Clubs like Liverpool who have huge debt but continue to spend are more at risk than we are. No doubt some White Knight will come along and bail them out but if that doesn?t happen then there?s a very real chance that RBS will call in the administrators ? Now what valuable assets will they sell off first...

Ive noticed in recent years Wigan seem to find lots of decent new players eg; Chimbonda, Palacious and now the new guy who’s name I dont remember who played well against the ’pool..They are scouting in South America and picked up Columbians and Hondurans etc..these guys are now giving large returns in transfer fees which for a small new club like Wigan is fantastic..What is going on with our scouting system ?? We tend to buy players who are already established or club trotters like the Yak..If we have no scouts then we must use Gosling and Rodwell to develop them and give them experience against the big boys..its obvious that Vic no matter how he tries will never be a real striker..he is a target man and an outlet for the defence but he doesn’t score very often..I also dont see Vaughn cutting it as he lacks ball control and is too aggresive..he will be a liability whenever he is fit to play which is not very often...
I would just like to find out what our scouts are up to !!

Trevor,

Using Wigan as a point of reference is a good exampe, however, look at our players.

Arteta, Cahill, Lescott, Yobo, Jagielka, Pienaar......all of these players were purchased for fees that would easily double or in some cases triple/quadruple if the player was sold now.

Our scouts have done well in my opinion. None of the above players were considered good enough to risk a punt for the Prem, obviously Moyes and his scouts saw something that the other scouts did not.

I just wished we had found a Palacious and Valencia NOW... instead of paying over the odds for Fellaini who was a panic buy to my mind. I reckon WE have missed a few other Wigan discoveries like Figeroa etc. The reason why I mention them is that I played against them myself when they were in the Lancashire Combination... they have come a long way since then.

I reckon Lescott, Jags and Pienaar were all good buys but Arteta was well known and had been club-trotting, same as the Yak... We are carrying a lot of injury-prone players and when I see us linked with Smith it makes my blood boil.

I'm not against what you say, Anthony, but I just wish we had a bigger squad because they are beginning to look like Alamo defenders. Jags and Lescott are like Crocket and Bowie... I think the whole team have been heroic defensively and the back four have been magnificent. Just hope it can carry us through to the end of the season in the top 6!!!

The simple fact is we cannot afford to blood young players in this season as a top six finish is vital and top 4 is still possible. We need to be in European competition so players will want to join/stay with us that are a very high quality and will get us a squad to compete reguarly for the Champions League places which has to be the ambition with the quality of our squad. Remember only the best is good enough for our great club ? don?t settle for average finishes like seventh or eigth!

Andrew ? Manny, Pienaar, Arteta to name a few were nothing special when they came on loan... I'am sure Moyes's man-management skills can pull him round; plus Hughes never wanted Jo ? he was signed while Sven was manager.

Let's give the lad a chance if we get him, he was a good player in Russia so I'am sure there's some class in there somewhere.

@ Ricardo Humphries

I don?t disagree with either you or John in essence, Ricardo... in an ideal world we would make new signings. But in reality we just don?t have the cash, and to me saying "get rid" of players and hoping the finance will look after itself is naive. The sponsorship call might be a good one but I think we?re tied to Chang for a bit yet, and to my knowledge we don?t have potential sponsors knocking at the door like Man Utd etc do.

Ricardo,

What is it exactly you do? Do you work in the football management/chairmanship arena?

You seem to think you know exactly the number of signings we need, which players and in which exact positions.

You also know about who we should be approaching for sponsorship in the corporate world in these credit crunch deals. Wheeling and dealing, eh?

Add to that you know exactly where in the world we should be sending scouts these days to sign the best players, and what Arsenal?s management and scouting team are up to.

Finally, you know the work ethos of backroom staff at Goodison so that you can make such suggestions as they are only in it for the paycheck and have no heart in it, and to get rid of them (great compassion there, I must say).

Ricardo, can you tell me the lottery numbers for next weekend? You seem to think you know everything fucking else!!

Without appearing to sound like Benitez, there is a certain justification that opposition teams get a poor deal at Old Trafford in way of decisions.

This was illustrated last night, and while I concur fully that to go there and come away with a 0-1, stopping them scoring from open play, we can all hold our heads up.

Unfortunately, a defeat it was, and to Manchester United - not one of my favourite sides!.

One good thing- it’s another nail in the Anfield Title coffin. Expect Chelsea to put them out of their misery later this day.

Something amazing happened watchingt the game yesterday - I sat there relaxed, quite quiet and considered for possibly the first time ever. I never expected us to beat Utd yesterday, and to come away as Beth says, with a 1 nil defeat from a slightly iffy penalty is certainly no disgrace.

The silver lining, again as Beth says, is that it means further misery for the RS!

We’ve only lost one out of 6 this season against the big 4 (and Villa, oops!) which is good going when you consider that Chelsea have only managed 1 point from their games against the same sides.

Lets hope that one changes today and they thump that lot over the park.

If you had said we would still be 4 points clear of the chasing pack after that spell of games before we started it then, come on, you would have taken it, surely? The lads have done us proud in recent weeks so let?s hope for a last surge on Wednesday and then carry on picking up points against all the teams below us.

That Man Utd side didn't even get out of 2nd gear, and are perhaps one of the weakest United sides I have seen in recent years.

However when your game plan is to sit back and try and nick a 1-0, chance are you will always lose at Old Trafford.

The one thing that sticks in my mind from the United defeat is that penalty that was given. Is it just me or say the roles were reversed and it was Tiny Tim who had been clipped going into the box. Hands up, how many of you think that the ref would have given a penalty? Not many I?ll bet and do you know what, you?d be right.

So some people are finally beginning to see the light where several players are concerned ? except Moyes and Kenwright. We have a team of hard workers whose efforts are just not enough to match strides with the clubs ahead of us and so this is where we will stay in 6th. Spot until we get some big financing. Sure we were not expected to beat Man Utd but when will ever be as well as Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or even Villa now?

It really stinks to learn we cannot even tempt a fill-in striker on loan. Let's face it, Fellaini has been a big flop at the price and even though he is young, just like Anichebe, I don?t see the potential for much improvement. We would have to score twice against Liverpool to progress in the cup and we have shown we cannot do that against the top clubs, even with the other strikers we have. What we have we have to live with at least for this season.
