Olivier Dacourt

Let's face it, during the transfer window just gone we were only ever going to be able to manage loan signings. I'd come to accept this way before the transfer window even opened.

Apart from the glaringly obvious striker shortage (Hat's off Davey for bringing in Jo) and the lack of a direct pacey wideman (Not exactly ten a penny) I still feel we have not sufficiently replaced Lee Carsley. Castillo is IMHO not good enough to play for Everton and holding our midfield is too much responsibility for someone as young as Rodwell, promising though he is.

Seeing that Fulham have agreed to bring Olivier Dacourt in on loan for the rest of the season got me thinking.

Rewind ten years and a young Oliver Dacourt was impressing at the heart of Smiths Everton midfield. Tigerish in the challenge and composed in possesion he quickly became my favourite player at the time. I was gutted when he left after one season. I never did work out why he left. maybe it was the lure of Champions League football at big spending Leeds, maybe he was shit scared of Archie Knox who knows?

I can't help thinking that if he's 80% of the player we saw all them years ago we've missed out on what would have been a superb loan opportunity, admittedley I haven't seen him play in ages but he's been playing at a high standard in Seria A and he's younger than Carsley.

He would have been a great foil for Mikey, Pip could have been re-instated at right back and Hibbo who I must say is playing well at the minute still doesn't have enough quality when he gets into crossing positions for me and for that reason would be relegated to the status of reliable benchwarmer.

All hypothetical I know but I had to get this off my chest. I'd be interested to know what my fellow blues memories of Dacourt are.

I have read that David Moyes was trying to sign both Jo and German Internation Kevin Kuranyi from Schalke in this window.

The deal was to buy at first, then to loan and then the German club pulled out at the last minute! I notice he had a ?25m clause... so maybe there is some cash in the coffers after all! Moyes has been keen on this guy for years and it sounds like a move in the summer could be on the cards.

Your memory is slightly flawed 'cos Ollie went back to Lens when we sold him ? not Leeds Utd. One of the reasons he left was he was getting fed up with the number of yellow cards he was getting (as did Materazzi). But I think the fact that we needed the cash was the main reason.

I wouldn?t've minded Dacourt on loan until the end of the season, even at his age he?s still better than what we?ve got in the defensive midfield positions.

Smacks too much of getting Tommy back last year, sure there is a good reason why he has been let go, although Howard Kendall getting Peter Beagrie back in '98 must go down as the worst, most desperate loan signing ever.

I seem to remember Dacourt giving Everton fans the bird on his return to English football with Leeds United. Can’t recall exactly why our fans were also giving him some abuse, but I definitely rememeber a bad taste in the mouth.

Anyone recall ??

Dacourt is finished so no point crying over not getting him, the phrase wind back ten years says it all, ten years ago he was worth a punt but not anymore.

Chris Briddon - Materazzi left because he hated this country and this city. His wife was quoted as saying she was scared to go outside. He only joined to make a quick few quid and went back to the same club, Perugia.

Dacourt for me epitomised everything that I despise in a player - came over purely and simply for the money and had no loyalty to anyone. Can’t say I liked him as a player either - he was always yellow carded for snidey ankle tapping fouls which were always blatantly from where I used to sit in the family enclosure.
A foreign mercenary that I’m glad we got rid of.

Good player, was a touch of quality in a horrible horrible team, but he is well and truly finished. He missed the last 18 months with a cruciate ligament injury, he's 34 this year... I will be surprised if he does anything with Fulham.

I remember him saying positive things about Everton when he left and also getting a good reception when he returned with Leeds.

Could be wrong but thats what I recall.

Dacourt is finished and you’ll see that soon enough. He’s only played a handful of games in one and a half seasons, including his sole appearance this season.

Let someone else make the mistake for once.

Not good enough for us.

We have 4 players who can play in his position so why bother chasing shadows.

Rather we sign Castillo. He has the right mentality and when fit is as good as Dacourt ever was.

As for Ollie, too old, past it.

Good on you Moyes, keep the faith. I know our squad is thin but crack on for the next set of games starting on Wednesday against the shite.

Ray Robinson, you summed up Dacourt perfectly; that?s exactly how I remember him. The biggest disappointment of the transfer window for me was the late failure to sign Chris Eagles... He is just what we are missing at the moment and is going to be a fine player.
