The Bold David Moyes

Comments (79)

I posted a letter a couple of days ago entitled "Not good enough". In it I said that the being bold never entered the mind of David Moyes.

I take that back. Tonight he was bold. Maybe he had no choice but I prefer to think that this was a change in thinking. Gosling and Rodwell were superb substitutions and did us proud. When AVDM came on I honestly thought, "His time has come". I've defended him in the past and have regretted it but his cross for the winner will at least leave one good memory of his time at GP. What a wonderful night.

I’M SO FUCKING HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I’m sure you lot are too!

I’ve just now found out the result (6.45pm EST time or 11.45pm UK time)...I had to go out after work and then meet the Mrs for a food shop and then plow through a rather long text version of the match report (haven’t seen any live action or clips yet) but just looking at the substitutions this looks like a changed DM.....they should give the man the keys to the frigging city (so he can lock out that fat fucking shite that runs that red mob across the way there).

WELL DONE MEN IN BLUE!

WELL DONE DM!!

And Gerrard is still a wanker!!!!!!!!

Here Here, Andy, a fantastic night. Can't fault Moyes at all, he made all the right calls at the right times. Gosling and especially Rodwell look fantastic prospects. Rodders was the most comfortable in possession on the whole pitch and I include the best little Spaniard we know in that. Full credit to VdM for the cross as well, I think we all know that he has the potential to be a very useful player for us being the only natural winger in the squad.

So happy tonight, I work in Dublin and it's all red gobshites at work. For once I can't wait to go in in the morning.

The fact that AVDM had a hand in the winner is just pure gold! I agree - when he came on I couldn’t help but smile - I thought something would happen... I had visions of him sticking the 5th and winning penalty away or something, but what transpired will do so very very nicely!!! When he leaves, which he surely still will - he can leave with the knowledge that even though he really fucked us all off for a few years; he also contributed to one of the best moments Evertonians have had for a long long time!

Agree credit should go to Moyes for sticking him on for Pip rather than maybe Castillo who may have been a more obvious choice!

I’m in heaven... Enjoy the moment my fellow blues - Enjoy!!!

Andy I hope you're right. I to was delighted to see Moyes use substitutes to try and win a game instead of reacting to going behind. It paid off and all of them had a positive impact. Hopefully this will give him confidence to make this a regular feature of our game plan. Well done to all of the boys tonight a great victory over the RS well over due to. We can use this win to kick on and they can sink into hopeless and win fuck all which is what they deserve.

Such a pity that Benitez doesn’t have it anywhere within himself to lose with grace. He could have done himself and his team some good tonight by taking Moyes and Wenger as examples of managers with some class, particularly when it comes to magnanimity in defeat.

Despite their defeat of a very poor Chelsea, me thinks this charmless Iberian has blown it. Unable to beat us in 3 games and utterly lost without 2 players. The idea that he can deliver the league title and champions league is cuckoo land.

The really sad thing is that his bitterness and childishness have directly soured what has broadly been cordial relations between two great clubs, certainly at management level.

What a prick.

Not many people on here tonight moaning about the ref, is there?

The best part for me tonight (apart from the goal, obviously) was the shite playing for pens with loads of time left on the clock.

One more thing, when the picture came back on ITV, did anybody notice Reina and the other gobshites surrounding the ref, what was all that about?

Made an absolute benny of myself in an empty bar jumping around when ossie hit the post. And again with the Reina double save, and again when Timmy missed the header.

The reaction when we scored. I ran round a set of tables 3 times wirh only bout twnety other people looking at me. Than there was a few tears.. Still is.. Proudest moment as a blue..

Didn?t even text any red shite fans! Happy just to sit ans think what just happened!

Alan Kirwin: I haven’t seen anything relating to El Camarero Gordo - the wife and I were too busy shaking hands with fellow Blues in our Blue enclave just outside Dublin, and - to be be fair - a bunch of Irish Reds, who ALL reckoned we deserved it.

Until I hit Sky or The Grauniaid, I can only assume that The Unfeasible Goatee has spat the dummy again. Good, good, good. The Red Wagon goes off the rails. Presumably he’ll say, or has said, that they threw the game to a ’smaller club’ so that they can carry on chasing their Chumps League place.

Brian - I was worried about the ref’s judgments of what was fair, and the cards he was showing. But he stood up and took out the second yellow to send the man off - if respect means anything, that’s in the frame.

I guess they must have been arguing some hopeless offside appeal after the goal. But don’t ask me, ask the cuddly Rafa - when he stops crying.

Just finished watching the Derby. Priceless! The game was broadcasted on Setanta here in the States. The commentators gave credit to our boys and stated that they were the better team, but then they went on to say that it was a blessing in disguise for the shite because they are only focusing on the league and Champs League. GOSLING the GREAT! Ecstatic at that, thoroughly deserved and all the sweeter for it being so long in coming!

Incidentally, just looked at setanta online and this comment from a VILLA FAN is of interest...

"From what I saw of Liverpool they really didn?t seem to want to win that game at all. I only really watched the last ten minutes plus extra time but if that?s how they played for the entire match then they got what they deserved.

As a Villa fan I have to say I am glad it?s Everton we have to play because we?ve already beaten them comfortably this season.

Mind you who knows, they might beat us just as comfortably, we?ll just have to wait and see. But for now I just wanna say well done to the team for beating their biggest rivals."

Good stuff, but they did not beat us comfortably did they!?! Let?s be having them as well on route to long overdue silverware in May!!!!

Let?s dare to dream... I?m backing the lads to sweep all before them on the road to Wembley! (Now you?re gonna believe us, we?re gonna....)

Pretty high SC. Shame that Osman had his roller blades on and couldn?t nick it home at the far post.

Very proud of that performance tonight. We shouldn?t kid ourselves that it was pretty, but it was done with a bit of CLASS AND DIGNITY. We earned the right to play, remained patient when we got the 11v10, made bold substitutions to turn the game in our favour, and won with a goal at the sweetest of moments.

I?d love us to play the RS off the park with flowing football, but it did cross my mind a few times this week that it would be great to get a late goal in a 1-0 ? just to break their little black hearts!

It?s unfair to pick players out but Hibbert deserves a special mention ? in the last month he?s been exceptional and tonight was his finest hour.

Everton, pleasingly, won what must rate as one of the worst football matches I?ve ever seen. Gosling?s score was inspirational stuff in what I can only term anti-football. Liverpool, for all their title pretensions, were awful, with little skill or challenge. If this is a nadir in Everton?s existence, so be it, but for them to reach the point were there are NO FORWARDS on the pitch, no cohesion amongst the team, with several players annonymous and yet a manger earning £3million quid for it is, frankly, appalling.

Aston Villa would stuff this team without breaking sweat under usual conditions. Liverpool didn?t play tonight. Maybe they thought all they had to do was turn up but this cannot hide the fact that Everton must be at the worst situation as a club they have ever been in. I saw Kenwright on the tv and thought both he and Moyes have brought this once great club to this point ? what a bloody shambles! They beat Liverpool ? SO WHAT!

I?m not unhappy that Everton won. It?s more about why the fuck they have to go to such lengths, to such dire circumstances to produce anything like an attempt to win. This is a war of attrition that has been brought about by the club?s own management. The football, whilst pleasingly not hoofball (at least as regular as it has been), is awful. And has been for most of the last 7 years. This to me is the pinnacle of BADNESS. A win is great but at what cost? Can you imagine any of the last 10 Everton managers, for example, not having a forward player in the starting line up?

Read the blog whilst the match was in progress. Everyone is saying how bad the play was. Yet it is all forgotten with the win. Until, that is, the next match when the ritual nonsense is repeated. Why does it have to be like this? I?ve watched Everton, with family and friends, for far too long. What I have seen since Moyes and Kenwright have been involved is absolutely the worst kind of football I have seen.

Moyes seems incapable of raising the standard ? even this win won?t change anything. He?s still got the same problems and still deals with them in his own cackhanded style. One which I am coming to despise. I am entitled to my view. If you are satisfied with it fine, but I?m not and will continue to say so.

All credit goes to Moyes. He was not only bold with his subs but also with his tactics. He was the only manager trying to win the game before pens.

Moyes was brave enough to put two teenagers on who did really well but then to be really brave and take off Neville to put Van der Meyde on was what won us the game.

In the end we were playing with only three defensive players in Jagielka, Lescott and Rodwell. Hibbert and Baines were pushing forward like wingers and then to put Van der Meyde on as another winger was brilliant!

Well done Moyes, you earnt that victory!

Delighted that Stevie GBH had to depart from a game for which eh shoudl clearly have been suspended. I thought it was a cert that he would win the match for them because he’d had another referee in his pocket.

An absolute minger of a match to be fair, but thought we played a good game in extra time. A good mixture of attacking play and control.

Obviously, I’d have taken a goal that was defelcted in off somebody’s left testicle, but it was great to win it with a piece of quality play. More so that it was a youngster who had the cojones to go for it..

There was a lot to remember about the game last night but one thing will always stick in my mind.

Torres was disposessed by a fair challenge from Jagielka and immediately went down like a sack of spuds and laid motionless for about 30 seconds while Arteta took the ball promisingly down the right with two gobshite defenders screaming at him to stop and pointing at the dying ladyboy. No sooner did Arteta stop play than Torres stood up and walked away.

Now I know all players can get up to little tricks and I appreciate that Arteta has won a few freekicks that he wasn’t entitled to over the years, but that incident last night made me feel angrier at a match than I have for years. Not because it was Derby, or because it was Liverpool but because it was blatant cheating, it was obvious it was blatant cheating and the cheating bastard should have been booked.

I don’t condone diving, not even when Mikky does it but at least a diver runs the risk of a booking if the referee sees fit. Lying down pretending to be dead like that prone tart did last night is just despicable. In fact if I was him I would be embarrassed, but I’m not him and he won’t be will he because that is the sort of thing he does isn’t it?

Stephen Stuart, you are insane! You say: "Can you uimagine any of the previous 10 Everton managers starting a game without a striker?"

Well yes, actually, I can. I think every single one of them would’ve started without a recognised striker last night. If they wanted to win the game, anyway. If you hadn’t noticed, we have major injuries to Yakubu, Saha and James Vaughan - our three best strikers. Jo was cup-tied. That just leaves Victor. Training ground bust-ups aside, the lad has shown he is not yet ready to perform at this level. Yet, for some reason, you suggest playing him SIMPLY because he is a striker, ignoring his capabilities! I for one was delighted to see Tim Cahill up front. After all, he has done pretty damn well for us of late in that position.

One final thing: Moyes’ job last night was to get through to the next round of the cup. He achieved it. In doing so, his team restricted Liverpool (a side seriously challenging to be recognised as the best in England) to one real chance on goal.

"One more thing, when the picture came back on ITV, did anybody notice Reina and the other gobshites surrounding the ref, what was all that about? "....

I went mental when we scored, but turned around from my PE pugh to see VDM grab the ball and belt it away from Reina into the RS end, who wanted a quick restart - Pepe the Clown had a swing at him and VDM squared up - all i could think was ’oh no the ref is gonna send em both off and add 5 minutes’!! - thankfully the assistant ref saw it all and booked the spanish idiot.

I would like to express what a disgrace I think it was that when Liverpool went down to 10 men they decided to go with everyone behind the ball and play for Penalties.

Football should be about attacking play and trying to score goals. It made a mockery of the game for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I would like to point out the sarcasm in my voice for those that cant pick up on these things!)

Its fucking different when the boots on the other foot, and you are the one with no attacking options isn't it you stupid little fat, crap goaty, twat.

I had a dream last night where we were playing Liverpool and after 20minutes Stevie G limped off with an injury and Torres got clattered by Lescott and limped and dived his way to the end of the game. I dreamt that the Liverpool fans disgraced themselves by throwing missiles onto the pitch. I had a very vivid dream of Lucas getting sent off and benitez face dropping in disgust. The dream got better when the TV conked out and when it came back we'd scored and the look on Sammyhead Lee and the Franco's head was glorious. I dreamt that Moyes came out and said we won with dignity and showed true grit.

Throughout the game Torres and the rest of the pansies dived their way through the game showing to all the neutrals that they are detestable shower of shites. I also dreamt that all the Moyes knockers on Toffeeweb would give him some credit for bringing on the young lads and change the game. I even dreamed that AVDM had a part in the goal. Weird but true, dreams dont get any better than this. Thanks Everton for making my month! Depression!... What depression?

Does the late introduction of AVDM into possibly the biggest game of our season represent him having served his time in Davey's bad books ? particularly with his space on the naughty step being hastily filled by young Victor....!!

I know his history splits opinions amoungst fans but surely, popular or unpopular, with 14 games to go, and a cup game vs Villa for which Pienaar will be suspended, the time has come to look for some return from the one member of our squad who offers something different to what we do..... he can go past a man, he can cross a ball and he does give the side genuine width when on the field - whether from he start or off the bench??

Give Stephen Stuart a break. David Moyes was amazingly bold but all Stephen is doing is trying to keep our feet on the ground. Quite often David Moyes does the right thing because he is forced into it. Still, it?s no time to be churlish. I've just called into the pub on the way home from work and the effort of our team has gave me the best hour (couple of hours) I?ve had in many a long day.

Incidentally, Dave Roberts has made a very pertinent point. Torres confirmed that he is a cheat and I believe that cheating is coached at Anfield.

LFC, no dignity, no grace, no class. Up to Roy Evans I respected them. When he was back stabbed they became a club without integrety.

Reina got his knickers in a twist as one of our boys picked up the ball and ran off with it to stop the rs kicking off. Not sure why he was so upset, they had been playing for penalties for previous hour, they can’t have been in that much of a hurry - anyone see him look round at the clock as he prepared for a goal kick with about 7 minutes to go. Anyway, who cares? They are all graceless tossers.

Best night ever in Goodison. I love Everton.

One of the interesting aspects of Everton?s performance last night related to the issue of how they played when up against 10 men. Especially in these later years of watching Everton (55 in total), I have rarely seen Everton comfortable in adapting their game to these circumstances, often resorting to long high balls up to the front players, thus handing an easy defensive task to any half-decent centre back etc.

Last night they did as they should, trying to pass the ball and make the 10 men run. Better late than never and better in these circumstances than any other!

As everyone has said here, there were so many good features but surely Jagielka and Lescott will never play better in their careers as they have done in these last few matches, Jagielka at the moment is only a few short steps away (more composure on the ball and better passing range) from becoming a defender of true world class status.

But I would call a bit of a halt on the AVDM "adulation" ? for the Lord?s sake he was on the pitch for a few minutes and put in one cross ? of course it led to the goal but I am equally convinced he did not "pick out Gosling with pin-point accuracy". This guy must have ability but let?s not go overboard quite so readily!

Equally, let?s not put too much expectation on the shoulders of the two youngsters but Rodwell in particular looks a tremendously composed young man. It does throw into stark relief the demeanour and recent contributions from Anichebe which, if there is any truth in the reports of his bust-up, must surely mean that he is shifted out as soon as possible. The last thing this apparently tightly knit spirit holding Everton together at the moment is Anichebe?s woeful attitude both on and off the pitch.

Good point Anthony.

When Chelsea were reduced to 10 men last year we played as if they still had the upper hand.

Last night was totally different; we played with real belief and even Moysey had the balls to send out a clear message to go and win the game especially when he brought Andy VDM on for Neville.

I still think we have a difficult end of season looming but for now let's settle for beating the cheaters, whingers and manipulators.

I don?t pray, but if i did I would pray for:
1. Stephen Stuart?s depression to be cured by a 5-0 win on Saturday.
2 Benitez to stay at Mordor for ever they?ll always be shite while he?s there. 3. Tic Tacs to be declared poisonous
4. Robbie Keane to come out and say how he?s pissing himself laughing and
5. The roadworks on the M60 to be finished.

Michael Mcguirk. Yes, Jo is cup-tied for the rest of the season. He cannot play for us in the FA Cup at all. Maybe that's a reason why Moyes may have tried to get a foreign striker as well as they would not have been cup-tied.

Annoyingly we're not going to be able to play it for a while but can I suggest a game to play for all football fans? This would work best in a ground with a big fan section behind the dugouts (i.e. not Goodison).

Whenever he is up on his feet he seems to have an automatic reaction whereby his hands are lifted up from his sides in a 'oh come on ref' kind of gesture.

I just thought (seeing as he seemed to do it almost every time the camera was on him last night) it'd be very funny to see all of the oppoisition fans copying him to point out quite how ridiculous he looks (and how often he does it).

Miserable sod!

Moyes: "At Everton we like to do things with class & dignity even when we win." That is a classic line to pull out if I ever heard one. Answer everything they (FSW) have thrown at us.

Does anyone else sense a strange, but high amount of confidence coming out of Everton these days? It's scary, but a lot of people on here put us down for a win too!
