Attacking the Gwladys street first half

Comments (22)

Why is it that almost every home game now we are attacking the Gwladys Street End in the first half?!

I might just not be paying enough attention at the toss up, so I suppose every other team could be winning the toss and forcing us to change around, but surely this isn't happening every time?

From memory, out of our home games this season we have attacked the Gwladys in the first half against: Liverpool (league), Fulham, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Hull, Arsenal, Liverpool (cup), and Bolton

That's 8 out of 15 in all competitions, i.e. more than half and all of the last 5 home games! Please don't tell me this is something that's going to continue ? I sit in the Lower Gwladys for two reasons: 1) the atmosphere and 2) because the blues attack us second half! Just like Liverpool at the Kop and United at the Stretford End we have ALWAYS attacked the Gwladys Street second half.

Like I say, I might just be missing the fact that teams are turning us around, but each of the last five times? Surely not!

It normally comes down to who wins the toss. If the opposition win it they often ask us to kick towards the Street End in the frist half ? knowing that we would prefer to do this in the second.

I personally have never believed it makes a difference, to Everton or any other team! Its all just personal preference or superstition.

Probably as the sun comes over the Park End in the first half and their 'keeper has the sun in his face.

As we were awful the first half of the season, maybe they're just doing it as a change, and as a few good results have came lately maybe that's why there doing it. Because if you've noticed most of those games it looks like we turned it around as the opposition usually get kick off.

To Dan - I do agree that it generally is not going to make much difference. But if that’s the case why not give the fans what they want? We attack the Park End first half, Gwladys Street second. Simple!

Me and the lads have been having this conversation the last few weeks as we sit in the Gwladys St... Although it?s obviously a tradition. I think the reason is that every game we?ve won at home so far this season, we?ve attacked the Park End 2nd half...

Obviously it also depends on who wins the toss but against Arsenal and Liverpool they both kicked off meaning we won the toss but chose to attack the Gwladys first half.

IMO its superstitious and the quicker they revert it back the better (for us who sit in the Gwladey anyway)!!

It can be to do with the weather, I think it should be the Gwladys St in the second half because of the fact that it holds 11,000 compared to 6,000. It would be interesting to know why?

I would be interesting to know what they the players think about attacking Ends with your home support behind it because they have decided to put the away fans behind the goal at Kirkby.

If the players prefer this then shouldn’t we looking to do that now?

I think Paul is spot on, Nev won the toss Vs Sunderland but decided to take advantage of the 1st half sun blinding the keeper...Mikel duly stuffed in a beauty of a free kick that the keeper struggled to move for due to the sun...I was in the lower Street End and the sun was certainly blinding for most of the first half. Nice work by Nev and Mikel!

I sit in Lower Street End too, and it's really starting to piss me off how this season we rarely win the toss, the majority of our famous victories happen when we face the Gwladys 2nd half as it provides such a surge for the players due to the noise created by it!

Guys, we have been winning the toss on occasions ? against Bolton at the weekend we won the toss, as we chose ends because Bolton got to kick off first.

I think this has all come down to superstition on Neville?s part.

Look at all the games we have now played attacking the Park End in the first half:

Sunderland 3-0
Hull 2-0
Arsenal 1-1
Liverpool 1-0
Bolton 3-0

It just seems to be since we?ve kicked to the Park End second half that we haven?t lost at Goodison! In fact all our home fixture victories this season came from attacking the Park End first.

So there you have it very superstitious...

I think your post says it all ?8 out of 15? as close to 50/50 as you can get with 15 games played. The odds of a coint toss ? you guessed it ? 50/50. As stated above, if we win, we shoot toward gwladys in 2nd half, if oppo win it the vice versa.

I can understand the choice of kicking into Gwladys St first half for those ridiculous early kick-offs (invented, bar the National, for policing and TV) as the wintry sun is right over the Park End rooftop; you spend all the 1st half shielding your eyes.

However, probably precisely because we?ve traditionally attacked the St End in the 2nd half, it doesn?t ?feel? the same t?other way round. However, I?m not that superstitious, touch wood.

I think it’s down to the fact that our opponents don’t have time to settle into the game if we attack the Street end first. I think you’ll find that we have won most of the toss-ups and Neville has chosen which end to attack first. I must admit I prefer us kicking into the Street end in the second half. But it doesn’t matter if we keep getting the results.

It's down to losing the toss!! I would've thought that was obvious as before each toss we always line up in the Gwaldys Street half! WE ONLY CHANGE WHEN LOSING THE TOSS!

Sorry, Steve Williams, (you imposter!),

but as the guys above pointed out we won the toss against Arsenal, Liverpool and Bolton and still kicked into the St. End first.

Just superstition, but who cares if we keep winning?

It used to be thought that the Gladdy was ’our’ end and where the noisiest, most fanatical support was, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the case anymore. The Park end is more accoustic than the Gladdy and if that has anything to do with it at all (which I doubt actually!) that could be the reason. Maybe it’s the Park end that sucks in the goals these days?

As a few of the lads have said it?s superstition.

Our home form hasn?t been the best this seaon, certainly in the first part of the season anyway. The games won whether due to us losing the toss or sun being a factor (Fulham & Sunderland) meant that we actually won the game. This is something they have continued with.

We haven?t won a game at home this season when attacking the Gwladdy 2nd half.

I thought I’d heard that a few seasons ago that the rules were changed to say if the home team lost the toss they had to swap ends whether the away team wanted them to or not...

or I might have imagined that.

A few years ago I thought having played a bit of footie and watched our team over along time, that I would learn the rules of the game... I learned and became a qualified ref.

The rules are simple, and can be quantified as "losers kick" so, if we win the toss, we choose which way we kick.

I know this is a forum with people expressing opinions and much of the time moaning, but it really would help if in expressing opinions, contributors got the basic facts right, of course, the danger is that, otherwise those contributors could be classed as gobshites and we would not want that as a charge against fellow blues would we?

How come after 100+ years at Goodison Park it’s come down to Philip of Neville to realise we should be taking advantage of the blinding sun and attack the street end first half??? Think of the games and championships we could’ve won had we realised earlier! Or has the sun only risen from the park end in recents seasons? Can someone confirm with Mystic Meg?
