Afraid of us

I managed to catch the Everton ? Villa match on cable television here in Malaysia. Absolutely delighted that we got the win, an pretty convincingly too I must say. My observations from the match:

Arteta definitely is the heart beat of our team. He just knows what to do with the ball, when to switch play, when to run, or when to play it safe with a back pass. And he can tackle too! Superb...

Anichebe just doesn't have enough as a striker. Yes, he's strong and is reasonably quick ? the way he won the penalty by bulldozing his way through the Villa defence is evidence of that. Yet, there were too many times for my liking when he lost the ball easily or shot inaccurately. But then, he was involved in the third goal as well, which was crucial to us. So what are we to make of him? A liability in the long run? Only able to produce something once in a while? He seems to have that important foundation of strength and some pace... but mentally I think he's still Reserves quality...

Gosling to me is still learning. The positives for me are his willingness and bravery in getting shots on goal. He was played on left-wing during the Villa match, but I really don't think that is his position. He doesn't have the pace or build to be able to get past the defender. There were probably 2-3 times when he tried to push the ball past the defender, who just got in the way slightly and the ball was lost. I see him as being a replacement for Cahill as a goal-getting midfielder, even though their abilities are quite different. Could this be a sign of Moyes's intentions in changing the team's playing style in the future?

Rodwell. If this guy was was playing for any of the Sky4, his face would be plastered all over the media by now. He is frighteningly good! Cool temperament, accurate passing, skillful with the ball at his feet... this boy is going to be a star! It's hard to believe he's only 17!!!

As a team, I also believe that we've developed a crucial element that is needed to compete. That is: OTHER TEAMS REALLY DO FEAR US! From what I see and read about Villa, I expected them to do better on Sunday. In Ashley Young and Agbonlahor, they have two really fast and good forwards. And when they got the equalizing penalty using that pace, I thought they had the upper hand mentally and would go on to press us with their pace. But that didn't happen.

Even in the second half when we relaxed a little, I didn't see too much threat in their much-feared and talked-about pace. For example, there were times when Young had the ball on the wing and I was always expecting him to try and take it past Hibbert, but instead he always chose to cross it from deep, which doesn't seem to be his natural play.

And Petrov seemed to pass the ball backwards more often rather than take the ball forward or try to shoot. To be honest, while I have no doubt we played well, I think the other crucial factor was that Villa were afraid of us and didn't play to their own game.

It's clear that many other teams and managers are envious of us for the way we've come so far on so a limited budget, but looking at our recent match with Villa, I do believe that adding to this acknowledgement of us as a good team is the growing mentality that Everton are indeed a team that others are afraid to play....

Well done, boys!!!

Marcus, I?m guessing you get the same coverage and pundits as I do in Singapore.

At the end of the round-up of all the goals, Paul Masefield reckoned that our name?s on the Cup ? this despite Arsenal, Chelsea & Utd still being involved.

Great to see some pundits over here finally recognising just how far we have come in terms of ability to challenge the usual suspects for silverware.

Only taken about 6 years, but they may finally be clicking that we?re not some flash-in-the-pan club and fully deserve where we are and how we?ve been playing (particularly over the last 2/3 months) on merit.

Marcus, what was really obvious and gratifying was the team?s reaction to the Villa penalty ? a pat on the shoulder for Hibbert and then the players just picked up where they left off. No moaning, no heads dropping, just shrugged it off and got on with it.

Their body language and the way they ?chat? to each other throughout the game ? sometimes grimly determined and, at others, smiling away. They seem more like a gang of mates who enjoy playing together and have confidence in each other?s ability and effort ? brilliant to see in this day and age.

Phil Bellis,

I agree entirely. The spirit adds up to the value of an extra man sometimes. There was a short period in the second half against Villa when we were under the cosh a bit and we went very deep (for about 10 minutes?). Because we never leave anybody up the clearances were coming right back to us. (Why do we do that?)

Neville just quietly went around all the defenders gesticulating and pointing to the touchlines. Then what do you know... the clearances then went out of play for the most part and gave us time to regroup. Well done Pip and well done Blues for sorting it out together!

An idiotic, dilluisional Villa fan posted this on the F365 website.

"Everton: the new, old, Bolton! I am in no way being bitter here about yesterday's defeat to Everton. We have been on an unbelievable domestic un-beaten run that stretches back to November. I knew the run had to end and I'd have preferred it against Everton in the FA Cup than CSK or Chelsea next week.

"Anyway, I've come accustomed to watching a Villa side to try to play a game with pace and flair. It was actually impossible to play like that against Everton. They are now very similar to when Fat Sam had Bolton playing the hoof and run game in Bolton seasons when they were doing well. I'd say being an Everton midfielder is like being the net in a game of tennis. How on earth could Arteta be happy there?

"When the full backs get the ball it's hoofed to the centre forward. This is even the same with the centre backs. The ball is just launched and then muscle your way to goal! Now Villa do use the ball over the top sometimes but not as much as you would think. Even with arguably the quickest center forward in the league and in Carew/Heskey, good target men, we still try to get it down and play nice football.

"Fair play to Moyes for playing with what he has but it is just horrible, utterly horrible, to sit down and look at Everton."

What a load of bullshit!! He may have had a case in the first 3 months of our season but this is clearly bitter towards our dominance over them yesterday. Arteta pulled all the strings yesterday receiving MOTM plaudits from all angles and Rodwell has been given numerous media and Toffeeweb mentions both from midfield.

These lucky Villa idiots would appear to be thinking their a better team than they actually are. My personal genuine opinion: we are much better than them and will take over them in the league before the season's out.

I don?t think we?ll catch Villa domestically. Possibly Arsenal, but not Villa. They were below standard on Sunday and we took advantage. I don?t think that constitutes us being better, or Villa being lucky. But we won. Simple as that.

Look at it this way. The way the manager and fans of Villians are ticking us off meant they are really afraid we could overtake them in the league. They are less fearful of Arsenal and Chelsea. We can nail them at the finish if we put in a great effort for the remaining 13 matches.

Early in 2005, I think it was Arteta’s 2nd game we went to Villa and played them off the park. Not only 1-2’s but 5-6’s.

There was an element of well, they were a bit piss poor. The only stand out for me was that JLloyd bloke at fullback. But then as now, you can only beat what is put in front of you.

It just goes to show that you CAN’T fool all of the people all of the time, over time a run of luck will run against you, usually when you need it and on Sunday Villa needed it

I was a bit worried the number of times in the 2nd half that they had the ball on or around the edge of the box and managed to fuck up, two shots went out for throws I think.

The Cup might have been their minor target but as I said luck changes, plus the injuries. Who knows we might even turn out to be been their Fiorentina.

I honestly believe (and hope) that Villa will slide because they have yet to play all the top teams and on sunday, looked every bit of a team begining to believe their own hype! Agbonlahor and Ashley Young were acting like a couple of little bitches all game cos they werent gettin their own way. Agbonlahor is hugely overated, yes he’s fast, but he couldnt finish his dinner. Young is better, but how many opportunitys did he have to put a decent ball in? Lots, and stuck 1 decent cross in, which Agbonlahor missed from 2 yards out! I also dont know what game O’Neil was watching??
