Come back Manuel Fernandes

Comments (27)

Just wondered if anyone else feels the same way as me about the following story - http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2009/02/18/manuel-fernandes-keen-on-summer-move-to-portsmouth-115875-21132711/

That simple feeling is; I don't want to see him playing for another Premier League team (especially at £6m!). I was gutted we couldn't get him in after the first loan spell and surprised we didn't get him permanently after the second loan. (Incidentally, I'd see him as an immediate replacement for Osman).

Personally I would love him to come back. I was at the Newcastle game which turned out to be his last game for us and he was awesome!!! Some might say he took to long to settle in but when he did he was well worth the £6M price tag!!

Only question is: does Moyes still have his heart set on Moutinho, as the press keep reporting???

Whilst I would be quite gutted if he came back to the Prem for 6m and not to us, I am not yet feeling the frustration given that this clued-up article starts off by calling him "Everton midfielder Fernandez", and further that it is a story in the Mirror (which probably explains ,y first point).

I very much wanted Manny to stay after his 2nd loan spell, however, I wonder if EFC has moved on now and I?m not sure he will fit into the team with the current personnel. Incidentally, I dont see him as a replacement for Ossie, he is more of a link man between defence and midfield. Not a holding midfielder, not an attacking midfielder and certainly not a winger (which is our priority)

£6m would be a good buy but with Fellaini and Arteta playing so well would it be a luxury too far? Plus iI doubt there is any truth in it anyway as appears in The Mirror.

I always thought Manny was an excellent player with bags more potential. However, I see the stories about him coming back to the Premier League especially now as unlikely. I have kept an eye on his progress in Spain where he is doing very well and established himself as a first-teamer at a very good Valencia side. For Valencia to let him go now and so cheap is unlikely and pure media speculation.

Everton have also moved on now and we have Arteta playing the defensive playmaker. As long as we have Arteta I don?t see Manny coming back as we have more urgent needs than cover for Arteta.

We have Rodwell and Neville competing for the defensive midfielder and Cahill and Fellaini competing for the attacking midfielder. Arteta is the playmaker, Pienaar left-winger. We urgently need a right-winger with Osman good enough cover. The defence looks pretty solid.

If we had £6m to spend (which we don?t), I?d like to see Moyes make a move for a really top all-round striker who can get us 20 goals a season. Yakubu is a poacher who will score goals but I?m realising we are better off with Cahill?s work ethic for the team up front. Saha and Vaughan are too injury prone to rely on, anything we get from them is a bonus.

In summary, I?d love to see Manny back at Goodison but I think we have other priorities right now.

I agree Matt, as much as I would love for us to sign him, I can’t help but think we would be wasting the money as we clearly have more important positions to fill. Firstly, Right Midfield!

For me, he is trouble with a capital Fuck off....he did good in his first stint, wasn’t great second time round, (injuries aside)...and he fucked us off from what i recall when a ’bigger club’ came sniffing around, i think we’d be signing a whole heap of trouble. I think it would disrupt a harmonious dressing room....so no ta....I think we are ok in the centre of the park anyway. If we are gonna sign someone, it’s gotta be a winger, followed by another winger!

Another winger (at a realistic price) would be Eljero Elia from FC Twente. Thought he looked very good when they played in the Uefa Cup, and though he wouldn’t be the usual Everton player of industry, has got the flair and pace that we need to open up teams and alter our style when neccessary. Hopefully Bjarni Vidarrson who is there now is bigging us up to him!

Hi, first time on here, did anyone see the two Swansea lads in the cup tie against Fulham, Dyer and Gower, both looked v.good (although was only one viewing). Dyer in particular looked unbelievably quick and at 19 would be a good long term prospect. Also Gomez looked good for them as well.

Forget Manny.
I hope the rumours are true that Moyes is working to bring Moutinho to Everton as we speak.
João Moutinho
Birth Date: September 8, 1986 - aged 22
Height 5’ 7" (1.70m)
Weight 10.1 st (64 kg)
Played in first team since he was 17. Sporting Lisbons second youngest captain in their history aged 20.
He can play anywhere across the midfield but has been used mainly just behind the front 2. However, he has moved to right midfield recently and is still proving to be a true quality player.
Wears Ronaldo’s old jersey number 28 and is reckoned to be the next superstar produced by Portugal.
A natural replacement for Ossie (plus others in midfield if necessary), with bags of skill, killer passes and an eye for goal. The new Ticky Trev ?
Some may question his height/weight but he is extremely combative and very, very rarely misses games through injury.
He is also known to have a mature, professonal and winning attitude for his age and would fit right in with our current team spirit.
If you get a chance watch him play for Sporting via the internet I am sure you will be very impressed.
Gutted we did not get him last year so fingers crossed it is being sorted.
Definitely a player that could light up the Premiership and take EFC onto the next level.

I don’t agree with the argument personally on here that we will have too many luxury players.

Fernandes definitely started to work harder during both his spells once he settled in and Moyes had drilled in the work ethic again. True, he will never work as hard as Neville or Cahill, but his vision and creativity will win us games. Look at the Derby County match- it was his genius that let Osman score.

Has no one considered what will happen if Arteta gets injured? We have a tiny squad and there is no player there that can cover for him effectively. I for one would rest assured knowing that if Arteta got injured, or was feeling a niggle, that we had an alternative in Fernandes! It would mean Arteta wouldn’t play through the pain barrier and would give him more competition for his place.

At £6million it would be a shame if he pulled on anything other than the Royal Blue Jersey next season in the Premiership.

Can’t believe the gullability of my blue bretheren.

Established star in La Liga, playing well almost every week - £6m, in the Mirror!

You’ve got to be joking!

Almost as much as Matthew Lovekin who clearly believes that £6m will get you "a really top all-round striker who can get us 20 goals a season".

Hahahaha!

I liked Fernandez too, but the main priority now has to be a wide player. Like Carl Davies I’d love to see Dalmat at Goodison.

Quite simply if the price really is £6m then the answer is it's a complete no brainer.

Why does it say he's an Everton player? And it doesnt say Portsmouth will get him for £6m either.

I would rather have Rodwell and the big fella. I didn't rate him, thought he was a show pony who wanted too much time on the ball, always flattered to decieve, quite injury-prone, lacked energy, gave the ball away too often in dangerous areas, and I didn't like his attitude.

I agree with you Steve, where can I get a £6m striker who bags 20 a season? Up me arse maybe?

IMO there were a few times that Fernandes was the best player we had (that pass to Ossie to beat Derby 1-0) no one else could make that pass on our team!

Beyond that, Moyes always had a liking to him saying "he needs to be treated with love..." and Moyes relishes a project.

However, it doesn?t seem like he is a project anymore getting good run in a big team. £6m pounds almost gets you Faddy, how the fuck are we gonna get Fernandes for that?

btw- how are Valencia?s funds right now??? They were having a lot of trouble recently? That could be our only hope.

I feel we need to raise the funds for three new players in the summer, firstly i?d say do all we can to keep Jo if he delivers say £9-10m.

Then i?d go for a top right back, if we could get Glen Johnson that?d be awesome, then Baines would have a wing partner in crime.

Then if Manny is still available and we somehow had the cash I?d do all possible to sign him or better still get him on loan for the season. He has different attributes to Fellaini and Arteta/Baines apart we have no-one else who can take top quality free kicks.

Personally I?d feel sick watching manny play for another prem club.

Let's not forget Valencia are heavily in debt with a new 70,000 stadium to pay for, if they have an unhappy player then £6m may be a fair price.

If I was going to sell one player who?d raise in excess of £5m it?d be Osman, I think he has found his level (top 10 Premier League) and we need players in his position who can make an impact against the big teams.

Sorry Ric, didn?t see that you had already mentioned the Derby County pass. Beyond that, his free kicks were thunderous if not a little erratic. But his passes.... he passed with a crispness, a heaviness (in a good way) that not even Arteta posseses. If we can get him for £6M, god damnit take it. I just don?t see it happening for that cheap.

I would rather have Fernandes over Moutinho anyday.

But with Fellaini, Cahill, Arteta, Rodwell, Pienaar, Osman, all central midfield if played in their favoured position what is the point! AvdM is the only natural winger... enough said about that. Strengthen there!

There was an article on Soccernet about Valencia being unable to pay players wages for the last few weeks. It was expected to be sorted out but it must be a sure sign that they are in financial difficulty. Why he would want to move to Pompey when they are sliding into the shit and half their squad wants to leave puzzles me.

Anyway, I personally think he is excellent and although we are doing well in the middle atm and need to cover other positions, there is no backup for Arteta. If he gets injured, I reckon our performances will drop off badly.

£9-10 mill for Jo!! If he plays as well as he looks he could do, there is only one way his value will go from what was paid for him. That's not going to be down!

I think Fernandes was over-hyped, yes there were occasions of brilliance but there were also times when he gave the ball away cheaply and left us hugely exposed and on the back foot, had a tendency to blow hot and cold. Fully agree with others who have thrown Dalmat’s name into the ring this guy has pace to burn. In my view a much more welcome addition and would cover a key position that needs strengthening.

Even though I thought he was potentially a superstar far too much water has gone under the bridge and we need pace.

And if it was ’reported’ in the Mirror is it bound to be nothing other than utter horse shit.

Fernandes is exactly the player we need. He is a holding midfielder who can also playmake. He dominated the midfield when they played Real Madrid before Christmas. He is available as Valencia can?t even pay their players at the moment. Fernandes and Arteta should be playing alongside each other in the middle.

Moyes never really used him properly, he seemed to think that as he was skilful and foreign he had to support the striker or play wide. ?Manalele? as he was dubbed whilst breaking through is exactly what we need, along with a winger (either wing would do me, as Pienaar could play the other, whichever it was).

I really liked Fernandes?s style of play. Flair and tough at the same time... If we are going to beef up our squad, Moyes would be mad not to take him for £6 million.

If we are going to break the top 4, we need to have the strength and depth, which is the thing that has let us down in the past. Fernandes and Jo in the summer, would be £15 million well spent.

Valencia are in serious trouble at the moment. As one of the previous posters mentioned, the players haven?t been paid since the start of the year, and they need to make a payment to the building company of their new stadium or they down tools.

They need ?100 million I think between the two parties that need paid (players and builders)..

Obviously their cash cow is David Villa. Barca probably being his destination in the summer, which will give them a good wedge of the money that they need. Selling players like Fernandes just to get a few bucks and get the wage bill down is quite realistic. Any offer that comes in they will certainly entertain.
