Is Moyes finally looking up?

Comments (9)

"Nothing's won and nothing's lost so we need to hang in there and try and get into the top four."

On the official site this afternoon, David Moyes (talking of THAT injury) is quoted saying the above. I know we're nearer Arsenal than we are Wigan, points-wise, but this statement is as positive as I've ever heard from our manager.

It always used to be "... let's get to 40 points first and anything on top of that is a bonus..." if Moyes is finally looking up — and publicly stating he wants to break into the Champions League places seems to suggest this — I see this as a bit of a first for him and would welcome this type of positivity more often.

Yes Andy - count me in.

He looked visibly shaken after the game last week. Mikel gone, Victor assaulted and Jack Rodwell’s (1st minute?) attempted GBH clearly on his mind. But give him a few days and he has the Big Fella back from injury, Tim and Hibbo too, plus maybe Steven and Leon.

Jo for sure, Tim in support, back 4 surely restored (Yobo on the bench can’t be bad), so who in midfield?

Moyes knows more about WBA than I do so I’ll leave it to him.

Very welcome & will hopefully transmit to where it matters most, the players.

When DM joined Everton he made all the right positive noises, one of which was the desire to win every game, or at least try. That survived for a little while, but faded away. But that philosophy is the bedrock that we can use to build our assault on the Sky 4.

We have an excellent young, strong & talented squad. We also have an incredibly harmonious squad & club by any standards, from top to bottom. If Moyes really has re-discovered that confidence and desire then I can’t wait.

You’re right Keith, he did look shaken after last week, and rightly so to be fair. I presume Newcastle’s match day sponsor was JCB as that’s what many of the players resembled. Nolan’s was simply the most shocking of several shocking performances. Hut truth is, even without Arteta & Anichebe, they were so bad that we lost 2 points which would have put us on Arsenal’s shoulder & getting close enough to Villa for their discomfort. We lost shape & purpose and that was the most disappointing to me, and I expect to Moyes.

We have nothing whatsoever to lose for the next 3 months so we may as well turn up every week and go for it. The signs have been there for a little while now. And despite losing the main man, as Keith points out we have many returning & so cause for optimism.

A couple of decent spankings to up the goal difference would be just what the doctor ordered to get us back on message.

Speaking of spankings we have scored three in our last two home games and will get the treble tommorrow. 3-0 for me with Cahill, Osman and Jo scoring.

Moyes has always been ambitious, his job is to motivate his players correctly. Sometimes things need playing down to take pressure off.

His comments this week suggest the squad are feeling a little bit sorry for themselves. The danger is they will look to each other for leadership, Moyes talking about 4th. would seem to be aimed at focusing the players on what is expected of them and applying a bit of pressure on certain players to ’step up to the plate’ so to speak.

Nice to hear a bit of ambition from our leader.
Dispite the disturbing eagerness of some of our fans to settle for second best, given any sort of luck the squad Moyes is assembling is capable of champions league qualification.
Even if we do have to wait another season

With the loss of Arteta, finishing 6th is going to be a great achievement, and with that hopfully a place in the new Europa League. But finishing 6th might not be good enough to get us in Europe. As far as I am aware we have 3 places in the Europa League, qualification by the following means:
  1. League Cup Winners
  2. FA Cup Winners/Runners Up
  3. 5th Place in the league.
  4. /ol> Now if Man Utd win the League Cup, that place drops to 6th place in the league, and if the Top 3 as well as ourselves progress to the FA Cup semi-finals then a place could go down to 7th. All looking good so far.

But what if (a) Spurs win the League Cup?? ... or (b) Man City win the Uefa Cup??? That would mean only one place left. If that is the case, and let us assume we get beat in the FA Cup final, do we qualify for the last place in the Europa Cup at the expence on say Arsenal finishing in 5th place in the League? Now you know were I am coming from here, Will the rules get changed,... not changed but bent a little for the errant member of the Sky4?

A long shot I know, but being an Evertonian........you just never know.

I've recently been reading various Everton fan sites and noticed (doesn't take much) that many people believe that now one player is out, influential he may be, that we will faulter and just about manage to finish sixth. This while our players are confident and raring to go even without Arteta and believe they can win every game and while not getting carried away being quietly confident they can win a trophy.

My point is that we as fans need to have the same winning mentality or big club mentality that we can beat anyone if our big club is to resume it's rightful place as regular finishers in The top flights top 5 and challenging for trophies regularly. If everyone has a winning mentality than that makes us noticed by more people and than most clubs will fear us which will help us get more and more of the right results which will get us investment (hopefully) and so the cycle starts. Let's make a start with West Brom tomorrow.... COYB

With all the discussion over weakened teams in the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup over the last couple of weeks. How about the winners on the EPL, FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa cup go into the Champions League as then it will only be champions? Also with this format all teams will want to win every competition, no more weakened team. ps: This is my first contribution so take it easy on me. COYB
