The future is blue

Comments (30)

It has been reported that Femi Orenuga, a 15-year-old winger (who has already turned out as a substitute for Southend in the cup last November) signed on scholarship terms for Everton yesterday.

What is so warming for me is the fact that he opted to join Everton despite a whole host of clubs offering him a place, quote "when I went to Everton, I saw how many youth players had gone on into the first team and I think I will have a better chance with them than some of the other sides who were interested"

Femi lad, keep your boots close by you ? going on current injury rates, you may find yourself in the team a lot quicker than you think!

Welcome to the blue family....

So we have signed a winger!!! The OS has confirmed the signing of Femi Orenuga. He is 15yo and came from Southend United.

By the sounds of it, he is eligiable to play for us too! Could this guy be the answer? Has anyone seen him play?

After a year or so why not? James Milner was only 16 when he started and took away the Fat Lad’s record for being the youngest premiership scorer.

A friend of mine is one of his teachers down south. She told me this a few weeks ago, been waiting for it to come onto the OS. He said no to Man U and choose us instead as we offered him a two year academy scholarship and a professional contract after that, whereas the Manc just offered him the academy.

He’s supposed to be very good. Lets just hope we see something from him in a year or two.

How quickly Gosling is cast aside for a new young hero! Anyone got any quick swimmers we can put in the team?

We’ve also got a 15/16 year old DC called Aristote Nsiala from DR Congo, joined not long ago, all courtesy of our personal scouting tool ;)

Been on every Southend website all day. They seem to think highly of him.

With Michel Platini and Sep Blatter looking to implement the 6/5 rule in a few years, it seems wise to invest in an academy of top English youngsters. Further it is another statement of intent from Moyes and his 5 year plan.

Regardless of the division he broke into the first team at 15! So (hopefully) if his pace and technical ability is there, the rest will come at our academy!

No offence Craig but Moyes is buying youth who he potentially hopes will break into a top 4 side. Spencer was never targeted for that level of ambition.

If he fails we lose a small fee as his success will pave the way for future payments. But if he turns out to be another Aaron Lennon or Ashley Young?

Sensibly only time and a lot of hard work will tell. So far in his short career he has ticked all the right boxes, trained with the world champions and caught the eye both here and in Sweden. Moyes is no fool and all he need show right now is pace, commitment and technical ability.

Gerry - nice news for the kid, but first I’ve heard of him. Things aren’t that bad are they, that it takes a quote from a 15-year-old to get one excited about this club’s future.

If this 5/6 rule comes in young players like this will be priceless according to the mail [ i know there shite ] we have fielded 9 qualifying players this season whilst the RS have only fielded 2.
It would be great if we could field a young talented team packed full of english players with only 1 spaniard 1 Aussie and a yank.

Alan Kirwin - the point of my comment was to say that it was so pleasing (and different) to hear that Femi had chosen to join Everton above every other team that wanted him. I admire a kid of that age deciding himself what he wants to do - and not be swayed by the "meeja" that he should go to one of the "Sky 4" who they deem to be the only clubs who should develop up and coming talent!
No, things aren’t that bad - just thought it would be interesting to hear other Blues thoughts on how Everton are now managing to snap up talented youngsters ahead of the opposition and if they felt things are looking up.

Am I excited about the kid. Not really. Not really heard of him and don’t know if he is good bad or indifferent.

But I am excited that he looks at Gosling, Rodwell, Anichebe, Vaughan, Rooney (yes Fat boy), and says here is a club where there is a good record of developing good young talent and giving them a place in the team if they are good enough.

It the possibility that we can become the english speaking equivalent of Arsenal. Know for great youngster, but at least ours all speak english (and maybe score goals!)

That is what is so exciting about this. We are a club to come to - especially if you are young and talented.

Haha, good shout Nick, he's probably about 25. No wonder he's so sensible at such a ?young age?.

Well let's not get too excited, I remember a 14- or 15-year-old American lad who was hyped to be the next big thing, turned out he was a bit overated. Can't think of his name now but think he's playing in Greece or somewhere like that.

We currently seem to occupy a niche that makes us attractive to young English/UK talent: a big club that has developed a succession of youth that actually have a chance to get on the field. Aston Villa are similar. It is pretty much a closed shop at the Sky 4 at the moment.

I don’t know if the 6/5 rule will work to Everton’s benefit in the long run. It may be better for us for the Sky 4 to continue their essential de-emphasis of their youth system with regards to British talent. An enforced "Home Rule" may make it more difficult for us to attract the best young talent. Any thoughts?

I remember John Oster choosing us ahead of Man Utd et al. Let?s not get too excited eh!

It?s a good policy in my mind, bringing in some of the brightest young talent for a nominal fee. If just one in ten were to make it as a top Premier League player then he would have easily paid for the nine shite ones!
