We shall not be moved

Comments (26)

Boro on Sunday is a massive game for us and if we beat them we're going to Wembley...

Evertonians have a great affection with Wembley and, as we all know, one of our cup songs is We Shall Not Be Moved... I'm slightly distressed that the younger generation who sing this never include the start of it, so I just thought I'd post the official words and see if we can belt it out on Sunday, and then hopefully in the pubs and bars of London town...

Onwards Evertonians,
Onwards For To See,
To See The Old Twin Towers And Sing For Wembley,
See The Royal Blue Jerseys,
As Graceful As Can Be,
Forging Onto Victory, And Fighting Constantly.

Onwards Evertonians,
Don't Let Your Pride Be Moved........
Remember Our Song For Wembley is:
We Shall Not Be Moved!!!!

Genius Ray. I would love to think I’m one of the ’younger generation’, (but more ’active elderly’) - and the significant (long) period I wasn’t able to follow the blues, was maybe when this was sung - otherwise never heard it in my life - soz - but will have the words in large print ready to belt out on sunday with everyone else ... Come ed lads!!!

Been watching the Blues for over 50 years, never seen or heard these words in my life.... They don?t fit with the ?We shall not be moved? tune... so what is it?

I was hoping someone would explain that these words are obviously to a different tune ? the hymn, Onward Christian Soldiers, which we were forced to sing with gusto at school assemblies. It was sung by Evertonians as a precusor or couplet if you like to their more recognisable version of the popular 60s remake of an old gospel song by The Seekers that was indeed to an entirely different tune.

John, you must have been asleep or bevied.

Michael is spot on: the words were made up later on as a precursor to We Shall Not Be Moved ? both different tunes but connected by the lead-in from "Onwards Evertonians......".

I always preferred "The Banks of the Royal Blue Mersey" myself but, there again, what could beat "hanging Kopites one by one"???

It?s a shame the younger lads are not a bit more inventive as we seem to have lost our initiative in bringing out new songs.

"If you know your history" is a bit too luvvie for me and is also a bit dated (no comments please).

By the way Steve, well done for starting a topic that?s not to do with team selection for Saturday, whether Moyes will make it as Utd manager, and whichever one-legged player is crap this week!!

I think the game against Middlesboro will be tough. they tend to knock it around a bit, rather than just hoof it toward the defenders, which we can cope well with. Not forgetting West Brom at the weekend , though we did win, it surely hasn’t escaped people that for the large part they played a lot better than we did? I think a team with a bit more nouse, might make it a lot more difficult, for us your man Tuncay is bang in form, as is Downing. it will be a hard nut to crack, especially with so many injured. I hope the patchwork quilt Moyes puts out is enough to get us through the time and into the draw for the next round.....fingers crossed eh??

"To See The Old Twin Towers And Sing For Wembley"

They?ve done a fair bit of redecorating since last we were at Wembley... may not recognize the place.

Good Lord Jay, I remember the Banks of the Royal Blue Mersey and fainlty too hanging kopites one by one lol

You know, perhaps there never really was such a thing as friendly rivalry lol.. it never was very friendly in mine,

Mum and Dad kopites, brother a blue, and rest of the family evenly split.

I just happened to be taken the match by my Uncle Jimmy who, thank god, incurred the wrath of my parents by bringing me home with a blue and white scarf and a wooden rattle (remember them? offensive weapons now..lol)

Slightly off tangent here but does anybody know the dates for the semi w/e?

Although not counting chickens an all that, I need to look at time off work and flights.

I had those words on the back of a crackin? tee-shirt I bought in the Spellow in the run-up week to the 95 Cup Final.
I wore it for the Final but unfortunately chucked it out last year when moving house. Wish I?d kept it now ? even if it started to look like a nightie!

I think Freddie Armstrong (Gwladys St legend) wrote the preamble and the line:
To See The Old Twin Towers And Sing For Wembley
was, I think
To See The Old Twin Towers, Our Team at Wemb-er-ley

but well-remembered Steve

How?s about the other golden oldie from 66?

It?s a long way to Wembley stadium
It?s a long way to go (optional ?without yer kecks on!)
It?s a long way to Wembley stadium
To the greatest team we know
Goodbye Upper Parly
Farewell Clayton Square
It?s a long, long way to Wembley Stadium
But Everton will be there!

On the subject of blasts from the past and preambles, before colour tele the following used to precede Oh! we hate Bill Shankly:

We?re the lads from Goodison that you all know
We?re the boys from the banks of the Mersey
And we sing this song
As we go along
For the boys in the Royal Blue Jersey
Oh! we...

Won?t be able to sing that in future if BK has his way... can?t rhyme jersey with Alt

Christine,
I still had my wooden one (rattle that is) until I moved house in the 90’s.

It was from the 60’s.Quite a few of us had them in the "boy’s pen" (I guess it would now be called "the young person’s pen)and what a noise they made.

Football hooliganism hadnt been invented then either.

I would like to thank Steve Murray for bringing back to me some greatt memories. Regarding the song you quoted Steve, I wrote that song in 1966 for a competition in the echo (I didn't win) just before the cup final, it was for a couple of tickets. I still have the original typed sheet somewhere, I got quite a few copies made and I and friends handed them out at Wembley before the game. The words are:
Onward Evertonians, Onward for to see
Beneath the Royal twin towers, our team at Wembley
See the royal blue jerseys as graceful as can be
Forging ahead for victory and fighting constantly
Onward Evertonians, don't let your brows be grooved
remember our song for Wembley
WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED!!
Then we obviously would start singing We shall not be moved. Does anybody remember this shout we had at the time: "Everton for the Cup, Wednesday for the middle of the week!" Also, "What's our name? EVERTON!" ? Mohamed Ali was here at the time.

My ticket cost me £5 for a ten bob ticket, and it was well worth it! My eldest lad was born exactly 3 weeks to the day, after the final. His name? Derek Temple Trebilcock, and his birth certificate is signed by all of the Everton team that played that day, all except Brian Harris, somehow I missed him and he was transfered to Cardiff City not long afterwards.

Thanks once again, Steve.

Colin... it was you! You may not have won but I learnt your song in 66 and it?s been sung wherever Blues meet up from Vina del Mar to Yokahama. It?s been sung in kitchens at parties by a generation.

I met Cassius Clay (as he was then) before the Fulham game when Bally made his debut and I remember the "What's Our Name" chant breaking out at the ?67 Cup game at Goodison.

?The banks of the Royal Blue Mersey? is still sung most games.
At the away games before kick off, while having a beer, (when you can get one), a rendition of ?Oh Everton -oh- we love Everton -oh- Everton-oh-we love Everton. And we love our Tricky Trev (Tricky Trev), Peter Reid (Peter Reid),...............? (Alueta tune), everytime.
Brilliant.

We?re going to Wembley Twice

Phil Bellis,
I can?t thank you enough for your reply. I thought maybe people may have forgotten by now. I?m 70 now and it brought a tear to my eye, to think people are singing it in such far flung places. Cheers, my Friend!

I don't actually know many of these songs, being only 14 like, but having read all the replies on this thread, you kinda realise what a special team and what special supporters Everton have.

Colin, to an older Evertonian from a younger Evertonian, I shall be singing your great song on Saturday with everything I've got mate. A boss song written by a boss Evertonian.

COYB ? It?s gunna be our year.

What about:

"You are my Everton, my only Everton,
You make me happy when skies are grey,
You'll never know just how much I love you,
So please don't take my Everton away,
Nah, Nah Nah, Nah Nah... and so on.

And this: "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
If Lyons doesn't get ya, Pejic must." Classics eh.

Me mate Stevie made one up in the pub in Jersey last year for Manny Fernandes to Abba's tune Fernando:

"There was something in the air that night, the ball took flight, from Fernandes;
and when the ball hit the net, I won my bet with Fernandes....."
Belter!
Remember this one, chaps:

"We are the team, we are supreme,
The finest team we've ever seen,
A team that plays the Everton way,
And wins the league the end of May."?

About 20 of us sing these all every week in the Boot & Ball pub (Jersey) ? like being at home ? come and join us next time your here. 10 thousand Evertonians live in Jersey. Best supported club on the island. Our favourite tho is:

"I've never felt like singing the blues,
When Everton win and Liverpool lose
ooh Everton, you got me singing the blues.
And I've never felt more like laughin' all night,
?cos Everton's great and Liverpool's shite,
Ooh Everton, you got me singin' the blues."

By the way, Peter Howard, I lost my tee shirt from 95 as well with Onward Evertonians on the back. Dogs of war team, brilliant it was. Every team we played had an animal in their emblem: Bristol City (robbins); Norwich (canary); Newcastle (magpie); Tottingham (cockerl). In the middle was our Everton staff bull terrier and in his mouth was a red devil. Pure class that was. We had to beat the Mancs wearing that, mate. And it pisses me off just remembering I lost it, I should have framed it.

Can anyone see anything significant about this Cup run we're on? I hope a top tee-shirt comes out for this year eh; and some new songs too. And I'd give a hundred quid for anyone who can replace that 95 tee-shirt for me. You can email me: colin.riley38@yahoo.co.uk.

Keep singin' blues and remember the last time we played Borough; replay after replay. We beat them, Trevor Steven header, last minute of extra time. We had ten thousand with us, classic match that was.

"Make some noise for the Everton boys;
We got Mikel Arteta and our ginger Davie Moyes,
King Louis and Anichebe, although he's just a pup,
He won't come back from Wembley without the FA Cup."

I just made that up. Hope someone can put it to a tune cos I can't cos it's 1 in the mornin and I'm cabbaged. Good luck. goin to bed now me fingers are hurtin, see ya at Wembley.
