Over Confidence

Comments (13)

I am really hoping that Everton don't take Middlesboro too lightly this weekend just because it is at Goodison. I only remember too well the shameful home FA Cup defeats against Tranmere, Blackburn and Oldham last year. Moyes should play back those matches as a reminder of how it can go horribly wrong.

Having said that, I hope a similar performance like the one against Villa takes place. One can only hope!

One player in the Middlesbrough team who could do damage on Sunday is Tuncay...

I really do think this boy has to be closely watched. He usually plays behind the front two and is involved in everything that is good about Middlesbrough...

I would also like to see Moyes get him on the cheap in the summer if they go down... he would work very well with Arteta. He is very comfortable on the ball and links up well with his team. Also ,I think he is captain of the Turkish national team.

I don't think Moyes or even the players themselves would allow over confidence to creep in, and certainly not in a game with so much at stake. If Everton manage to get a balanced side out, Saha upfront and no messing about with the defence, then we should have enough to beat Boro, even on a good day for them!

After Wednesday’s performance, I am not feeling confident at all; and neither should the team.

I just pray to god Moyes doesn’t play Jags at right back

Jimmy, are you talking about Everton?s performance (0-0) or Middlesbrough?s (4-0)?

If we play a balanced side I think we?ve got every chance but we are down to the barebones thanks to injuries and Billy and his "watch this space" BS.

Jimmy Crack - "After Wednesday?s performance, I am not feeling confident at all; and neither should the team."

Well I appreciate what you are saying about Wednesday’s performance, but what are you trying to imply? That the team should not be confident going into the game? Well that will stand us in good stead.

Ajay’s right, the team should not be complacent, but they SHOULD be confident of getting a result. Otherwise in the mind they will already be defeated!

Good job the team don’t read TW! With some of the negative shit rolled out on here lately they’d start questioning their ability to beat Forest Green’s reserves! We were shit on Wednesday but we got a point away to a side battling to avoid the drop. What did Boro get on Wednesday apart from a hiding by Tottenham?

This will be no pushover, but the players must go into the game with a positive mental attitude. I don’t see how showing them footage of games were they were awful (ie Oldham) will help. By all means remind them of the dangers, but don’t turn caution into fear.

Villa weren’t up for it - nor were they for the CSKA match - so boro will be a harder game for us than that. O’Neil was dangerous, and scored, in the 1-1 earlier this season, but our home form and play has gotten so much better since then. Cant help feeling that I can book an advance ticket to Marylebone and a tube ticket to Wembley already! Coventry, Fulham, Burnley and the mighty Everton in hat for the semi’s please God!! COYB!

I have mixed feelings about the Boro game. Looking at their situation, they have 2-3 players like Aliadiaire-however one spells that name, Tuncay and Downing who could make life difficult for us.and cause an upset. They however are in deep relegation shit, so I have asked myself more than once how they will approach the game. They either have nothing to lose and will play freely or or just show up to lose as to fully focus on their relegation battle.

Regarding us, we have been painful to watch since Mikky?s injury and devoid of a midfield save Pienaar. That is very worrisome. On the plus side, we still have a solid defence and unless something crazy happens I think we may grind out an ugly win. Let?s hope so. COYB!

I was very impressed with the way Boro played on he break at Goodison. when defending corners the leave 2 upfront ? Tuncay and the striker, with Tuncay wider on the right and the CF on the half way line, but dropping back 5 yards to pick up a clearance. it goes wide to Tuncay who then switches play to Downing on the opposite wing ? and they are away. Just watch the way they do ? lots of pace, but we managed to counter this and restrict chances.
If we stop this tactic and whoever plays right back controls Downing we shouldn?t have a problem ? let them worry about our tactics going forward and lets get through to the semi?s.

It will be a tight game and Middlesbrough do have the potential to be tricky but thier recent upturn in form was at home; they struggled away in midweek and I think we will have too much firepower for them.

Pienaar and Fellaini to score in a 2-0 win.

I found this article on ToffeeWeb from just after the last time we played Boro in the cup. I think it shows the real disappointment and disheart Everton fans regularly felt whilst Smith was manager and the subsequent progress Moyes has made.

The game this weekend could prove a benchmark on how far Everton have come under Moyes as we look to return to Wembley for the first time in 14 years. We owe Boro one in the cup for what they did to us in the 2002 quarter finals. COYB

I think the lads have their collective feet on the ground. Although Boro have good attacking players, we do have some very fine defenders. Our issues isnt in attack or defence but midfield. I think Moyes will play Jags and right back again, simply because he needs Neville in Midfield. Personally though I would love to see Osman on the left, Gosling on the right with Rodwell or Felli partnering Pienaar in the centre with Cahill and Saha up top. I think that Pienaar is the closest thing we have to Arteta in centre midfield. Slight he may be, but skillful, willing, full of running and a good passer more than makes up for this. If Saha doesnt start I would be happy with Felli further forward and Neville in the middle to help Pienaar. For me this midfield of midget gems offers balance and skill enough to keep ball and shoot us on to Wembley.
