Sam Chedgzoy and Son

Comments (7)

Whilst trawling the net, I stumbled on a website that covered the family tree of the Chedzoy family. Most of us will know of Sam Chedzoy (he of the corner kick rule change) but the website mentioned that his son Sidney (born 1910) also turned out for the Blues. Does anyone have any more information on Chedzoy Junior?

That's not how it's spelt/spelled is it?

C H E D G Z O Y, with a G.

And only one listed as playing for Everton. Which means that, if his son did play, it was only at junior or reserves level ? he did not play for the first team in any senior matches.

I’m sure I read somewhere that Chedgzoy jr joined up with us at some point - I’ll check my records and report back. I don’t think he ever played a senior match though.

Old Sam was an interesting chap. After he left Everton to play in Canada, he carried on playing to quite a high standard until he was almost 50.

Well go on, what was the change in the corner kick rule all about then?

Off-topic I know but, anybody, Labradoddles... why bother???

In the late fifties, I was in Montreal on the "Corinthia" and spent some time in the company of Sam Chedgzoy, who was then a representative of a fruit company who supplied Cunard Line. Up until that time I had believed that the idea of taking advantage of the newly changed corner kick rule was Sam?s, but he made it quite clear to me that it was in fact Ernest Edwards (Bee) of the Echo, who first noticed the loophole in the new rule.

Michael,
Thanks for pointing out the error of my spelling ways.
In my defence I would point out that Sam’s ancestors used a number of variations on the same including Chedzoy, without the G.
I had always assumed that Chedgzoy was a foreign name but it fact it hails from Somerset.

I went to school with his great Grandson if that's a help.

Wasn?t the corner kick rule change where Sam Chedgzoy dribbled the ball from the corner & scored a goal that was then disallowed, of course! As a result, the FA realised they needed to modify the rule in question so that the corner kicker could not play the ball again until another player had done so. Technically, the goal should have stood.

Recalling a conversation I had years ago with a relative, Sam perished in a terrorist airline bombing. His memorabilia was accompanying him. And, yes, according to this same relative, he was the cause of a change in the corner kick laws.
