Today's game

So far so bad. A scrappy game with a lot of poor passing (maybe the swirling wind). They always looked like scoring first. Everton are a very predictable team at the moment.

Referee and linesmen have no guts. The clutching and grabbing on Cahill and Fellaini is so obvious but goes unpunished. When are we going to see some brave referees? Osman and Pienaar and Rodwell need to get involved more.

I thought Osman and Pienaar did better than they have been doing recently. I missed who crossed in for the Big Fella's opener. Musta been Ossie... Can't have been Baines... could it? Wrong side.

Two very nicely executed if simple goals. Just what we needed. Lived dangerously at times though... and how we will cope against Hull one or two of the Sky 4 at Wembley... I think we could do it once but twice is probably a step too far.

Well we might have reached a semi-final but, if today's display is anything to go by, we won't be going to Wembley twice.

I only saw the game on the internet, a poor quality French station, but we looked abysmal. I've seldom seen such poor passing. Having said that, the conditions looked pretty atrocious but even Boro managed to string passes together, why not us? How we miss someone to calm things down in the middle of the park!

Well at least we have reached a semi so let's make the most of it and hope for an improvement before we meet one of the big three.

In recent weeks both Osman and Fellaini have taken quite a bit of stick on here whilst trying to help the team out by playing while injured. Although the whole team played well today, I thought both these lads gave 110% and contributed greatly towards that 2-1 scoreline.

Poor Fella was treated like a rag doll by the Boro defenders and stricter referees may have taken stronger action but as usual he was expected to put up and shut up. Previously he has lost it a bit when provoked but I thought today he was quite composed given his treatment and boy did he enjoy that goal.

Ossie also deserves a special mention for the way he chased up and down the pitch frequently supporting Jags who should not be RB but I suppose you got to give it to the manager, we got the result.

And although this is about little and large I have to mention Saha who showed again that he is a class striker.

Let's not be under any illusions lads. If we play like we did today in the semi we will be embarrassed. I can safely say we are lucky we were playing a piss poor Boro today, any other team in the 4 divisions would have been more up for it. But credit to Moyes for changing it. Wasn't too sure of Rodwell going off but it worked. I think it's time for Cahill to move back into the midfield. That was the difference. The draw is on now. Watch this space! Its gonna be Arsenal again!

"Wembley, here we come" used to mean something but now it means we're still one step away from the real McCoy. However, the cup is the cup and, despite drawing Manure, we can still make it. Sure, they want the cup too but we probably want it more. They will probably rest players because of commitments elsewhere although they do have replacements better than everyone else.

Our defence was off colour today but somehow I feel they will come good again at Wembley. We showed our cup fighting spirit again today and the Saha substitution was the key allowing Timmie to move back in midfield where he really shone.

Second half today the lads started to play football without Mikel - Pienaar stepping up, Cahill taking a lot of responsibility and Fellaini looking like the class player he is.

Perhaps DM will now be aware of how best to use his best players, and everyone is required to say a prayer to whoever you worship for the continued availability of Louis Saha.

There’s still lots of season to go, and we turned a corner at half time today.

What a crucial player Cahill was for us today. Often criticised as being poor in the middle, he demonstrated yet again how important he can be to us playing in the middle of the park. His presence there rescued the game for us today.

As for comments that we might struggle against Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea without Arteta, I?m afraid I don?t buy into that and I really didn?t care who we got in the draw. Arteta has been terrific for us this season but to be fair he hasn?t always done it against the likes of Chelsea and Utd.

If my memory serves me right it was Fellaini who gave Utd a torrid time when we met at Goodison. He showed today that he is regaining his fitness and his overall contribution has improved; however, we need him to play in the middle if we are to overcome the Mancs.

No doubt there will be a great deal of interest in how Rooney performs against us but my money would be on Saha upsetting his former team, assuming he stays fit of course.

Rodwell and Neville together in the centre just did not work. They duplicate each other and neither are able to come and get the ball off the defence then turn and use the ball creativly. As soon as Cahill came deep at the start of the second half he demanded the ball and made things happen. Neville seemed happier and Pienaar and Ossie came into the game.

We need to keep Saha fit and allow Cahill and Fallaini to support from deeper. We may have accidently found the temporary answer to the Arteta problem. Rodwell should remain as cover for Neville for the time being.

We've got the best defence in the prem bar Man U. So why are we playing two defencesive midfielders?

As I said in the the thread, Painfull Night at Ewood, we need someone who can bring the two wingers and the front men into the game and that was not happening while we had Rodwell and Neville on the pitch.

Cahill made a massive difference.

Nice to see Tim Cahill showing Osman how to cross a ball from the right. Interesting to see most of the players, particularly Neville, giving Osman a real verbal going over on numerous occaisions today.

I can't remember him doing anything of real note again today? Perhaps he is saving it all up to lead Man U a merry dance.

The second half was as good as the first half was bad. It made a big difference having a forward on, who immediately put their cloggers under pressure.

I though Fellaini played a whole lot better and no booking!

Osman really has to get in the game, he was shocking today - the defining moment when he tried to take on Arca, who turned and still beat him to the ball. He gave Jags no help whatsoever, he jogged around like he was on a Sunday stroll!!!!

I fancy Chelsea in the final!!! $:o)

Judging by the lack of comment recently, save for the one negative comment in this current post, perhaps I am the only one to think that in recent weeks the form and contribution of one Everton player constantly remains understated, namely the contribution of Phil Neville.

I honestly feel that his displays in the last six weeks or so in particular have been absolutely outstanding. His displays in midfield particularly have been both surprising and crucial to at times holding a very disjointed team together.

Like many others, when he arrived and for a long time afterwards, I bemoaned his lack of passing ability in such a seasoned professional while never doubting his overall contribution to the side. However, I do honestly believe that his displays recently have been deserving of the highest praise and in fact his passing in particular has at last begun to reflect the seasoned professional he is. I do feel that his influence in the side is beyond measure and I am sure that the youngsters who have been drafted in have been reassured by his presence and influence alongside them.

I often feel that mention of Neville means that people immediately go to the frustrations that many of his earlier performances induced in many of us. Recently, however, I have been amazed and delighted at the new found assurance, the improvement in his passing ability and in his all round game.

In addition to which in an often corrupt, cheating soccer environment he remains a player and a man of genuine integrity and I do feel it deserves more widespread recognition. As a manager I am sure David Moyes must pencil his name in the teamsheet even in his sleep for I feel his presence on the pitch must bring much confidence to the manager and particularly when performing so effectively in so many areas of responsibility associated with captaincy.

In my humble opinion Phil Neville remains a credit to himself and his family, his club and to the game. Well done Phil Neville ? let?s hope he enjoys the honour of lifting the cup!

Agree about that - his ’reducer’ on Bates was a peach right in front of us! Have some of that! Can anyone tell me why Bates went down in the first half in his own penalty area? Did he hand ball it and try and pretend it hit him in the face? Chap in front jumped up and I lost sight of it!

Gary I thought it was handball too but will have to check replays to prove it, he raised his arm sure enough. The worst dive of the day was the Boro twat who went down on the wing and the second he got his free kick literally sprang from the ground like a rocket, Arca and Downing should have picked up Academy Awards for their dives.

Anthony, Pip was my man of the match by a long way.

Cahill looked great also playing the Arteta role, he actually stopped the ball and looked around for the pass. That was the big difference after half time. Rodwell is a decent player but need Arteta next to him to look really good.

Tony Waring, do us a favour and watch the game fully before criticising. The first half was appalling but the second half was reletively easy, when we realised we could actually pass the ball.

Three things struck me from today?s game:

First, how well Cahill played in the second-half role. Traditionally he has not been the most skilful or best passer, but today he seemed more composed and purposeful. Confidence from a fantastic season might be rubbing off, or he might be maturing as a player. Either way ? excellent.

Second, Fellaini not only played better (contrary to some on this site, he can pass a ball), he behaved better. Despite some incredible provocation, he stayed cool and we all benefited. A strong(er) word from Davey in his ear, perhaps?

Third, Saha is not only a class act ? without him (or another credible forward) up front, we lack balance in midfield and tend to revert to hoofball.

As someone mentioned earlier, a centre pairing of Rodwell and Neville (good as he has been) does not work. We can only hope that Hibbert returns to fitness and Saha gets fit enough to start the semi-final. We then might just give Man U a run for their money.

Saha’s introduction changed everything again today. He makes other players around him play so much better. Arteta has the same quality. Just look at Cahill and Pienaar in the second half. He truly is a world-class player. It’s not just the system Everton played in the second half but also the extra quality a player like Saha brings to the team.

However, Gavin, he is superstitous to the n-th degree, hence why we are kicking towards the Gwladys in the first half when he wins the toss, this is because we started to play better this season when it happened.

Are all those above who are criticising our performance forgetting that half our team are injured? That there?s nobody, bar 1 or 2 players, on the bench who can come on and make a difference?

It wasn?t the best game but I?ve seen worse! And don?t forget that Boro were basically fighting to save something from this season.

I was getting tired of the treatment of Fellaini today. As clumsy as he is at times the defenders were all over him... where?s the fucking ref when you need him? However, I wish he?d get his haircut cut!!

So Utd it is. Well, clearly we?ll be the underdogs, clearly we have nothing to lose but to go out there and give it our best... hopefully between now and then DM will knock the midfield into shape... if only we had a fully fit team, eh?

Oh, well.

An impressive second-half turnaround and an overall deserved victory. We needed to win and win we did. Now Moysey needs to solve our midfield crisis. We have no chance against Manure if we play like today, but we have one month to fix our midfield.

Also, I think Moysey needs to give Lars a debut vs Stoke at RB. I like Yobo, but he has a good head and is fast as fuck and maybe an interseting midfield choice. Then again, maybe I?m just high...

Good result and improved second half performance by the lads. Perhaps we should've made sure of it with a third as we had numerous opportunities on the break but it?s all elementary now.

Fellaini definitely put in an improved performance today which was pleasing to see. He can be like a new signing for us going into the final stretch of the season.

I?d agree that Cahill was a calming influence for us when he dropped back into midfield and I know he is capable of playing in that sort of role from his games with Australia. Maybe for Man U, a combative central midfield pairing comprised of Timmy and Pip (with perhaps Fellaini dropping deep from time to time) might do the trick.

On a more negative note, I think Jagielka at right-back is a big no-go. I hope Hibbert is back fit soon because since Yobo came into the side, we have looked considerably shaky, and the nervousness seems to be beginning to spread to Howard too! Osman I?m afraid was a passenger again today. His performances have been well documented this season so I won't get into it again but the right-midfield position is definitely a high priority come summer.

Semi-finals at Wembley... bring it on!

I agree with most of the surprisingly good comments on Cahill. Cahill played the ’Scholes’ position in the 2nd half and I personally see him develop more into this position in the future to prolong his career. He can’t keep bombing into the box forever, his body won’t be able to take it either.

Yes Tony Williams I agree that we were somewhat better in the second half. Even so we could have lost it if Boro had converted half the scoring chances they had. I stick by my assessment of technical skills. If we play the same against Man Utd we?ll get slaughtered.

Last evening I watched Getafe v Malaga. Neither have a cat in hell?s chance of overhauling Real or Barca but the skill they displayed ? especially in passing ? was outstanding. To have a chance of winning anything, you have to be able to keep hold of the ball!

Yes.. Everton are a shadow of the team they were when Arteta was pulling the strings but two draws and two wins since he disappeared shows that the team can win ugly and grind out results. I don?t expect the current side to play like Barcelona with the present threadbare squad. Pity those who do... what planet are they on!

Good to see Felliani shut the TW slaggers up! Interesting that United fans see the big feller as a real threat and envisage a battle royale with Vidic and Ferdinand.

Now... let's grab another ugly win against Stoke and get on 48 points. I?m still worried about West Ham overtaking us.

Think people are being a bit too harsh on Ossie. Yes, again he didn?t pay particularly well, but it was another improved performance, with plenty of energy and some neat passing and running in the second half.

I think we?re all in agreement that if we want to challenge in the league and win cups then he is not a long term solution as a first XI player, but he is still a class act and a more than able squad man, with ability to play across the whole of the midfield.

Re: the semi final ? we played Utd at home in October and (arguably) we were the better team at a time when our home form was abysmal. I see no reason why we can?t (at least) take them to penalties, but we certainly need to be on top form. One concern would be the Wembley location ? will the atmosphere, ocassion and (more importantly) the size and width of the pitch favour Utd: let?s face it ? they do have more experienced, "big game" players and more threat from the flanks.

Yes we were poor first half but it is the business end of the season now and we won. Also it is 4 weeks before the semi so anything can happen. More time for us to get people fit and find the right defence/midfield balance.

We have a chance to put another 7 to 12 points on the board. Man Ure will have Chelski breathing down their necks in the Premier League over the next few weeks. Plus the, ?I finished in the top 4 Cup? to worry about. If the Red Shite get past Madrid and Utd get past Inter I will have fingers crossed they are drawn together. This means they will be playing each other on the Tues/Weds in the second leg of the quarters just before the semi?s weekend.

This is the case regardless of the draw so.... One game at a time.

Some fans are never satisfied. When a player returns from injury it can take 3 - 6 games easily to get back to match sharpness & strength. Osman, Pienaar & Fellaini are all in this pot, and Saha clearly has a fundamental issue with hamstrings etc.

Sure, the first half was fairly dire, but don?t fprget M?Boro have just beaten Lpool & West Ham and were never going to be easy. Despite this, I thought second half (1 free kick aside) was all our & we played some good stuff.

If you took Carrick out of Man U, or Lampard out of Chelsea, or Gerrard out of Liverpool, you get a weakened team with less rhythm & confidence. We?ve lost our main man, it?s had an effect which has been amplified because the other creatives (Pienaar, Osman etc) have just returned from injury.

My only real concern is Moyes playing Jags at RB. He & Lescott are so good together that it is sacrilege to split them up. I just pray that Hibbert is back soon, and that Yobo is left out. Yobo is a great Evertonian, but we look impregnable when Jags/Lescott are in the centre. When we play Villa and Man U it HAS to be with our best defense in place & they need to be re-united well before that game to get back in the groove.

I think the prospect of playing at Wembley & getting to the Cup Final will inspire the players to push on their performances, rather than be distracted. I expect us to improve over the next few weeks and hit Villa and Man U at our peak. Only concern is Saha?s fitness.

Why oh why do we need such a half-time kick up the arse to get into gear for such a game?

The first half seemed we were not at all interested. The commentator here in Germany said something like ?Everton are playing the hoof long ball ? like English Football in the Stoneage? and while I hated him for saying it ? he was right.

Okay, no Arteta ? but we have other decent players who can play football. Not just that but we just weren?t interested in challenging for the ball ? nowhere. Don?t get me wrong I was delighted with the win, but Boro and 2nd last in the PL and the 2 goals were gifted. Great to see Cahill going back into midfield and Saha getting in? nice to see DM waking up too. I thought how long will he wait before he explodes at that crap.
