Tesco Ground deal approved

Don't panic !!!

I spotted this topical item on the NE Wales news. Tesco have received the all clear to build a new superstore at Rhosymedre near Wrexham which will include a new stadium for League of Wales side Cefn Druids.

Despite objections, the scheme received the go-ahead from Wrexham planners who are mindful of the jobs that will be created in an area of high unemployment: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7942019.stm

Er... thanks for that, Peter.

So the precedent is set? Apparently, Tesco have a pretty high success rate for getting their projects planning approval. I would be very surprised if DK founders on that rock... The crunch point will probably be whether, in these changed financial conditions, EFC can still come up with it's share of the money ? however big or small that may be.

It wasn’t the Cefn that killed it off it was the Tesco Cefn they carried it off in.

Just replace Cefn with Everton.

They are only moving 500 metres up the road!

Tesco want to build a 25,000 sq ft supermarket on the land the stadium at Plas Kynastone Lane occupies.

Druid’s existing stadium does not meet UEFA compliancy standards and so they could be kicked out of the League of Wales unless they improve their facilities - so they chose to accept Tesco’s offer and move to a field on the other side of a road.

Agree with you Michael on this one. The financial crisis / credit crunch makes it much MORE likely that Kirkby will be approved. And it makes it LESS likely that Everton will be able to fund it.

Brilliant, I have always told my mates that my second team is Nerys Cefn Druids, simply because of the name.

Now we have a common ground (pun intended)

Rather pathetic for ?the ante mob? to be relying on that hope methinks. The money ? or rather the way to aquire it ? is already in place. Roll on the Tescodrome, say most logical Evertonians!

And how Daffy will you be getting there? Enjoy the void and choice of thousands of empty seats, your few hour wait to and from the game, your 30% hike in ticket prices to pay for the shed and empty seats, but hey logical my arse. Whatever will you do when Black Bill leaves you and the club behind in some bleak backwater?

I am not an anti, Richard, but I certainly wouldn’t count on "the money being in place" in the current environment. This is the worst financial crisis for a century, and we have no idea even which financial institutions will be left standing in 6-9 months time, much less what shape they will be in to lend anyone any money. The reality is that - unless the money is coming from abroad (eg Middle East) - the UK and other governments now basically supply all credit for the forseeable future.

Tescos is of course now vastly stronger than any bank in the world - so it will indeed be amazing if the Government turns down its proposed investment into the UK economy.

It?s not really a precendent. Supermarkets are always doing things like this. Theres a book by George Mobiout called Captive State: The Corporate Takeover of Britain. It?s well worth a read and shows the lengths which some supermarkets go to (notably Tesco) to build stores in less well-to-do areas.

Richard Dodd,

What?s being "logical Evertonians" got to do with it? If we were all "logical" then we wouldn't be disappointed by losing to superior teams and we would?ve long accepted that we have only a tiny chance of winning anything... every season.

But we don't, we still feel the pain of another trophy-less campaign and still feel we should win every game. Logical doesn't come into play being an Everton fan.

Doddy, there is nothing logical about football, how logical is it that I have put my boxers I was wearing for the Middlesborough game aside to wear again at Wembley,, smelly and deffinitely not logical.

You can be certain that Tesco will not see the project fail for the lack of a cash contribution from Everton. They will be more than happy to stump up another £80M in return for ?naming rights? of the stadium in perpetuity. Dodd may be a pillock but he?s spot on with this one!

Don?t you just hate taking the bait? ok I?ll bite..

I have an idea for all those logical Evertonians out there.. we can raise some extra cash by having a competition to come up with a new motto for the club? lets face it, the name Goodison Park will be gone? status of being based in the city of Liverpool gone.. if Desperation Kirkby goes ahead, we need a new motto, as a medium quality breeze block stadium that might now only have a 40,000 capacity does not fit with our motto. Logically, we should update it.

We need to be logical about this remember, there?s no way nil satis nisi optimum applies to the club if we accept the third rate shyte on offer in Kirkby. Nil (nothing) satis (satisfies) nisi (if not) optimum (the best). Nothing satisfies if not the best - it?s gotta go as soon as we get the keys to the Tesco shed. It?s only logic.

Perhaps we need a new badge too? Prince Rupert?s Tower was only used due to its proximity and connection to the area in which we formed and played. No longer play there so what shall we replace the tower with now? How about the Tesco Supermarket? It?s what we will be known for if DK gets the go ahead so what the hell?. Logic.

Of course logically Tesco will pay £80m for naming rights if the logical board haven’t set aside the cash (plus a bit extra in case of an illogical event) needed - I mean that’s what logically got them to where they are today by giving cash away. What logical fan wouldn’t want to be in the logical new home with it’s logical transport plans. I mean it would be illogical to have thought that one through - or have I got my wires crossed?

We could replace St Rupe?s Tower on our crest with the letter ?T?. Since by then Tesco will have us by the short and curlies. The logical thing would be to celebrate this. By incorporating this milestone by amending the Club crest.

Maybe we should just add to it.

"Nothing but the best will do... however, there is a two-for-one deal on Tesco?s own brand beans in aisle 5"

Not too sure it will fit on the badge though...

So the Money is in place, is it Richard? Has BK got it ring-fenced?

I really hope we win the cup this year, then when about a million people take to the streets in celebration the "logical Evertonians" will understand just what they?ve given up.

Colin, it?s not that easy for Tesco to just stump up another £80m to give us for ?naming rights? ? they have shareholders to answer to.

Tesco have already publicly stated they aren’t interested in sponsorship or naming rights of the shed, by that point we’d already have given slimy Tel what he wants; the grounds to build an obscenely large Tesco supermarket with more crap in it than the town it would sit in to ever be able to consume, he never has and never will have a duty to Everton FC he answers to the board and shareholders of Tesco.

I know that this is probably a silly possibility, but what if the whole scheme gets the required approval and Everton decide to pull out of the proposed stadium development? I assume the Retail element would go ahead regardless, or is it all tied together?

Anthony Dyer - It’s tied together in a circular argument:

Everton are saying they rely on the retail for enabling funds without which they can’t build a stadium.

The retailers are saying the amount of retail area has to be large to justify the stadium’s prescence, without the stadium they can’t build on the open land because there’s no justification for the new retail area.

Barry Scott, Tesco have already bought rafts of Kirkby town centre up so, either way, expect them to build something... at the very least an average sized Tesco if not one plus a Tesco Express.
