Our Last 8 games

Comments (10)

4 at home, 4 away; 6th and 7th places in the league will qualify for the Uefa Cup.

Despite being so many points ahead, we actually have a pretty tough run-in and 7 of our games involve teams that are all going for Europe (Sunderland the exception). Now this can been seen as good or bad as we really only need 4 wins based in this as in effect they are 6-pointers in the best possible way

I do fear though that, with our squad as it is, we aren't going to finish so strong and players will have their minds set on the Semi-Final...

At least we have the points on the board.

We?ll our run in is like this

Wigan (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Chelsea(A)
Man City (H)
Sunderland (A)
Tottenham (H)
West Ham (H)
Fulham (A)

I think if we can win our four home games, we?ll do alright. Of course trips to Villa and Chelsea are obviosuly not going to be simple, and away to Sunderland and Fulham could be tricky if we play like we played today... but I think if we wanna go for Champions League then Villa is the most important game runnning in.

CL is totally out of it now. Arsenal are 8 points clear when you take into account GD. I really feel we will settle for the Europa Cup now and consolidate our top 6 finish. The FA Cup will probably see our most passionate performance now also...

I agree, Adi. Arsenal are playing too well to lose three more games than we will. It’d be good to put Villa back in their place and finish 5th though and solidfy our place as the real threat to the top 4. With Utd and Chelsea wobbiling and Arsenal beatable on their day the FA Cup suddenly looks attainable mind!

If we finish with a Uefa cup spot and possibly a cup final appearance, then considering the injuries to Yak and Arteta etc. it would be pretty good. COYB cheer up, 2 defeats in 19 games is bloody good.

Sweet Mother of Jesus! Champions League? No, no, no... Remember last time?! Billy won?t open his purse just because we qualify and we?ll be humiliated again ? especially now that 4th may end up playing a good team in the qualifier.

They just are not up to it. Decent, hard working lads but limited. Settle for fifth or sixth and hope they can persuade one player who can consistently give the killer pass to spend a couple of years here.

Champions League looks increasingly unlikely, but I agree it would be nice to finish above Villa as I think we deserve it more (lack of resources).

Mike McLean - "Sweet Mother of Jesus! Champons League? No, no, no. Remember last time?! Billy won?t open his purse just because we qualify and we?ll be humiliated again - especially now that 4th may end up playing a good team in the qualifier." - You have got to be joking mate?

Yeah, let?s not try to get into the CL cos we might face somebody good and get beat. Are you for fucking real? I agree with your assessment of the current squad to an extent (especially without Arteta), hard working and organised but with limited creativity. However, I don?t hope that we won?t qualify for the CL for fear of being beat!

One of the excuses being touted for yesterday's debacle was that Pompey are fighting for their lives and so had more to lose. Now, the last time I looked, we had a chance of keeping the pressure on Arsenal and Villa, and nicking a Champions League place, so isn?t that incentive enough to really have a go?

Mike, We weren?t humiliated in the CL qualifier, they hoodwinked us by hiring ?the best referee in the world? Collina so he could deny us a perfectly good goal with complete credibility! He even told some of our players what he was after they asked him why Duncan?s goal was disallowed!! Thus not having to have 5 PL teams in CL but still let their friends the Dark Side scum in by the backdoor at the same time.

After yesterday, that's probably going to be the standard for the rest of the season I think we have it all on finishing 6th or even 7th (and even this depends on a PL team winning the CL).

I know we didn?t play well yesterday but the conspiracist in me thinks we?d have still won with a better ref. It seems now we?ve dared to threaten the status quo of the top 4, decisions go against us. That was no way a corner that led to the first goal and Howard was definitely fouled for the second.

I think the ref allowed the home team to push, pull and to some extent kick our lads about ? challenges on Pienaar and Jo were worthy of cards and shirt-pulling on Fallaini potential penalties. The trouble was that we weren?t good enough to beat the ref, and we are going to have to be in a few more scraps of this nature.

One positive ? Lars Jacobsen is now a full squad member and will be used in the games to come when needed. We need all the help we can get.
