Michael Owen

Comments (35)

As everyone is aware, Michael Owen is on a Bosman at the end of the season. He will definitely be leaving Newcastle and word on the street is that he is desperate to return to the North West. If this is true then that would leave Everton in pole position for his signature.

Would this be a shrewd piece of business by David Moyes? There is no doubt that Owen is one of the most natural goalscoarers to have graced the Premier League. However, he is injury prone and would demand huge wages.

Can he still consistently perform week-in, week-out in the Premier League? Would he fit into our 4-5-1 system? Should Moyes be doing everything he can to secure Michael's signature or should he leave well alone?

Christ not the Owen rumour/conjecture again. We cannot afford his wages. There is no way Moyes will sign a sick note player after the horrific injuries we have had this year. If Owen heads for the NW expect it to be Citeh that sign him. No great loss.

Even if we could afford his wages, I don?t want a Wanker like him coming to Everton, let him go to the Manchester Arabs.

Wouldn't be unhappy if we did or didn't sign him. Can't see it though, he would have to halve his wages at least to fit in with the top earners here. Plus, even if he did that, it would still be another Louis Saha type gamble!

Dont be fooled by the fact that no money would go to Newcaslte neither, no transfer is free! The players and agents just use that as an excuse to get themselves a pay-day before they have even set foot on the training pitch!

No need to sweat over whether he is coming to us or not. He?s got such a poor injury record that I hear that he is going on loan to Holby City with a view to a permanent contract.

Yea, OK, on a pay-per-play basis of £5 per minute plus an extra tenner for every goal scored!

I’ve got a better idea: let’s just give £50k a week to the Everton Former players’ Foundation - because over a season we’d see Dave Hickson and Graeme Sharp on the pitch at Goodison more times than Owen.

And with more chance of scoring.

You heard it hear first, but I live not far from Michael's stables and we share the same rat catcher.

He wont be playing for anyone at the end of the season. He told my ratman that he's retiring to concentrate on his training business near Malpas.

I agree, it would be a big risk but it could go the other way and he turns out to be a crackin signing. If he would take a huge pay cut, a new club might do him the world of good...

Good call mate. I totally agree with you. Owen would arrive with his own treatment table and would be seen less than Shandy Andy!

Let the Mancs have him. I suspect he would be off to the RS if they start sniffing around.

It wouldn’t quite be the same as going back to Ginola/Gazza days, but not far off. Come to think about it, weren’t those two more capable of turning out than Owen?

This isn’t the direction we should be going.

Better bring his own treatment table, no room on ours. Rumour has it that Owen’s treatment table comes with quadraphonic stereo, school facilities for his children, and a cup holder. The technology is similar to the TARDIS.

I am sure Owen will leave Newcastle for a club in the NW or even the midlands (Villa ?) just to be close to his horse racing interests, where his eventual future lies.

Anyone that has seen his racing set up near Malpas would be impressed, think of Southfork-Dallas only bigger and you get the picture.

Where would he go? Well, City can afford anyone's wages, and also the kudos would be good for them, to attract a big name (other than that, they could try Englebert Humperdink!)

He could still yet end up with the dark side; I think on a free he will end up there, after all, when Torres is injured they need a replacement, and the thought of Owen getting something like his old shooting boots back, would fill me with alarm bells, similar to when Rush came back from Italy!

With us I think Blue Bill, would love to sign him, again for kudos, but I don't think Moyes would take this risk, unless the Yak goes to Spurs, we sign Owen on a free, and Moyes pockets the Yak money to finance a new midfielder? Now theres a thought... I think I?m eating to much cheese!

I wouldn't want him at Goodison. He comes across as a greedy footballer who has more interest in his horses than football. There are plenty of hungrier footballers out there that would make more of a difference at Everton than him. I think Moyes needs to look at his midfield options, ie, Moutinho & Krancjar, as I think we have enough forwards in our squad and can also rely on Cahill & Fellaini to play further up the pitch if need be.

Am I reading you lot correctly.

All the above can be applied to Saha. How many of you would turn him down now?

Owen is a proven world-class goal-scorer, an Everton supporter, English, and characteristically professional. We possibly have fuck all to spend come July and on Jô?s departure need another high profile striker to raise the standard in Yakubu?s absence.

Injury-prone or no turning our noses up at one of England?s greatest ever strikers is completely elitist and utter folly.

Even if we don?t get him, we should still try. Get him on a pay when you play deal and that would be (a la Saha) great business. Good article ? I?m in!

Jason Broome. You're spot on regarding Saha. But would Owen turn up at Goodison and say pay & display or settle for a contract that will run out in the summer? My own opinion is that Saha is still hungry for the game and I would ask the question when Owen signed for Newcastle ? why Newcastle? ? When other teams with more ambition etc etc went in for him... but he went for the cash. In his day, Owen was class but not any more. I would rather have Saha than a dirty red-shite.

World-class goal-scorer for nothing. Madness not to do it if we can afford it. And we could afford it. Sell either Yakubu or Saha ? both must be on at least £50k pw, VDM leaves in the summer and must be on at least £25k pw. I?m sure I heard Owen is on £100k pw at Newcastle. He may take less now.

From Owen?s point of view he needs to re-establish himself in the Premier League if he?s to get back in the England team, especially with the World Cup at the end of next season. If he goes to City, it's a risk for him ? they?re a team in turmoil, likely to have a new manager and bunch of new players who won?t know each other. If he goes to the RS, he?ll play second fiddle to Torres and Gerrard. In any event, it was clear a few years ago Benitez doesn?t like him.

If it were to happen, he could take us to the Champions League and all the extra money that would follow. If it's possible, it's a risk we can?t afford not to take. However, for what it's worth, I think he?ll go to Arsenal.

I think Moyes will have seen the light now, with so many players injured and on the sidelines. This fella?s a 1st class injury pro. don?t forget when he first went to the skunks he got injured and after months on the bench his first concern was getting back for England's first game, he?s not interested in clubs only the national scene.

Fuck him off.

Michael Owen has all the credentials for being a superb Moyes purchase:

1. He?s injured all the time.
2. He?s only 5?5"
3. He?ll never play for England again.
4. He?s past it.

Absolutely no way.

1) We as a club simply cannot afford to bring in players who have injury records like Darren Anderton or take a gamble on players like that

2) We cannot afford his wages. Even if he took half of his current wages, still way too expensive.

3) He?s way way way past his best and will never get anywhere near it. He was pretty one-dimensional at his peak i.e. very very quick

4) He?s a kopite now

Anyone who thinks it?s a good idea to bring him in is living in a fantasy land.

Jason Broome - Why should we try?
We got Saha for nothing and is on a pay-as-you-play. Wages which will also be significantly lower than Owen.

Do you for one minute, honestly believe that the greedy little Welsh dwarf would accept a pay-as-you-play contract. Not only that but for Everton, the shite's local rivals?

Do you honestly think that's possible? If so, you need to wake up. There are plenty of no-mark clubs who will pay him silly wages to join them.

I hear you Brian and respect your views, but strongly disagree. So we close the door on Owen, return Jô and we buy.... WHO??????? We have no money! Therefore (come the summer) the cream of Europe will be divided amongst those who do.

Even The Queen needs handouts. Becoming snobbish with an empty wallet is grossly moronic. The same whingers were out for Saha in August. Those who supported Saha?s signing have been proved right!

Owen turned us and Wigan down because he wanted to win things. He had ambition and Newcastle were the team we are now! Since then, Newcastle have fucked up and even long-term stalwart Shay Given preferred City. He is de-motivated and looking for a release. He has lost his passion for Newcastle but not football (hence his desperation to play for England).

Playing for Moyes and Everton focuses the mind. Our team spirit, drive and passion are second to none! So he?s a Kopite (so was Beardsley) ? what does that prove? A move will revitalise him next season (whoever he plays for) and IF he stays injury free? (IF), he will be at the top end of the scoring regime.

However, the acid test is simple: Would Owen be willing to take a pay cut or ?pay when you play? to come back to Merseyside for a season? If not? ?fuck him!? If yes ...?

Moyes would be foolish not to sign a proven top-flight goalscorer on a free transfer! Owen is one of England's all-time top scorers and every time he has a run of games he scores. He is not 33+ ? he is only 29 ? a change of scenery with us would do him a world of good and we could see the return of the old Michael Owen with us.

Jason Broome ? you?ve missed the point completely; Owen would never accept a pay-as-you-play deal ? end of. Even if we got him on a free, we would have to pay in excess of £80k per week. With his injury record, can we afford that? ? err... No!

"Even the Queen needs handouts" ? you think getting a past-it, injury-prone striker on a free and paying him probably £100k per week is a handout? What has "snobbbish" got to do with it? You?re nuts.

"He went to Newcastle to win things?" ? Are you off your bleedin' head? They haven?t won anything in 50 years, haven?t been close in recent years, and we had finished in the Champions League when he turned us down. He went there down to pure greed and because he had no other options. He would never play for us either.

You said yourself "If" he stays fit. Well for the sort of wages he would have to be paid, a club which has an "empty wallet" can?t afford to take that chance.

"Even The Queen needs handouts. Becoming snobbish with an empty wallet is grossly moronic." Did you really type that? What the fuck?

Ian Tod ? the old Michael Owen was about blistering pace. He?s never going to get that back. He?s not even got in to one of Capello?s squads even when he?s been fit. You?ve got to be seriously naive if you honestly think that.

What the fuck are you talking about? How do you know that he wouldn?t take a pay cut, or pay when you play? How do you know how much he wants? Did he tell you? Have you also seen him naked? Did he give you one of those long kisses?

Avoiding and shifting your way through my comments without answering the question. Swinging wildly and missing the point. Would you like another go?

No Owen, no Yakubu, no Jô, no money? So who do we buy, and how do we do it? And don?t comeback with ?Arse & Rabbits!?

In the last 2 seasons ?29? year-old (slow and past-it) Owen has played 56 times and scored 23 goals. He has also scored 40 times for England. Your stats are as biased as your comments and your credibility is gone!

Owen is a tea-total, good mannered professional who supports Everton and prefers golf and horses to night-clubs and cheating. He doesn?t come with cloven hooves and a pitch fork!

In 2005 Newcastle WERE the bigger team. The quality of our squad was poor and we limped into 4th. Champions? League or no, we were tipped for relegation. After Real Madrid where would you go?

If he wants to play in the World Cup, he is in no position to be making demands. If he is really hungry to play on Merseyside again then money will not be his motivation. Pay when you play worked for Saha? Owen IS a viable option.

You must be tired of hearing this but? Try again!

I have faith in Moyes bringing in a top, fit striker. Is that your argument ? if I can?t suggest anopther striker we should get Owen? How utterly pathetic.
