Great Day At The Office

An excellent result today. Particularly pleasing to see Jô standing up a little more and popping in a couple ? first goal was particularly good, with Osman for once passing the ball early and decisively ? not fannying around 'flattering to deceive', as the good old cliché goes ? as he has an unfortunate tendency to do.

Many will say Ozzie's performance today proves how wrong all those people were to be dissing him on here. Well bollocks to that, he's still as frustrating as hell to watch. He should have shot when he overplayed the ball; when he did shoot, it was still mostly hopeless. Thank god he actually scored a goal, simple as it was!

Still, we're not allowed to be critical, are we? (How else are we gonna improve, I wonder??). Good result, though... but Villa are now leading 2-1 at OT!!! For us, it was the kind of game where you really hope we would go on to give them a right thrashing. But what am I thinking? Not something Moyes's teams do that often, is it?

If it’s a great day at the office what’s with the moaning at the end?

"For us, it was the kind of game where you really hope we would go on to give them a right thrashing."

4-0, is that not a thrashing? Or were we in danger of losing it?

Given the result, and that Wigan are no pushover (not to forget the away result against them) and that we actually did THRASH them today ... there’s a lot of complaining going on!!

Oh, well.

For me...this was an awesome result especially considering the depleted squad we have.

And Villa lost...even better!

Of course the other thing is that Villa made it hard work for Utd so hopefully come cup day (with everything else Utd are focused on) we really will have a chance!!

Blimey.....FA Cup winners and 4th...is that considered a double?

Seriously, well done lads today!!

Two things really, Giles:

1) Big wins involve scoring 5 goals ? that?s a thrashing.

2) Our motto: Nothing but the best will do. It?s an age-old Evertonian tradition to look for what constitutes "the best". It was a great day at the office (especially looking at the injury list, don?t forget) but just watching the game, I couldn?t help feeling we can still play better and do better than this.

The test comes not against teams like Wigan that we should be comfortably beating ? exactly like today ? but against the like of Aston Villa (thankfully now just 1 point ahead of us) and of course Man Utd in two weeks time!

Sorry, but that's just how I feel about my team... there is no requirement for you to feel the same.

I just love that the two guys who take the worst beating from the slag patrol here, Osman and Fellaini, were the men of the match. Each scored one and made two.. best performance of the season for both. Naturally, I wouldn’t expect Paul to just give ’em a compliment without slipping in the "unfortunate tendecy" and "frustrating as hell" garbage... no chance we could just give credit when it’s due, right? No way.

It sure was great to see Hibbert back where he belongs, and I thought Jo did a great job of getting into the right positions.

And thanks to Mad Alex bringing on a 17-year-old kid that nobody’s ever heard of.... we’re only one point back of Villa and the RS are pounding their heads on their bar tables in frustration. What a great day all around.

Bang out of order on Ossie. He’s a class act - he has just struggled for form this season. If you’ve watched Everton regularly over the last 5 years you’ll know just how important he has been.

Paul H - Of course we can play better and will do better than this but you can only play the eleven in front of you.
A very professional performance.
We got the job done.
We did not get involved in a battle.
We were able to ease off and make the planned substitutions.
We scored 4 goals, so improved our goal difference.
We kept a clean sheet.
We gained 3 points on Villa.
We are in the business end of the season, so a perfect day at the office.

Yeah Ossie was top notch today, deserved his goal and played a big part in a good win today. Not every player makes a goal at the end of every move. Ossie made Everton tick in the final third today, something which hasn't happened in a while... well done, Leon and the boys.

Before the Everton game Wigan had only conceeded 16 goals from 15 away games - we stuck four past them and undertandably took the foot off the gas to rest vital players and give others valuable match practice.

Ossie was involved in the build up for three of the goals and scored the other.

... and still people moan - I guess I’ll never understand this football lark

Paul you say:

Do you really believe any criticism on this board improves the team? Do you really have such disregard for Moyes and his management team that you think they can't improve the team without our critique? I?m sure I?ve interpreted that wrong and you will clarify.

Paul Hardcastle, you are ?allowed to be critical?, but those who disagree are ?allowed to say so? too. Seems fair, no?

I think you?re on one thing ? Osman?s performance today doesn?t eclipse several sub-standard ones. That said, Ossie always gives his all, and I shake my head when the same fans (speaking generally now) who decry the lack of loyalty of players these days will continually slag two one-club players who never lack commitment ? namely Ossie and Hibbert.

On a lighter note, how refreshing that a 4-0 win inspires an outpouring of enthusiasm and devotion!*

Good to see top performances from hate figures... to some deadheads on here.... like Jo, Fellaini and Osman. After the Pompey slump it shows that life goes on without Arteta. Villa can be beaten next week. Their confidence will be shattered and United look to be off the pace... Looking good, Houston!

You're having laugh aren?t you?, that was by far and away our easiest game at Goodison this season, we dominated from start to finish and could take our best players off with half-an-hour to go.

Liverpool absolutely tonked Fulham yesterday and that ended 1-0. Are you saying that you HAVE to score 5 goals before you call it a thrashing? Strange thinking that.

Sigh! Wigan are "the sort of team we should be comfortably beating".... Oh dear. Perhaps only an Evertonian could write that of the eighth team in perhaps the best league in the world! Who as Kevin pointed out let in 20% of their total away goals in one game today - against us. Even though we relaxed for the last third of the game.

4-0 today was a great result. Of course we can play better, and of course manager and players will examine this game like all others to try to do so. Criticism is of course allowed. But so is some genuine credit when credit is due. And also some realism that we do not have a God given right to beat almost every team that is put in front of us.

Just read the Telegraph report of the game. Writer Rory Smith...’ Quicker than David Bentley more reliable than Aaron Lennon yet Leon Osman is never mentioned in despatches when potential heirs to David Beckham are mentioned. After he single handedly orchestrated the demolition of Wigan, perhaps its time for Cappelo to take note’.
Steve Bruce...’that’s the best a side has played against us all season’.

Right....carp away.....

I won?t carp away but we?ve played better than that this season. 4-0 is a great confidence booster but I think things ran for us today and slightly flattered us.

Talking points for me are: Fellaini actually looked a more mature player today. Nice touch and showed restraint when it mattered, Cahill is so influential but looked knackered at times, Osman seemed to play with more confidence and ran at players a bit more, Neville looked like a quality midfielder and orchestrated things superbly, Hibbert actually passed the ball quite well at times (only reverting to type once in the second half when launching a centre to non-existent players at the back post!), Jags was solid as usual.

Great result, especially with Villa losing. Negative, if I had to look for something - we allowed them too much possession at the edge of the box which could have been disastrous against a better team.

Despite his two goals, I still have reservations about Jo. Worth a punt but only if available for £5m or less.

But all in all, a very good day at the office

Nonetheless, it is a fan site so I suppose people are entitled to spout whatever shite they want to.

The team did well today and deserve a lot of praise. Just as the team was rightly slaughtered second half against Portsmouth which was a decrepit display, or for that matter, the ridiculous showing against Wigan earlier in the season, then, out of balance and perspective, Iet's cheer bashing the pie chompers with the ugliest manager in the history of the game.

For all the people slagging Leon Osman off this season, let's be clear ? if you had were carrying an injury for most of the season and unable to train regularly then you wouldn?t be at your best would you? It was the same last season with Arteta when he was playing with an injury. The reason Ossie played well today was spelt out by David Moyes after the match ? he?s been able to train every day for the last two weeks which is the first time this season he?s managed to do that.

Good to see us passing the ball without Arteta in the team, we are capable of it and we seemed to have found the right balance with Cahill and Neville in the middle, both players have upped their games in the middle this season and have been excellent.

As for Osman, he was excellent and he is capable of playing like that. He?s had an inconsistent season but the injury hasn?t helped; as Moyes said, he hasn?t trained consistenly this season, he?s missed a lot.

I will continue to laugh at people who call him a Championship player, he?s not the long term answer but he?s a very good player to have in the squad, I certainly appreciate his contributions.

Can i suggest ALL look at the Daily Telegraph on Monday, the match report is on the site now. Sure, Leon sometimes frustrates, but a loyal and long-term servant of the club he is and I trust that the comments from a respected journalist add food for thought. Pity supposed supporters find it so easy to critisise our players particularly the home-grown ones.

Just a thought but the "Nil satis" stuff, when did it ever apply other than a dream for the future?

Paul, it's not about you or the others who come on here having a go at the club/manager/players/chairman (like the joker on the other thread questioning where transfer monies go to), it's about supporting the club and whilst not believing all we are fed, still supporting in a positive way rather than seeking to enhance our own limited reputations on this site ignoring the bigger picture of what we actually want to happen to the club and even further what in the cold light of day we would do differently.

Just seen today why Fellaini cost 15 mill - he was superb, brought the ball down under extreme and illegal pressure for the first, scored the second, and got 2 assists for the last 2, was all over the pitch, didn?t look at all clumsy and was composed on the ball...

I can understand to an extent why people criticise Osman, but you gotta look at the positives ? gives 100%, loyal, clever feet, and when it clicks, he?s a real asset, like today.

On a final note, some of you need to contact the Oxford Dictionary to make them aware of their mistake, as their dictionary doesn?t define a thrashing as 4-0!!

That's why he has had some inconsistency, so leave off him and give him break ok.

As for Everton, Steve Bruce commented that we were the best side performance wise that they have playe this season, so don't let's underestimate.

My worry is we still lack fight. Portsmouth, Newcastle and Blackburn are fighting for their Premier League lives, Wigan are cruising in mid-table. Sunderland may cause us huge problems because of this. Hopefully, the games against West Ham, Tottingham and Fulham will prove to be as easy as yesterday.

And if this is all down to the training he?s put in ? then why wasn?t he able to pass for the entire 90 minutes?

Some people will believe any old crap. If he hasn?t been fit ? and this is the reason for his abysmal performances this season ? then why did Moyes consistently start him?

I thought the lads played well, a good victory and good for confidence, needed with the semi approaching!

Someone asked why people are still moaning. It?s just the way they think. Some people filter out any positives and most of the time concentrate on the negatives. They?ve practiced it for years and so it has become ingrained.

Anyway, the game. I though Tony Hibbert was great, we look a lot better with him these days (sometimes didn?t used to!!). His crossing is also much better. Fellaini ? man of the match, brilliant I thought.

As for Osman, excellent. I have stuck up for him many times in the past. He has consistently put in good performances over the years and has been a vital player. Good player, love to see him in the side. Great attitude too. The lad can pass, great control, works hard and can score too. Were all the numpties who constantly slag him off (saying he should not be in the side) shouting at Moyes to remove him yesterday?? Those people who bang on about how he shouldn?t be in the team/squad haven?t got a clue. Thank goodness Moyes is picking the side and not some of you lot!! Or maybe you can do better???

I am made up for Leon Osman. I know he hasn?t always shown it this season but he is a ?proper? footballer. One of perhaps a couple that we possess that are genuinely able to play with both feet. We were looking for him to come to the fore once Mikel was injured but it?s well documented that he?s been playing with an injury of his own.

Remember, he scored the goal that got us on our way in the cup. If we realise all of our ambitions as we?d like for the remaining games I?d expect Osman to play a significant part. Sure, I?m aware as fellow admirers are, of his limitations which are posed purely around his size. Year on year I?ve seen him learn to counter this disadvantage and he?s got better and better at applying physical presence to his superb natural ability.

Osman for me, perhaps epitomises more than anybody else what this current side is about. He?s had to work his nuts off to make the grade with Moyes and Everton. It?s never been lost on me that he?s one of our own either and contrary to a lot of opinion on here it seems, love seeing him wear our jersey.
