God knows what next week's game is going to do to me...

A couple of observations about today we need to tighten up on if we are to get anything out of the semi.

1. We need more guile in midfield. There seems to be a lot of possession gained last week and this week by the opposition. We just seem threadbare in the centre. For the first half next week, if I was Moyes, I would start with a five-man midfield. It needs to be tight and compact but played in such a way that is almost a 4-3-3 when in attack and revert to a 4-5-1 man when chasing the ball.

2. Most important, I feel is again (last week and this), we failed most of the time to get the second ball. Whenever as an example, the ball is hoofed and Jo or Fellaini go for it, we do not seem to be onto the loose ball and as a result give the ball away. This was happening in the last third of the pitch.

Curing this problem I think it will allow to cause many more goal attempts than we are currently harvesting.

All in all a lot of food for thought for next week (Christ, my nails)

COYB AND WIN.

I reckon Moyes post-match interview could be quite something.

Well done to O?Neill though for creating the modern-day equivalent of Wimbledon, but cunningly packed with the worst set of divers in world football.

Ashley Young man of the match? My arse. Oh, and a blinder there from Webb.

It will be interesting to see whether the MotD?s luvvies this evening point out that the saintly MON?s Villa are just a cheating hoofball team who have been extraordinarily lucky this season and should be in mid-table. Somehow I doubt it....

Oh well, I fancy us to overtake them still. They really aren?t very good. And we played some really good stuff at times today.

Arsenal away from us both now unfortunately. The Rich 4 have shown once again that, er, being rich really helps. Over a season, you can?t really beat having a greater number of world class players in your team and having a bigger squad.

Great game, we played some great stuff and looked very much like a deserved top 6 side. The goals conceded were unfortunate and not really major defensive errors. My only worry was Howard?s positioning and decision making.

As for Villa, they played their part in a great game, never gave up and forced us back for long periods. My only gripe is Ashley Young?s persistant diving. He was intent on getting Hibbert sent off and winning a pen. Talented footballer but one hell of con artist... Another of his kind to come in 7 days... Hibbo needs to be on his guard!

All in all a good performance and a great platform to go into a cup semi. IMWT.

Howard - Not his usual standard, but not helped alot by a not too solid back four today. Gave me constant headaches when he went off his line... 5

Hibbert - Had a really tough time today and his confidence faded away in the second half. Poor, good substitution... 4

Baines - Good when he comes forward and mainly solid. Super cross for our first... 7

Lescott - Carew gave him a world of grief today and he gave away a silly pen. Definetely not his best game... 5

Jagielka - Mostly solid, but not looking super-confident today... 6

Ossie - On and off... actually thought he played well at times only to fade out in other periods... 6

Neville - Good game, but gave away too much room in between midfield and defence. As always played with his heart! ... 7

Cahill - I love this man?s ability to score. Tim Cahill, I adore you! ... 8

Fellaini - More involved than he has been lately, played well and got his goal. Still a bit slow in some situations... 7

Pienaar - Great goal, loads of runs and our maestro today. Clever flicks, good dribbling. MotM... 9

Jo - Looked ok in the first half, became a spectator in the second. Could have been brought off a little earlier? ... 5

Jacobsen - Did well after replacing Hibbo. Decent speed and tough to get past.

Saha - Got one opportunity, but blasted it over. Didn?t get much more done as Villa pressed forwards.

After today’s game, I think my main concern would be the form of Tony Hibbert. It doesn’t look good for next week if he plays like today. I don’t know if he was taken off because he was having a stinker or because he was in danger of getting sent off. Either way, Jacobsen may be the preferred choice next Sunday.

Even though I’m disappointed at being pegged back twice from 2 goals up, it was the probably the best game I’ve seen this season and, generally, I think we’re in good shape for next weekend.

I?m surprised nobody has said anything about the "penalty" ? yet another dodgy Villa pen this season. Surely what Lescott did warrants an indirect free kick? It wasn?t great defending, granted, but he didn?t even see Petrov when he lifted his foot ? how could that be intentional?

There isn't any chance Moyes will choose Jacobsen over Hibbert for next week. I am hugely dissapointed with today's result more so because it came about becuase of inept refereeing and constant diving by Ashley Young. I don't expect MotD2 to highlight this as they are up MON?s arse this year.

My worry for next week is Hibbert not getting any protection in front of him as Osman seems to think playing right midfield means he can spend all game in the centre. I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight tactical switch next week with Neville playing further on the right to cover up Osman being useless out wide in big games.

Please don't anybody come on defending him by using last weeks game v Wigan as a defence for him as that game just sums up his limitations perfectly. Bigger stronger teams just brush him aside and as a right midfielder his positional sense is a joke, we have no outlet on the right because of him.

Don’t know if Ray is right about the indirect free kick for "dangerous play" (at least that’s what it used to be called). But you do get an indirect for a keeper picking up a backpass as well. But even if dangerous play is penalised by a direct free kick I still think the penalty was harsh.

According to a ref in Norway ? who is our international ref, btw ? it?s dangerous play and an indirect free kick if Lescott doesn?t hit Petrov, if he hits him, however, it?s a straight foul and a direct free kick ? which, of course, is a penalty inside the box..

Did Lescott hit him? I don?t know, but he shouldn?t have lost control of the ball that way.

Hey, Jon, you hit the problem right on the head. The balls through the middle, high or low, are far too frequently miscontrolled thus allowing the opposition quick possession back. Arteta apart, we need people who can control the ball quickly and keep possession until other players are in a supporting position.

No doubting the fact we have a had a good season despite the shortcomings but if we are to hope next season that we can match strides with the others above then a lot of things need to happen.

Øystein, that is true. As soon as Lescott?s boot made contact with Petrov?s head, it was always going to be a penalty. Lescott can consider himself a little unlucky as Petrov stepped in at the very last moment to nod the ball away. If anything, maybe the big man was a little clumsy.

Good performance all round I thought with Pienaar and Osman, in my opinion, our most impressive players. Pienaar?s goal has got to be one of the goals of the season ? 16-pass build-up and a peach of a finish!

Howard was our weak link today. Don?t know whether his little niggling injury was hampering him but his failure to command the penalty area was there for all to see. I think this unsettled the rest of our backline. Hopefully, we will be watertight next Sunday.

Nick Xenos ? I think you?ve put your finger right on it regarding our defence and the part Howard played in its uncertainty. One can only imagine (and certainly hope) that it is related to his injury, which was by all accounts rather worse than his appearance today would suggest.

I just don?t rate Villa and so I?m massively pissed that we lost a 2-goal advantage to them. They are the new Leicester, totally a MON team. Looked like being arguably our best performance for a long time. Like Moyes, I am sick not to win. But our defence is usually on the button and we were unsettled today. Be interesting to hear what DM puts that down to.

Arsenal must be creaming themselves.

Sorry but that can't be a pen. If he had slid along the floor and connected with the ball first but then skittled Petrov, it wouldn't be a pen so what's the difference ? he played the ball first right? Sorry I only saw brief highlights on the news so am looking forward to the ?experts? giving their opinion on MOTD.

Was Young's diving that bad ? It seems that this is still abundant in the Prem and as much as I laud Moyes's approach and like to see our players refusing to dive and harangue referees, I do worry that we might sometimes get left behind as other teams (all 19 of them ????) seek to benefit from these ?dark arts?.

What a great match it was. But I have to say Villa almost piss me off just as much as the RS. Ashley Young is a diver and O?Neill is and always will be a clown. Just look at him jumping up and down the touchline. He?s like Phil Scolari Part 2. Ashley Young doesn?t need that diving because he?s a great player. He?s turning into Robben or Suarez.

And the ref? Well, he was one big horror-show. Piss-poor. Fucking disgraceful.

Our worst defensive performance for a while. Hibbert should have been subbed right after his yellow card. Howard was poor today as was Lescott.

But Fellaini, Osman and Pienaar played very well today. Compliments.

Ralph W, unless you are a Villa supporter I am totally mystified as to what Osman did that made you think he played well.

Bloody MOTD, apparently Young didn’t dive, they could’ve been given, Fellaini is all elbows (never mind the treatment he gets or that he might be a decent player too) and finally O’Neill has done well on limited funds just like Moyes (£80m net spend in the last year or two isn’t it??) Glad I watched that....

I don’t think Osman played that badly today. He kept the ball well and started a lot of attacks. The problem is he’s not a wide player. I thought getting Gosling on in place of him in the 2nd half would’ve really helped stretch their defence and relieve a bit of the pressure we were under.

In my opinion we were let down today by our back 5. Aston Villa look like a kind of Stoke City Deluxe. Their whole game plan is get it wide to Milner or that Cheating little twat and then fling it in to Carew in the box. In those type of games the defence have to withstand a lot of pressure and be up for the challenge, today they fell short. Hopefully it’ll be a wake up call for the semi next week.

I try to not let the fools bother me, but absolute shocker from the media today. I suppose because MON has worked for the BBC, they decided to root for Villa this season. Pathetic.

No reference to Young?s diving, no serious examination of their penalty, no examination at all of Jo being bundled over in the area... And finally the ignorant and idiotic comment putting us together with Villa as operating "on limited resources" (right, and my pension will be the same as Fred Goodwin?s).

I really do despise Villa this season. Fine, they get some results sometimes. But despite the media love-in, MON manages no differently than Allardyce, and they have been extraordinarily lucky.

Well, let?s just make sure we finish above them and their vastly over-rated manager, and then the media can spin it however the hell they like.

Very disappointed in getting just the point. Letting a two goal lead slip away twice in one game. We looked to be on the way to a great performance... undone, I think, by Howard not taking control of those in front of him. Have to agree with Ciaran Duff on Jacobsen. Didn?t see MOTD2, but Setanta pisses me off ? that co-commentator hates seeing Everton do well, and always seeems to pick out and revel in our failings. He kept going on about Fellaini?s elbows, and will probably have handed in a VT to the FA straight after the game.

Thrilling game, but would have been great to win. I think a lot of people are being harsh on Villa, but if MOTD did make out MON?s been working on a "limited budget" ? what a joke! Though by definition everyone including Citeh don?t have access to unlimited sums.

The team that started yesterday is the strongest one available to Moyes at the moment and you?d like to think it's the one we start with next week.

Now I know everyone says you shouldn?t change a winning team, but I don?t feel Lescott or the Jags are physically equipped to deal with the John Carew?s / Peter Crouches of this world and I would question Tim Howard?s bravery when facing these guys too. Yobo should be brought in against the big men, and the Jag and Lescott reunited to face the smaller trickier strikers.

Neil Pearce ? Although we are a better team than Villa, we couId learn an awful lot off the park from them. I don?t know if you?ve been to Villa Park lately but it?s a very good example of what should have happened at GP. The crowd appreciate they are a work in progress and generate terrific noise.

I too get annoyed by the over-the-top praise that has been heaped on them... but that won't stop us going about our business. Villa have attracted a wealthy owner, but surely that was down to how well the club was run before hand. Ignore the BBC mate, they?ll be quick enough to kick Villa if they?re down. Save your resentment for more deserving clubs.

ps: Ossie played at least a dozen short crisp accurate passes, sometimes the hardest type of pass to play in a packed midfield, this kept us flowing. I worry about Ossie myself at times, but anyone who says he was shite yesterday, either doesn?t understand the game, or is letting his/her dislike for the little fella cloud their judgement.

Dissapointed at losing 2 points but the defence were not confident for some reason. Lescott let the ball bounce which was his mistake, he should have attacked it before it hit the floor because once it had, he had lost control, not the first time he?s done that this season. Hopefully that was the game to get it out of their system and this weekend they will all be perfect!!

I certainly wouldn?t mess with him ? though I would politely ask him to stop talking about himself in the third person in interviews. Talking about "David Moyes" just makes him sound like a nob ? at least that?s what Chad Schofield thinks.

Dave Wilson ? Fully agree what you?re saying about Villa Park and Ossie make some lovely touches, but he did go through invisible spells and seems incapable of staying out wide (all for wide players cutting in, but he was meant to be on the right), which made us look frequently unbalanced. Though Hibbert would have needed an oxygen mask after getting into the penalty area, and a shame he didn?t latch onto Pienaar?s back heel!

Thought we played really well in the first 25 minutes, as good as we have done all year. We allowed the game, however, to be played at their tempo. We need to get smarter.

Hibbert had a nightmare of a game. But he wasn?t anywhere near as bad as the referee. The free kick outside the box was the worst decision and it came at the worst time. When we go 2-0 up we have to learn to take the sting out of the game and quieten their crowd.

What the team need to do is not sit back when they take the lead, all this does is allow the oppositon to dictate the play.

As for the ?great? Ashley Young, he crossed the ball 15 times and not once did a Villa player get on the end of it (Setanta?s stats).

I think Nash should have started today with next week being the important game and Howard suffering all week. I also think Osman and Hibbert should only be reserves as we have better players in their positions and find it baffling that they are first choice every time.
