MotD2

Comments (36)

Having not seen any of the game today, I have just watched the highlights programme on MotD2 and I am fuming.

Instead of concentrating on the free kick and penalty that led to Villa's 2nd and 3rd goals the "panel" decided to feature the very irritating Ashley Young and then rip poor old Fellaini to pieces.

With regard to Young (who I think is a great player) since he has become more high profile in the past 12 months he seems to spend more and time looking for fouls rather than playing to his obvious ability. The "panel" concentrated on him ripping the back out of Hibbert rather than his dubious attempts to win penalties as he has done on each occasion we have met this season.

With so much action to show it seemed strange the highlights included one of Fellaini's aerial challenges rather than the numerous goal mouth incidents that took place. It was no surprise then that the "panel" then discussed his challenges rather than the dubious decisions that cost us 3 points. The best bit was that they then showed some of his challenges from games that took place over 3 months ago!!

Obviously he is the only player in the Premier League involved in any of this stuff then? Don't get me wrong, he's no angel but there are two sides to this particular story without doubt.

No doubt a certain Mr Bennett will have taken note in time for next week's Semi. What chance that Fellaini sees red next week?

Unfortunately if Felli leads with a swinging elbow he will deserve to see red.

My extended family were worried I might burst a blood vessel having the same rant about Young, so I’m glad it wasn’t just me.

Young should seriously look at taking up spring board or platform diving a la Greg Louganis for 2012 London Olympics. Could win a gold medal or two. As for Fella, I worry that Manure players would rile him up to retaliate and collect a RED card.

The result turned on the free kick for Villa?s second goal. Not only wasn?t it a free kick ? it was a foul by Barry ? but it was in line with Webb?s performance all day.

It seemed to me that Young had been told to get Hibbert sent off? I counted 4 clear dives, and yet he was not even talked to to... so much for O?Neill?s football purity. The referee was biased throughout to say the least ? yes, Fellaini led with his elbow at one point but what about the constant use of the arms by Davies and Knight on Cahill in particular and Felliani himself?

However, we made some of the problems ourselves. Some lovely football ? neat and tidy but just too many give away balls. Several players had very poor games ? Howard, Neville, Osman ? but the main problem we have is knowing how to hold a game and kill it by just keeping possession and finishing teams off. At 2 -0 we had clear opportunities to make it 3 but seemed to dither a little.

The main problem for me is and has been all season is shooting from distance: We don?t. And yet when we do, as Piennar did today, we can score wonderful goals. This is a major criticism and the major culprit is Osman ? he finds space for a shot and then goes into players.

Overall we played some great football yesterday but I was in the end a bit disappointed. But the general play was better than the past few away games. See you at Wembley.

Completely agree Steven. I was waiting for the panel to focus on how their second came from a dubious free kick (by dubious I mean clearly NOT a free kick!) and their third came from a penalty that wouldn't have been a free kick if it was in the centre circle.

Villa didn't come back from 2 goals down, they were handed it by Webb.

Young is English. It?s that simple. When Rooney behaves swings elbows and dives into tackles it?s ?passion? and ?not right but take it away and you lose his brilliance?. However when Ronaldo kicks out it?s petulance, he?s a dirty foreigner, after all.

Fellaini should have walked in my view but to see him singled out for criticism was really frustrating. When was the last time you saw an English player pointed out and criticised for diving?

We see Gerrard do it regularly, Rooney has history of it, Joe Cole too. David Dunn did it just last week to get Palacios sent off.

Wasn?t Ashley Young young player of the season last year? And he?s surely a future England international. So you probably won?t see him criticised for diving anytime soon.

MotD2 experts (ha!) had an agenda: Flag up Fellaini?s "transgressions" for the semi so that he gets a red card... after he?s scored of course.

Chiles had decided before ther Villa game what was to be discussed ? hence nothing about what a wonderful game of football it was, nice though it was to hear of Nevilles spoiling tactics. We?ll never get any credit whilst the meeja are beholden to the Sky4. COYB

I can't agree that Osman had a bad game, I thought he did well for us. Baines was a big dissipontment for me, he failed to get close to Milner all day and hardly managed to stop a cross... at least Hibbo was close enough to Young to foul him.

As for MotD2, Chilles is a joke, as is that program ? just some weird indulgant ego trip for him. It's not balanced journalism and it is unacceptable picking on Fellaini ? what with the likes of Kevin Davis elbowing everyone in sight.

Typical that our guy gets a big public going over the week before the cup semi... BBC Bastards.

Problem is Everton are seen as spoilers rather than praised for the good stuff they play. We are the poor relation that Southerners (BBC) have a real problem with!

For truth, yep the big Fella led with his arm. For truth too, for the past month he has been kicked from pillar to post, dragged to the ground, seen players feign mortal injury when hassled (legit). He is an awkward player, clumsy but not dirty. He is also learning to keep a lid on his frustration which frankly must be an impossible task!

Yesterday, Howard had a shocker, Baines had two wrong feet, Osman didn?t get a look in, Jo looked out of place (but so did Saha when he came on), Neville went AWOL too often. Yet despite that we had then, twice. Let them off the hook.

Ashley Young? disgraceful. His sole intent was a penalty at any cost. His preference to get a penalty and a player (Hibbert) sent off. He should have been booked for diving AT LEAST twice. In a way it would have been good to him come up against a Peter Reid or a Hinchcliffe, he might have gotten his penalty but he would have known he had gotten it fairly (and the three weeks rest that would come while his ankle recovered).

I despise so-called professional players diving and trying to get players booked or sent off. I despise Young and condemn the referee for allowing it.

Villa didn?t deserve a point yesterday, but they were given the opportunity on a plate by a very biased referee.

Roll on Manure...

I agree with the point about "the experts" highlighting Felli?s "arm" swinging a week before the Semi. As much as I?d like to hope that we?re not going to get penalised everytime he or Cahill jump in the air, I?d imagine even if we had the best ref in the world they?ll be receiving freekick after freekick (erm, Colina?!).

However, I can?t agree that Webb was biased. He genuinely is one of the best refs out there, and we could have easily lost both Hibbo and Felliani without us having much of a leg to stand on. Potentially they could have had another penalty (the one where they shot rather than any of Young?s gay flops ? though he never fell without a slight bit of contact, hence he didn?t deserve a yellow himself), and Cahill?s goal could have been have been ruled out for pushing.

I am disappointed that we didn?t win and thay we surrendered a two-goal lead twice! But while Barry fouled our man to win a freekick, saying that Webb?s biased is just wrong and it could have been worse if we had of had a different ref.

Having watched the match live on Swiss TV and listended to a German commentator, the opinion was it was no penalty. Young?s diving was treated with contempt, which is what I did too.

MotD was a farce again. Yes, Fellaini does elbow, but to highlight that just before a semi with Manu is typical. Anyone would think he?s the only one at it.... Maybe they praised Neville because he?s an ex Manc....

Hopefully, Moyes will have a word with the big Fella about it, but I can fully understand Marouane being frustrated by opposition defenders who pull, wrestle, and play-act as soon as he gets near them. He?s a handful and they clearly have trouble dealing with him.

Chad, disagree mate. Time and time again Webb has had awful games. He owes me £70 refund for yesterday?s performance. Young diving time after time, add the hysterical Villa reactions and Webb decided "I gotta give em one pen at some point". Disgrace. If Young?s failed penalty attempts were deemed by Webb to not be penalties, why does he not book Young for simulation?

We scored 3 legit goals. Their first, 2 fouls on Everton players during build up, 2nd from a free kick that was not a free kick (though Tim Howard should have caught it let alone stopped it), 3rd from a pathetic penalty decision.

Webb was what's called a homer in that game.

Christine did you watch the game yesterday? "Neville went AWOL" ? you must be joking. One thing he never does is go AWOL. He spent most of the game covering up for people, mainly Osman, who seemed to think he didn't have to play on the right hand side of midfield. Even MOTD highlighted his constant covering for others.

There was always going to be a pnealty yesterday: constant diving, a noisy crowd appealing for everything and a cowardly referee who was always going to cave in. As somebody pointed out earlier, we never accuse English players, Webb booked Messi in the week when he was clearly fouled yet just kep telling Young to get up for his diving.

Reading some of these comments, I think I am going to be a little controversial here.

I thougt, for the most part, we played well yesterday. Osman was sharp and lively again. Cahill was a constant thorn in Villa?s side and Pienaar was his usual busy self and added two very good attempts and Neville was Man of the Match. I thought Hibbo had a stinker, but Baines was okay. His pass for Felli?s opener was quality.

I also thought Jo had his best game away from Goodison for us. He never really looked like scoring, but he linked the play very well and chased a few lost causes down. He can do better then he did, but you can see the confidence he has at Goodison starting to creep into his away game. What price his first away goal being the first Everton winner at Fulham in 43 years, in his last Everton appearance?

Two points I won?t disagree with: Howard had a stinker! And the referee was wrong on two counts.

The pen should have been given as an indirect free kick for dangerous play, as Lescott was attempting to play the ball and caught the man, plus Petrov was not in possession of the football when Lescott caught him. What is it about Petrov and wrong peno decisions against us this season? I still maintain I would rather have had the pen in the cup game, as if Petrov had got sent off for the handball he would have been suspended for the next three games and Villa could have dropped more points. We could have gone 5 or 6 points clear in fifth yesterday.

The free-kick was nonsense and couldn?t have come at a worse time for us. Had Villa not been given that free-kick and we had managed to keep them off the scoresheet for another 10 minutes we would definitely have seen the game out and possibly gone on to get a fourth.

I still don?t think 4th is out of reach. I had us down to draw this one and still finish level on points with Arsenal, although their goal difference will be the problem.

I feel I wasn't the only one who felt pretty short-changed after the post-match analysis on MotD2. Aside from the previously mentioned Fellaini-bashing, and then the glossing over of Young (who I personally feel is rather over rated), I wanted to concentrate on the preception of our club ? an issue that has frustrated me for a while now.

While I think it's great that Steve Claridge and Mark Bright feel we are "hard-working," where was the mention of some of our flowing football today? Ok, towards the end we had our backs to the wall a bit, but some of the football going forward was top class, culminating in the Pienaar goal.

On the whole I thought we looked a better team on the deck than Villa, who seemed to be focussing on launching it forward and getting Hibbert sent off. Yet the early season lauding of Villa's football seems to have placed us in some "Bolton-esque" category of tough and hard-working ? good facets of our game but not the only ones. This is made even more annoying by the talk of similar amounts of money being splashed around by both teams (where's our American billionaire???). You can add to that the injuries ? I'd love to see Villa play without Carew and Young, as well as some fringe players the way we have had to.

Let's just hope at the end of the year we can look back and laugh at the media darlings, and push on even more. Great performance yesterday whatever the analysis, bring on the Mancs, and COYB!

I think it?s fair to say that Fellaini will have the sword of Damocles hanging over him on Saturday. No doubt that the officials will have his card marked even before he steps on the field. He will be booked at the very least, no doubt about that. and a red is a strong possibility.

I think Moyes could help allieviate this threat by going public and criticize MotD2 for unfairly highlighting this when many other players in the EPL are equally robust in the air. By offering his fears that Maroune will be singled out after this trail by television, he could put the officials in the spotlight and take the pressure off the big Fella.

Villa?s tactics all season have been to lump the ball forward for their fast men and big forwards. No finesse at all. Yesterday they added the obvious MON tactic of getting Hibbert carded by Young diving from the kick-off. What a charming team!

It would be okay if they were accuately regarded by the media as a rather brutish Allardyce team or like Pulis?s Stoke. But after in footballing terms playing them off the park for the third time this season, MotD choose to highlight Pip?s spoiling, Fellaini?s arms, and our ?hardworking? (on this occasion we had again passed them off the pitch). And of course the wonderful A Young, with no mention that he should have been carded for diving on at least three occasions yesterday, and made Ronaldo look like a saint.

Well, the BBC have a story about Villa (footballing team with great manager about to break the top 4), and a different story about Everton (hardworking journeymen with hardworking manager, barely hanging on) ? and they are sticking to them both. Even if they have to handpick and distort the evidence to do so.

The co-commentator here in SA was ex Villa manager John Gregory. He was almost doubled up with frustrated laughter at Webb?s refusal to book A Young. Gregory also pointed out Agbonlahor?s similar behaviour.

Regarding Webb, I commented several months ago that he has started to believe his own publicity and is rapidly turning into the new Poll. After yesterday?s shocker, I suggest that the metamorphosis is complete.

The commentators in the game did actually mention Ashley Young?s blatent diving and compared it to Ronaldo. They also said that if he falls over often enough he?s bound to get a result from one of them. Which was born out later in the game when he got a few unwarranted fouls.

On a similar note, the commentator on the Fulham game mentioned AJ and his reputation as a diver during his time at Everton. So, even though Moyes proved that AJ deserved many penalties that he didn?t get, he?s still tarred with the brush while bigger culprits like Gerrard and Young get away with it.

For part of the game, I had on the BBC R5 commentary with Graham Taylor ? which turned into a bit of an unintended Monty Python sketch:

"Howard Webb is really the best referee we have now... Oh, but that was a mistake... Oh, and another mistake by the ref... Young should really be booked for his persistent diving... That penalty seems very harsh...." etc. etc..

In the end Taylor was close to: "Webb is the best referee we have but today he is rubbish". When do we get to doubt the first part of this sentence?

Kunal ? They are a couple of no-mark ex players.

There is no way on gods green earth that was a penalty, Lescott showed no intent to foul the player and he didn?t touch him anyway. As Alasdair rightly points out, Petrov was not in control of the ball plus when Lescott stretches to kick it there is no Villa player in his eyeline.

Still, after all that, I am not sure we would've seen the game out and held on at 3-2 as the pressure was relentless.

Feliani is a major threat to Man Utd so the BBC, who love the Big 4, are acting as any bankrupt and corrupt organisation does, putting out propaganda. The facts are that elbows are attached to arms which are part of the human body and used to gain momentun in jumping and sometimes, as with all things in a conatct sport occasional they meet with a head.

What cannot be denied is that Mike Riley will not penalise Rooney or Ronaldo so Fellaini will have to go on to Wembley with his arms tied behind his back. The BBC are being true to past form and as you will recall chose a crappy Man Utd goal over a brillaint EFC goal for goal of the season (remember McFadden)

Sean ? Exactly my point: those two clowns analysing our games, they?ve not played enough top-flight football between the two to even analyse Sunday League football nevermind the PL.

The game itself, it was disappointing to let a two-goal lead slip twice. You have to hold your hands up to Milner ? it was a great free-kick and as for the pen, some days they are given and some days they aren?t. At least we can say we scored three well-worked goals compared to theirs ? only one from open play which was scrappy.

I did actually watch the game on Setanta and one statistic made in the second half was that Young had attempted 7 crosses with a 0% completion rate. Add that to the fact that the sulky genius-in-his-own-mind spent the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half blatantly trying to get Hibbo sent off.

Rubbish, Bright ? you are worse than Andy Townsend on ITV and Young you should concentrate on playing football and beating opponents fairly ? a smile on your face wouldn?t go amiss but that is definitely a step too far! Makes you appreciate Hansen, Lawrenson and Dixon etc!
