Just watched the Chelsea game and thought if anything we should have won. Jo had at least two clear cut chances which he should have buried, we had a penalty shout, Baines was the best player on the pitch, and Chelsea just couldn't handle Pienaar.

I think we have nothing to fear for the final, as long as we put in a similar display, especially with the likes of Fellaini, Jags, Vaughan and Saha available.

PS Also though Jacobsen had a good game and deserves at least another 1 year contract.

Some glorious chances squandered... Jo has to be the most maddening of forwards... whereas Chelsea were incredibly restricted to just one.

Another brilliant defensive display... Wish I had some appreciation for defensive football but for me it's a bit much when our poor play going forward with the ball is of no concern because its purposes seems to be to provide yet another opportunity for the Boys to demonstrate their unbeatable defensive prowess. I just hope Moyes hasn't tipped his hand for 30 May...

Cahill must be knackered, let?s rest him for one or even 2 games, play him in the final splurge to get him bang into form for the final.

Getting player to peak condition for 30/05/2009 must be the priority from noe until we pick up that cup.

Half-time. Very satisfied with our performance so far.

Re: the penalty shout - the ball ricochets off Alex?s leg before he trips up Baines - maybe that sowed the seed of doubt in the refs mind? Either way, ?twas still a pen.

Tonight?s performance can be summed up by the banner at Wembley featured on BBC Sport today: "Superman wears Tim Cahill pyjamas". The guy has been immense this half. His all-round game has vastly improved this season.

Can see us sneaking this. We are getting the better chances and perhaps should be ahead. Would love JV on for the last 20 and really rough up Terry and Alex. Amazing really what missing Carvalho does for that defence.

One final note, Castillo can be proud of that first half display. Simple passes, nothing silly and shoring that midfield up nicely. Hope he keeps this up.

A most excellent result.

Howard?s performance at Wembley has done him a world of good. Looks very confident.

We have the best defence in the land.

Pienaar and Baines continue their dangerous sweeps down the left. If only we could create anything down the right we could really stretch teams. Pip again assured in holding mid; had to pull back after that ridiculous yellow card. Castillo a revelatory performance. Osman very anonymous today.

Tim kept that engine going all day. I don?t think Jo was entirely dire; should have scored on that breakaway. Seems to think his right leg is only to keep himself from falling over.

Good result tonight, we could have won if we would have took our chances but considering Sunday's game and four players rested, very happy with tonight. Thought Jo played well as a hold up striker but and it's a big but for a forward his finishing was poor. The best I've seen him away from home though, must be the cameras on him.

Jo wasn?t that bad in my opinion. His runs were very good, his timing was very good (rarely given offside). He moved across the forward line, playing the lone role very well, linking up with both Ossie and Pienaar on the flanks when required. Yes, he should have scored or squared it on the first chance. Second chance he lost his footing, very unfortunate and he will hold his hands up I?m sure. His other chance was a half chance at best, it was too far from him, but he certainly caused the best defence in the country problems. I honestly think that given time he could be an exellent football player. £10mil or under I would go for it (if we have £10mil to spend on a striker that is).

I though Castillo and Jacobsen were very good also, I would be tempted to Jacobsen a second contract, as from his performances thus far have been promising, and it would save having to spend/search for an alternative, whilst also having that Irish lad as back-up when he gets injured (which seems to be often).

Cahill was top draw, proved he can play that centre mid role against Ballack and Lampard and be superior. I think Next season for our Tim could be exellent, keep using him in this role, he?ll prove to be a complete midfielder.

Baines proved he is twice the player Cole is. By far the best left back in the country.

Pienaar was good, just that final ball needs tweaking.

Ossie was good in spells, notably one moment of excellent control and pass (honestly cant quite remember who to) but a bit in and out of the game.

Defense was solid, but Joey seems a bit uncomfortable, Lescott Jags is without doubt the most solid.

Neville was Neville.

Howard need to learn how to kick a ball, other than that very solid, with good saves when mattered.

All in all, I was very pleased with the performance, especially considering Sunday and the lack of Jags and Fellaini. Also, Chelsea are most definately beatable in that final.

Increasingly difficult to listen to the commentary at these games, its almost like we didn?t turn up. We outplayed them at times and had the greater chances yet there were times when we were rippng them apart and completely ignored ? but why are we surprised?

Some bewildering decisions by the ref ? the players are saints to not let this effect them ? and where did the lads get the energy from tonight ? after thinking Castillo should have been taken off after 20 minutes, once he got some confidence he looked class with great turns and interceptions. They badly need that one win against the Sky Four to give them belief but a great performance tonight that could easily have seen us win it. Stunning really after Sunday's efforts.

Great performance from the lads. Very unlucky not to take more from the game. Brilliant defensively and the workrate from the team as a whole must be the envy most other premiership managers.

I thought Jo, apart from his finishing had a very good game, his best showing away from Goodison by a mile. He held the ball up well, worked hard and his movement is exceptional. However the business end for every striker is finishing the chances they get. Good save from Cech for the first and he slipped for the 2nd. He also had a good chance in the 2nd half ? he most certainly should have put one of them away.

I personally thought Jo had some very good runs tonight, but as Stan says the business end for a striker is goals and he should have put one of his three away tonight.

Just to compare, Arshavin last night had four attempts, four on target and four goals, and none of them were easy at all, and I think he cost about £5 million less than Jo!!

A very encouraging performance tonight with Baines displaying superhuman energy how he runs up an down the left flank is incredible, and to top iy off he beat Drogba in the air near the end a guy who has about 7 or 8 inches on him in height.

Ian Kearney ? For years I thought of Yobo as one of the greatest defenders in the league. Last season and the season before, every single high ball in the box seemed to meet his head. His reading of the game was absolutely exceptional, and apart from the 1 or 2 miss placed passes a season, he was unbeatable. Last season in our defense was exceptional because of him, while Lescott got the plaudits due to his goal.

I always thought of Yobo as Everton future captain, been here 6-7 years now, he will most definitely get a well deserved testimonial match.

However this season he has been below his high standards. As show tonight. Yes, we got a clean sheet, he also made some very well timed interceptions.

However, he gave away 2 poor free kicks, which top defenders should not do. He gave the ball away very poorly on one occasion that I can remember, just hitting it into a chelsea players chest. Also seemed out of position in one or 2 chelsea attacks.

Yes, he has had little match practice this season. And I imagine his pre-season family kidnapping will have a serious effect on him, I know it would if it was me.

However, I do feel that Lescott and Jags is more reliable and stable. Hopefully next season Yobo will come back better than ever, because I feel he has the attributes (pace, strength, height and excellent reading of the game) to be one of the best defenders in Europe, but his performances this season have not shown this. And while he was good today, he could most definitely be better.

Considering our Sunday exertions and the strength and motivation of our opponents, this was an excellent performance. Despite Drogba's late strike, we had the better chances and should, in all honesty, put one of them away.

The defence was outstanding yet again, with Baines really catching the eye. In midfield, Osman and Piennar looked a bit knackered, but Castillo ? who I've previously not rated ? was excellent, both defensively and even in his distribution. Up front Jo linked the play well, but was woeful in his attempts on goal. Cahill put himself about to his usual good effect.

Though we had our backs to the wall for some of the time, this was not a hoofball display. When we could, we passed it around and that's how we carved out a number of chances.

All in all ? a job well done.

I really don?t think Jo will be with us next year in fact I hope he is not, I also cannot see Saha being at the club for too much longer either, he offered little at Wembley and offers very little most of the time. When Yakubu is fit and Vaughn reaches full fitness there will only be room on the bench for a back up striker...

The real positives from the last two games have been our defensive effort, I really thought that we could be on the end of a hiding after the semi final but the boys were up for it again.

It goes to show that Moyse has us on the right track, though we really need a special player in midfield who shows flair ability and bravery, a real ball winner who is not afraid of big name teams.

On another note, I agree with Simon, Jacobsen looked very solid and I think Moyes should consider bringing him on for another year.
Biggest positive taken away today was the fact we kept a clean sheet against them which should benefit the squad in terms of confidence, it was an exceptional defensive performance, especially considering Jags was not involved until late on.

i think it was a good decision by Moyes not to use his subs as now Guus hasn’t had a look at how his defence would cope with Saha or Vaughan on 30 May. we were doing well with just Jo up front and had the much better chances of the game, just didn’t put them away. there was no real reason to take Jo off. he kept slipping and sliding all over that pitch, would you really want to have risked Saha picking up a twist or a strain on a pitch like that? same for Vaughany.

I was at Stamford Bridge last night, and we played really well, especially if you consider how knackered our players are/looked.

Chelsea have had more time to recover from a less taxing game at the weekend, and though they pretty much bossed the midfield ? especially in the first half, we definitely made the better chances and in truth probably should?ve won the game.

Having said that, as a defensive unit there?s not many better teams in the Premier League and lets not forget, all the great teams are built on a sound defence.

This squad really does have the potential to do something exciting in the coming years and thats testament to David Moyes and his staff making shrewd buys and instilling a sense of real belief in the players.

If Jo & Pienaar had taken their chances last night, we?d have scored 3 to their 1 - restricting Chelsea to John Terry taking pot-shots with his left foot from 30 yds is not to be underestimated I can assure you.

Great result for us, and in an odd way its good that we frustrated them to a 0-0 draw rather than beating them. It gives us the belief that we can turn them over (how many draws is that against them now?), plus it shows them that defensively we?re tough and that we can create more than them.

Baines was immense last night, nobody got round him, not once, and even Yobo apart from one dodgy clearance played well. Jacobsen looks a better player than Hibbo, I just hope he?s not badly injured and Lescott was Lescott, nuff said.

All in all it was a fine performance, and coming back to Goodison this weekend, they all deserve one hell of a homecoming cheer!

Up the blues.

Fran, after Ossie showed that nice piece of ball control and skill in the second half, he fed Jacobsen who had launched a run down the flank. The Dane crossed for Cahill, who in turn set up Pienaar perfectly but the little man skewed his shot wide. For what it’s worth, I thought Castillo was the game’s MOM last night. From about the 30th minute onwards, he didn’t put a single foot wrong - perfectly timed tackles and accurate passing. More of the same please Mr Castillo. Just a special mention about Steven Pienaar. I think he is really hitting top form just at the moment. I think that Villa goal has given him an extra spark and can see him being a key player for us in the run-in and the final.

Michael,

Are you ever satisfied? We went to the home of one of the best sides in Europe, who’ve lost about 2 games in I don’t know 50/60??? - get a draw and nearly win and you moan about us being defensive, ffs! Yes, at times Chelsea did dominate possesion and we had to defend well. When you play at the home of such a good team and when we have rested players and have a few key players out injured, this is going to happen. What was good is firstly, that we defended very well, something to be proud of and secondly, when we attacked we passed the ball well and made some good chances, with some poor finishing and some good saves from PC. Did you honestly think it’d be Everton doing all the attacking and having Chelsea on the back foot???

You make out Everton do nothing but defend. At home against most sides we attack a fair bit. Away, we soak it up more, etc. - not exactly unusual in football. We could attack for 88 minutes and defend for 2 minutes and you’d still probably moan about us defending too much. Why not just get rid of the defence, just have midfielders and attackers? If you want fast flowing football more frequently, go and support Arsenal as it seems you will never be happy and constantly moan

Overall, I was a touch unhappy that we didn’t win, but fairly happy with the performance. All those players out, Chelsea had a full strenght side and we contained them with out any problems and created some good chances, which on another day will go in. Bring on the Cup Final!!!!

Damien, my comments simply reflected that overall, I was a touch unhappy we didn’t win. That’s Okay for you, of course but not Okay for me???

In a way it was proably better that we didn’t win to be honest ? I hate to say that but think in a way that would have made the final that much more difficult.

This "resolute defence" stuff is fantastic when it comes off and you prevent the other side from scoring. The problem arises when you make just one mistake... or perhaps it’s not even a mistake ? you do everything you can but a brilliant strike or brilliant combination play beats even the best defense.

I believe that’s possible: it just worries me that Moyes ? now more than ever ? believes we should always keep a clean sheet and then nick one if we can... or rely again on penalties. That’s far too often how we appear to play when we have possession.

It seems the corollary ? as exemplified in our game at Villa ? is that, if we play our best football when in possession and going forward, we inevitably loose shape for the counter and inevitably let in goals. Moyes absolutely hates that. Ergo: no free-flowing forward play, even if we are capable of it.

Our football at the moment really is knife-edge stuff, it can so easily go either way: elation or desperation...

Fair play to you Michael. I love to see us going forward a lot too and yes there was some great stuff against Villa. There are games when we do defend more than some of us would like (me included), but sometimes when a side is at you like there’s no tomorrow it is difficult to get out of this and get up attacking (some sides are simply too good for us!!!).

You talked about how Moyes just wants to ’nick one’. During some away games and against some of the sky 4 , this is probably true. But as I said there are many games when we are not content on just nicking one and we attack a fair bit and score a decent number of goals. I don’t think you give Moyes and the boys credit for this or acknowledge it either.

You cited the Villa game, but you seem to make out that it hardly ever happens and that we defend heavily for virtually every game. I disagree and the evidence backs that up. How many games have we won by more than 1 goal? I don’t know the answer to that, but I suspect it is a fair few. How many games have we scored more than 1 goal? Again, I suspect it is a fair few. Even against Chelsea when we defended quite a lot (sometimes not our choice as they came at us a lot), we still created chances and should have scored a few, on another day we might have won 2-0!!!

My opinion is that the most frequent display we see is a bit of defending (when required) and a fair bit of attacking. Here’s hoping we strike the right balance in the Cup Final, a bit of good defending when required and some good attacking play resulting in somone bursting the net!! COYB.
