Owen Again

Comments (46)

Surely not? According to the BBC Sport site we are interested in signing Michael Owen who is prepared to take a drop in salary ? big deal! This guy is well past his best and he is seldom fit enough to play. He may have been a blue in his younger days but that is hardly a reason to be going in for him now.

Rumours abound that we are interested in a certain M Owen. Assuming he would accept a 50% salary cut (at least), do we really want another sick note on our books?

Owen, as usual, will get himself ready for the World Cup 2010.
That means he will want to play as many games as he can next season.
I am sure Moyes is well aware of that and may take the risk.
Owen is ruthless enough, as has been seen in the past, regarding ’World Cup year’ and when fit, Owen is deadly.

Paul I think I would rephrase that into

"Owen is dead"

The worst player to sign is an aging has been who is totally injury prone and on his fading star.

He also does not fit in with Moyes philosophy of buying young to develop.

Surely it all depends on the deal? If the barcodes go down and he can be picked up for £5m and he can fit into our wage structure, then why not? He’s only 29, so surely there are three good years left in him. I wouldn’t mind him coming to play for us one bit.

A friend of mine is a blue and lives in Durham now - he told me last week that it was all over the press up there that there is a huge chance Owen was on his way to Everton.
Big fat signing on fee and about £50k per week has been mooted bearing in mind he is on a free at the end of the season.

Tim

It really doesnt depend on the deal as far as I am concerned. Owen is a crock at the tail end of a career that started off dazzling but quickly faded into injury-laden mediocrity. £5 million spent on Owen is £5 million wasted. And wages-wise the onyl way we should ever take him is on a pay-as-you-play basis.

Id hope the club get him on a ’nothing up front deal’. Make him earn the signing on fee aswell as his wages! He will want to play in the world cup and has made his money, so hopefully the 2 parties would be able to come up with something equally beneficial, but also not a massive gamble on Evertons part.

No matter how good he is at getting himself ready for world cups, he’s way behind that ability compared with Darren Anderton and Harry Kewell... Kewell even bagged a CL final spot!

Where does the figure of £5m to sign him come from. Is Mr Owen not available on a "Bosman" at the end of the season? Maybe he will cost £50k a week in wages and a hefty signing on fee. It is not as big a gamble as some may think.

Owen is only 29, not 39 and there is life in him yet. I remember a certain washed up scotsman signing at the grand old age of 29 in 1984, they said he had a dazzling start to his career and it had fizzled out. Could Owen be the new Andy Gray? The experience we need to help us step up a level. Also such a signing would raise our international profile and should see us recoup his wages as a result.

Neil: agreed, Owen would be a gamble because of his injuries. But surely if we could squeeze 25 league games a season out of him for three years he would be able to get 10-15 league goals, which surely would be worth £5 million. Let’s have some perspective here - we sold AJ for over £10 million. He was effectively our back up striker last season, as Cahill was playing off the Yak. Owen would pretty much be the same role, but at £5 million would represent better value than someone like Jo, would offer better goalscoring pedigree and offer us another true poacher in the box who (despite his injuries) is still very quick, especially over the first 10 yards.

Personally though I don’t think it would happen, as I agree that he’s not a "Moyes"-type signing, but if we did get him for a decent price and on sensible wages I would be more than happy to welcome him with open arms.

His connections to Liverpool don’t bother me one bit - Peter Beardsley was our best player for 2 seasons at the start of the ’90s and Gary Ablett won a cup winner’s medal for us just to cite two recent examples. The only thing that would concern me are his injuries, but like I say, if the deal is structured right and we had enough money still for other key signings I would think it’s a gamble worth taking.

If we can pick up Owen on a free I think it should be a definite purchase. World Cup next year and Owen will want to earn his ticket to South Africa. He is a good team player and would fit in with our existing squad, maybe teaching young Vaughn a few tricks. If Newcastle go down we should definitely look at strip mining their squad of any talent.

More When than If newcastle go down!

I can see this going through actually... not sure how I feel about it as I grew up with owen regularly scoring against us for Liverpool!

He?s by no means finished though and if a chance fell to him in the box 9 out of 10 times he will score. My worry would be will he get those chances at Everton!? We don't create much for the forwards as it is and owen doesnt have the pace to run the channels like the rest of our strikers anymore.

Now if we signed a good winger & Owen, that's a different story!

No fee, a three year deal, half his wages?

Not for me.

This is a feller who at 18, 19, 20, 21, scored loads of goals because he almost always had a yard on the defender.

He?s now 29 and these days, the defender is just as likely to get there first.

Also he?s no Tevez or Rooney, chasing back to help out.

Seems to me (a generalisation I know) that strikers like Teddy Sheringham (who never really had pace) seem to find it easier to continue playing on and scoring, while strikers like Lineker (and this feller) are a busted flush once the pace goes.

Personally I wouldn?t give the dull, mercenary little get, house room.

I wish this would go away.

He is being linked because:

1) He is out of contract
2) He still lives in North West and Everton are the highest placed team in North West that would possibly sign him (top 4 wouldn’t too him)
3) Newcastle are sh*te and he won’t be staying.

Owen is not going to be joining us. Firstly we cannot afford anywhere near his wages and some daft second rate premiership team will pay him silly money.

Even if we came up with the money, we cannot afford to have another injury prone player at the club. Especially one whose on a lot of money.

He’s past it and not worth paying silly wages.

Some people need to be realistic

On a Free with sensible wages he’d be worth the gamble.

He is a good finisher and with a doubt how quickly Yak will pick up his game, it would not be such a bad idea.

Of course with Yak, Saha, Anichebe, Vaughan and Owen you would have 5 forwards all with an injury doubt over their heads. On the other hand they all have something to prove in different ways and that is always the best way to get good performances out of any player.

And if they are all injured we would still have Mighty Tim Cahill to step in!

I’d take owen on those terms (no fee, 50k wages) in a heartbeat.

I’m sure there could a percentage "pay as you play" clause.

Whatever peoples thoughts, owen is the only "fox in the box" currently in the premiership. He knows where the goal is, and given a fair chance in a good side, will easily score 1 in 2 games he plays. He may play 15 games in a season, he may play 25.

But who would you rather have on the bench - big vic, or owen?

And we’ve had VDM on the books for 3 years for not too dissimilar a financial burden I’m sure. Even the pessimistic amongst you would agree that Owen would be more of a participant and better value...

No, don’t get him. For £50,000 a week invest it in at least one winger.

In this countfry we need to laugh. this is the Everton way of life.

Let's do it, let's talk about the real Everton issues but lets do it with some form of humour that will encaptivate all those people who read this amazing website (dont forget all the other teams websites such as my supervisors Bolton that they never get gotta say. I am from Southport and have met (through music) many scousers and have found them the most funniest, off the cuff people I?ve ever met

If and it is a big if ,he stays fit his goalscoring record is impressive! There is also the chance that he force his way back into the England team. Shirt sales alone would contribute significantly to his wages, never mind the increase in the worldwide Everton profile.

Sell Anichebe and get Owen, Owen is is still a goal scorer who has a few years in the tank and could help with bringing Vaughan on a little. I don?t have alot of faith in Victor, wrong attitude of late and not convinced he could score regularly if they let him goal hang and tied the goalie to the post.

Cant see it myself - it would require too much of a tactical change to accomodate him, also even at half of his barcode wages he would still be one of the top-earners at the club, and once the Yak is fit again he wouldnt get anywhere near the starting eleven.

The money would be better spent on someone to take Osman’s place, and maybe a Hibbert replacement as well.

Owen?s an option but he better produce the goods because I can?t stand him - falls over too easily, too self-centred, whistles through his teeth and probably votes Tory. It?s us or Wigan, I reckon, so get him on a free, as in ?that?s what he plays for?. MInd you, if he stiffs the Shite...

Total backward step not at all in keeping with what Moyes is building. No more Gazzas or Ginolas (or Sahas for that matter)! Just silly. I’d rather continue with Cahill and Fellaini up front. Or give Baxter a try. Or even sign Nugent.

We now are all about committed players who really want to play for the club over a number of years. Owen is a has been mercenary who could only damage team morale. And he probably wouldn’t score much either.

EJ, I totally agree with your assessment.

He?s a one trick pony who relied on his pace and GREED to score a sackful when he was younger.

He cannot be compared to Andy Gray who despite his obnoxious media presence was a great footballer who could knock them in using anything ---- head, shoulders, left foot, right shin, left knee etc.

For me he is not a team player and has lost his main asset- speed.

Going back to my point. Some people need to get realistic.

One poster even claimed (Jeremy Benson) that Van der Meyde was of a similar financial burden to Owen. Owen is on a reported £140k per week at Newcastle. Van Der Meyde won?t be on more than £20k per week absolute maximum, so how on earth are they even slightly close. The top salary at Everton is around £45k per week.

Is Owen going to take £50k per week on a 1 year deal ? Absolutely no way. The lad is mercenary. When there?s talk of him taking a pay cut I thnk that means to maybe £100k. There are plenty of clubs that will give it to him. People like Owen don?t need accept deals on a clubs terms. He dictates.
We are one that definitely won?t and shouldn?t anyway.

I don’t want Moyes to sign Owen - That’s the short response.

Slightly longer:
More often than not, Owen scores goals when he’s on the pitch and has still has a pretty good record. I think Owen does still have it. (Did I just say that out loud?)

The issue is that Michael WILL get injured and he WILL miss lots of matches - there is no doubt and that is the very reason I don’t want him to sign. There’s no point in having another sicknote on the books especially when the front line is the very place we desperately need to strengthen with a consistent and reasonably high number goal scorer.

Michael simply doesn’t fit that bill and will end up being like Saha.

I think if we get him I’m sure Moyes will be bearing everything in mind and get us the right deal given his injury record.

He is a similar player to saha in many respects; top international quality, but injury prone. Personally I dont think it will happen. I can see Moyes wanting another pay as you play deal and I doubt Owen - given his mercenary tendancies - will be inclined to accept.

Personally I’d much rather see Moyes buy a right sided midfielder/winger with genuine pace and class. For me cahill has always looked a better player as a 2nd striker. Fellaini has also looked better playing up front, and we have yak, saha, vaughan and(if needs be) anichebe who can do a job. Our resources in midfield by comparison are severely lacking.

Bearing all that in mind I’d be really surprised if Moyes used any significant part of our budget for a striker next season.
