So today's Mirror has Michael Owen on his way to Goodison for a £50k a week salary package.
If this is true then Moyes lost his head completely! This serial sicknote will totally undermine all the good work 'our man' has done in putting together a group of hard-working, non-posing players who have brought a bit of respectability back to our club.
Owen's thirty goals over four seasons at Newcastle cost the Barcodes no less than £700,000 a piece and proved once and for all that he really is 'the finished article'.
Please, Mr Moyes, you can do far better that this ? SURELY!

Brian, do yourself a favour this summer and don’t believe a word the red-tops say about Moyes’s transfer targets. They’ve got a whole summer without an international tournament to write about, so they’ve got pages to fill with guff.
It would wreck the red shites head but..
Pretty unlikely to come off, but Valente & VDM’s wages would be what, 40grand combined? And Owen would play more matches in a season than those two just have... and Pistone, Gravesen, Anthony Gardner the season before. ’Can’t say I’m bothered either way on Michael Owen, but with Moyes buying a lot of promising youngsters, I can see him taking a punt on Owen to balance out the squad.
if we sign owen then im gonna plae the biggest bet ive ever placed (admittedly not an amount to break the bank) on us winning the uefa cup.. he’ll be the real deal.. he knew he wanted to come to us last time he moved it just would cause too many problems because of how close that was to him being at liverpool, he’s all paid up now so the time is right for him to come and produce all those skills he’s been saving up for us.. a top five signing for a top five team, if anyone can get the best out of him its got to be the man like moyesy and lets face it if you can get the best out of michael owen you have got the best in the world, i really hope this is for real
It’s lazy journalism.
He lives in Cheshire, we’re his boyhood club, we have no money for transfers (but can afford 50k a week apparently) and had documented striker problems this season.
It ignores that he’s way past his best, can’t play in our preferred formation and isn’t a Moyes-type player (in the sense that his legs have gone and has nothing to his game beyond goals and isn’t particularly noted for his work ethic or team cohesion) Plus the wage demands.
50k per match, on a pay-as-you-play basis would be worth it. However, 50k per week regardless of appearances is too much to risk. Lets face it, he has hardly been a model of injury-free consistency in his entire career!
Owen, Jonny Wilkinson and Freddie Flintoff. It seems each of our major ball sports has a potentially world-beating player warming the treatment table more than playing.
Shame.
It is MUCH too late for Owen and it smacks of Ginola, Gascoigne type signings long after their sell by dates. He flopped at Newcastle and has lost pace and is now a bit-part player on the way down. I hope that DM comes out and completely quashes that rumour as it is definitely a retrograde step.
We should have bought Ginola BEFORE he went to Spurs and that was a huge mistake, please do not give Owen any lifelines as he is not worth a place at EFC and would be a kick in the teeth to our youngsters.
I think we need to get rid of quite a few players who are currently on the payroll and bring in some fresh young players to really push for places in the first team squad. Martins would be a much better buy from Newcastle than Owen as he does work hard and would have more impact even though I think we need better players than he is.
The players I would hope we would not sign include Barton, Owen, Nolan and Smith who are either past it or troublesome characters. We need some top players to boost our present squad and take the places of the likes of Osman, Hibbert and Saha who are not good enough or fit enough to play as automatic first choices.
His injuries are one thing, I have a worry about him fit.
When he was younger, his ability (because of his speed) to get in front of defenders, meant goals were almost guaranteed... A low ball in the box, Owen gets ahead of some big slow puddin? of a centre-half and it was WHIZZ-BANG-GOAL.
Last time time I saw him, HE looked like... well, a big slow puddin? actually.
So... um... not for me.
I always remember watching Owen during 2001, and thinking "here we have the most potent forward in the world", see for yourselves as Owen took Arsenal, Germany, and many others to the sword in what was arguably the little so-and-so?s pinnacle season since bursting on to the scene in 1997.
If only we had the services of Owen of then... impossible I know, but I think that would be the difference between also rans and actual silverware.
If he does turn up It would be interesting to say the least.
He has had a rough time at Newcastle (a graveyard for decent players), but if Moyes thinks he is worth a punt, then I'd trust him. Owen will have loads to prove and will want to get in the World Cup squad, so Everton would be a perfect, stable, in-Europe club for him to go to and really knuckle down. I would still hope though that, as he is a free agent, Moyes would have him down Finch Farm for a couple of weeks first for our fitness team to give him a real good going over! £50k a week is still a risky sum to throw away.
I think that if it meant we could spend a big wad of sterling on a decent right winger/midfielder then it would be worth the gamble. One thing to bear in mind is that he does seem to have a good season when it is a World Cup or Euro Championship season.
A lot of people say that Moyes never takes a risk, Owen could be a risk worth taking with money spent else where.
Use him as much as he would us, he will busting his gut to try and get into the World Cup squad and why not give him a 2 year or year by year deal.
I don’t care either way, if he comes, good we have an experienced forward who will chip in a few goals a season and is better on his worst days than Anichebe on a normal day. If he doesn’t no loss.
Brian a couple of tips for lowering the blood pressure.
Don’t buy shit papers like the Mirror
Don’t read shit papers like the Mirror
Don’t open any threads which start talking about possible transfer targets.......from shit papers like the Mirror
Oh yee of little faith! Just remember,we said all the same things when Davey signed Krøldrup and Van the Sham.
Moyes can do no wrong so just leave it to him!.
I dont think it would be such a bad signing for free, he?s only 29 and if we could get him fully fit which im sure we could i think he would be a good signing, a fit Owen in a good side would do well, I'd much rather have him in the side than Saha. Owen wouldn't have missed that header on Saturday, he?d have buried that and maybe won us the Cup?!!.
I just hope Moyesy gets some serious backing this summer because were going to need it, Man City are already in the market trying to buy Barry so they're not hanging around and are building to push for top 6, possibly top 4 next year. It's a big summer for Everton FC, I don't see why the Board can't back him this summer after what he?s achieved. I saw an article saying we received a total of £50m in TV money and parachute payments alone this season, and then there?s the £30m + kitbag deal on top of that, new kit deal, money from final league standing and the cup run, so surely some of that will be given to Moyesy this summer?!!
Hopefully he gets the backing to make at least 3, possibly 4 quality signings that will make a difference to are side, I'd like to see him get Moutinho in for starters, M?Bia for holding midfield role, get Owen in too. Maybe a pacey out-and- out right winger and a few squad players but it all depends on how much the board are willing to back Moyes this summer?!!
Thanks for that Terry, all managers make a few mistakes (Taibi & Veron anyone!). Dave seems to be someone who gets more right than wrong and if he thinks he?s worth it, I am prepared to trust him.
People were also sceptical about Neville and Saha, even the Yak was deemed to be lazy... and before that Kilbane turned out to be a decent buy as well.
I dont remember too many cartwheels from Everton fans when we signed Cahill neither, or Arteta, or Pienaar!
He won?t come ?free ? by a long chalk. The North East papers are reporting him demanding £10M up front in lieu of no money being due to Newcastle! He?ll rape us the same as did his other two clubs since leaving Liverpool as a spent force!

A typical Moyes Lazarus signing. Not many of them come off...and none of them are as expensive as this one.
No thanks, Not even in the slightest.
I promised myself I wouldn?t respond to this but as I can?t be bothered to do any work at the mo....
It?s in the Mirror so it's slightly more likely that Lord Lucan, Maggie Thatcher and Sean Connery are going to be our ?surprise? signings this summer and that Howard Kendall is coming back for one more shot....
If serious then no, no, no. He can?t play the 'one up top' role at all. I would rather put the wages to getting someone younger and brighter (as I have mentioned earlier in another thread, plowing all the money we have into getting Glen Johnson).
Sure that aint just bitter north east papers at the mo, Derek? I doubt he is mr popular in those parts after not signing a new contract! Even if he had a few years left with Newcastle, they wouldnt have got anywhere near £10 million for him, so I doubt even his agent would push him to ask for that amount, unless they want laughing out of most clubs.
Take him on a pay-as-you-play deal and then sell him for £20 mil in January to the cashed up Arabian Mancs down the road when they get desperate and he?s scored 5 in 3 appearances off the bench in the Uefa Cup for us. :- )
Think Pete Hurley got it right. He?ll end up with the blue half of Manchester. The man is collecting signing on fees and his agent will hawk him to the highest bidder. Don?t touch him with a barge pole. He?s a twat who loved scoring against us and I hate him.
OK, then put it this way... if it's a case of off-loading Van der Meyde who was on 40,000 a week and getting in owen for 50,000 a week we have to be on a winner no? I don't see what harm it could do to be honest, he has that eye for goal and Saha has never even been close to his goal ratio?s... it's gotta be a winner if it is pay as you play...
Others have already mentioned this, so just to reiterate......
The problem for me is not his injuries, but where he fits into the team. Every year of (relative) success we have had under Moyes has been with a 4-4-1-1 formation, namely with Cahill in the hole and someone either big and powerful (Yakubu, Marcus Bent) or pacey and hard working (AJ). Owen fits neither of these categories. He is a player who relies heavily on service and an unselfish player alongside him to lead the line - witness how much better he has been in an England shirt alongside Heskey than he has alongside Rooney.
I personally still think he’s a decent striker. His injury record is bad, but you’re more likely to get more games out of him than you are out of Saha, who seems to suffer more niggles and tweaks that prevent him ever being fully match fit. I honestly reckon that at the right club, with the right players around him and the right tactics, Owen could still average a goal in every 2 games. But at Everton? Not unless we ditch the blueprint of the past few years and move Cahill deeper permanently (or drop him - heaven forbid).
If he came on a pay as you play deal I think it would be a great signing: he’s bound to grab us a few goals off the bench when we’re chasing games. But at 50K a week I’d rather use that money to entice a player in his prime who is currently a world class talent, not a player who would be splinter arse for most of the season.
Hey if anything, we’ll have someone to accompany Saha on the treatment table! :)
For me, there?s only one way to look at this. Is it what David Moyes wants?
Money is obviously a factor, but even if he was genuinely a ?free? (which he wouldn?t be), and he said what Louis Saha is supposed to have said ? don?t pay me until I play ? would Moyes still want him?
My guess is ? I don?t think so. In the end, because he is in the strongest position he has been as our manager even without the cup in the cabinet, this is all that counts. We?ll have to see.
If,as reported,Moyes has a summer kitty of only £15M,he could hardly do better than to use it on a £5m signing on fee for Owen and a £10M fee for Downing to supply the ammo!
Yes,we deffo require a right-back but Philo can do the job-and Jags can play anywhere.
Bring it on ,I say!
Looks like Man City has fired the first shot - signed Gareth Barry for 12 million. Last season’s transfer activity was delayed because agents wanted to maximize their client’s Euro Tourney performances, but this seems faster than normal. I wonder if this will fire up the transfers earlier than normal?
Whoever Davey signs,I just hope he goes into the new season with 18+ genuine first-team contenders rather than the dozen that started last time.
Rodwell,Gosling and Baxter may make it in time but we aren’t going to challenge the Sky4 with the likes of Hibbert,Osman and Saha being regular picks, are we?
Clive - there will be many games played next season, and players like Baxter should be trusted to get results from teams we should beat. Gosling and Rodwell especially have already stepped up to full squad level. Depending on the game, they can already be trusted.
But I agree - we need two or three class players, plus three or two very good players to give us a chance next season.
Chris - the Barry transfer is interesting isn’t it. It must have been lined up a few weeks ago. Like you, I wonder what this might tell us about what’s going to happen next.
Personally I think this would be a good bit of business if it is true.
Owen has bags of European and International experience which we are in need of for the coming season.
Also, who better for the younger lads to learn from ? He is a model pro and a generally nice bloke who would fit well in to the squad - hardworker, no ego.
And he is bound to grab the odd goal when he plays - sure he is injury prone and wont play more than a bit part, but I think it would be a good short term signing with a sell on fee in a year or two.
Yeah it is an interesting transfer. It will most likely solidify the media’s new found Tottenham-esque love affair with Man City because of their now deep pockets. I think Man City will be very active this offseason so it’ll be interesting to see if they get another forward. If they do, it might give us an opportunity to bring Jo back. I don’t know about anyone else, but I thought he played really well for us considering his lack of familiarity with our club. He would be a more interesting prospect than Owen that’s for sure. But then again, "How much money do we have, and how much would he cost?" Still, if City become linked to other attackers, it will be interesting to see if he’s linked with us again. He seemed to enjoy his time with us and prices can go down under certain circumstances. Villa just sold Barry for 6 million less than what Livershit offered; probably because he told them "He was off for pastures new." And/or it could he saw a big paycheck ala when Scott Parker rejected us for Newcastle - an outstanding career move for him.
I confess to some amazement what short memories some of you have.
I would like us to have a shot at acquiring Darren Bent. I am a Darren fan. He has not come off at Spurs but so often, few do. We have Yakubu but he is really our only out and out striker.
Cahill and Fellaini can be relied on for around 5 - 8 goals in the season but what if the Yak was injured again. Vaughany is not ready yet and, for me, we want to capitalise on whatever value Anichebe has
Hibbert & Osman I would sell. We would not get so much for them but neither will get any better and plainly, they fall short of being good enough. Whatever we get for the two of them would make a nice contribution to the fee for say, Mouthino or M?Bia. We must be positive, too many other teams are reaching for where we are
id defo take him...have to remember the poor service he has had newcastle this year, at goodison i recken he could score loads especially. its a free transfer, 3 year deal, wages around 1.5 million a year =4.5 million...get him, could be worth a punt...
i think we should get him because we have had so many injuries this year. And if he is free then why not? wages per match is a lot but it might be worth it.
Owen at Goodison? Why not? I would like to see him at the old lady, or maybe I’m in the minority, perhaps he is slightly perhaps past his supreme best, but I think one season to sniff him out would be most welcome. Hope he comes actually.
Chris - we were supposed to be talking about Owen, but like you, I’d rather think about Jo. And he’d probably cost less.
Owen has scored about 26 in 53 matches (or close to). Not bad
Gerry the prodigal son didn’t rip the arse out of his employer to the tune of over 100k a week to play a less games than you could count on both hands last season in most of which he was utter shite and finished as a striker.
FFS people this smacks of seasons gone by for Everton making desperate moves for hasbeens and not the sort of move DM should or would make - no thanks to the glass ankled Welsh Midget, redtop lazy journalism and even lazier FM daydreaming.
If the prodigal son was ’lost and now is found’, remember that Owen, unlike Rooney was never lost.
Also note that prodigal means "wasteful of one’s means".
Sorry Keith. I relaized after I posted that although I made mention of Owen; I did get off the Owen trail there and onto other options. I must admit over here in the states that I haven’t seen a lot of Owen (he plays for Newcastle so why would I be bothered). But we know he has been a target for Moyes in the past, and I think DM likes the idea of collecting local lads and players who were Everton supporters because they would in theory give their all for the blue jersey. But I don’t know what form he’s in at this time. His game was largely based upon his speed and if he’s lost that, then has he developed the skills to compensate? From what it sounds like from everybody the answer is-not really. However, I think a lot of the Newcastle players didn’t have their heart into the team. I think there were too many players that were just collecting their paycheck and couldn’t be bothered with making an effort. Maybe this was the case with Owen. I know Moyes has had a few transfer misses in the past seasons, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one because I would trust he would have access to better information than any of us, and he would certainly need to do his research on this one - IF THE RUMORS ARE TRUE. Is Owen really only 29? Damn, seems like ’98 was yesterday.
Remember Andy Gray or Peter Reid anyone?
He might be only 29 but plays like he?s 39.
TOO Old
TOO selfish
POOR workrate
TOO expensive (whatever measure you apply).
Let?s build on the young bucks without taking on another has been.
Shearer is well qualified to judge a quality goalscorer and left himout of his most important games.
Give me Martins over Owen anytime.
Pay as you Play like the deal we have with Saha.
King Louis has proved he wants more than cash through his deal and by and large has done well when fit.
Let’ss ee if Owen wants money or success on a football pitch. I would suggest it should be the latter as surely he wants to make the World Cup squad.
Come on - look at Moye’s bad signings in the past. Kroldrup and Van der Meyde. A tall, strong centre back playing at the highest level in Serie A and a pacy, skillful winger who’d been unlucky with injuries but had played with Ajax, Inter Milan and the Dutch National Team.
They were hardly ’I told you so’ mistakes were they? And it goes to show you there are times you just can’t judge a players ability before buying them.
If Moyes signs Owen it’ll be the first time he’s ever committed any real money on an aging player struggling with injuries. On the other side of the coin, Owen does have the ability...
It’ll either be a great move or one more lesson learned by David Moyes
Fair points on Koldrup and VDM, Garry. We have been somewhat of a graveyard for strikers in recent times - Beattie, Johnson - who have come to us with good credentials, lost them while they’ve been with us and then picked them up again after they’ve left. I tend to side with those above who say that Owen would not fit in with David Moyes’s apparently preferred system of play. That’s 1 up front, and whoever that is has to (a) have the height and size to battle it out in the air and physically with quality centre backs, (b) have skill on the ball and (c) be able to score. Owen doesn’t have (a) and needs someone to do that for him. If we play one up front with someone who doesn’t have (a), then he’s going to have to be a chaser of lost causes a la Johnson - which, while he may otherwise tick and surpass Andy on (b) and (c), Owen ain’t. For mine, oddly, the best we’ve looked is when we’ve had Fella up front with Tim working around him.
I don’t think 4-5-1 is Moyes’ preferred system of play. I think that’s the system he uses given the players he’s got to work with. I think we’ll sign both Owen and Jo and he’ll want to play them together up top.
Jo is awful though.
Michael Owen - no thanks.
If we’re going to have someone on the way down in their career I would rather have Phil neville’s mate - David Beckham.
Garry if DM did the slightest bit of homework on Van Der Waster he’d have found out the lazy bastard hadn’t completed a game for years and lo and behold in four years the twat never completed 90 minutes for us either, he took a risk and it bombed expensively. The Kroldrup affair has a lot more to it than I think we’ll ever know but looking at Serie A you never get crunching tackles from defenders in that league unless they learnt their trade elsewhere; as an example Gattuso learnt his trade at Rangers thus knows how and when to get stuck in, but lots of others there have time and space to fanny about and run with or play the ball out of defence something you rarely get time to do in the EPL.
I’d rather give one of the kids a shot over Owen who don’t forget chose the skunks for the money, one minded greedy little bastard looking for another paycheck before he gives it up to run his horses or gambling or other Welsh Lord of the Manor pish.
Owen? No thanks. For all the reasons above. Just looking at midfield and wondering what others think about bringing back Fernandes or even Deco aparantley surplus to requirements at Chelsea. Maybe similar style to Arteta but paired together could work.
Being honest I am far from convinced with the potential signing of Owen.
However, I accept that there is a strong argument FOR the signing. We probably have a transfer kitty of £15-20m. Owen is available on a free which would mean with wages of £40k per week a 2-year deal would cost us in the region of £4m. Now that buys us a striker who has European experience and could be on the plane to the next world cup. On the other hand we could go for a striker from the lower leagues, no experience and a transfer fee alone of probably more than the £4m it will cost in total for Owen.
From that point of view I can see the signing making sense. It increases the squad numbers, is still a potentially top quality player, and it doesn't eat into a transfer kitty that is needed for other areas of the side ( RIGHT HAND SIDE !!! ).
I don't think it would be a ridiculous signing....

Owen is a mercenary, a crock ,a geriatric and an an ex-red.
None of which we need.
As far as strikers go...I’m not sure we need one.
Midfield priority for me...but if we were to go for a striker...I like the look of Rodallega.
I too would prefer the focus to be on the midfield first before the strike force (and please Moyes, no more defenders for a while).
Leave him in the scrap heap at Newcastle. The greedy man got what he deserves, no second life line and the has been is so over rated!
Gavin, you wanna try anger management son.
Off topic, but in reply to the Kroldrup issue ? the rumour that won?t stop was that after he came back from injury he was frightened of heading the ball.
Would love to see what Moyesie would say about him in an autobiogrpahy in a few years. Just read Carragher?s one (yes, I know....) and the way he talks about Diouf, Diao, Cheyrou and Josemi is hilarious.
I note with interest the opening of the new Online Store and in particular the prices for kids shirts/kits. However, I am not going to moan too much about that at this stage because any venture that brings monies into the Club at this time aint a bad thing and I am happy to contribute to the cause. Perhaps what is more revealing is the football kits 'Heroes' section.... the section that deals with pre-printed requests for shirts with the player of your choice.
Note, however, the absence of Castillo and Jacobsen. Now, not that many (if any) shirts will sell with the names of these players on the back but this is perhaps indicative of their chances of staying for next season ? clearly a contract has not been agreed at this stage for these two. Not many will lose sleep over this of course (other than the players themselves) but only if there are replacements forthcoming in the Summer.
Castillo is unlikely due to the fee required by Red Star but Jacobsen fits the mould of a fee-free international player to start the season instead of Hibbert ? who was woefully outed at Wembley and targeted by Hiddink as our weakest link.
It looks like Owen is nailed on also ? sadly we are in no position to buy another proven goalscorer at this level who is fit and Owen would be a typical Moyes signing with something to prove ? a contract similar to Saha?s would be more prudent though perhaps than anything medium/long term. Owen has lost several yards of pace and will need to improve as an all-rounder to get into the current Everton team?.question is in the run-up to the World Cup does he have the desire?? This could be a gamble that could pay-off and if the contract is structured in a way that favours the Blues it could mean minimum risk.
Ledley and Moutinho would then cap it all off ? with Anichebe going to Cardiff for a year. You never know we could also see Jo back on loan for a year which would give us a decent squad player to tide us over until the Yak is firing once again?.Other than that I cannot see many other comings or goings unless Bill miraculously finds his Billionaire? Can you?
Danny, I'm a consultant to the MoD and work with far better young men and women than you or I coming home in boxes and bags, so anger management is the furthest thing from my mind. A scrounger that needed his lame arse kicking years ago is still a scrounger, no matter how flowery or PC you try to phrase it.
No signing on fee, £30k /match, £10k/win bonus, £10k/goal, £100k/goal against Liverpool, 3-0 on the hands AJ goal celebration.....Priceless!
