Kirkby verdict?

Comments (16)

Hazel Blears has just resigned from Secretary of State. Now if I'm correct, she was the person making the verdict on our potential stdium? Does anyone know if it will be delayed again because of this?

If Shaun Woodward gets Blears' post as Minister for Communities (as could very well happen if he doesn't replace Jacqui Smith), the Kirkby decision will fall into his lap. As MP for St Helens, will his decision be guided by the success or otherwise of St Helens RLFC stadium deal with Tesco which was cited at the inquiry? I fear it may well be. Still, by the time this is posted Brown will probably have called a general election and we're all fucked...

May next year for the general election I think. When I heard of the news of Blears I thought the same Tom. Surely anyone making a decision needs the enquiry to start over to get all the info? This must create a delay? Any experts out there who can explain?

Tom

The decision will not necessaily be delayed. But who get the job , and who gets to them first - the fans, EFC board, Tesco? - will make a big difference.

let’s get on that case!

Your concern is based on the assumption that politicians actually need to do things. They don’t. The "decision" can easily be made by a load of civil servants on the basis of, for example, what causes the least amount of work. The Secretary of State could rubber stamp their recommendation without further thought unless

a) Someone more senior than them gets involved, or

b) there is something in it for them.

The fact that these characters can get shuffled around so often or resign at the drop of a hat just shows how unimportant they are for anything other than being the fall guy.

Well said Mr Horne. These politicians are simply the figurehead that takes the fall when the shit hits the fan (or take the credit on the rare occasion they get something right). They do not really make the decisions. Have you ever seen Yes Minister? I know it’s old and it’s comedy, but I’d be surprised if it’s that far from the truth.

Whoever is in the job at the time will just sign off a decision that has been reached by Civil Servants and a committee.

What will be will be, and worrying about who gets the job is irrelevant.

Would be an interesting scenario if a Mr Andy Burnham was given the Communities Minister post...I could only see one outcome then....I wonder if Bill is pushing him all the way...

Hazel Blears probably has not seen the Inspectors report and as such a new Sec of State will know just as much as her. On the topic of should the decision be delayed if there is a general election I don’t think the planning process will grind to a halt . Since 1948 when it was introduced we’ve probably had 15 changes in Government. The next Sec of State may be a local MP but Hazel Blears was a local MP and may have been a closet football fan. Who knows. We may get Andy Burnham and he is against Kirkby. I hope we get Hillary Benn one of the the few honest MP’s left. I think his total expenses claim would not buy a Playstation 3.

My understanding is that Burnham is in favour of a ’shared’ stadium but he does not oppose DK per say - see this article: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2008/09/05/minister-we-ll-back-talks-on-shared-everton-and-liverpool-stadium-100252-21681826/. Anyway - that’s enough organising of the Cabinet for me.

Labour votes will be at a premium even in Harold Wilson’s old constituency.Yea or nay to Kirkby will depend entirely on whether ’the party’ see it as a vote winner or loser for their candidate!

As this is a ’Public Inquiry’ related thread, I’d like to ask ’ron leith’ why he feels the need to use an alias when participating on this forum?

Maybe K ron leith D has something to hide?

Neil Adderley, I am an interested yet non participating onlooker watching this ’debate’ from the sidelines.
Not wishing to appear cynical or critical yet I am bamboozled by your mentioning a K ron leith D in your post.

Running with the Yes Prime Minister thread, I don’t care who gets the job so long as she has big tits

Last season’s fuck up with transfers must have been based around Fatty Wyness wanting to hold funds back for Kirkby. I reckon if the club release funds for Moyes to spend this summer, you can conclude Kirkby is dead in the water.

The only big tits in the Labour Party belong to Jacqui Smith and she’s already gone. Mandelson is a big tit if that’s what you mean. ’She’ may get the job.

Kirkby will get the nod irrespective of which tin pot cretin is Home secretary.

Then Mr Kenwright can stand on stage and take the bow he thinks he deserves - instead of flowers he’ll get cabages. How can one man get so many things wrong.
