Setanta

Looks like, according to the Daily Mail, Setanta might be going to the wall. Given they're talking about the knock-on effect possibly putting several Scottish clubs out of business, it surely has implications for any money the Blues hope to receive from the Premier League. Whether loans are guaranteed against this money, or whether it affects our ability to sign players, who knows?
It's not a good day for football though. It's like ITV Digital all over again.

EPL teams should be alright, we?re a lot more dependant on Sky than we are on Setanta.
Plus ESPN will probably buy them anyway.
Anyone who employs Steve McManaman as a pundit deserves to go bust.
And if sky goes the same way.......
With everyone banging on about how great the Premier League is, and how many people watch it, I'm sure some channel will bail them out and take over the deal.
In the long run I would rather say IT IS A GOOD THING for football. The absurd amount of money paid for television rights and just about anything that is football-related is insane.
Now, let?s just hope the Americans manage to make the neighbours go bankrupt as well. Then something good for football actually can happen in the long run.
Setanta are due to pay the English Premier League £30M some time over the summer, so thats money that the clubs definetly wont see should they go bust. When Setanta go bust, and it only looks like "when" now not if. The rights for the games they have revert back to the PL, which they would then have to sell on to someone else again. If ESPN fancy broadcasting them they may as well wait to Setanta go bust then put in a much reduced offer, who else is going to bid?? I dont think sky would bother for another 28 games or whatever it is.
I think the £30M is possibly due next week, the 15th.
If they can’t stump up £3M now for the scottish prem then I would guess they are buggered. At least hopefully I will be able to get out of my pain in the ass contract that takes 60 days notice and only in writing to be removed from.
I can’t stand another second of Craig Burley either. He has got more teeth than sense!! The goofy knobhead!
This is just speculation Paul, but it is possible that they pay the English £30M but not the Scottish £3M. If I were Setanta I’d put everything I had into keeping the English rights, as that’s where you’re going to recoup money, I’d happily sacrifice the Scottish rights and let someone else show SPL to safeguard the big one.
Having said that it doesn’t look like that is the case, and they really don’t seem to have any money. They need to pretty much double their number of subscribers to make a profit, and that’s not going to happen in the off-season, with rumours of them going bust.
Joey, if Sky go bust then we all go return to riding around on horseback and watching the occasional game on terrestrial played by players on reasonable wages - it just won’t happen.
As an aside, nice photo of Des Lynam... is he just wearing non-HD make-up or has he taken to transporting himself around on his face?!
Tony Parsons - Fucking A mate, Mcmanaman is still as annoying as he was when he played for the Reds, my favourite memory of ’Macca’ is of him being crunched by John Ebbrell and Barry Horne in big Joes first game in charge. God I hated Steve McManaman and the rest of the ’Spice Boys’!!!
Good riddence to Craig Burley. He talks some Sh*t
From monday’s Guardian:
"Now, having planned their budgets on the basis of the revenues arising from Setanta’s pledges, sports organisations and clubs will be forced into an uncomfortable recalibration of their expenditure. Some, including the FA with its £175m four-year deal and the Premier League (whose contract with Setanta is worth £130m for the broadcast of 46 matches a year) benefit from shareholder guarantees ensuring they will be paid even if the company fails."

For those who berate the running of our club, be thankful that we have a measured approach - I am of the opinion that our share of this money will not be ’spent’ yet, whereas many other clubs will have, and will need to make cuts elsewhere or loan more to cover the loss. Another reason to be cautious eh?
And for those who think the same can’t happen to Sky, 2 questions. Why when its happened to several other major businesses in the world? and, if you had just lost your job, or are having to make cutbacks cos of increasing bills, etc., whats one of the first things to go? Food on the table or the Sky TV?
Stewart, you really made me smile with your post, then i realised you might be serious!
Someone might know the details better than me... Didn't Everton securitise their TV money? This is an important question because... depending on how we did it... if we securitised the TV money, effectively we sold the right to receive it. If the TV money stops coming then it is tough titty on the person who bought the right to receive it ? not our problem.
This is different to borrowing money backed by the security of the TV income ? if this is what we did then we still owe the money and it is our problem if the TV money stops coming in.
Hope this makes sense. Essentially there are two different financial arrangements ? Anyone know which we have with respect to the Setanta money?
Dennis, I don’t understand what made you smile, or why you thought I wasn’t being serious?
Great, SKY next please then maybe all the Yanks, Russians and Arabs will piss off and give us our League back. Just imagine, being in with a chance of winning something because you had the best run club as opposed to just because you have ten times more money.
Phone them up and say you want to cancel. You will get the next 3 months for £3 each, not that there is anything good on, but it still cheaper.
