Timmy's brace subdues Japan
Comments (11)
Timmy was on song for a second half brace to subdue lively Japan in Melbourne tonight.
The first half was a sleepy dog enlivened by a useful headed goal from the Royale Blues.
The 2-1 win means the Socceroos finish on top of their World Cup qualifying group. A draw would also have sufficed.
At the end a tacitern Timmy gave a fawning media short shrift and praised the 70,000 home crowd.
He and the squad were reported to be heading for a Melbourne nightclub that asks punters to leave nicely at closing time rather than calling the gutter press, as is the case in Sydney.

Congratulations to Tim on his two goals.I just wished that he had saved them for the cup final!
You can't put a cost on the goals he?s scored for us and his country. The great man is meeting ESCA (Everton Supporters Club Australia) in Sydney on Wednesday 24th June... Check out the forum on www.evertonfc.com.au for more details, it's free but a ticket-only event.
Just to add the socceroos went through the entire group only conseeding 1 goal with lucas neill marshelling the back line might be a good signing on a free.
Tim?s first goal came when he outjumped defenders at the back post to loop a gentle well directed header into the far corner. His second was a typical Cahill effort when his genius like instinct placed him in the right spot in a crowded penalty area for a tap in. He deservedly won the best player trophy then made it quite plain in a brief post-match interview that the media are not his cup of tea.
I was at the MCG to see the game live and Tim was simply outstanding. He could easily have had a hat-trick. When he was subbed off five minutes from time he was given a standing ovation.
Regarding the media, Tim gave a lengthy TV interview this morning (Oz time) on Channel 9, one of the three main commercial channels, and he also spoke at length to the sports radio station SEN and was perfectly forthcoming on both occasions.
I believe he was unhappy with immediate post-match stuff because Fox Sports, who covered the game, were one of those who were quick to jump on the "Tim was drunk" bandwagon a few days ago. As always, he has acquitted himself magnificently and continues to be a superb representative for his club and his country.
When Evertonians grumble about the club v country stuff, they have to recognise that Tim is a national hero in Australia and rated by many as the finest sportsman in any code that we have right now.
Just to add, further to Doug?s comment, (the Doug Walters?) Lucas Neil did look excellent in defence against a lively Japanese team, although by his own admission he was at fault for the goal.
I was amongst the 70,000 at the MCG last night to witness Tim putting the sword to the Blue Samurai. It was a great experience for an Evertonian of over 40 years (been in Australia for 24 years) to see a player from his beloved club held in such high regard by the lively crowd. I was lucky enough to take my 13-year-old Aussie-born daughter with me to her first ever match and I believe we have just gained another supporter of our great club (OK I might have been pushing in this direction for a few years!). Tim Cahill is a great credit to the game and Everton Football Club make no doubt about it!
Australia also gave a debut to a 20-year-old right full back named Rhys Williams who started off a little nervously but improved and looked a good prospect. He is with Middlesbro but has been on loan with Burnley during their 2009 push for promotion. Could be someone to look at perhaps for the future, our right hand side could do with some help!
Think Lucas Neill wants about 75 grand a week, thats the reason he left the hammers. Personally I can see him moving to Turkey with Harry Kewell, he seems to have a new lease on life there and has been fit for most of the season.
And the Turks have money to burn too, personally I have never rated Neill always got caught in possession whilst with West Ham. And his distribution is woeful.
Tim Truly is a Hero - both Nationally and domestically with the Blues. A true Gent and role model. I sincerely hope he ends his career with us and we can send him off to Oz with a huge testimonial - where, no doubt, he will spend the funds on others and good causes and not himself. He is worth his weight in gold and I would like to see him as a starting striker next season alongise the Yak. I have a sneaky feeling that the Socceroos will do very, very well in the World Cup - their togetherness reminds me of that at Everton.
Hi John,
Very interested to see your comment that Tim will be meeting ECSA next week. Had a quick look on the forum and on ECSA web site but couldn?t find anything.
Any chance you might have a link?
Not the Doug Walters but he is a distant relative apparently but Neill would be good signing when he realises that no one is going to pay a 30-year-old the amount he wants.
Ciaran it?s the first announcement on the ESCA forum. ESCA members will be emailed the details tomorrow & they will be posted on the forum shortly.
There are 100+ confirmed at the moment.
