Defour Bid?

Comments (15)

According to Sky Sports (never wrong for very long...) we've had a bid turned down for Standard Liege's skipper and midfield maestro Steven Defour.

Now in my opinion, Defour was the talent we should have picked up instead of Fellaini last summer, but I can understand the reasoning behind signing the big man ? seeing as Defour is another pocket rocket. However, there is no doubting the little man's class.

I'm very glad to hear that we've been linked to a player who will undoubtedly add the creativity and guile we lacked after Arteta's injury last summer, and who will hopefully bring the best out of his former compadre Fellaini. However, the negative side is that it may mean that the protracted chase for Moutinho is over as they are almost identikit players.

That is unless we are in the process of being purchased by a mystery Sheik and we're after them both?

Here's hoping...

Now this is a player who I believe could do very well for us and, if we had the money, I would hope he?d be being considered. Villa have been linked with him before & the price quoted seemed very high at that stage. If we got him, I?d be surprised!

I?m with you on that Marc, I?ve watched him a good number of times and always thought how much of a class act he looks. He?s young so not perfect but very much a great prospect. Like the BIg Fella though, the fee?s a high.

Hey, How would not signing Mountino be the negative side? What do we actually know about him? That we are the only team linked with him? What does that tell you???

From what I have seen of Defour, he looked pretty decent. It?s always a bit of fun talking about who we will/won't sign... but sometimes it just gets dragged on and on!

I?m rarely one to get swept along on the ?who are we signing? waves which flow through this site over the summer months, I personally would be very happy to see Everton sign Moutinho.

Having seen him shine in a piss poor Sporting side last season, it?s inevitable that other sides will be interested, it?s just that it?s Everton who are linked in the press.

An Everton supporting friend of mine saw him play in the Sporting v Benfica clash last season whilst in Lisbon on a stag weekend and has nothing but the highest praise for him. I echo this and would love to see him pulling the strings in a blue shirt.

Will it happen though? Only DM and BK know for sure...

Why is it we only ever have failed bids in the press? It happened with Naughton, and now with Defour! I know it?s just agents trying to drag a few more teams into the bidding, but every summer it seems we get a few stories suggesting that Everton really ?low ball? clubs when making an initial bid!

Both are quality players: Defour was class against us in Uefa Cup at Standard and would be a great signing if the rumours are to be believed; Moutinho is definitely class and more versatille too compared to Defour.

That's why I would've thought Moyesy might've kept up his interest in Moutinho as he can play in a couple of postions, whereas Defour just plays centrally but he?s definitely a player we should be looking at. I agree with Richie, Defour was the player I wanted instead of the big fella but Fellaini as grown on me as a player and no doubt will get even better; with his mate alongside him, we might get the best out of both of ?em! COYB, let's get some quality signed up this year!

Catch-22 situation for me. From the times I?ve seen him play, this guy is class and has some mongrel in him. But he is another centre midfielder, I am all for another creative force in the middle, but it's not our major weakness.

Sure we could sign Defour and push Mikel back onto the right but I really liked the look of him in the middle last year.

I’m not sure your right Russel, I’m expecting big things from Pienaar, Fellaini and Young Jack ( how cool was he last night? ) next season, Arteta will return, hopefully fully recovered but we still need to strengthen midfield If we are to force our way into the top four we have got to start bossing games, not with the percentage football, that has taken us this far, but with composed confident ball retention we’ve began to show glimpses of, We will never do that over an entire game with Cahill and Neville, dont get me wrong, they, have been wonderful. Phil has brought that winning mentality and Tim has given us some wonderful moments, especially his goals that have earned us surprise draws against the top teams, but they were totally outclassed for by chelsea in the final and lets be honest here, it wasnt for the first time against a top team, neither one would be more than squad players with a sky 4 team club and if we are to progress, we need better players in the middle of the park than these two. there are of course other areas we can improve on - the keeper and the right side - but players like Jagielka, Lescott, Baines Rodwell Arteta, fella and Pienaar we have a very good chance of being a very good team

If we did get Defour and he becomes a regular starter, then Arteta may move back out right where he is class, but needs a decent right back to first give him a hand out there, and second, to give the opposition someone else to worry about and not just double up on Arteta! Maybe this Naughton and Arteta could mimmick what we have on the left. I hear Sheff Utd are willing to offload him now.

Dan did you watch Arteta last season? He is far far far more effective in the middle. After his previous season with his ongoing abdominal problems, he seemed to lose a yard of pace which made him a lot less effective out wide, to the point where people were questioning whether he was any good anymore. Arteta as a central midfielder should be the focal point of our team, the player the team is built around.

I did watch him last season, Alan, and I think he has got back that yard as his fitness came back, but of all the players we have been linked with, very few have been wide players. If we got in 1 or 2 central midfielders during the summer for whatever reason, then I think Arteta would go back to being our best option on the right. I'm hoping that we do get a player who prefers to play there, because Osman has never been effective playing there, and I agree with what you say, Arteta is best in the middle.

I?m surprised the name Sergio García never gets mentioned (or did I miss it?).

He plays wide right/striker, featured in the 2008 European Cup Spain squad that Mikky can?t get near and plays for Real Betis who?ve just been relegated (he was missing for the end of the season and Betis struggled without him).

So potential wide player... ahead of our Spanish maestro in the Spain pecking order... probably begging to be released to play European football and can?t be too costly to buy (£6-8M?)

Here he is with a goal strangely familiar in style to someone with big ears I vaguely remember playing in royal blue
