Could Captain Pip succeed Moyes?

Comments (43)

I have an awful feeling Everton may be looking for a manager ere long! It's not just the interminable delay over the signing of THAT contract but the poor performances of the team and Davey's lost enthusiasm that troubles me.

So before we start talking of the likes of Allardyce and Curbishley, perhaps we can look a little nearer home for a likely successor. Now everybody, including BB recognises that Everton are in a period of uncertainty at the moment. Uncertain about DK, uncertain about a new owner and, to me, more important than anything, uncertain as to whether we're on the way up or on the way down.

So, rather than rock the boat too much if the worst happens, why not give a chance to a young man who these days is the lone voice of positivity in these parts ? Phil Neville?

Now I know that Captain Pip is not everybody's cup of tea as a player but most of us recognise that he's a born leader and never hesitates when it's time for someone to step up to the plate. He's won 50 odd caps for England and played with and against some of the best players in the modern game. I've no idea whether or not he has management aspirations but I do know he has the pedigree to succeed in the role, initially as an inspirational figure.

To me, he's our Gareth Southgate. Same generation, even better pedigree and always leading from the front. With no more experience, Southgate has proved a worthy successor to McClaren and I do believe in keeping it in the family. So instead of procrastinating over who could possibly follow Moyes, let`s look to Everton for an Everton solution. I propose Phil Neville ? have I a seconder?

I?d take a chance and offer the job to Andy Van Der Meyde as player manager myself.

He ticks all the boxes. International pedigree, played with and against some of the best players in the world, most likely to take the players for a lively chinese dinner ala Howard Kendall.

It might also be the kick up the backside he needs to fulfill his undoubted playing potential.

Have I a seconder?

Agree with you Ben. As for the rest of you, shame on you!

Pip is a model professional and clearly leadership material. He’s not a great footballer, but i have no doubt he can become a good manager somewhere down the line.

Some people think Gordon Brown is a good leader, maybe when he gets kicked out of Downing Street he could take over - he?s used to operating a debt economy, magicking (no) things out of thin air and talking bollocks!

Seb St Clare is definitely Richard Dodd?s lovechild - keeping madness in the family!!

Phill Neville:

Pro?s:
Worked with the best manager of his generation (Alex Ferguson).
Other players who have played for him have gone on to do well as managers.
He?s a leader
Keeps stability at the club
We dont have £30m to give to a new manager to buy his own team

Cons:
No experience
Some fans hate him
He makes James Milner look handsome

Overall I think he?d be a good replacement, I believe he has aspirations of taking over from Moyes, and I feel Moyes is grooming him for the role too.

Some people are just too quick to jump on Phill?s back cause he?s one of the worst passers in the game.

Everton Fan - I need a million pounds or my son will die of a tragic illness
Phill Neville - Oh no thats terrible... here have a million pounds
Everton Fan - Fuck off i?m not accepting a million pounds of you you ugly pile of shite.

Some peoples hate for him is just bizzare.

Phil would get my vote, if only for a trial spell until the end of the season.
He’s certainly a far better player than Moyes ever was and has been prepared to rally the troops whilst our manager has been mentally AWOL!
I know his heart is in the club as he had the chance to go to Bolton in the summer for a good wedge and instead signed a long-term deal with us.
We could do a lot worse!

Evidence please? Perhaps use the Derby just gone as the most recent examples.

I’m sorry, are you trying to destroy your own point here??

At 1st I laughed the idea off but reading from other people’s comments, such as Ben, Phil and Andy. It might not be such a laughable remark to make. Sometimes a footballer’s ability on the field doesn’t reflect his managerial abilities. I do think however, that it might be to early for him and perhaps an Assistant job for us or whoever might be better.

Sebastion with those sort of outlandish ’off the wall’ thoughts you should consider pitching ideas for the next series of ’Little Britain’ or getting a spot at the Edinburgh fringe.

Not so outlandish a suggestion as some make out. I suspect that success against both Liege and Newcastle will see Moysey get his £4M a year deal BUT a double failure will see him walk and Neville put in temporary charge by Monday.

At least the lads wouldn’t have to learn any new tactics-Pip is our best exponent of hoof-ball so nothing need be changed.
Fopr what its worth,I reckon this plan for him to take over was behind that ridiculously long contract he was given although he’d probably want a rise to 80K a week to keep pace with inflation!

It’s perhaps too soon for him, but still a good call.

Players who played under Ferguson have good records as managers.

Whatever you think of Pip - and I can’t understand the hatred myself - he is undeniably a thinking footballer and will probably do well in management one day.

We could do worse (keep Moyes for example).

John - it?s because he is from Manchester

True but anyone who gives his all for the club regardless of ability, and is clearly commited to and loves the club should be given some slack.

Dislike him for his footballin abilities yes, but where he comes from shouldn’t really matter if you ask me. he’s a good pro, a good leader and seems a decent guy. Thats good enough for me.

Andy, I couldn’t agree more with what you have said above. Neville has his weaknesses but he gives 100% to everything Everton so thats good enough for me too. My point was that unfortunately some people can’t see past the fact that he’s from Manchester so he could play like Pele and he still wouldn’t be good enough!

Phil Neville a born leader? You must watch different games to me, because I don?t see captain fantastic dragging us back into the games when we go behind, or organising the defence when we?re under pressure. I see him shouting and no one listening.

Would you listen to someone who can?t even pass a ball to his own players?

I've been thinking about Davey's comments on the weekend, about the side being "unbalanced". Considering it's his job to determine and mould that "balance", geez we're in a bit of trouble if he has to wait till after successive poor performances to (a) notice it and (b) actually do something about it.......

Never have been confident in Moyes's attacking verve or ability to change a game......maybe it is time for a change. No disrespect of course, great manager, UNBELIEVABLE results considering the threadbare resources, but maybe he just can't get any more out of this squad anymore and just some fresh blood and motivation is all that's needed. Seen it happen downunder in the AFL so many times......teams with the same players rejuvinate completely with a new coaching panel...

Paul - The problem with Neville not able to drag us back in to a game doesn?t mean he isn?t a leader. Players like Gerrard for example can drag their team back in to a game for 2 reasons:

1) He plays is a position where it possible for him to dictate a game.
2) He?s a very good player

Neville doesn?t fit in to either of the categories, but he does go round the players and give them encouragement, try and bond the team together and keep their spirit up, give out orders to team mates etc etc

There are different ways of being a leader, some lead by example, some by speaking and motivating. I?m not saying he is the best leader in the game, but I?d disagree that he isn?t a leader. If we had more players in our team who were like him (not ability wise mind) we?d be a lot better off.

This must go down as the daftest post of the week and there have been a few in the last few days, I can tell you!

For the one thousanth time, Davey is going nowhere so ANY discussion about a successor is totally superfluous. Most of us agree that if Chairman Bill believes his star manager is worth the reputed £4M a year, he will give it to him. I haven?t the slightest doubt there would be a queue of clubs wishing to do and Bill will know that.

On the other hand, the impasse may not be about money but, perhaps, concern over future ownership and the unresolved ground issue. But, in any event, Davey?s not for walking nor Bill for firing. Neville will have to wait!

Richard you may be right but your kind of missing the point of the discussion in my opinion. Its not so much "oh my god Moyes is leaving who’s going to replace him", more "IF it happened what do people think about Neville as a possible future manager". Were just discussing whether he would make a good manager, and IF moyes did leave now or in the future would we be happy with Pip taking over. Just a healthy discussion to pass the time nothing more, nothing less.

Harry Catterick - very average player by all accounts ( As a player he was way before my time) - Manager - 2 Championships + 1 FA Cup
Arsene Wenger - average player
Mourinho - average player
Alex Ferguson - nothing special as a player, I don’t even think he won a Scotland cap.
Point - don’t be dismissive of the idea- many outstanding players have proved to be not so good coaches/managers.And many of today’s outstanding managers/coaches were rather ordinary palyers

Michael agree with you totaly, don’t mean to be an arse and pick up errors in your post but Mourinho never played footy as far as I know... he was Bobby Robson’s interpreter... makes it even more impressive that he’s got to where he has! Apparently Bobby was very fond of him and taught him a few things, then let him do those things in training... this built up over a period of time to the point where he was taking large chunks of training... and the rest is history.

Fucking hell Seb thats a belter lol, Pip as manager fuck me!! i dont even want him to be are captain let alone suceed Moyesy!! as anyone else noticed that since he’s become captain he doesnt seem to rant and rave and gee up players as much as he used to before he was captain when he first came to the club from Man Utd?! to be honest Neville is really starting to do my swede in, i look on the net and in the papers and all the time i see Neville spouting his mouth saying we need to do this and we need to do that and were gonna start doing this and vice versa and i think to myself, fucking hell if only he could play aswell as he talks because bloody hell he cant half ramble on!! yeah some people might say he always seems positive when talking to press and what have ya but his he really a worthy captain, is he the type of captain that the players look up to and respect and want to play with, im not too sure!! and with regards to giving people a chance and appointing within then how about nurturing Stubbsy along the way and give him a fair crack if the opportunity arose? he’s a boyhood blue, loves the club and would know what the fans want because he is one of us. he was captain of are club and an influence on the pitch, he alwasy’s talked and helped players through games and i would think he is well thought of at the club and for me if we did go down that road of appointing within then why not try Stubbsy, Boro tried with Southgate, ok he’s not Boro through and through and some of there final league standings have’nt been the best but Boro always seem to play football the right way and always seem to give the top four a real good game and with a little bit of time and a few decent signings along the way they will soon be challenging for the top six on a regular basis!! if Everton think of taking that route then we ought to take a leaf out of Boro’s book!!

Andy - I stand corrected re Mourinho - I’ve got Bobby Robson’s book about his year in Barcelona and "The Special Interpreter" is mentioned !! I think he may have been an amateur player. You will probably know the answer to this one - I am sure that the manager of Arsenal’s double winning team of 1971 Bertie Mee, had no coaching background and had been their Physio !!!
The point about Catterick - and I am going from what my late Father told me - he was an average player and hardly a great crowd favourite.Personally I think Neville will become a good manager, I think he suffers some unfair and frankly over the top criticism from some Evertonians.

Michael - Spot on just an amateur player but not for very long I dont think. I couldn’t claim to be an expert on the guy but saw an interesting documentary about him a while ago.

Another sucessful manager (not that i’d want him) was Arigo Sachi... never played the game and was in the army. How he ended up managing AC Milan and the Italy i’ll never know. Was very sucessfull at AC but if my memory serves me correctly he got Italy knocked out of Euro 96 (I think) by fielding a bunch of reserves against Romania thinking they’d just roll over and let Italy win.. they didn’t and they got knocked out lol!

Well Rachel can you honestly say David Moyes is worth every penny he’s asking for, especially as we have now fallen at the first hurdle in a European tie YET AGAIN!!! I used to be pro-Moyes but I now think the following:
He did very well in the 2004-05 season to massively over-achieve (the part up until Christmas with all those wins was almost fantasy stuff). After this, teams started to figure out the 4-5-1 (4-1-4-1?) system, though Moyes still persevered year after year. Come the end of that 04-05 season and also the season just gone we were VERY lucky to hold on to those 4th and 5th place finishes. I was impressed with some of the skillful football played last season (pre-Fiorentina), but honestly believe he won’t achieve the potential as a manager that we believed he had. The team isn’t very good currently in terms of defending and keeping the ball (two essentials of the game) and I would not be bothered in the slightest if he does go to Celtic or Newcastle or Spurs. There are plenty of British and continental coaches who could do at least as good a job for a lot less money than he’s asking. How much is the Metalist Kharkiv manager on for example? Look at the quality of football they played!!
Lose to Newcastle and I think BK should start sharpening the axe perhaps?

So this is how far we’ve sunk?? We’re all, or so it seems that fed up with DM that we would have Pip.

90% of ’good’ managers, come from 3 types, Halfbacks Kendall Paisley Stein Busby....Rip shit and bust centre forwads, SAF Catt Clough,.... Nomarks Wenger, Mourinho, Scolari...Others Revie Big Jack, Ramsey Franz B.

List 20 all time greats from Pele down and you wont find too many good managers.

So Pip?? why not?? with this club you never know, many a true word spoken in jest.

It could be the classic case of don’t do as I do, Do as I say!!

Don’t boot it, pass it to a blue shirt, to feet, then move.
