That Frickin' Contract Situation

Comments (24)

Moyes said: "I am here and I will sign a new contract with Everton shortly, maybe even before the weekend. It is with the lawyers now and we can talk more about it once it is done."

Mmmmmm..... In the words of Edward Woodward as Sergeant Howie... "Oh God! Oh Jesus Christ! Oh my God! Christ! No! No dear God! No Christ!"

For those of you who have never seen the Wickerman (the decent '73 version, not the shit remake), apologies for the seemingly bollocks last paragraph. For those of you who have seen it, how many of you are starting to feel the same way about Davey Boy signing another 5-year deal at Goodison / Kirkby / An Other (delete as applicable), as Sergeant Howie did as they dragged him up and over the peak of that cliff?!

Seriously though, I have been a great admirer of Moyes in the past and, at the end of last season, was desperate for him to sign up for 5 more years. Now I don't want to start bad-mouthing the man when not all of the facts are known about what is going on behind the scenes. All I know is that currently we are playing shit football, getting shit results, and probably have shit all left to look forward to this season. Is this down to Moyes not signing his contract? ? at the very least it could be a factor.

So... why has the contract remained unsigned? From what I can see, there are a few options:

  1. Simply, Moyes is holding out for more money
  2. Moyes is wanting assurances that he will have X amount of money to spend over the next X amount of years in the transfer windows
  3. He is waiting to see how the ground move pans out because he wants to move to Kirkby / stay at Goodison
  4. He has been waiting to see if there is going to be any investment / a takeover as he is desperate for a large cash injection
  5. He has been waiting to see if there is going to be any investment / a take over as he has had a fallout with BK / the Board
  6. He and the club have simply agreed to wait for a great result to 'hang the news onto' as someone mentioned last week (which obviously hasn't come as soon as everyone would have hoped for!)
  7. He was / is waiting to see if a 'better' job offer comes around eg Man U number 2, Celtic, Newcastle
  8. They are genuinely agreeing some very minor small print issues
  9. His pen is broken
  10. A combination of the above
All I can say it that I very much doubt it will be signed before the weekend (it's Saturday morning now and no news), and I doubt it will be signed before Newcastle on Sunday as we have heard all of this, all before.

Moyes says that it's with the club and he wishes to stay.

The reason is to my mind plainly obvioius, namely the club are in discreet discussions on a sale and the buyer has stated that the club are not to offer any long-term deal to any party ? especially to the manager.

Its that simple !!

Out of your long list of reasons, why have you left out the most obvious one?

That he could be holding out for more salary/bonuses.

I hope he doesn?t sign, he has had over 6 years to build a squad and we still have no midfield, no wingers, no pace and no clue what to do when we do try to pass it about!!!

KENWRIGHT & MOYES OUT!!!

Jeremy, that was option 1, but for some reason the mods have merged it into the point about transfer budget! There were 10 points in my original post.

Sorry, my fault in the editing. Fixed now - Michael

There was a piece I read this morning on the Daily Post / Liverpool Echo website, I think it was Dominic King interviewing Moyes and DM stated that the summer had adjusted the supporters expectations downwards because they realised that there was no money to spend.

He also said that he would have to rebuild the team by buying players such as Lescott and Cahill.

Now I know that I read this piece, but it seems to have dissapeared off the web pages or has been watered down somewhat.

It would appear that some form of compromise has taken place, but I am mystified as to why DM would stick out for something all summer, regardless of whether that was improved terms or reassurances on spending power, only to capitulate, realising that you are back to where you started in the first place.

Besides, just because a contract is signed doesn?t necessarily mean it will be honoured for its entire length.

I would like to know if anybody else read this article.

Interesting point Stefan but it raises the issue that the Club may well be caught between a rock and a hard place. Moyes is concerned as to what long-term transfer funds will be made available to him; his self-acknowledged prevarication over the summer was to ensure he got the best possible value before spending our money. The Club were lead to believe by super agent Pini Zahavi that Moutinho was available to us and from what I’ve seen he was the closest to being a dynamic replacement for Lee Carsley. Moyes held out for as long as he could but ultimately had to shop elsewhere. In short, despite Kenwright’s best possible intentions, funding was the problem.

If there are moves afoot to change ownership within the Club then we really should be careful of what we wish for. Moyes, in his quest to compete with the G14 clubs, has never had the opportunity to compete on a level playing field and I’m not talking about the Goodison camber.

Kenwright has always stated that he will only sell with the best outcome for the Club in mind ie. won’t saddle the Club with even heavier long-term debts as has happened across the way. Prospective new owners may wish to keep their options open with regard to the Club’s playing management but if they’re doing that, they are displaying their ignorance of the Club’s culture and history - who would they sign to replace Moyes? Keegan/ Ramos/Jol/Kinnear?

There is no-one in the game today who can compare with the dignity and honesty displayed by our Manager and I, for one, am glad that he epitomises all that I am proud of at Everton Football Club.

Oh and Stefan, that was my thought, until I heard Moyes say "it is with the lawyers". Surely he means his own lawyers? In which case the ball is in his court?

I?m interested in hearing the details which have delayed the contract as, when questioned, Moyes said he will say when it?s sorted. That?s a bit strange to say the least.

P.S. Lee, Jeremy didn’t mean option 1 as option 1 suggests holding out for more transfer money, not his own personal salary. And as far as that’s concerned i certainly don’t think Moyes would hold the club to ransom. He’s never struck me as being financially motivated.

You?ve been impressed for 5 years and were desperate for him to sign at the end of the season.

6 weeks into the new Premier League season and now you want him out because we?re suffering from a bit of poor form.

Knee Jerk?

Could the contract delay be anything to do with final takeover discussions going on.......?

P.S. Moyes to STAY, not Moyes OUT

I heard rumour (hate that phrase but what the hell) that the reason for the latest delay is that Everton have removed the previous contract deal and replaced it with a lesser one. Of course, that implies BK and buddies know what they are doing. Too much of a leap of faith me thinks...

Well given what has transpired with everything Everton for the last few years, there probably isn’t a contract anywhere. Even if there is, it’ll probably be spread over twenty years, "on loan" or just that Moyes wants a release clause. Some such nonsense anyway...

I would not believe another word out of Moyes mouth ever again. The man has joined Billy in the bullshit stakes, and cannot be trusted by any Evertonian ever again.

Between him and Billy Liar, they have committed such gross mismanagement and incompetence at the club since the end of last season, to such a level that they should both be fired immediately.

Lies lies and more lies all summer! From being told "Moyes has had money to spend all summer" by the perpetual human shield Ian Ross! To Moyes now saying to Dominic King the fans knew we had no money? What do they take us for? I know a high percentage of Evertonians are stupid, but not all of them!

Whatever game they have played, they have succeeded in ruining the season before it has even begun. For me, that is unforgivable, and they should be fired with immediate effect.

Tottally agree, Thom. Ross says the money was there... Moyes now says it wasn?t, and we all fuckin knew according to him. Still, fuck all will happen because we don't act like fans of a big club, we?re all so fuckin poliite it makes me sick, it really does.

If I were Moyes I would be inserting some concrete clauses in his contract that tie that slippery fish of a chairman of ours to garunteeing X amount of funding per season on playing staff and the guaruntee that he will be allowed to maintain a certain squad size / wages outlay.

However, I am not Moyes, so he is probably agreeing a clause that cements his right to play hoofball for 80% of our playing time this season without recrimination from the board.

Before you rush out, it isn't in the 2nd phase of the development which opened this week. It will open in June '09!
Weren't there thousands of tourists / visitors coming for the capital of culture 2008? Better late than never........................

Well what is Moyes to do? Outright contradict his chairman in public? not bloody likely if he has half a brain(and all indications are, he does).

If Moyes could afford a team that could play proper football, I’m sure he would have it.

Hell, he even brought Anichebe on with 30 minutes left in Liege, he can change his tactics/substitution pattern if he has the players to do so.

Just get tired of the constant bleating about Moyes when he hasnt been properly supported until transfer deadline day. I’m almost sure he would have had that 15 million we supposedly spent on Felliani around July 1st so he could have made smaller moves AND given the new squad members time to train and get to know their fellow Evertonians.

Thom Coleman,
David Prentice, one of the only journalists I would trust, said that Moyes and Royle were the only Everton managers "never to have told him a deliberate lie". I, for one, think Moyes is a man of honesty and integrity. I also firmly believe that Moyes was given his transfer budget towards the end of the window, after DK went tits up and AJ was sold.

Moyes also said that the contract was with the club's lawyers.

Its the "get out" clauses. Moyes will sign when both parties agree on what can terminate the contract.
