You're The Investor

Comments (18)

You're a multi-billionaire who has just aquired the first club of the City of Liverpool. It's January, it's the transfer window, the club is currently in negotiations regarding a 'called-in' possible ground relocation to Kirkby, a move which has the fanbase divided. You have 4 options. Do you...

1) Carry on with the proposed move, fighting nail and tooth with the authorities in an attempt to push through the 'mid-level' stadium in Knowsley, even though there is a growing portion, some would say now a majority, of fans who oppose it?

2) Retract any involvement in the move, and instead focus on the refurbishment of a once grand stadium, back to its glory days?

3) Retract any involvement in the move, and instead concentrate in finding a piece of prime real estate in the Liverpool boundaries, and commission work to start on a brand new stadium?

4) Retract any involvement in the move, and instead decide to stay, for the time being 'as you are', and instead concentrate on ploughing your money into the squad, just like your mate in Manchester is doing?

Oh wow, a ground debate. We haven't had one of those for a while. Let's see if anyone has the energy for this distraction...

Can I ’bundle’ it?

(ie: no to Moyes, Kenwright, DK, Neville?)

"You are a multi-billionaire ...." . I find this idea strangely attractive and, of course, the money wouldn’t change me at all - deep down that is. As an Evertonian I would naturally do what I could for the club. But if I wasn’t, what would be in it for me?

PLEASE NO- NOT AGAIN.

Redevelop Goodsion- well ok you can have an "okish" redevelpoed stadium yes, BUT the area it’s in will still be a Dump. Would Sunderland fans really have wanted a redeveloped Roker Park? Please we have to move on, other wise History is all we will EVER have when we are history.

Joe are you aware that saying ?we need to move on? is the ?noughties? way of saying "It?s my ball and I?m going home"... when you?re 9-0 down?

By all means say "Please no - not again" but don?t then immediately contradict yourself by giving YOUR opinion.

As you have, a couple of points.

1) Sunderland fans MAY have wanted to redevelop Roker, I?m not sure.... but neither are you!.

2) As for "the area it?s in will still be a dump", maybe collecting butterflies or opera is more your thing?

EJ Ruane - Thanks for your concern about my interests. Like a lot of Evertonians (unlike Liverpool Football shirt wearing scallies) I have a broad range of interests. I?m not sure where the connection with Goodsion Park being in a run down area has to do with it all?

Now my suggestion EJ, is have another interest yourself, I recommend listening to some Emillie Autumn.

Refurbishment of Goodison is a non-starter unless we get permission to knock down half of Walton and relocate the main road

Basically, no-one will invest whilst Goodison is the only option.

Wait and see what happens with DK. Turned down and other options need to be looked at, but redevelopment isn’t feasible - or it would have been the obvious thing to do.

Sunderland moved closer to the city centre from a site with more confinement and far less to preserve or build on. When they left they barely had a 20,000 capacity, half of which was terraced with only one leitch double-decker stand which was far more delapidated than either of our 2. I suggest people read up on Fenway and how/why Boston Red sox fans have fought to preserve their aging relic due to its character, atmosphere, history and location. We have something of real value that can quite literally be enhanced to create the most unique football stadium on the planet at a relatively central and accessible and of course historic site. Kirkby will never offer any of this! There is no need to move major roads nor knock half of Walton down neither. The one feasibility study done so far was performed several months after the vote and was by Tesco’s experts. The holes in it are as glaring as the rest of Wyness’s press releases.

Joe, first of all I didn’t express any ’concern’ (read it back - see, no concern).

Secondly you say..

"I?m not sure where the connection with Goodsion Park being in a run down area has to do with it all?"

Really!?

Er...it came from you Joe.

Remember this? - "well ok you can have an "okish" redevelpoed stadium yes, BUT the area it?s in will still be a Dump" (the words ’memory’ and ’Goldfish’ spring....etc).

As for your ’wide range of interests’ I’m VERY impressed (I read a book once.....green it was!).

By the way thanks for the listening tip.

By way of reciprocation, can I suggest you try listening to.............me.

Mike you say..

"but redevelopment isn?t feasible - or it would have been the obvious thing to do".

Erm...what?

So your ’argument’s’ ’logic’ is that if a choice is ’obvious’ that’s the choice that’s chosen.

How sweet.

We cannot afford to re-develop Goodison with new owners or not, not only would the costs be astronomic but also take into account for at least 4 seasons a greatly reduced attendance at home also, we have to move and Kirkby is the cheapest option right now, it may not be the best stadium but look at Liverpool they have hit a wall in their stadium plans.

Kings Dock would have been great and a steal at today's prices.

Mike

A small point: Kings Dock was a £35 million cost for less than half the project...... many years ago! In real terms far more expensive than DK.

Hardly a steal!.... sorry!

If you?re going to debate stadium costs and merits, please provide facts. For example, Mike Fisher how do you know HOW much it will cost to develop GP and how much the attendance will be reduced while it is being developed?

I suggest you look at TW archives to see what qualified architects and engineers have put forward on that point. You may be pleasantly surprised.

As for KD, the projected cost was £195 million for a truly world class stadium on the waterfront which EFC were only required to provide £30 million. Still a significant amount... but what a stadium.

The area around Goodison is a dump? Yes it is, but that is some insult to the people who live there. Most of the houses are kept really nice. People make the best of what they can afford, so before those of us who slag off the area do so, think!

Something that does not help is the central dump, Goodison Park. It is an eyesore. It would help the area no end if we moved away. No residential area deserves a Stadium, the two do not fit together. I also don?t think any existing parkland should be used for a bloody stadium, what right does a club have to use a valuable park for what is effectively two hours entertainment a week for people from outside? Stadiums should be on brownfield and away from peoples houses.

Goodison should become a park, and give something back to the residents who have had to put up with the stadium for years. If a stadium was proposed near to your house, I expect you would be just as fucking livid as I would.

If I am an investor, with lots of liquid assets, I look around for bargains following today’s meltdown to park my assets, and I wait until the asking price for EFC Ltd is a bargain, which won’t be very long.

Unless I love the club, and bleed blue!

5) Sack Moyes. Break the wage ceiling.

I don’t care if we’re playing in Timbuktu but if I’m going to watch from the director’s box every fortnight I want to see some proper football!
