Is Owen right for Everton?

Comments (20)

Several reports this morning say that Everton are putting together a £6Million bid for Michael Owen in the January window. Now we all know that Owen's family connections meant that he was brought up as a blue-blood but would his long and successful association with the darkside rule him out as the saviour we might need by Christmas?

Clearly `Owen 08` is not the model who took Liverpool and England by storm when he was a teenager and he is currently having great difficulty in convincing Mr Capello that he is still of International standard. Furthermore his expected demand for a £100k a week wage would shadow even our manager's mega-salary!

So, all things considered, is Owen the man we should turn to for salvation or would Moyes be better to swallow his pride and go for the slightly cheaper option of trying to re-sign Tim Cahill?

I personally think he is a spent force and I don't think he would even want to come to Everton as rumour has he snubbed us on transfer deadline day and also in 2005 opting to take the money of Newcastle. He has lost the pace he had of 8 or 9 years ago and I just dont see him fiiting into the way Everton play to be honest.

If I had a choice of signing a striker in that mould I would go for Jermaine Defoe any day of the week as, even though Defoe may not hack it at international level, there is little disputing he is a great goalscorer at club level. I think we had our chance to sign him before Portsmouth but we blew it.

No, I dont think Owen is the answer! He isnt the player he was a few years ago and Evertons problems are not creating chances, we have the Yak and Saha who will get goals if they are given the right service, and Owen is just a poacher, we dont need him! We need a decent right winger to free up Arteta in the centre and stop him getting doubled up on down the flanks!

So that’s why we need a billionaire - to pay Owen’s wages.

I like Owen. I think he is one of the best players in the current game however I do not want us to sign him because the cost versus the injury risk is far too great for a club with our limited resources. He might be worth a punt for Utd or Chelsea because if he fails it’s not as if they’ll be short of numbers or money. We on the other hand have already taken on Saha and with AVDM still picking up a salary plus Tim and Baines injury records I think it would be a huge Walter Smithesque mistake to buy him. It would be like when we took back Dunc or signed Gazza or for that matter further back when we signed Whiteside. None of them worked out for us.

I like Owen, but I seriously think Moyes has got to start trusting his supposedly ?Kids? like James V, and Victor A...

Owen is proven quality. 16 in his last 23 games in a shit Newcastle team says it all. He seems to have shaken off his hamstring problems, which were the main cause of his injury record. In short, I would love to see him at Everton, even if he isn’t as quick as he once was.
However, as someone else said, our problem is more creating chances. Yak is already feeding off scraps, we don’t create enough scraps for both of them to get a respectable tally.

I?d take him any day! Who gives a shit that he played for them cunts over park, he?s one of best finishers in this league if not the best and is wasted at Newcastle, should be in the England team as well! People might think he?s injury prone but when he is fit his goalscoring record is something like one in two or at least one in three, even at Newcastle!! What is it that they say, form's tempary, class is permanent!!

To be honest, I agree with you Danny, we need to add some creativaty to are midfield, we need to either bring in a quality wide player so we can shift Arteta in to the middle or we need a top quality, creative central midfielder because I don't think Osman and dare I say it Cahill are the answer. No, actually I know Cahill is not the answer but he?s not that type of player! I seriously think we missed the boat in not doing everything we possibly could to sign Moutinho because he would've given us that added quality going forward!!

Can anyone not remember Owen publically turning us down to go to Newcastle! Apparently he went there to win trophies instead, nothing to do with how much his wages were. I can't remember exactly what he said about Everton when he turned us down, but I can remember being angry, especially as he was once a blue. For this reason I couldn't stand to see him playing his career out at Goodison ... as if we were a last resort for him!

Ben Dover - You are surely an Evertonian of the lowest form (and even lower intellect), granted M O is red but at least try and write something vaguely witty instead of slagging off other posters and revealing your criminal nature.

By the way, before you crawl back under your stone try learning grammar and punctuation.

Lee, AJ better than Owen, get a grip mate! AJ couldn?t lace Owen?s boots when it comes to scoring goals, Owen might've lost a yard of pace but he can still score the goals!

For £100k a week wage we can get 4 good players.

Owen is ok, and ok is not good enough for us.

We need to get back in Euro and not fight relegation battles...
