Moyes, is he he man to take us forward?

Comments (39)

I really would like to know people's take on DM's "technically sound" managing skill since taking over.

Personally I'm very greatfull for what he has done for us in the last 3 season but I think his time at Goodison must come to an end. We need to play with Euro's elite, and it doesn't look like that is ever gonna happen while Sir David Moyes is still in charge.

If Moyes does decide to go, i think a few players need to follow him....

Oh, not again... surely you can't be serious? Can't you just read the latest Tony Marsh thread? There are views all across the spectrum, good, bad, to indifferent ? depending more on your individual perspective, what you wish to emphasise, and what you wish to ignore about 'The Moyesiah'.

And surely he's not going anywhere if he's signing a contract, like yesterday! (well, not quite...). And the transfer window ist geschlosen. So none of the players are going anywhere anytime soon.

Moyes must go. The harsh reality is one ? yes, one semi-final in 5 years ? this does not make him a "GREAT" manager like some of our friends on here seem to think. His record in the transfer market isn't exactly brilliant either (Krøldrup, Nash, McFadden, Gravesen). Walter Smith wasn't given this much time and he was hounded out of Goodison by us lot, the fans.

Thanks for the memories but, David Moyes ? you are the weakest link: goodbye!

Moyes is a good manager, not perfect but good, he’s proved it time and time again.

When you consider his spending, with the perspective of other premiership sides, we’ve had bloody good results comparatively. Sadly, I think any shortcomings are more likely to this being a right-man, wrong-club situation.

We can’t buy the players to compete with the top-4, until this season’s false start, we’ve been chipping away at the top-6 and we had the shite worried last season. But they go out and pay £20M for Keane, several more for Riera, blah, blah, blah and we scrape the coppers out of our piggy bank for Fellaini (who I still think could go on to be a very good player, given a few years) and a couple of frees.

I hope that if these take-over rumours are true then Moyes has the chance to build on his solid foundations for a couple of seasons with a big transfer kitty.

We see so many managers come to new clubs, having spent sucessful periods at their previous clubs, and not meet expectations. Some high profile ie. Ramos - Tottenham, others less so: Allardyce - Newcastle. You cant buy instant success, i.e. one season, with a new manager.

Changing managers at this point would be a disaster as one of the things Moyes is good at is working on a tight budget. Until we get some financial clout. We need to stay with Davey as he is the best we can get at this point. Seriously, as Tom says, who could do a better job? If we lose Davey now, all those proclaiming a relegation battle might actually be onto something.

Moyes does not have a particularly good record when he has been given money to spend. Krøldrup, AVDM, Beattie and to a degree Johnson. He transformed these players from proven PL to not very good at all. On the other hand, he has snapped up bargains Cahill, Arteta, Lescott, the list goes on.

Paul has hit the nail on the head. What is going on with this bloody contract? It appears that every time they near agreement something else crops up. It was supposed to be signed on numerous occasions and yet it still remains unsigned. If Moyes found a player who had procrastinated so long, he would have been shown the door, pronto!

In my opinion, Moyes cannot handle any player that might have something to say, whether it be criticism of tactics, hoofball etc. In short, he wants Yes-men. And that is what he gets for a minimum of £30k per week!

When he arrived, we were struggling against relegation and had a largely over-aged squad. He chose to play the old hoofball, build a team that worked their socks off. In that situation, it was the best we could do and we reaped the rewards. It was a squad and a playing style that perfectly suited DM?s preferences/capabilites.

As results kept on getting in, DM tried/tries to change it to more of a passing game, more attacking football, less hoofball. Neither the team (except Pienaar, Arteta and dare I say Andy Alehouse) nor the manager has any experience with this type of game. Moreover, to buy players for the old tactics is relatively easy and cheap. To buy players who can really add flair with the added bonus of workmanship, is very hard and very expensive.

As I see it, DM has a lot to learn in this department. He is no Arsène Wenger who experimented with an attacking passing style before he went to Arsenal. After 6 years of management, DM is still not the finished product. Moreover, he hasn?t been given the resources to buy the players he really wanted. We all know how DM looked during the last transfer period. He was dissapointed, and that is a big euphemism.

What to do next? Keep hold of DM and give him the time to learn the ?new? game, with the risk that he will walk away at an inappropriate time or that he won?t learn quick enough? Or to part ways in both parties best interest? I think Moyes could learn his trade quicker at a new club and it would give Everton the chance to get in a manager who IS experienced in the passing game and who IS able to convince continental hot shots to join us. But the thing is: I don?t see us getting this spectacular, passing-game, manager and moreover: Spurs got that manager and they?re in complete shambles at the moment.

I?m really not sure about the next step. I think DM can take us further, but it will take some time. I also think changing managers could be a breaking point that changes the future of the club. I?m just not sure that future would be better.

I?ve just been watching Sky Sports Sunday Supplement and they showed a newspaper article that Moyes had considered quiting in the summer but was talked out of it by Bobby Insane Robson.

Who does Moyes think he is ?

I?d expect such statements from Mourinho, but at least he has won the trophies to justify his arrogance.

Not only this, Moyes wants his wages doubled, hence the delay nonsense with his contract.

There has to be better, more successful managers out there who would work for Everton for £3.5M per year.

I?m also sick of so-called experts constantly reminding us of how lucky we are in having him, it just goes to show how big our demise has been as a club.

Get rid, Kenwright.

Richard, "we scrape the coppers out of our piggy bank for Fellaini". So £15m is coppers, hey? Some of you hail Moyes for what he has done at the club with ?no money?. But at the end of the day, last season and this, he has spent nearly £40m. Not bad money for a manager who never has any, is it?

Mike, totally agree mate, compared to some clubs' transfer kitties, we don?t compare, but the way some fans make it sound, it?s as if the man only has a couple of million each season to spend ? that's the point I was trying to make.

Tommy, could not agree more; the man has started to believe his own hype, he is forever telling us about his top-ten finishes but in 10-20 years time the only record we will have on paper is the worst top flight points total ever ? also did he not break another record of lowest ever goals scored?

These stats stay in our history, finishing 5th is long forgotten. Don't get me wrong, he has done quite a good job, but you would think he had spent fuck all and won the Champions League with how he speaks himself up. And Mike, you may be right on the expenditure of the pre-season but it would be interesting to see that over the past three years; I am sure only Spurs out of the said clubs has spent more, I may be wrong.

I believe Moyes is the man to take us forward; if he is given the backing he deserves, he can take the club forward. He is ambitious and, if he had got the signings he wanted in the summer, I think Everton would be in a much better position in the league. He went after Stephen M'bia, Mutinho, Wright-Phillips, Riera, Joaquín, Ramsey, Love... I think if the board backed him as they said they would, no-one would be moaning.

This doesn?t make sense. If Robson?s speech was in July and it persuaded him to emulate Clough and Robson?s long term tenures at Forrest and Derby, then why was he moaning about not being able to compete and walking around with a face like a slapped arse until the end of the transfer window? Surely, if you belive this article, he had reconciled himself to having to look for bargains and wheel and deal?

As for loyalty, well, publically moaning about being unable to bring in ?quality? surely must show his lack of faith and loyalty in the players he has (probably rightly too as we know certain players have hit their level / are punching above their weight).

As an aside, Mr Moyes appears to have adopted a blinkered approach to what constitutes ?quality?. If it isn?t expensive, it isn?t quality appears to be his new mantra.

Diarra - £6 million
Zaki - loan deal at Wigan
Pienaar - £2.8 million (ish)
Arteta - £ £2.8 million
Ashley Young £8 million (compared to Fellaini?s fee)
Half of the Arsenal squad.

Look across the park at some the dross the got signed (Bruno Cherou anyone?) over the last few years and you can see why quality and cost are not always that closely related.

I have a feeling that our esteemed manager has begun to get the Allardyce syndrome ? where he thinks he needs a ?big club? with ?big money? to kick on his career. And we all know how going to a ?big club? prepared to chuck around ?big money? worked out for Big Sam.

Basically I think our man Mr Moyes needs to learn how to work smarter in the transfer market.

As a simple matter of fact David Moyes is the most successful manager we have had in the PL and Europe in the same period. This is why he commands the respect of professionals like Bobby Robson. The faith that the the club has had in him, with the continuity and progress that has produced is also widely recognised ? possibly envied.

Michael?s comment at the top made me think ? the transfer window ist geschlossen alright, but when it reopens, where will we be? Twenty games into the season. Points? It could be bad ? bad enough for the board to consider replacing the manager. Could this possibly have any bearing on the ?signing of the contract? situation?

Felliani can?t run, he doesn?t want to be the leader in the team as he is too young and Moyes only decided to stay because Bobby Robson inspired him to.

Billy loaned another vast amount of cash on Friday and the team have won 2 out of a possible 10 games

Prenno slags off the Park End for being the new Kemlyn Road, although I can?t remember LFC failing to win any of their first 5 home fixtures of the season.

Kenwright?s friend and mentor Sir Phillip Green has so much cash he?s decided to go shopping in Iceland and the BBC?s sports editor is so bored with the credit crunch he cheers himself up by making up a story about a possible takeoever bid.

Who could possibly manage a football club in this climate? Superman!

Can I ask why he needs to ?get over yerself?? He is just stating a point that is true, one semi is not really a cup record to be proud of in 6 years, is it?

One more thing, "This made Moyes reflect on how lucky he was, so he stayed." Last time I looked David, Moyes still hadn?t signed the contract.

Moyes should stick to players and tactics he knows best rather than playing around with systems which are totally foreign to him. He is clueless about trying ?to do it like Wenger? and no decent player of the type the Arsenal man attracts would sign for him. He?s a hoof-ball specialist and our only hope under him is for him to go back to basics. Don?t know whether I shall go to watch it, though!

Personally I am getting fed up with this line of mailbag/ article. Moyes is signing, so whether he is the right man or not seems slightly irrelevant. Importantly the Club?s owners do think he?s right.

Granted the results are crap at the moment but form is temporary. Moyes will be with us for the foreseeable future so instead of taking continual potshots let?s get behind him and the team.

Tony, We don?t have the players capable of playing direct hoofball. We don?t have pace, we don?t have a target man and our midfield is lightweight.

We looked at our best last season when we got the ball down and played some decent stuff with the likes of Arteta, Osman, Cahill and Pienaar all combining, moving and interchanging.

We have a lot of small technically gifted players, we should play football on the ground and play to their strengths.

Hoofball won?t work. The fans aren?t asking for Arsene Wenger football, we just want the team to actually string a few decent passes together and look composed.

I don?t think this is Moyes dithering at all. I think that all this "takeover" talk is more than just hot air or Mihir Bose talking crap. I have no proof, just a feeling, that Moyes, as he?s said time after time, would sign today but EFC?s lawyers are preventing it until any takeover is completed or binned. Any new owners wouldn?t necessarily want Moyes on a five-year contract. I think that there?s more to this than meets the eye (light blue touch paper and retire....)

Another thing, I remember a discussion on the radio ages ago when Spurs were (again) in complete turmoil off the pitch with buyouts, management problems etc., and the presenter listed a number of clubs who suffered ON the pitch when there was a problem OFF it, the conclusion being that the aforementioned problems definitely affect team performance.
