Moyes now, who next?

Comments (31)

There have been many articles on this site about the doom and gloom of Moyes signing for another five years. There has also been the odd article backing Moyes and looking at the bigger picture of where we have come over the last few years.

Personally, I have always been a Moyes supporter after starting supporting the Blues in the late 80s, I have seen the incompetence of Walker Smith, etc. I'm glad that we are not consistently flirting with relegation. However, after the summer's inactivity, the stadium debate, the dreadful start to the league campaign, out of two cups already and the long drawn-out contract saga of Moyes, my faith in him is wavering.

If this season carries on the way it is, we are going to be in serious relegation trouble; with Hull doing so well, it looks like a big club could go down this year. With the likes of Tottenham and already Newcastle going to change managers, they will get instant results as players want to impress the new manager. If results don't change, and Moyes won't leave, and we have no money in January for reinforcements, what are our chances of staying in the Premier League? If we do go down, with our debt, we could easily be the next Forest, Sheff Wed, Coventry, Leicester, etc.

However, for all you fans out there saying Moyes should leave, who would come in? There is no way we could attract a big name like Mancini or Laudrup or Aragones. Although these names are out of work, they would want to manage a club in the Champions League (we are not), we are not even in the Uefa Cup now this season, we have no money and we are in 16th in the table. We also have the uncertainty over the stadium. We are not an attractive proposition for a new manager, let alone billionaire owner!

Therefore, if Moyes was to leave as some fans are calling for, we would only end up with the likes of Allardyce or Curbishley or Mick McCarthy! Are these names really better than Moyes? Is the grass really greener without Moyes?

This isn?t intended as an attack on Moyes, I?ve done enough of that but, for the money we offered him in his new contract, we could have attracted plenty of candidates. While a big name would be great, there are managers who have worked under them and are now getting results.

I?d be happy with the likes of Pim Verbeek the Australian manager who worked under Gus Hiddink. He is a straight talker, doesn?t play favourites and plays his football on the floor with an adaptable system. He is only an example, but I believe he is on something like $2 million Australian dollars a year. We also had Dick Advocaat sign for that type of money before he pulled out. So it goes to show plenty of good managers would love to manage an EPL club on a deal worth the £3.5 million pounds per year offered to Moyes.

Any thoughts of Moyes being replaced are void anyway. I think he would be kept even if we were relegated. Just like with Tesco I think the board have a mental exclusivity deal with Moyes. I don?t think they even considered a replacement.

Anybody who may be looking for a job at the moment. As has been mentioned on here many times before, how much longer are we going to have to put with the appalling football served up by our current manager.

Again on the topic of Moyes, I just want to bring up this little tidbit... Am I the only one or is there anyone else who thinks that Moyes has reached the point with this team that he cannot get anymore out of most of them? (Excluding the ones he bought recently in the transfer window, of course.)

I know I’m only dreaming but Mourinho has just stated he wants to come back to the EPL once his contract with Inter runs out in 2011. Hope we don’t have to wait that long for some change and we would need that takeover. It does show that the EPL is the ultimate place for a manager to test his metal, that has to be some attraction for top managers. At the moment I’d be happy if Moyes could just make the team show some balls and get back to basics.

No points Vs Man U or maybe one if we get lucky, 6 pointers Vs Bolton and Fulham.

We may be the only one of the bottom 3 that has no chance of getting a new coach in and thus have no chance of the players upping it for the new guy and improving.

The 17mill deal is, in effect, a vote of confidence from the Chairman to Moyes, Oh for it to be followed up by, as sometimes happens, THE SACK.

I think as long as Bill Kenwright is the chairman of Everton he won’t sack Moyes, even if we get relegated.
First of all, he would have to pay him off and then pay for a new manager. It ain’t gonna happen under Kenwright I’m afraid.

It’s a bloody shame.

Behave yourselves! It was only LAST week that the Moyestro signed a £17M contract to keep him here for another five years. As long as Kenwright is in charge, he will remain our manager be it in Prem or lower divisions. Only a take-over will bring about a change and the existence of THAT contract is, in itself, another barrier to that happenning any time soon.

This is one of the few arguments the pro-Moyes brigade have left. They claim if Moyes goes then we will be stuck with Allardyce or Keegan etc. In reality for £17 million we can virtually take our pick of up and coming guys who will take us to the top.

Only after Moyes has been gone for a few years will people look back and realise what a great job he has done in impossibly difficult circumstances. He is the third best manager this club has ever had, after Kendall and Catterick.

This thread is completely pointless as now he has his new contract WE CAN?T AFFORD TO SACK HIM as financially we?d have to either: Sell our best players, or add more to our overdraft JUST TO PAY OFF this underperforming, one-dimentional, overated & greedy man compensation!!!

Just to pick up on a point raised (and reiterated) above: changing managers doesn?t actually bring about a dramatic or instantaneous change in results in the vast majority of cases. Yes, occasionally, it can work (usually when you replace the existing manager with a better manager ? as we did when we replaced Smith with Moyes). But most of the clubs who change manager in an attempt to avoid relegation still end up being relegated!

Personally, I?d love to see someone like Laudrup at the club, but I think it?s unlikely. It?s not the champions league problem or the salary on offer problem, it?s the absolute lack of money on offer to strengthen the squad.

Hand on heart, I think you?d struggle to find anyone in football who really believes they could have done job at Everton over the last 6 years than Moyes has managed. The ones who do think they could have are either Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho or completely deluded.

Of course it?s possible that someone could now do a better job with the players at their disposal than Moyes, but think very few serious managers would be prepared to stake their reputation on it. They would want serious funds to get their own players in, simple as that. And we don?t have serious funds unfortunately.

he names you have been throwing up are just laughable. Fan power took over at Newcastle and look what it did for them. I am so glad that the fans are not in control at Everton.

Moyes is the best thing that has happened to the club since the Kendall years. Fact. If he hadn?t signed for us 6 years ago we would now be where Nott Forest are. And he is still the best man to keep us moving forward as a club bit by bit. Stability is so important. I can?t believe that some of you want a new manager in just to get the honeymoon points in.

Wake up and be careful what you wish for.

I?ve always been a supporter of David Moyes but now I?m starting to draw comparisons between his reign and Eriksson?s reign with England: has done a competent job; good, effective plan A; unable to come up with alternatives when plan A isn?t working; unable to change games with substitutions; to scared to attack teams of high quality.

Personally, I think we could do a lot worse than going for Mowbray. There are also a lot of good managers in the Championship at the minute.

For all the doom and gloom on this site, just look on the bright side: if we carry on in the same vein for the rest of the season we would have 38 points from 38 games and we just might avoid the drop.

On the new contract, what was the hurry in Moyes signing it as it doesn't run out until next year? It should have been witheld to see if he can turn this terrible start around.

There’s no point debating this. Kenwright signed him up and we re stuck with his rubbish unless we pay him off with a huge amount.

Cheers Bill.

Sadly, we have no option but to get behind David Moyes and the team. Better that he feels our support than not, given that Bill has just awarded him 5 years and a windfall of £18m. FFS Bill!

I think what has depressed me more than Moyes actually signing is most Evertonians? reaction to it. It seems apart from the odd one or two of us on here most people seem pleased about it.

I?d like to forecast the next 5 years under Moyes:
2008-09: 15th place out of FA Cup 4th round
2009-10: 10th place. Dodd rejoices at the ?improvement? on 15th the previous season.
2010-11: 12th but reach the semi of Carling Cup. People accept Moyes needs more time but it?s brilliant we reached the semi.
2011-12: 15th. Moyes signs a 10-year contract for £10 million a year making him THE best paid manager. Evertonians rejoice blaming last season on the fact he had unresolved contract issues which affected the team. Think of the stability.
2012-13: Moyes signs Heskey.

Matthew, there are a lot of quality managers out there who would like to be paid £17m over 5 years. There are only 3 better paid managers in the PL I believe.

Arogones? Please. Do we really want a racist sack of shyte like that at the club?

Alan Clarke: You missed the following:

2009-10 - Moyes presents the fans with a new five year plan
2010-11 - Moyes admits that he cannot compete with the big 4. They?ve got more money than he has (he neglects to mention the smaller 15 that continuously play better football than us)
2011-12 - Moyes hails Pip Neville as England?s number 1 midfielder and urges England manager, Slaven Billic, to bring Pip back into the fold.
2012-13 - Moyes addresses the deficiencies in the team by presenting the fans with ? wait for it ? a new five-year plan. Pip Neville signs a 5-year contract as reward for his sterling efforts in a blue shirt.

For me, Moyes is the man for now. However, I see on the OS that Andars Limpar has started in management in the lower leagues in Sweden. Maybe if he has some success there..... I am sure it would be attacking football!!!!

The 5 year mega-bucks deal Moyes has just been gifted (undeserved in my opinion) by his ?pal? Kenwright is a golden handshake, anyone taking over the club will now have to pay him off with a handsome lump sum. The obvious thing to have done would have been to hold back any new contract for the manager until the takeover was complete, giving the new owners a chance to bring in someone with a real footballing pedigree instead of lumbering them with a £17million pound headache. Another farce fit for the stage from SuperBill.

I’m usually quite happy to support Bill because I’ve always believed that beneath the bullshit and veneer he presents, he’s a decent Evertonian with the club’s interests at heart. But giving this oaf of a manager such a large contract makes me question just how much in touch with reality he is. The only defence I can offer is that Moyes has enjoyed much support from the fans in the past. Perhaps Bill sees this as a signifier of Moyes’ skills as a manager? God only knows, but the sooner Moyes gets his job at Celtic, the better. Anything, even Allardyce, would be an improvement on the miserable, dour, negative man that is David Moyes.

Whatever our thoughts are about Moyes, his contract and ability, we are about to find out a few things very soon.

He continues as he is with terrible results for us all and then gets sacked with a handsome pay packet (any manager would have signed the contract regardless) or he shows he has what it takes to drag us through this and then start to play some decent footy.

He needs our support right now and more importantly he needs the senior players in the team to get a grip and concentrate on their work. Also boys, dont think that only the next game is tough because the rest of the season is going to be tough.
