Kenwright said no to Lerner

Comments (19)

Today`s NSNO story that Bill Kenwright said "no thanks" to Randy Lerner before the MBNA tycoon took over Aston Villa is one of the more baffling aspects of our chairman's continuing tenure.

Doug Ellis told me, personally, two years ago that Everton had been the American's first choice, situated as we are, so near to his home and business base in Cheshire. Now Doug's a tough old swine but an expert angler and he wouldn`t have needed a second cast to have hooked his fish, I can tell you!

We are only left to wonder why Kenwright said "no" to the man who has proved a model owner at Villa. Was it the money? Hardly, I think it much more likely that Bill wanted to continue to wield much more influence than Ellis's role of Life President affords him these days at Villa Park. It would be nice to hear what Neil Pearse has to say about this. He has been adamant that there have been no offers to buy Everton, despite numerous rumours.

No offence David but I hope like hell that NSNO article is rubbish. If Kenwright turned down Lerner I all but give up. He would have been a perfect owner for us.

David, it wouldn?t surprise me if what you say is true. Everton aren?t for sale. I honestly believe that Bill Kenwright does not wish to line his pockets. He?s enough money to do him. He most certainly wants to line his ego, however, and being boss at Everton is as good as it gets for him. If he loved Everton he?d be gone by now... but it?s being chairman of Everton that he loves.

Have read the related story. I’m not a fan of Bill as it is but if there is any truth to this I will sign up once and for all with the get rid of Kenwright faction.

I cannot think of one good reason why we didn’t accept his investment if it was offered. He has helped Aston Villa to no end and has still maintained the clubs culture. If it was down to Bill’s condition that he remain on the board than he is no Evertonian.

FFS don’t say it’s true. Is there anything you see at Aston Villa right now that you wouldn’t welcome at Everton? Honest bunch of players with a British core. Charitable sponsorship. Integrity in dealing with misfit players. Sensible managed budget/debt (yes they got smashed by Chelsea’s zillions the other week).

Oh I get it: a chairman who doesn’t need to fuel his bloody ego. This must be wind-up as it can’t get worse than this surely??!!?

Midlands newspapers reported at the time that Lerner ?had first looked at a club nearer to his home but got little encouragement?. I don?t think he ever made an offer for Everton because only recently has BB been interested in anything more than ?investment?. Even if he sells the trainset now, I think he will still expect a job in the signal box!

As somebody very close to Everton told me recently, "Bill has missed out on two great opportunities for Everton ? King?s Dock and Randy Lerner and will now have to pay the price !"

I suspect both were related to his fear of losing control. He has now compounded these errors by giving Moyes THAT contract!

But that?s our Bill!

For those three mistakes alone, the man deserves the disdain that is heaped upon him. I?m sure more will follow!

If this can be proved to be true then as they say in all the best courtroom drama?s:

"Ladies & Gentlemen, there rests the case for the prosecution."

I’d like to know who these ’ very close to Everton’ people actually are.

Whilst I have always thought BK’s ego and love of turning everything into a stage like drama has been his weakness, until people actually name names this sort of thing is just tittle-tattle.

If Sir Philip Carter or Robert Elstone or even Fatboy Wyness said it I might believe it. If it was an ex-player who witnessed a beer fuelled conversation in the Alex Young suite or a journalist who ’ has it on good authority’ then it’s just another chain in the chinese whisper and worth not a lot.

It would not surprise me given the incompetence at our Club off the pitch. However, just now I’m more concerned at the on the pitch situation. We need to see some wins and soon.

Karl,I don’t give a stuff whether you believe me or not. In his post David quotes Doug Ellis who I know he used to work for.And Craig,Lerner wouldn’t be bidding for Liverpool when they’d only just been aquired by Gillett and Hicks, would he?
Of course,it’s tittle-tattle,that’s what makes up the Mailbag. It’s just history now, anyway!

I read an article in a local newspaper ahead of the takeover of Aston Villa and Randy Lerner was QUOTED as saying he looked at Everton but was told they were not for sale.

I am not Kenwright’s biggest critic but know when he fcuks up ... he definitely fcuked up when he ignored Lerner.

I will try and find an online copy of the same article but dont hide from the truth guys. Lerner DID want Everton and was totally ignored!

Kenwright for what ever reason must be the clearest example of being careful what you wish for. Hands up how many of us (yes I was one) who really wanted Bill to take over the club, on the basis he is one of us? I hang my head in shame.

NTL, Kings Dock, Trevor Birch, Randy Lerner.... Dear oh dear, see a pattern emerging?

Everton FC has been grossly mismanaged for a number of years and we are now paying the price.

I remember this at the time, Lerner was apparently told he could invest in Everton, but BK wanted to remain chairman, must have been a no brainer for him.
When Bill says he wants ?investment?, does he really mean to sell the club?
