Sad for future Evertonians

Comments (27)

Like all of us, I have a task trying to convince my 7-year-old son to follow Everton (like Dad) rather than all the rest of his school mates with Man U & Liverpool.

I took him to the football museum at Preston yesterday. The guy in the shop asked him which team does he support, he said Everton. He was then asked who was his fave player, he the turned to me and siad "Dad who is our best player", and just had to reply "we haven't got one".

I have been supporting Everton since 1977, and for the first time I can't think of one of them who is currently "our best player". What a pathetic shambles it is, after 6½ years Moyes still thinks shite like Hibbert can cut it in this league. While we have this manager, expect more of the same.

Joe, to be honest, at first I thought you were talking nonsense ?of course we have a best player. Then thinking about it, I?m stuck.

Great teams make it difficult to pick their best player, it?s a matter of opinion. Ordinary teams usually have one who stands out. With shite teams the best player is also difficult to pick. So what about us? Yeah, I?m still stuck.

OK I will have a go at this one and say Pienaar. I think he could walk straight into the Arsenal team!

Yobo and Lescott close, Yak and Cahill are even closer but I think Pienaar is the one who could make the step up.

More pressing and worrying things for me at this minute are the real potential that, unless Everton Football Club wakes out of it slumber, then we are in for a real relegation dogfight this season and there is a big possibility we could go down.

I just watched the Newcastle game and at least they fought for everything and showed some real passion, hasn't taken Joe Kinnear 6 years to instill that has it? Whereas watching Everton concede a goal now is depressing: shoulders sag, heads drop and the fragile confidence drops out of sight for the rest of the game.

Even at HT on Saturday at no point did I believe Everton would win that match despite looking in complete control against a fragile Arsenal team. Conceded a stupid goal and then heads drop and we just revert into a little shell for the rest of the match, offering nothing as an attacking force. It was painful and sad to watch.

I have no doubts that Saturday against United will bring more of the same and Moyes will once again come out with more of his crap about the top four being all richer than Everton (boring). Since Everton sold Rooney, Moyes has had more than his fair share of cash to spend, just look at £6 million on Beattie and £8.6 million on Andy Johnson. Two strikers who where only here two years...

Under Moyes, all we ever hear is the word rebuilding. That's all we'll ever do. He should have long had a settled team by now, capable of producing the goods, but still there's no shape, no blend, no passion and no ideas. Our football is shocking under him and we look no better at times than when he first took over.

I want to see him bring about a dramatic change, I want to see Everton take the game to United on Saturday not just sit there and wait for the inevitable and them drop our heads again. Come on Moyes ? No more excuses: You have been here long enough, you have had money to spend and its all your team playing the football that you wish them to play so let's do something before it's too late.

Well,

for starters Cahill, Arteta, Pienaar, Yakubu. Troughout the 90s, all I can think of are Kanchelskis and Big Dunc.

While we are currently playing like a shadow of last year's side, it is a good point that it's hard to pick the best player out of most good sides. I?m for Tim Cahill, given our success rate with him in the side, and he is one player I enjoy watching. In terms of skill I?d say Arteta but he is well off the pace now.

So many good players it’s hard to pick a star? You just have to be kidding!

It has to be Mikel Arteta. Ranked the 7th best midfielder in the league: http://www.premierleague.com/page/Top10Midfielders/0,,12306,00.html , and 17th best player, in all positions, in the league: http://www.premierleague.com/page/ActimIndex, by far and away our best player and contributor, but so, so alone!!

LOL was thinking the same. I’m stuck on which ’hero’ to have emblazzed on a new Everton kit. Into October now and still can’t pinpoint one for this season 2008/09. I suppose Cahill for his endeavour at the derby. I didn’t notice any other player in blue. Arteta missing. Osman missing. Lescott shite. Yobo shite. Jags - good effort, shame crap player. Yak - diver.

By a country mile, Cahill; when we do turn it around, he will be the one who lights the spark and no matter what these people say about him in 4-4-2 he is the only player we have with some bottle and a prescence, he winds opponents and their support up and is our only so-called big player who does not hide against the top four teams ? unlike Arteta, whom I cannot recall to have a good game against any of them. He also seems to have an attitude thar cares for this club of ours.

Cahill has scored against Liverpool, ManUtd and Chelsea. Don’t recall if he has scored against Arsenal before. Definately our best player at the moment, especially with the shite disappearing acts he’s having to play with. Our yardstick should be measured against playing the top teams. The other players just bottle it when they’re up against superior opponents. Much like our manager I’m afraid.

Arteta is our best player and our star player.

Unfortunately, I think he’s given up with Moyes and will probably be off to Spain in the transfer window. I would be upset playing out of position on the right and having to play with Hibbo.

Just tell your son that life is full of disappointment and supporting Everton is all part of it :0).......
.....and that if he has a favourite player then they will be sold to balance to books !

Jason - He scored the opener at the Emirates a couple of years ago in the 1-1 draw. Not the most talented player in the squad but undoubtedly the most important. He wouldn't have let his head drop on Saturday like the others did. Arteta as captain is a joke, once Timmy is back he should get the armband

Well I would of said Arteta or Pienaar and not forgetting Baines and Cahill, the Yak, Saha. Tell him that at the moment we can't decide because certain players don't like to pass to their team mates, either that or they think that god plays for us!

For God’s sake! So you couldn’t name one off the top of your head? Stop beating yourself up over something so trivial!

We have lots of good players and you could easily put Yakubu, Arteta, Lescott ( admittedly not playing too well just now, but previous 100 games were near faultless ) or Cahill on your shirt and get respect from other Clubs’ fans. Talk to other fans and you’ll find most of them have quite a bit of respect for Everton now - certainly a lot more than 4 or 5 years ago.

Be proud and stop making a tit of yourself, especially in front of your son - you are selling EFC short.

You shouldn't have to convince your son to support Everton. In my family you are born a Evertonian and if its instilled correctly at a early age then he will understand what we and the club is about.

Forget how we are doing at the moment because things will pick up. I started going the game in 1992 when I was 12 and look how shite we was then. One of my first memories was the Wimbledon game. I could've easily chosen a different team but I love us when we're shite and when we are great. Thats why we are different to LFC fans and Utd fans. They are the worst breed out there.

So, if that's the kind of football fan you want your son to be, then go get him a Torres shirt or a Rooney shirt. If you're passionate about EFC then tell him how proud you are to be a blue!!! Coz thats what I tell my 8-year-old and when we are getting beat in every derby match and against the Mancs on Saturday, he will still be playing out in the street with his Cahill 17 shirt on and that's because he is proud to!!!

I’m fairly sure that Cahill scored against Arsenal (home), Chelsea (away, scissor kick), Man United (away) and Liverpool (away) last season - although the derby goal may have been the season before.

For the record my favourite player is Osman. I know he has flaws and his passsing can be off at times, but I appreciate anyone who works that hard that consistently and he has scored some great goals (Watford, Larissa, Brann).

Our most consistent player at the moment is, without doubt, Jagielka.

Yes- ok, for all you you having a go. The point i’m trying to make is our better players aren’t performing. I would have said Cahill, but his attitude afyter the foul against the Twats meant he is suspended (again). Prob Pienaar is our best.

Give me Sheedy, Sharp, Reid, Bracewell, Southall, Latchford, Steven, Southall,Nevin etc any day over this lot though.

Nevin! Jesus Christ, what the fuck did he do for us? He has no right to be mentioned in the same breath as those you mentioned and not in the same breath as Cahill either. Scored the odd classy goal but that was it, he spent more time talking about music.

As a scouser exiled down in the south, I fear I will have the same drama, when my little lad grows up. He is 10 months old, and has an Everton strip and other bits bobs with the Everton badge on. What happens when he starts school, and everyone down here either supports The "Shizer", United or Chelsea. How can I convince him to follow Evertion?? I don?t know!!

Paul, I had the same problem, all my sons friends ?support? Chelski or Manure, mainly Chelski. So at the time he became properly interested in football he wanted the Chelsea kit, we were bottom of the league at the time and our kit had Chang splashed across the front. I decided to buy him the Chelsea kits and I even took him up to see them (fucking awful, I know).

But then I took him to Goodison and luckily enough it was the Arsenal game a couple of seasons ago. After that there was no contest. Trouble is I've taken him up to Goodison a few more times and it's never been the same (including Chelsea semi).

I think you've just got to show them what real fans are like and the passion you have for Everton and if he's anything like my son youll have no probs.

Well to be honest I had the same problem in school, I started being a blue when I was about 7, having made a change from Aston Villa, but I didn’t become a passionate blue till I hit senior school, I was shocked at how all the kids liked Liverpool and Man U and this was Chesterfield!
You’d expect a few Sheff Wed, Utd, Derby or Forrest maybe, but everyone was a kopite or a Manc, so in a way I became a blue out of spite, to this day I hate it when I see kids wearing a Sky 4 shirt!
