Why don't WE loan Beckham

Comments (25)

News today that David Beckham may be spending a few months on loan to Inter Milan. But why don't Everton make a move to sign the England talisman? The team is desperate for width and the whole club is in need of a boost. Such a move would see us in the word's newspapers everyday and could only act as a boost in Blue Bill's search for a buyer.

So how about it, Moysey? Do something dangerous for once in your life ? bring Beckham to Everton ? you'd sell out every game!

I’m surprised Neville didnt have a word and bring him over to us (Neville finally proving he completely useless now??). I’m no fan of Beckham’s, but he’d have given us exposure and definately given us something else on the pitch. A decent cross for starters. Can’t remember what one of them look like from a blue shirt.

Hmmmm, now let my think about this.

Milan - £150k a week and playing in one of the big names in Italina football

or

Everton - £20 and a packet of polos to get a sore neck watching the ball pass by and getting kicked everywhere.

It’s a tough one

Or we could heat up six-inch nails and jab them into our eyes.

I would prefer we played Gosling on the wing instead aside from the wage issue we don?t need a showpony for our circus .

Joeynkoo, Neville will have a word with him and with any United player who?s over the hill. Scholes on loan in January will be the next step in his plan to make us Man Utd old boys.

Beckham has Advertising power, he sells shirts all over the world, something Everton dont do enough of, I agree he may be passed it to some degree but his delivery of crosses (deadball/in play) is still quality much better than anyone else in the squad.

Great Question, at whatever his wages would be on loan, would he bring it back in Merchandise and advertising?

If he would I would gladly take him on loan.

Good post, Mike. If you add to your points increasing our profile in football it could lead to a takeover.

According to Setanta, AC are only making a token payment towards his wages but I can?t see Mrs Spice prefering Bold St. to the shops of Milan!

I had exactly the same thoughts.

His wages would obviously be a major stumbling block but just think of the increased revenue that would be guaranteed to follow, let alone the increase in exposure.

Overall I would expect the cost to be neutral.

Downsides:
- clearly past his best (but still better than some of our current lot),
- maybe, just maybe, Moyes has his eye on someone better?
- could we trust our merchandising dept (or more specifically JJB) to get it right so that income offsets costs?

Gate sales and Shirt Sales would pay the £150k a week he would want. He may be old but he still delivers the best balls from a wide position in the world. The Yak would love it!! I would love it!!

Because he wouldn’t want to. And his Mrs wouldn’t want to. And it does nothing for his profile where as he can increase it in another market by going to Milan.

Plus if that detriment to British society wore the royal blue I’m not sure I’d feel the same about the club ever again.

We outsourced our merchandising to JJB. We get a fixed amount of cash in return.

Therefore, we wouldn’t make a penny on Backham’s shirt sales (and he probably has merchandising rights written into his contract anyway).

Someone stated that Arteta is a better player, can't Beckham beat the first man with both free-kicks and corners, therefore giving us opportunities to score? Hmmmm we don't have that at the moment do we.

Some people live in a dreamworld.

Offer him £500k a week and he wouldn?t come here. AC Milan is a superior club in EVERY way.

I work for them and essentially the deal was arranged through Capello so Beckham could still play for England during the MLS off season.

Milan will pay part of his wages so a good deal for all parties as he wouldn't be playing for LA Galaxy anyway.

When I read the news, I did have a similar thought. It’ll never happen, but to be fair, he knows that at Everton he’d be playing every game, whereas that’s not so sure at Milan.

Beckham is a consummate professional and I’ve got a lot of admiration for the man. The way he handled himself throughout his career and the way he made Capello u-turn to become an integral part of the title-winning Madrid side shows that there’s a lot more to him than the hype.

He’d surely be an asset to any club and at least we know that he’d be better at corners than Arteta.

What an absolutely cracking idea!

Whore ourselves out to a media circus, so we can have a player whose only discernable attribute is dead ball situations... and all for the pleasure of selling a few shirts.

What was it George Best said about him...

I?d be more excited if we just loaned Joey Barton. If ever our team needed a yard-dog rather than a fancy-dan it?s now!

Beckham's wages at LA Galaxy are not where he is getting all the money from, it's from his image rights. There is a wage cap in the MLS so his wages are just a token gesture.

Dave Rings Vicky in the east wing long distance " Hi babe where do ya fancy pouting next Everton or Milan"

Vicky " Where’s that Evington then"

Dave "In Liverpool babe Capitol of Culture this year"

"Ohh Is it " says Vicky " What’s that mean then "

Becks "Don’t know babe Ill ring me dad later"

Back to Vicky " No me finks Milan’s best Davey Wavey I’ve always fancied living in France"

Beckham makes $6.5 million/yr guaranteed. The MLS has a salary cap of ~2 million/yr/team but the "Beckham Rule" allows a team one slot to go beyond the cap...to attract ageing "superstars" and whatnot. (I believe a team can also trade their slot to another team for a max of 2 salary exceptions...it’s all rather Byzantine, actually).
