I see David Moyes is back playing his old record: "Our strikers must work harder." Apparently, Yakubu, Saha and Co should be back fighting for every ball "as we just haven't got players capable of playing pretty balls to feet." Now whilst that tempts the question as to "why not, after six years?", I can't help thinking that his destruction of Beattie and Johnson as effective strikers has taught our manager nothing.
Whilst I agree that forwards should always put in a good shift, few top-notch finishers have ever expected to be covering every blade of grass as Moyes demands of them. Surely, 'being available' up front is the most likely means of scoring rather than via the headless chicken approach so beloved of this genius.
I haven't the slightest doubt that Yakubu will not be with us for long and whilst Saha will do everything initially to impress his manager, I doubt whether he has any chance of maintaining his career record of 1 goal in 3 under this regime.
Still, only five more years to endure, eh?

What Moyes was trying to point out was that our strikers don?t ?put in a shift? and can?t expect it laid on a plate for them. The Yak?s body language is appalling whilst Saha looks lost half the time. They MUST get back and do their stint like everybody else is expected to.
Also, how bad must especially Osman, Arteta and Pienaar, let alone the other players being labelled incapable of playing pretty balls to feet? What a ridiculous thing to say! So WBA have better players? OK they?re not winning games but they play it to feet etc, and their biggest problem seems to be their relatively toothless attack and porous defence ? but we can hardly start throwing stones in that department!
One of AJ?s biggest problems, IMO (and lots have people have said this), is that he didn?t turn round and say "What the fuck was that?", instead he?d charge around after shit balls hoofed vaguely in his direction wearing himself down constantly, so that when he did get a sniff, he might not be as sharp as he could have been if he hadn?t just been doing shuttle runs courtesy of our Toblerone footed defence.
Why Moyes is trying to alienate himself from a selection of exciting "youth" players along with some established first-teamers is beyond me.
Brian of course the manager is telling him to buck up his ideas, as he hasn?t scored in 5/6 games. The Yak has come out and praised Moyes, confirming he is in the best shape of his life. He has probably ran more in the season he has been with us than the whole of his Borough career.
We do not have the midfield to allow our forwards to wait, hand on hips for the killer ball so I have no problem with a manager telling a forward they have to work for their goals.
Are you taking over for Marsh this week, as I doubt he will post unless he comes on to condemn Moyes for not not bringing on Vaughan earlier (which may be justifiable).
Then there are some things that he says or does that are criticised simply for the sake of moaning at him.
Asking your strikers to work hard is one of these.
I think we all saw what a difference that attitude of chasing and harrying their defenders did on Saturday. And this was against the best team in the world.
All he has said is that at the moment they need to be working hard to help give the team a platform as we are not currently palying well enough to simply put chance after chance on a plate for them without some hard work to get there.
Against the vast majority of teams if you put their defence under pressure when they have the ball, they will either hoof it or give it away. (A bit like ourselves!)
If we do that against the poor teams we will have more than enough of the ball to provide the strikers with the chances to keep them happy.
As we are constantly told, Ian Rush used to be their first line of defence. I think they did ok.
My understanding is that Moyes was saying that in recent performances the midfield have not been feeding the strikers as they can do and did do last season, so at the moment the strikers need to track and back and work harder to create chances.
We seem to have an abundance of players who only play well as individuals when the team plays well as a unit and this can lead to a catch-22 situation, which I think we were suffering from. However, I don?t think you can honestly believe that the ability of the existing midfield is no better than the one from 6 years ago! Watson, Gravesen and Unsworth or Pienaar, Arteta and Cahill?
Hopefully now the confidence will grow and the midfielders will start putting things on a plate for Yak, Saha and Co. We need 2 good wins tomorrow and Saturday.
As for Saha, I just don't rate him at all and think we got him 4 years past his sell-by date. It has to be Vaughan for me every time and only small cameo appearances for Saha if any at all. Even Big Vic deserves it more than Saha, who in all honesty would struggle at any club in the Premier League and not just here.
Bolton and Fulham are going to be quite different challenges, but at least the squad is together and should be up for it.
Vaughan is a another ?academy? striker who is just not good enough.
For instance, how often do we create a chance for one of our strikers to have a clear shot in front of goal? I can answer that question for you?..NEVER. If you think we do tell me the last time we did? Why do strikers at Arsenal score loads of goals? Because their team mates play to their strengths! Their manager put players in midfield capable of passing the ball to feet or through defences.
I?m not criticising DM here. I think I?m stating the bloody obvious. If we are going to play with two strikers! And if we want them to score goals then we have to start passing to them and creating chances for them. Let?s face it fella?s, we don?t ever do this. So when the Yak or Saha don?t score any goals for weeks on end think about the reasons why. Are they just shite? well their records speak for themselves.
Only Henry has scored more then the Yak in the league since the Yak signed for Portsmouth. (Yes Portsmouth who regularly scored hundreds of goals a season?..not) Saha?s record is something like 1 in 3 at United. Not as impressive but hey it?s still a very good record. I can guarantee all of you that they never picked the ball up on the half way line and beat 7 players before rounding the keeper to score all their goals. (They wouldn?t be here if they did) Their team mates created chances for them.
So to get to the end of all this, when DM chooses his team, does he expect the Yak to roam around tackling back chasing down midfielders in his own half to win the ball back, then make up the 60 or so yards back to the opposition penalty area to get on the end of a scuffed cross that?s aimed at no-one in particular? I?m sorry but for me part of the striker?s job IS to close down defenders when they have the ball.
This is more effective when you have two strikers sharing the load. But I want my strikers to have the energy to cause problems for the defenders when they get the ball, not be so fucking knackered that they can?t chase down or run clear or think straight enough to remain composed.
In my book a striker?s energy is best spent in the opposition half. If your midfield isn?t good enough to pass the ball to them then it?s firstly the managers fault for not buying players who can do the most basic and most important part of being a footballer??PASSING the BALL to one of YOUR TEAM MATES. Really?. it?s not hard. The running is the hard part.
It?s not true to say that Beattie and Johnson left better players than when they arrived. They left bereft of confidence and one-dimensional, straight jacketed by the demands of our tactics that required them to chase lost causes rather than be on the end of crosses (in Beattie?s case) or incisive balls behind the defence (in Johnson?s case). We made money on Johnson because of inflationary prices, we actually lost money on Beattie.
In actual fact neither of them were truly top notch strikers but, in my opinion, Yakubu IS. Let?s hope Moyes?s tactics don?t end up ruining him as well.
"If they can?t find me when I?m standing still they?ve got no fucking chance if I run around"....
All the best teams have players that work hard in every area of the pitch and modern football teams have to attack ? and defend ? as a team. Personally, I believe that a lot of the problems with conceding goals this season has been down to the lack of closing down done by the front players and the extra space this affords the opposition.
The best players are at the best (richest) clubs, and if you don?t have the quality to compete man for man, then you have to work that much harder to make sure that the quality you do have is able to make it?s presence felt.
When Yak came to us he could score goals. He slimmed down a bit and became a more powerful player, scoring well but roaming further. I doubt that he was under orders to do that, but felt that he was now a "better" player. I think that he would have scored on Saturday if he was the player he used to be.
It’s the old cliche about "defending from the front". No more, no less.
If the opposition have the ball, then Moyes wants our strikers to close down the players in their area of the pitch. Several times on Saturday Yakubu could be seen trotting near the United defenders and making no more than a token attempt to close them down, let alone try to win back possession.
If you don’t have the ball and your forward is trying to win it back for you, that puts an enormous burden on the rest of your team.
As usual though, the likes of Brian and Harry are overlooking these facts and simply using this quote as more ammunition to beat Moyes with.
Presumably, I’ll be labelled a "Moyes apologist" ?
As for being an apolgist for Moyes - his first five year plan needs no apology (in PL and Euro terms), but the next 5 couldn’t have got off to much of a poorer start. 45 minutes later, we have belief again. With the usual reservations, he now has the matter in his own hands. I think he’s been through some kind of personal crisis. I think, hope and pray that he’s through it.
1) EFC Vs Bayern; who is on the line, trying to stop their opener, on his own, having tracked back? SHEEDY!
2) Lisbon Vs Man Utd; who are on the posts defending a corner and then come hurtling out to play them off and keep on going to get back up front?? Charlton and Law!
Check and see.... nuff said
David if we had players capable of
"Playing pretty little balls to feet" we might actually win something or have got into the top four.
Robert I?m sure "playing pretty little balls to feet" would fill Goodison week in, week out.
Just a thought!
You could see right the way through the second half United just felt so uncomfortable having two strikers to keep tabs on and it's seen no better than when Fellaini scored his goal, Yakubu and Saha both occupy Ferdinand and Vidic?s attentions enough to allow Fellaini to get that leap ahead of Vidic and score the crucial goal.
Even have to compliment the fact he replaced two strikers with two strikers when the substitutions were made. There is no doubt that two up front does give the opposition far more to worry about and I would be tempted to go with the same line up again tonight to give them the chance to build on it. But how will it look if we reward our best performance of the season so far by breaking the team up?
Cahill is a massive player for us but surely sometimes you have to use common sense and say the same team deserves another chance to show if they can really get it together and start a run ? otherwise we are just going to be chopping and changing week-in, week-out, and you're never going to get a rhythm going at that rate.
It worked last season
Saha will come good... maybe starting tonight.
"...I’m sure Yak would have scored if he was the player he used to be..."
He wouldn’t have had the chance if he was the player he used to be.
He only got the ball as his chasing down of Ferdinand pressured him into a mistake.
He only missed as a fine Van der Sar save stopped him, just!
Ok the Yak is the second laziest player in the Prem.
Stelling to Kamara "Are Everton showing any signs of getting back into things"
Kammy "Yes they are Jeff, because Yakubu and Saha have finally decided to put a shift in" - went on to explain their chasing back and harrying of United’s defenders.
Have to say i’m with Moyes on this one.
Strikers get their rewards from working hard on the pitch. Finding space, leaving defenders and getting on the ball takes effort. So does closing down defenders and making it easier for their team mates to pick up loose balls. This is the job of all top strikers and all amateur strikers for that matter.
Last season Yakubu scored more and played better when he put himself about. That goes for every other player I have ever watched.
I am with Moyes and if Yakubu or any other player doesnt want to work hard then I suggest they pack their suitcases with clothes and head the Bentley down the M6!
Gareth - what I meant by about Yak was that he would have stuck that one in, giving vds no chance at his best as a striker last season He might take himself more ’seriously’ as a player now. We wish him the best tonight.
What the fuck is coming out his mouth lately??? Our Carra!!! Fuck off we don’t want a Carra or a shitty manc version who only raises his game against his arl club!
Also any one know how to change some of the link pages to English not Chinese.
Or it just my aunt’s damn computer/net.
No wait.. its gone again.. What the deuce!?
Good to see Andy J scored finally.
Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi
WE need Cahill
Millions of links to man utd, chelsea, arsenal etc etc.
Moan moan, but wouldn’t you think by now that evertonfc.com could show the match for £10 or something.
I think I’ll go live in Hong Kong
Comms on the OS I expect and radio mersey
Our crosses are also poor, all in all not too good a show so far. 1 Min to HT
Summary -: we have been in some good areas but choosing the time to pass and accuarcy of passes have been poor. Yak and Saha could do more , neither taking the risk to go early into space.
Overall a poor game but Bolton ahead on points at HT.
Certainly we’re not dominating as we all thought we would do.
Another chance for Bolton, 2 mins in and we are pinned in. Jags blocked shot. Howard saves another. Talk about Saha coming off .
Free kick to Bolton, over the bar.
We are totally pinned in.
Its on live commentary on Everton official site
Finally a cross frrom Arteta, to near post, 4 men in box no-one attacked it. Saha and Yakubu slow to react.
Everton coming back in but according to Goodlas, Bolton are there for the taking if only we could put 3 decent passes together - which we can't.
Tim Cahill on replacing Yakubu, he?s not pleased at all, just pushed Neville out the way coming off.
It sounds a dreadful game, our midfield just aren?t performing, but come to that neither is Saha.
Bolton just missed good chance.
That's your fault.
Everton corner, Liverpool scored!!!!
- Corner comes to nothing, but we're pressing: "Saha is sleeping again" according to commentator.
Another poor cross from Arteta, delivery has been poor all night, hit first defender again, when we had 4 players in box.
Goals everywhere in Premier League except Reebok!!
And it sounds like Arteta is having what is now unfortunatley a common game for him ........SHIT.
Bolton another corner cleared.
We can't hold the ball up front at all - there has been nothing in final 1/3rd for us.
Saha off - Anichebe on
Another good move ? 5 in box, but terrible cross from Lescott.
AND Vaughan is on the bench!
Arteta corner straight behind goal, complete waste.
I would rather have lost to the Mancs and Beat Bolton!
Saved by the bell!
Sorry, I just had to
WE?ve won!!!!
Anyone else a bit worried 442 and an attacking midfield couldn’t break down Bolton? OK we didn’t concede but they had plenty of chances.
Arteta in the middle? Castillo back in the side.. Come on Moyes inspire us!
Looking at the goal on MotD, Mikel and our newly creative right back captain did well as Pienaar ran to gather and put in the cross to give our man the chance to put in another "one Dunc would have been proud of". That’s team work that is. And the big Fella is going on to great things.
