As Time Goes By

I was just reflecting on all the Football Manager type posts suggesting Yobo's garbage, Cahill is past it... let alone the amount of abuse some other players have suffered on here. It made me think back to earlier this year when we were all boasting we had the best 'English back four" in the country and clean sheets were the norm for us. It is amazing how nothing stands still for very long these days. So what changed?

Well, for a start, Jags got a serious injury and I do believe we're missing his leadership and determination more than we should. Secondly we had Tony Hibbert playing out of his skin until the injury, since when, he's been a shadow of the peaks he reached. Pushing Osman out to wide right also caused some problems because a defensive midfield player he definitely is not.

Now Lescott has gone, although I do believe he was a better left-back than centre-half... particularly without Jags alongside him. Bainsey has also fallen away from the high standards he was setting at the time which demanded an England call-up.

I was delighted we got Heitinga but a little concerned about his recent form. I think Distin is a "safe" option but will not contribute the goals nor the pace that Lescott did. However, he should be the steadying influence at the back.

Joey Yobo will, in my opinion, settle down a bit more with Heitinga and Distin alongside him. Bainsey has to get over the departure of his "buddy" Lescott and get back to concentrating on his own game. So hopefully we will establish the best "non-English" back four in the Prem this season and time will move on again.

Sylvain Distin is very quick.

I thought Yobo looked a lot better against Wigan, he does need an experienced head alongside him.

A lot of the team have played below their normal standards, hopefully that will change in the next few weeks. The new signings will help, they’ll freshen things up a bit.

Distin’s just as quick, if not quicker than Lescott. He is also just as good a defender too. It is Lescott’s goals that Distin will struggle to match because he did score some vital goals for us. If Distin could contribute a few goals from set pieces, which he is more than capable of, then he would prove to be just as good, if not better than Lescott (at centre-half).

No contest for me; Distin is without doubt a better CB then Lescott. His performance for England said it all for me. As soon as he came on, England looked dodgy at the back; twice he was beaten at the same post as he was in the FA Cup Final, one they narrowly missed and one they scored from.

Capello obviously doesn’t rate him as he opted for Upson instead. Distin is a proven international player, a leader, some say quicker, and has actually won silverware. JL was even a second choice target for City — don’t forget as they tried for Terry first.

I personally believe Lescott’s goals were more about his positioning at set peices, none of any quality and more than likely a result of Moyes telling him where to stand. I think the 3 players brought in from his sale will bring more goals than we could have ever hoped for from Lescott.

Personally I think EFC is much better for having sold him and I believe as soon as City plump for a big name manager, Lescott will be found out and end up being a bench warmer for City. If he was really that good, why were City the only bidders? £22 million is very very good business IMHO.

Disappointed to see the comments about Tiny Tim, leave the legend alone and show him the respect he shows us! Baines is quality and he will come good again, no doubt.
I do wonder if it is a Moyes tactic to not work them too hard pre-season due to the small squad size, hence the slow starts... although who knows!! COYB!

Tony Cheek.

I take it back.

He looks like Shergar.

I never thought he was that quick.

Just watched the link... got any of Lescott doing anything like that?

Thought not.

Bloody Hell. Never mind Lescott doing that; do we have any of the players doing something like that?

It takes time to adjust to a partnership, it’s not just about who plays alongside you but also who plays alongside them.

Everton's defence was settled and picked itself, and a bloody good defense it was. Give it time; Distin for me is as good as Lescott, albeit we will miss his goals but not his hoofballs. Yobo will benefit from playing alongside Distin, who, when interviewed, came across as very composed and intelligent.

Hibbert now has competition and truth be told played well against Wigan.

Fully agree Jay.

Surely, all the boys need (Baines, Distin, Yobo, Heitinga) are consistent games with each other, so they learn each other’s game. So far this season (and pre-season) the back four has been chopped and changed. When it’s settled, we’re bound to see a huge improvement.

Whilst I didn’t like Lescott to go, we as a club should breathe a massive sigh of relief that City were willing to pay what was in effect an absolutely stupid price for him. Distin as a defender is a more than adequate replacement at a fraction of the price. We just have to replace his goals that’s all.

In the end, for me, it’s good riddance to Lescott; the King is dead, long live the Kings.. and get well soon Jags who is twice the defender and club man the Lescott will ever be...

Once Wolves' money taken out of the equation, it looks like we made a net profit of about £15m on Lescott out / Distin in. You’ve got to say that’s great business.

The benefit City get is Lescott has only just turned 27 whilst Distin is 31.

I reckon Distin’ll do us proud over the next 2-3 seasons though and act as an experienced, steadying force around Jags, Baines and Heitinga (and Rodwell to an extent) to gain more experience alonside him.

All in all — a great buy.

I put the Radio5 commentary on with the ITV pictures on Saturday — well, the appalling Alan Green couldn’t possibly have been anti-Everton could he? Perhaps not, but oddly he seems to have become a Lescott fan. At the start he seemed to think it strange that Upson had been preferred, and again questioned the early second-half substitutions regarding the arrival of Lescott as more important.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t recall such enthusiasm when the player wore the royal blue. Perhaps Green is impressed by price tags.

Keith, Green is an absolute cock who is so biased towards Liverpool that he has become a caricature of himself.

If I can help it, I will never listen to the slimey, untalented, jealous blert.

Tony - you are correct in every detail (OK, perhaps not all the spelling) and I usually take the trouble to ring or e.mail Radio5 to complain about him whenever I can.

I wasn’t taking too much notice as I was streaming the Russia – Liechtenstein match to try to get a look at the new boy, but amidst Green’s self-opinionated drivel, there were these comments about Lescott. It's a pity he wasn’t doing the last quarter when his new discovery, in combination with the mega-million RS full-back, fucked the whole thing up.

You have to laugh, when Lescott was here, he was being hailed by all as one of the best defenders in the Prem.

He moves to city, and all of a sudden he was never actually that good, and Distin is just as good. Well, lads, while Distin is decent, he is nowhere near as good as Lescott.

Brian, it’s not a question of who’s the better player in absolute terms or how well we deservedly rated him as an Everton player but who got the better value and for me it was Everton by a country mile. Distin is a very good centre back at club level and I believe that this is also Lescott’s natural limit. John Terry or Ferdinand he isn’t even Jagielka he isn’t for me.

I also see why he wanted to move on (greed) but not after committing himself to a long-term contract at the club on enough to make him rich beyond the dream of any normal person when his alternative would have been the dole.

Breach of contract and tapping up players are illegal. Why should any fan of this club have a good word for Lescott? He is in footballing terms the ultimate piece of shit. To have taken 24 mil though off the new Arab club in Manchester and at the same time done Wolves a favour is win win for everybody but City. Exquisite.
