A lack of ambition?
Comments (42)
Having just watched a sickening defeat to Fulham, I feel the need to comment on what I percieve as a lack of ambition from our manager when trying to win games. I feel that today's game highlighted problems that have become indicative of the way we as a team approach matches.
I think that today Moyes could have done more as a manager to win this game. Firstly he should have made sure the players had their eye on the ball, rather then the sloppy manner in which they approached the second period. Now I recognise the players were also at fault for this but it is Moyes's job as manager to ensure that complacency does not set in at half-time.
Another problem that was evident in this game (and greatly frustrates me in most of our games) was Moyes's refusal to leave anyone up from free-kicks and corners. This in effect means that our defenders have no option when defending but to hoof the ball aimlessly back to the opposition; thus instantly putting ourselves back under pressure. Wouldn't it make more sense to leave a quick player like Pienaar (who offers little defensively) up the field as an 'out-ball'? I was particularly frustrated in added time when, despite being a goal down, no-one was left up to counter-attack.
My main concern with Moyes has always been his seeming inability (or refusal) to make changes that everyone else would see as obvious. Granted over the last two seasons his use of substitutions has improved but his replacement of Phil Neville with Heitinga today was quite frankly ridiculous. I believe that Moyes wasted a perfectly good chance to show ambition and go for the win by bringing on a more attack-minded player e.g. Fellaini, Bilyaletdinov, etc. Instead he chose to bring on a defender and play him in midfield. Evidently Moyes was looking to secure a draw before going for a win but his plan backfired and we ended up having Heitinga playing out of position as we slumped to a loss.
If Everton are serious about challenging for Europe this season, Moyes has to be more adventurous and we have to seize opportunities like the one we had today.

We have the most talented personnel at the club since ’87 but we are miles away from the greatness of that side if we don’t become more positive and confident in own ability very soon.
If you want negativity by the bucket load, look no further than the one and only David Moyes.
What makes me sad is that we do actually have some players who like the ball played to their feet but, due to the style of play we have, they are all too deep or restricted in their movements by Moyes to make a contribution in the opposition area.
I take it Moyes has never heard of the following football philosophies: "Best form of defence is attack"... "if the opposition don't have the ball they wont be able to hurt you."
Why did Moyes pick Jo again and why take so long to take him off? He is an embarrassment. He never touched the ball for the 1st 20 mins of the 2nd half.
Moyes's tactics cost us 3 points today.Get rid and bring in Bilic.
We went 2-1 down when we had no forwards on the pitch.
How can we as supporters be paying £35 upwards to watch a bunch of miserable halfwits (manager included)? Even I can control a simple pass, even I can cross the ball onto the head of a 6 ft 7 inch moptop. Even I can tackle without having to bundle over the one dimensional striker. Even I can shoot from 10 yards and get it remotely near the corner of the goal!
Moyes hasn’t a clue. I have often thought he has been one of the lucky managers, benefitting from not having much competition in the league. Well, now the rest of the league have caught up and Everton are left found wanting.
Fuck off Osman, Fuck off Hibbert, Fuck off Jo, Fuck off Baines, Fuck off Neville. And do one Moyes... Hiddink for manager!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah. Why oh why did he not play Bily???!!!
Yakubu is quality but coming back from a serious injury.
Saha is decent when fully fit but always suffering from injuries.
Jo is a poor player. There’s a reason Man City don’t want him. He’s rubbish.
Vaughan is a waste of space injury-prone player. Never gonna be anygood.
Anichebe is pretty poor. Could be useful but never gonna be great.
It's becoming a chore to go the game to watch this rubbish.
Between 8th and 10th this season at best and thats being very kind to them, it’s only the fact that I believe there are actually teams than us that am being so generous in that prediction.
The reason I ask is this. We all know that Moyes will not drop Hibbert, Osman, or Neville, regardless of form or opponent. He will always go with one striker, and even if he has strikers fit apparently wants to just play Cahill up there. So if you were the Everton board and had to listen to Moyes talk to you about needing more players, how would you not just laugh out loud?
If Moyes came to you saying he needs a new right back, you would have to think "why, you’ll just continue with Hibbert out there?". And Moyes’s calls for a holding midfielder. Why, he’s just going to continue with Neville in that spot. Moyes bought Fellaini for that role and has him now playing up front as a second striker. Moyes says he needs more midfield options. Why? He will just continue with Neville as previously stated, and Osman out wide, and Cahill if he’s not playing as a striker.
Today we had a wide midfielder on the bench in Bilya, but Moyes continued with Osman out wide, where he is not good enough. Moyes had a Dutch international RB, but he continued with Hibbert at RB and as a result every single move down the right came to a screaming halt once the ball was played out to Hibbert.
Neville gets injured, Moyes brings the Dutch international RB on but to play in midfield, and then to only watch the hoofball carry the ball over his head. Moyes has two fit strikers on the bench, so he takes Jo off and puts Fellaini on, a Belgian international who plays deep central midfield for his country. So a RB for a holding midfielder who himself is a defender by trade, and a central midfielder for a striker.
Then he finally brings on a striker but for a right midfielder Osman, who himself is not a winger but is a central midfielder. All the while our wide midfielder Bilya stays on the bench, we play a portion of the game with no strikers, and most of our outfield players being played out of position. So I ask again, if you were the Everton Board watching Moyes’s team selection and style of football for the past years, would you give him a bunch of money to spend? I don’t think I would.
How can those players play so badly after half-time when they were in complete control at the break? Only answer is the way they are coached... yes, I am afraid I mean Mr Moyes. Responsibility for that abject surrender rests squarely at the feet of him alone.
Those quality of players should be better than that (with the exception of Jo and Osman who were absolutely fucking awful). If we continue to play like that then, make no mistake my friends, we will be in a relegation scrap.
What must Heitinga, Bily, Distin, Jo etc be thinking tonight? Champions League qualification? You are having a laugh. All the decent players will desert at the end of the season and who can honestly blame them?
Once again, we have made an abysmal start due to no money (not even compared to Stoke!) and this is clearly due to a hidden agenda on behalf of Billy Bullshit or the fact that the club is run like a circus. I am fucking totally sick of my club taking the piss out of supporters by saying one thing and doing another.
We are close to not renewing our season tickets and spending the money on something more reliable. This is all due to Kenwright totally mis-managing everything to do with the club, not to mention his deceiving of everyone.
Moyes must take a long hard look at himself and consider whether his relationship with Billy Bullshit is beneficial to us all as it seems that there are major problems on and off the field and the financial restrictions, for whatever reason, are coming home to roost.
Neville should be at RB, Fellaini in the position he plays for Belgium (deep CM), and Pienaar as well should play in his international position behind the striker(s), where he is much more effective. Especially so in the absence of Arteta.
I watched him playing there for SA against Ireland last week and he was superb, threading killer balls through to their frontmen and displaying some lovely touches (flicks and backheels, etc). His talent is wasted out wide as was Arteta’s.
Oh, and Osman is a back-up player for that position. He is not, and never will, be a wide player. That would at least get Bilya into the team as our main wide attacking threat.
Come on Moyesy, you’re too loyal to some players, playing them out of position just to get them into the team. It’s time to shake things up before it’s too late.
I see Villa played their three-quarters new defence from the start today and won; MO’N was prepared to take a risk, we need to do the same or we’re all DOOMED!
Think back to a time when you may have had a sore right leg or ankle. You cope okay for a while don’t you?? Then, if the right leg fails to improve after a while what happens? Yes! The time spent compensating for the dodgy right leg/ankle result in injuries elsewhere, hence the loss of form.
In the case of this dodgy right leg, it does not need a period of rehab’ — it is a chronic injury. No good persisting with it as it will eventually deteriorate further leading to all kinds of silly walking patterns. A straight forward amputation is required. Doesn’t matter if the new right leg is not familiar with the left one or is an inch longer or shorter, just put it in and let's get mobile!!!
Personally I’m getting sick of us starting every season the same way. I have to turn away from the TV set when I see Moyes saying before the season begins that our first goal is to avoid relegation! The way his team played in the second half suggest they will struggle to do even that.
I know we don’t have much money, I know its no-one’s fault that Jagielka, Yakubu and particularly Arteta are injured and I know we can’t help that other teams like Spurs and Man City can out spend us and pick off our best players and our targets like Naughton. But we’ve started the season in a downbeat depressed manner off the pitch and carried it on the field with us as well.
Would be bad enough if it was a one off, but we did exactly the same last year as well (anybody else remember with horror the "we’re not ready to win Premier League games" quote). The really worrying thing is that we’re actually three points worse off this year than last. I still think we have a very good squad of players, certainly good enough to win more than we lose in this league, but to turn it around we need a manager who can both dish out a bollocking and lift the team’s confidence at the same time. Moyes almost sounds like he’s given up at times. I appreciate he probably feels he deserves more money to spend given all he’s acheived, and I would agree, but if he’s lost enthusiasm for the job he should be man enough to walk away.
DM is doing nothing for Osman's career playing him wide, I’d like to see him in CMid for a few games to see if he could hack it. The only bright spot was Fellaini, who came on with some nice link play.
A Class Central midfielder alongside Arteta Billy & Pienaar out wide with two up front — who knows what we could achieve? Sadly it'll never happen; it's dour 4-5-1 all the way for us. School of Science is long gone.
Moyes had the players at his disposal today, he chose to put out that disgraceful team. He had a Dutch international RB, but he chose never close to international Hibbert still. He had a wide man in Russian International Bilya, he chose not a wide midfielder and never close to international Osman. This is not about the players boys, this is about the tactics and the positioning chosen by Moyes. Every other football team is capable of passing it around in the midfield except for us. This is embarrassing.
I just can’t understand why, when I watch every other team play, they constantly have players showing for the ball, no matter where they are on the pitch. But when we get the ball, it takes around 5 seconds for another player to show up.
That’s the first thing in football, passing and moving, it’s the first drill you start working on as a team. How can we be a month into the season and not be able to do this? Honestly, it blows my mind and I cannot understand it.
Jo is taking stick. He’s actually quite a good player when he receives the ball on the deck but he seems to spend 75-80 minutes of every game fighting to win headers with no real support or options around him. Perhaps my biggest disappointment of all was the fact that we’ve just paid a hell of a lot of money for a very talented Russian international who just may have made a difference today but didn’t get a look in even though he’s probably the fittest member of the squad. On today’s evidence I fear we may be about to have another of those Yoyo seasons.
Firstly, we’re only 4 games into the season so far so it's surely a bit early to start ringing the alarm bells. Secondly, Moyes is one of the highest rated managers in the league by most good judges — I’m sure he has more tactical acumen than most of us on these pages put together, although we may not always agree with his decisions, and think that he’s a bit defensive minded sometimes.
With regard to not starting with the new signings, a major factor would surely have been that they’ve only had 2 days to train with the first team squad having been away on international duty during the week. It also takes a while for new players to adapt to the pace/power of English football. When Heitinga came on, he looked a fair bit off the pace from what I could see. Whilst Moyes could have brought Fellaini on when Neville went off, the Yak didn’t really look up to speed and ready for a lot of game time and likewise Vaughan has been out injured recently.
On the plus side, thought that Distin had a good game at the heart of the defence and was our best player on the day, with Pienaar.
Where I really lose it with Moyes is in this idea of playing TWO defensive midfielders — first Carsley / Neville, now Rodwell / Neville. It simply doesn’t work. Completely unbalances the team, leaves a creativity vacuum in the middle of the park, forces the likes of Pienaar and Osman inside to try to start something up, and guarantees hoofball — today up to the hapless and completely inappropriate Jô.
Fellaini must be worth a go in a proper CM position alongside Rodwell or whoever. With Cahill a bit forward, and Yakubu as the main striker. Today was dreadful. Sort it out Davey before it’s too late.
Fulham, a team who have lost their last two homes games, only scored one goal... so what do we do??? Play two holding midfielders, keep three internationals on the bench (£42m of talent including the Yak), and have the same useless combination on the right. Also, Why oh why do we keep playing Neville as a holding midfielder? He practically rugby tackled the guy to give away a free kick for the goal.
I never thought I’d hear myself saying this but Moyes has gotta go; fair play to the guy — he made the team much more consistent but he’s gone as far as he can. I remember watching us beat Sunderland 7-1 two years ago, the football was fantastic but we have never ever reached that level on a regular basis. The only reason for our 5th place finishes is the rest of the chasing teams haven’t been good enough or they had their own problems.
We have the best squad of players I can remember for years, we now need an experienced coach at the top level to take us forward. I don’t know who but I know one thing... that man isn’t David Moyes.
Time for some facts.
Players like Neville, Osman, Hibbert, Baines & Pienaar have taken Everton to consecutive Top 5 finishes and an FA Cup final.
To repeat. CONSECUTIVE TOP 5 FINSIHES AND AN FA CUP FINAL.
So why should Moyes drop them after a dodgy start to this season?
Show these players some loyalty and they will come through for us again.
Anyway, I understand the Moyes bashing but he is the right man for the job.
I really hope that all of who state that Moyes won't drop Hibbert etc come on here and admit you were wrong. I can 100% guarantee that both Osman and Hibbert will be dropped this season. Hibbert will 100% not be our first choice right back this season. People used to say the same about Fellaini.
I thought we had a good first half and Fulham’s first goal was just a lucky deflection. As ever, everyone’s blaming Osman, Hibbert and Neville who were amongst our most effective players today so whilst the result is disappointing this reaction is again SO over the top.
I say it every year-keep the faith-Davey and the boys WILL deliver!
Osman is having a poor time but did actually manage to get himself into two excellent goalscoring opportunities but didn’t create anything of note for others. The Pienaar/Baines partnership has been sussed out by other teams and I don't think either has hit the heights of last season — so, all-in-all, a complete lack of any creativity or on-the-deck football. I felt Rodwell looked out of sorts today, not quite on the pace... neither commanding nor creative.
Jo again looks for the ball but his first touch for a Brazilian is poor and he’s being fed on hoofball scraps – he will never ever show his talent as our lone striker.
I thought Cahill played well today, and I also think Heitinga and Fellaini made a difference when they came on – in fact they actually passed it to each other on the deck on numerous occasions.
Whilst we wait for Arteta (probably December before he’s effective), we somehow have to find that spark of creativity. We need a midfield four who can compete and create and to me Moyes has to bite the bullet and drop Osman, Rodwell, and Neville and try out Heitinga and Bilya out with preferably Pienaar and Fellaini – hopefully in the Hull League Cup game. Up front, he needs two from Cahill/Saha/Yakubu/Jo
We were creative without Arteta at the end of last season with Fellaini, Cahill, Neville working well together and Pienaar/Baines causing havoc down the left, we have to find that spark again but to me get Bily on the left and Pienaar on the right, Heitinga as defensive midfielder and Fellaini as the link.
Bad triming to post that.
I do actually think we’re in danger of over-reacting but what do you do when you’ve got 3 points from 4 games and the team plays like a poor man’s Tranmere? The whole club stank today from the manager down to every player.
The players played as if they wanted the game to finish after 30 minutes and the manager made some awful decisions on the starting line-up, the tactics and the substitutions.
I am on record for consistent criticism of Billy Bullshit but today Moyes and the players need plenty of flack. As with the cup final, we take an early lead and then just go to walking pace. It is not good enough.
I would however like to add that in Jo’s defence he had no support whatsoever and the only times he got a decent pass (on the ground) we looked dangerous. No forward can play on his own against the likes of Hangeland etc — and that was our main tactical error. We could have been 3 up at half time with a decent attacking formation... instead of which, we stood back half-paced and let them gain in confidence.
Through thick and through thin, one of the things I’ve always been proud of as an Everton supporter is the wit and knowledge of the fans and, certainly in comparison with other Johny-cum-lately supporters of clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea, the behaviour towards our own players.
I was at Craven Cottage yesterday and as ever after an Everton defeat left feeling down. What made it worse on this occasion was the experience of sitting amongst certain elements of our own support. I took my 12-year-old daughter along and was appalled by the extent of the abuse and foul language being vented upon our own team by so called Everton supporters.
It was a very disappointing performance from us in the second half and it's clear that a number of players are out of form and lacking in confidence but this cannot justify the level of ignorant and profane abuse hurled at the players by our moron contingent. Osman was the first player since the great Alan Ball to score a winner for us at the Cottage and that was only about 12 weeks ago - the way he was treated yesterday by some of our own he might as well have been wearing a Liverpool shirt.
None of these abusive idiots so full of hatred have any more passion for Everton FC than I do — there is no excuse. You are an embarassment to a fine football club.
I play football every week and if I continued to give the ball away, I’d be dropped. At Everton, play in that way and you’re the first name on the teamsheet. I strained my neck watching all the hoofball yesterday.
How many times will our captain (who we are lucky to have because he’s a great family man) give freekicks away around our area? How many times will Hibbert get a starting role despite being one of the worst players to ever put on a blue shirt? When will Osman get dropped?
I used to really look forward to Everton games. It was the highlight of the week and what I lived for. Not now though. It’s just something to do. For a Sunday afternoon pasttime, it’s up there with cleaning the car only far less rewarding and far more infuriating.
Completely fed up with them and the game in general. Adebayor, Lescott, Redknapp etc. etc. Just mercenaries. It’s not even entertaining anymore.
We’ll maybe (if we’re lucky) have a few good performances and people will start convincing themselves that the likes of Fellaini and Jo are great players. They aren’t. End of story. It’s just a further indication of how standards have fallen at our (once) great club!
Ask yourselves this. What are we playing for?
1) To finish 5th and build on that and attract players? Nah. We’ve been there and blown it. Not once but three times under Moyes.
2) To see some entertaining football? No chance!
I’ll tell you what a great season will be this time. Finishing mid-table and trying to beat Liverpool maybe once.
Our motto should be changed from "Nothing but the best is good enough" into "Not good enough".
I was frustrated with our performance and I think that there were several players who didn’t play well — but that happens. Even "Everton Legends" such as Ball, Harvey, Kendall and Co had their off days. I remember seeing Howard Kendall play the most awful pass — without really looking where he playing the ball — in a match at Goodison in Sept 1971 v Derby Co. He gave the ball away and they scored. But as I said, these things happen.
Osman may be playing poorly, but he has done well in the past. I personally believe that Hibbert and Osman still have an important part to play at Everton. We have made some good signings - but isn’t the idea to build up a good squad of players and have some strength in depth. Getting rid of some of players like Osman and Hibbert would leave us still needing to bring in more players. And have we forgotten some of the European performances of people like Anichebe and Osman? Yes Hibbert is far from the best right back there is - but neither is he as bad as some of you make out.
For me, the issue is that of the Manager — and this is not the writing of one of the Moyes Out Brigade. Moyes has done well for us and we have established ourselves back in the top 6. But can we maintain this? Can we go a step further and challenge for the top 4? It would be nice to think that we could make a go for it. But I can’t see that we will as long as Moyes remains so rooted to playing a lone striker.
Yes it has worked in the past — but if you keep playing the same tactics then surely other managers will soon be able to work out tactics to counter you? You don’t have to be a genius to work that out!! Moyes must show some variations in his tactics. If we can predict his tactics — then so can other managers. He has a good squad of players; the question is: can he get the best out of this group of players? I have my doubts. We were not beaten yesterday by the better team — we were beaten by the better manager. Hodgson better than Moyes!!? — surely not I hear some of you say.
I doubt whether Moyes will get to coach/manage a team in Serie A. And of the two managers yesterday — ask yourself this question: Which one of them got the best out of their team, used their players to the best effect? Moyes picks the Everton team, decides on the tactics, substitutions etc and the signings. He’s okay about taking the plaudits when things are going well — how about being brave enough to admit when he’s got it wrong?
If somebody is shit or not performing then let them know...
Nil Satis nisi optimum... it’s a pity a lot of Evertonians don’t know its meaning.
If somebody is shit or not performing then let them know.
There are other ways to do that other than barracking and being abusive. And as regards your comment — it’s getting behind the team that’s put us in this mess!!! I fail to see how supporting the team and getting behind them has contributed to Everton losing matches??? Perhaps you could enlighten us?
You don’t get to finish as high as Everton have finished in the last couple of years, have good a Uefa Cup run, reach the Carling Cup Semi-Final and the FA Cup Final by having "shit" players (your words — not mine)
The Manager decides on the tactics, formations etc. He also decides on the substitutions. And also which players to sign. Moyes has taken a lot of praise — quite rightly — for what he’s acheived at Everton. But that does not mean that he is beyond criticism. It seems to me that he seems to think he is "untouchable". Well that’s not the case — and he should be brave enough to admit that he got it badly wrong yesterday.
And regarding the new signings, I wouldn’t have expected all 3 to start... but isn’t Heitinga cup-tied for the Europa League? Would it not have therefore been a good time to play him with Hibbert to play on Thursday ?
Aston Villa had 3 out of 4 players in their Back 4 making their debut yesterday. The expression "Fortune favours the Brave" springs to mind here. Moyes is far too cautious — he needs to be more imaginative in his tactics. You don’t find may successful teams with over cautious managers/coaches.
There aren’t other ways to let players know... you can rant and rave in forums on websites that they’ll never read if you want, but I and many others prefer not to blow smoke up the boys in the blue jerseys arses, should they not be justifying their obscene wages...
The very fact you jack off about how we NEARLY won this and that, again confirms to me that you and your kind still have no knowledge of the meaning "Nil satis nisi optimum".
I do however agree with you that Moyes is largely at fault, but to suggest that "Hibbert and Osman still have an important part to play at Everton" again leads me believe that you are deluded...
Hope I’ve enlightened you.
Osman wasn't in the game at all. OK he's playing on the right when most see him as a central midfielder, but for the love of god, if you are a premier league footballer, you should be able to retain possession and have the ability to find a team mate, just once in a while. Anyone else notice how many times he puts his hands in the air as if he's be hard done by, when he's once again been pushed off the ball.
Then to Hibbert. How many times did he have the ball on the right in a good position and launch a dreadful long ball hopelessly no-where. And can someone please tell me, how a professional footballer on something like 20K a week, cannot cross a fucking ball. There was one time yesterday when he had 4 players to aim at in the box and he missed the fucking pitch.
Forget about Fellaini and Cahill not being able to play together, these two should never play together again.
Nice lads, but enough is enough. Just not good enough.

It was nice whilst it lasted (6th, 5th, 5th finishes)... There won’t be no challenge for Europe this year, mark my words!
