The League Cup

Comments (30)

Does anyone have any idea about winnings from each round of the League Cup through to the final? Is it worth the effort for Premier League clubs, or is that why most of them seem to prefer to allow themselves to be knocked out quickly rather than try and win it?

Better to concentrate on Premier League survival than try to win a trophy — has it now had its day??

Should we now return to the early sixties when the old first division clubs either didn't enter, or were barred from partaking in the competition? (Not sure what the case was).

Could things be spiced up by perhaps seeding the top clubs against the bottom ones, or merging the competition with the FA Cup, and then the winner is guaranteed a place in the Champions League? At least they have won something... just interested in any thoughts, ideas, etc??

This is the problem with modern day football. When a trophey loses its prestige, people think the format needs changing, when its football itself. Its sold off the prestige for money. The European Cup, CWC and UEFA cases in point.

If the FA cup wasn’t weak enough by comparison to its glorious past, having the winner go through to the CL robs it completely of its point, the trophey itself. But that’s maybe all its worth now anyway. Doubt you could get the top 4, the premier league to agree to that also.

And combining the FA with the LC? Wouldnt that just make it the FA Cup?

I like the idea about the league cups amoung the home nations combining together though... haven’t heared about that in a while.

John, it’s peanuts (in fact nowhere near enough to buy peanuts). I remember last season reading a great article in a free sports magazine called Sport which detailed prize money in all competitions. I seem to remember the FA cup winners only get £1m. All other prize money is very insignificant when compared to the Champions league.

Back to your first question, not sure round by round but I found this on the Carling website - Do you have details of the prize money involved for winning the Carling Cup?

The prize money is awarded by the Football League - The winners of the Carling Cup win £100,000 and the runners-up £50,000. The losing semi-finalists each take home £25,000.

We received FA for gettin through to the latter stages of the UEFA cup season before last.

League cup finals are ’a good day out for the fans’ but not worth it financially for the clubs.

The prize money may not be bog but don’t forget the rest - the TV money for a start. TV money for appearing in the final muyst be much more than the prize money.

Anyway. Not about the money for me. It’s the trophy. May be number 4 on the list, but it is better than anything we have won in the last decade.

As per other threads, I think the Carling Cup is now a good opportunity for us to give young or extra players a run. Ideal for the Gosling, Baxters etc We have a fair amount of competition for some places (esp right full back now) - so it could be a chance to play Neill, Heitinga in MF, give Bily another run etc.

I imagine the prize money is non-existent, but we all want our moment in the sun don’t we! I don’t think we should be too dissapointed if we had a short run in the competition but we should give it our all. City and Spurs probably fancy their chances, no Europe and all, but we do have a squad which has the potential to fight on a few fronts I suppose

I agree with the original post in the respect that there could be some scope for changing things around but as long as it carries the possibility of Europe with it, it will always have a place.

I find it sad that money has become so important to the fans. When I was watching Everton v Villa in the League Cup Final a few years back, I don't believe money was ever mentioned. The match and replays were fabulous occasions despite the end result. I’m still in it for the glory and hope we play our strongest side against Hull. Besides, I’m a strong believer in keeping the momentum of our last two games going.

Agree 100% with David Johnson.

Surely the point of entering any competition is to win it. The Honours list in the front of the programme doesn’t list record turnover or transfer fees and it never should. Money may be important, but it’s not why we follow football surely? Otherwise, best head off to Manchester or West London......

Agreed David. It annoys me every May we hear the same lazy stat with the Championship play-offs... worth £20m to the winner. Yeah, well what about a place in the Premier League? £20m... big deal; three James Beaties.

I totally agree with you Rich, The winners of the Europa League should indeed get a place in the Champions League, It would make it worthwhile for all the qualified teams to play their utmost to win it then reach the Holy Grail that is the Champions League, even if it is a qualifiying round. How you would get around the 4 teams from one country rule would have to be addressed though.

Talking of prize money, I seem to believe Everton made in excess of £7M in prize money, gate receipts, TV etc from our run in last year's FA Cup. What the League Cup will be worth to the winning team is another matter!

It gives us competitive practice, which, if we want to improve our squad’s capabilities (collectively and individually) on the road to a CL place (and beyond ...) we could use in bucket loads. If used appropriately it will pay in the long term. Witness the kids of Arsenal.

A domestic cup could never take a CL place, as other leagues would want similar. And the cartel of the former G-18 would never wear that...

Prize money may be minimal, but there is the revenue from games, and as others have pointed out, the prestige of getting to Wembley.

The League Cup is the one domestic competition we’ve never one, in all of its guises. For that reason alone I’d like to see us lift it.

Enough of the Sky 4 teams have been in the finals over the last decade to suggest that this "loss of interest" is perhaps something of a misnomer.

The Carling Cup is there to be won; we reached the final back in the seventies v Aston Villa... I can still see those games in my dreams, and the defeat at Old Trafford still haunts me.

It would be nice to get our name on it, at long last. And give the fans another great day at Wembley.

As I can well recall the League Cup Final of 1977 (all 3 of them !!) — and other matches in that Cup run: 3-0 at home to Coventry was a special performance, as was the 3-0 win at Old Trafford. And the start of the glory years of the mid 1980s was that run to the League Cup Final in 1984.

Nostalgia, the romance of the Cup... well, I would take that any time over the current Champions League bullshit we have all been sold. Champions League? Well it ain't what it says on the tin for a start. Not everything in the past was better than today’s era — but one thing that was is that the only way to get into the Champions League/European Cup was by winning the League.

The current format is how basically the rich clubs have got richer. Yes, even in 2004-05, I would rather it had been the Uefa Cup we had qualified for by finishing 4th.

The devaluing of domestic cups such as the League Cup and the FA Cup by the Champions League is one of the things that’s wrong with the game. Am I the only person who is bored stiff of the Champions League group matches? It’s a choice of Moan Utd, Chelski, Gooners, Oslopool... and has been for the last few seasons.

It’s been one of the main ways the rich clubs in Europe have got richer each season. Do you really think that if one of the so-called elite clubs in Europe failed to qualify for the Champions League, they would miss out? UEFA would find some way of bending the rules.

The Americans have a saying:- "If it ain't broke, don’t fix it". The European Cup was a brilliant competition as it was — this Champions League stuff has ruined it and devalued too much domestic football in this country and others.

I want us to win the League Cup; quite simply, if I was offered 5th place or the League Cup, I'd take the League Cup.

Unless you win the Premier League, surely the next best thing is winning a trophy. I just want to see us win something! 14 years without a trophy is just way too long!

The League Cup is certainly a very good opportunity for youth players to be given a run out. And we cannot blame David Moyes if he decides to field a weakened team in order to conserve his 1st team regulars for the Europa League or Premier League — after all, they are slightly more prestigious.

What trophies do you win for profit? Are your hopes all about how much money you get?

I want trophies, I couldn’t give a toss about how much you earn from it. I want to win stuff.

Or last trophy was 15 seasons ago.

I have taken some thought over what team I would like to see Moyes put out tonight, and have come to a descision. I know alot of people have said that our involvment in the Carling Cup should be limited as we have more important things to worry about. But I believe with our team coming in to form we need to use these mid week games to build our confidence and experience of our current first team. Therefore I would pick:

Howard
Baines Yobo Distin Heitinga
Billy Rodwell Fellaini Pienaar
Cahill
Saha

Subs: Nash Gosling Neill Osman Wallace Jo Yakubu

However, I do not think we should hold back with our substitutions, especially with Gosling, Wallace and the Yak, as I think they need game time also. I have also chosen Neill over Hibbert as he offers more versatility at the back.

I myself am looking for a big performance and win tonight, to show we are right back in form, and give us the perfect springboard for the game against Porstmouth at the weekend.

I was wondering if the young lad Baxter will get a run today. Playing Hull in the League Cup for me, would be a perfect chance to give him a run. I saw him play two seasons back and he really impressed me. But I haven't seen him play recently.

With Bily still under a injury cloud, let's stick him on the left and see what he could do. Would love to see a young Everton side out there and being competitive. As an Evertonian seeing a side with Wallace, Gosling, Rodwell and Baxter in it would make me excited about the future.

Carling Cup is probably our easiest way of getting into Europe. I think the more experience of semi-finals and finals, the better. Also, ideal for players like Yakubu, Bily and Neill to get up to speed. Hence the competition is well worthwhile for us.

Let’s not forget that we still haven’t won the League Cup.

Moyes will want to win this match. He will probably make several changes but we will have a reasonably strong team out. If this match is not deemed that important to us, it will be even less important for Hull, for whom all that matters is staying in the PL. I would expect us to win.

I’d love to see us win it, but having said that it certainly needs some imagination to give it a renewed sense of prestige and purpose. For one, I like the idea of it being a testing ground for SPL teams entering the Premier League, which is an idea that seems to be floated every so often without an awful lot being done about it.

Does anyone know if tonight’s match is going to be able to view online anywhere? The usual sources don’t appear to indicate as much, and I had real problems even getting radio commentary on the Carling Cup last year- not that I’d have wanted it in the end!

It’s definately winnable , more so than any other prize we are in for this season.
But as per the comparison about the fat lass, would we hinder our chances of something better by our involvement ?
We have to make 4th place our mission this season , the Champions league revenue and the prestige for our current and potential players outweighs all other competions.
My team tonight
Nash
Neill Yobo Distin Baines
Gosling Rodwell Heitinga Bily
Osman
Yak
I’d like to see Ossie tried in that role which has been Timmys and Maros recently, game time for others in front of mainly our normal defence, and if Lucas is fit he is better than Hibbo .
If we lose, no mither it could be a blessing later on in the season.

Well, so much for not having much squad rotation.
Hibbert, Heitinga, Distin and Baines in defense.
Gosling, Rodwell, Osman, Bilyaletdinov in midfield
And Yakubu and Jo up front.
This should be interesting, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get off to a slow start while the team learns how to work with eachother.
I think Moyes has made a big statement by resting Pienaar, Fellaini, Cahill, Yobo, and Saha all rested.

So with the draw live on sky just before KO tomorrow, who do we want to get drawn against?

Any of the 3 teams outside the Premier League, but I have a feeling we're gonna get Man City.
